How are my chances...LOW DAT SCORE HELP!!!

Hey everyone, I took the DAT exam today and scored lower than i thought I would..... anyways I made a 17/16/21/21/18/19 (PAT/QR/RC/Bio/Gchem/Ochem) I thought I would do a lot better on the Ochem section but I ran out of time... anyways so in summary: 19 AA 19TS 17PAT, 3.44 sGPA, 3.63 oGPA, 120 volunteer hours, 110 shadow hours, 3 letters of recommendation and a HPAC committee letter. Again I know I scored low please don't ask about my DAT as that is not what I'm asking for. I just want to know what chances I have based off what you guys have seen in the past.

Degree: Biology major, Chemistry minor
Date DAT taken: August, 3
Applications completed already (just waiting on DAT), I applied to USC, Western, Nova, and all 3 texas school.

You're chances are minimal. Relatively low GPA, relatively low DAT, you'll miss the 17 DAT cutoff for some schools so you'll automatically be rejected. Your ec seem average and you didn't apply super early. You have a small chance but not a good one. You should get your sgpa above 3.5 and retake DAT.

I think you have a chance at the expensive private schools. Apply broadly.

Honestly that is not great advice.
I think he has a great shot at his state school and any other school he wants to apply too.
A 19AA is the average score and I know people who have gotten 18s and were interviewed and accepted to multiple schools.
Knock out the interviews and good luck!

Your profile is pretty much on the nose average, except for the 16 that you scored. But you also scored it on the section that they care least about.

If you at least tripled your application list, I bet you'd get a couple interviews.

I definitely wouldn't consider you out of the running. Just look at individual schools stats.
If their lowest DAT score admitted is a few points higher than yours I'd look at other schools but I'm on the lower end for UCONN & I still applied. You never know.. neither do the people on sdn

These statements can't be made with certainty. QR is arguably the least important section, your AA is close to the average for acceptance, and unless you rock out on the retake, it wouldn't help you to take it so late in the cycle given you've already applied. Nothing said here will help your chances at this point, so just focus on getting an interview, and if it doesn't work out, consider retaking the DAT. Good luck

Thanks, yeah I pretty much posted on here in hopes to see if anyone with any knowledge out there that has seen people get in with my scores. Unfortunately SDN drags in a load of unprecedented garbage advise along with what I'm looking for too lol. I know my scores don't really measure up to what I can do, I think I panicked during the exam. But yeah I do realize I'm a little on the lower end of acceptance so it can be a hit or miss. I learned a lot from my DAT studying so a retake wouldn't be so bad and I just turned 20, so I still have some time ahead of me if I don't get in. Anyways a good idea would probably to stay off here and just hope for the best.

I think you have a shot. Apply more broadly to lower tier schools. Some schools you have are very unlikely. If you don't get in, a dat retake with 20aa+ will.

I have a 19 AA, 3.60 cGPA, 3.57 sGPA and have been invited to interview at UCSF (OOS resident as well..). I agree, the 16 will put you out of the running at a lot of schools, but it may not at others. Apply broadly and realize that numbers aren't everything..

I mean, it really doesn't matter, does it? Never read too deep into the situation. ADCOMs choose applicants for very specific/diverse reasons. One aspect of my app didn't get me the interview but a culmination of my academic and personal experiences. I think they're more interested in your journey rather than your credentials.

I don't. If your numbers aren't right do they even care what type of human being you are? A 19AA can mean some of thei favorable sections are above 20+ and they can get over the 19 AA, but if it's a 19 with some 17s and 18s in their favorable sections theyll reject.

They rejected me. I would certainly agree that dental schools care more about the journey than the statistics. Plus, each school has their own (seemingly mysterious) desires in an applicant.

Everyone I call when I get rejected they say DAT. I ask but my personal statement, my supplemental, my hours? My EC!??? They all say nope just retake your DAT. Like jeez if it's my journey I wish they would tell me

Those schools may in fact highly value the DAT as part of their selection process. I do agree most schools look at applicants overall, but in some cases your academic ability is evaluated separately from the rest of your application (i.e. good EC's and personal statement won't make up for poor grades/DAT, they want you to meet some threshold first). A lot of the above discussion is also about UCSF, whose selection process seems to be one of the more mysterious.
