The question is in the title. Have you ever had a cavity? I came back from the dentist today after getting a cleaning (been over a year since my last cleaning) and he said I have 4 cavities. ... One medium size, one small/medium, and two small.

Like most of you I consider myself to have good oral hygiene. Brush twice a day, floss a few times a week. But I have never had a cavity before. It's kinda bums me out since I'm going into the dental field and everything 🙁 But yea has anyone ever had a cavity or any other dental related issue? Perio?

I didn't brush until like 7th grade...
I deeply regret it but now I religiously brush and floss and my teeth have been fine ever since, although not aesthetically pleasing.

My dentist knew my goals, so when he told me I had a cavity, he and the dental assistant approached it like they were telling me I was going to die in 2 weeks. I was just like.... uhhh alright

Oh god, I had horrible teeth growing up. I remember having a couple of silver caps as a kid, fillings, and teeth literally growing on top of other teeth along the upper gums! Due to the severe crowding, I had to get four teeth surgically removed, and once that healed, I had braces for 5-6 years after that. Now they look great, sure, but my parents always joke that my mouth costs $7,000-10,000. I now religiously floss every night. I only drink water and rarely ever eat candy. Bottom line: being pretty ain't cheap.

Who cares? I have 18 cavities, brush once a day and floss a few times a week. No cleaning is ever been done, and those cavities were never filled. I even scare of needle and dental visit. Put that aside, I'm actually an ortho assistant.

This is like... someone who is terrified of clowns wants to go to clown school to become a clown. I don't understand.

How can you be so dismissive of your many cavities and simultaneously want to be a dentist?

You are afraid of needles? You do know that students practice on each other in dental school, right?

I had my molar 4 surface composite filling done today. I'm thinking about replacing all the amalgams that I have on pretty much all of my molars with composites for aesthetic reasons as well.

All the time as a kid even though I never had much of a sweet tooth and brushed twice a day, probably had to do with brush technique. Hadn't had any cavities for a while now. Ive been brushing better, flossing almost every night, gotta keep that breath fresh haha. Though I think my diet also plays a huge role in my dental health, I usually eat less than 10 grams of carbs a day and its mostly from veggies.

I don't think ketoacidosis is worth having no cavities dude, be careful. Don't stay on that diet more than a few weeks at a time. About 50g of carbs per day is reasonable, I don't want you to die.

Im not diabetic and dont have any liver or kidney problems so I wouldnt get ketoacidosis.

Those cavities were never filled because they don't exist ( I work for a really big dental office, most doctors who I assist told me that there is nothing wrong with my teeth ). I still don't like needle but it is not like needle-phobia, and I do know that students practice on each others 😀. My main point is that you don't have to be teeth enthusiasm to be a dentist. I just love to work on patient and interact with them. That is also the reason why I like to work as ortho assistant more than general assistant 😉.

Having a cavity or two is no big deal. The only thing you are required to have for d-school is clean teeth (aka low plaque scores). That way your patients can take you seriously when you tell them they need to floss more.

I turn 40 tomorrow, and I've never had a cavity. I've got some nasty coffee stains right now though 🙁.

I did have a an extra tooth in my gums back behind a wisdom tooth. The Doctor gave me the option to take it out and I went for it mostly for the experience. I thought that if I was going to do this for a living it might be nice to know what it was like.

Not unfair imo. You're the legacy of your parents. They will leave behind with you what they have, including the ability to seal all your teeth 😛

I need lots of work done.. I am an assistant but I can't afford any of the treatments that I assist on a daily basis.
It's kinda sad, but at least if I get accepted to dental school, I'll be a good practice material for my classmates.

Rep bro, I'm an ortho assistant too. I am pretty sure I'd prefer being a generalist over an orthodontist, but ortho assisting is the most rewarding type of assisting for sure.

I had a large number of cavities as a child. My teeth got filled almost each visit. Good brushing later on brought my oral hygiene under control. Only one of my permanent teeth have a very small facial composite now.

Two root canals and two crowns. My dental hygiene when I was younger wasn't so hot - much better now though 🙂

Still rockin my wisdom teeth too. Never came in but apparently don't need to be extracted. Good enough for me.

I once went to a new dentist (freshly out of school) who found A TON of cavities worth $2000 to fix. Then I went to an older doc who said I had no cavities.
Similar thing happened when I went to a chain clinic (some new doc found 2 cavities) and once again went back to the older doc who still saw no cavities.
Yeah, that debt can make one look for cavities where there are none.

*The reason why I keep going to new places is to get free cleaning from my insurance that my older doc does not take.
