How can we get universal healthcare in the United States?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Only ppl that need it. We read a passage in school senior year. Said something about providing what you can and only taking what you need to survive, pretty noble way to think about it
Nothing noble about theft. It makes you a crappy person

Another point Mrs. Deola made is that we are Democrats because we live in a DEMOcracy. Makes sense. And humans are social creatures so socialism is pretty natural for us

I mean it makes sense though.

Go ask Cuba how it has worked out. Or North Korea.

I mean thinking about it, why ppl got nice ass stuff when other ppl can’t even EAT.

Because they worked for it. Just because you work hard for something and have more than me doesn't mean I have a right to your stuff. That's the great thing about America. Anyone can become something if they work for it.

Because some people have provided enough value to others to earn the ability to then trade their money for the nice stuff

Some people haven’t.

But those are dictatorships. Not really socialist, they just call it that. I heard ppl in North Korea have no freedom at all, crazy to try to imagine

Man this **** is deeep.

It is...and this stuff and more like it is why it’s hard to say, “this should happen”, and boom! It happens. Way more to it than all that. If it makes you feel better, both the left and the right gets thwarted by the system all the time, and ends up frustrated at the changes they can’t simply put into place at the snap of a finger.

Which, @TJinDaHouse , is exactly how the system is supposed to work. The general construct of our government is pretty ingenious honestly.

Man they didn’t go into all these details. We just learned about like republicans and democrats. Like republican used to be the good party, bet y’all didn’t know Lincoln was a republican! But it switched. The Democrats today are the republicans before and the republicans today are the old Democrats.

We also went over how to be a good American, and how to VOTE, and that everybody should vote! And when they don’t thats how 45 got into office. It was a good class, but I mean it was just high school. They just touch on the surface

You seem to really like your teacher, and that’s good, I don’t want to insult her. But this sounds like a propaganda class. You should have been learning how the government and economy are structured.

We did. I’m only a bill, and I’m sitting on capital hill. I get the main idea of it

We also went over the important issues my generation faces like a woman’s right to choose, common sense reform, and stuff like that. But mostly the importance of voting

But all of your posts in this thread show that you really don't know the main ideas. I am being sincere here when I say this, you should go read up on it. It will help you develop better arguments than "we should help people." It will also help you understand more about our country and how it works, and why things happen the way that they do. It will also show you how we don't necessarily want to "be like the other countries" in many aspects.

It’s great that they stressed the importance of voting, and that everyone who is eligible should vote.

But along with what AnatomyGrey said, you should read more and inform yourself so you know you’re voting for the candidate that supports the change YOU want to see, not what your teachers, friends, or family tell you. And just know that there’s more than one way to accomplish most of that change.

Oh Ill always vote democrat. But if we got a minority republican I still might consider them. Y’all said before they have a black doctor running. Bet

I’m so proud of America for electing Obama. I know we can do it again!

Personally, I don’t care how you vote, that’s your right as a citizen. But please take time to look at the issues, the track records of the candidates, and where they really stand, instead of just voting party lines.

There’s not a black doctor running...he ran last time, for the GOP nomination and pulled out. He now works in a government position. There are other black conservatives that may run in the future, but honestly...the color of a candidate’s skin is the least interesting thing about any of them.

It’s more like we’re all there eating and 51 % of the room decides me and a couple others need to pay everyone’s bill. Then they say they’ll lock in a clost if I don’t pay and if I resist going in the closet they kill me. Then half of them add deserts to the tab

Come on sb247 !! If I am right, only families with earning of 24k and singles with 12k less are excempted from paying tax. No matter where they live, do you think that they some pile of cash sitting on their table and you want to go after them? Please have some heart. People with that kind of salary do a lot of hard labor, we fortunate are indebted to them.

