23 yo, 2017 college graduate, 2.9 GPA bio major.
Volunteered for AmeriCorp for 6 months after graduation, decided I wanted to be a doctor/continue education.
Accepted to a masters of bio program (pre-professional focus) at a small university...set to attend January 2019 - January 2020. Trying to increase GPA, show ability to handle graduate level work.
Living at home, volunteering for local EMS (small, >250 calls a year), waiting to be licensed by the state so I can get a job as an EMT. Beginning to shadow local physicians (just plastics so far).
75 or so hours of undergrad research in a microbiology lab.
Have taken MCAT --> 506 w/3 months independent studying, will take again.
Where do I go from here? How do I navigate the space between graduating college and applying to med school? What is the best use of my time?
Things are going slowly but moving in the right direction. My application date is still more than a year away, but I know it's going to fly by. With my low GPA I know that my chances are very slim. I didn't know that I wanted to be a doctor until after I'd graduated. I decided to go for the masters instead of a DIY post bacc because if nothing else I'll have the degree and also to be in a learning community with similarly focused people. I know I have the drive and intelligence but unfortunately I've put myself in a bad place by underperforming during my undergraduate career ( a combination of depression/not knowing what I wanted to do/general lack of focus & underappreciation of the value of good grades)
Input from physicians, @Goro highly appriciated