But you don’t want a uniform premium because a lot of folks would immediately declare they cannot afford it, and a uniform premium that everyone could afford (which doesn’t exist) would never cover the cost

Your response made me remember one of the conversations I had in 2016 during the primary season. During the office luncheon, our conversation was turning to democratic primary. A colleague of mine said that Bernie’s Medicare for all will not work and we have to vote against him. I asked him why. He said it is too expensive. I asked him if he had any insurance. Is it free? He said No. how much you are paying? Around $300 per pay check. How about deductible? 4 or five thousand. What is your salary? Around 129k. I said you are paying around $8000 in premium in addition to employer portion. On top of it you are paying 4 or 5 thousands as deductible. Now Bernie is offering you full coverage without deductibles or copays for $2400 a year, why do you say it is more expensive? He was shell shocked and speechless. I asked him, will you support Bernie now? He said No. I asked why ? He goes “people who earn less than me, will get to pay less than $2400. I can’t support “. That pretty much explains everything. He voted for Hillary !!!

There was a typo, his salary was around $120k . I forgot to mention this . At the end of conversation, I told him good luck and please continue to pay $8000 in premium and $5000 in deductible and be prepared to pay more and more every year

Frankly, that’s the mentality of more than half of our population. I don’t care how the private healthcare rape me, I don’t want Government to come and rescue me because that means some less fortunate might also get rescued. I will stay totally blind if I can make sure less fortunate lose one eye

I'm not going after anyone, I'm just not interested in them coming after me. We should all go earn whatever we earn, spend or give whatever of that on whatever we want and leave each other alone.

No. I'm not indebted to someone just because they don't have much.

I see a very good quality in you . You are being brutally honest. Not hiding behind false compassion

You can’t simply say his math was wrong. He must have vetted the numbers by some experts. In addition to 2% of the salary from the employees, he was planning to a charge a portion of the premiums on the employers

"common sense reform"?
Yeah, like sensible gun reform and all. We did a project on gun violence, and for extra credit held a mini march at school recess against the gun ppl. We also had some speakers that lost friends and family at the theater shooting in Lafayette awhile back, and they was trying to get some ppl from sandy hook down here. They was starting a club to reach out to the victims of fun violence.

Our generation is probably the most involved one ever. We making change to make America better

My personal voluntary charity in no way means that those I help or don’t help have a right to seize my money should I have decided to not help

Compassion is giving your own earned money/time. There is no compassion in your plan to steal from susan because gary needs something

It’s not “common sense” to restrict the firearm defense rights of nonviolent Americans

Yeah, it not for restricting normal citizens, just cleaning up the streets and getting guns that only belong on a battlefield off our streets. That something both sides can agree on. Even reagan who was a republican agreed with it. We not coming after old ladies self defense handguns

There is a thread in the sociopolitical forum called “ban guns now” that you should go read and then post in there to avoid taking over this thread with gun talk....you will learn a lot that mrs. delio didn’t teach you

You’re wrong on just about everything you just wrote

No Mrs Deola told us both sides, like with the gun issues, a lot of Americans think we gonna get invaded or something so they want war guns, which I can get they scared, but thats why we got a military. Some rednecks with guns aint gonna do nothin that a fighter plane and tanks can do.

ok i will. I just found a poster I made for civics. Basically we was focusing on how to make change happen.

Step 1 Make urgency. collect information and raise awareness of a issue
Step 2 Make a coalition of ppl that agree and are dedicated to change, form a committee
Step 3 Develop a draft of the vision of your plan and how to implement it
Step 4 Communicate your vision and lead by example
Step 5 Empower action, remove barriers, keep communication lines open
Step 6 make short term wins, set achievable benchmarks
Step 7 consolidate gains, and widen network of supporters
Step 8 Monitor you progress and keep stateholders informed

Right. That's why Iraq and Afghanistan went so well for us.

And that’s great as an activism seminar, it’s just not an academic government/civics class. It’s a useful thing and if you are good at it organizations and candidates will pay you good money to do that though

You plainly missed my sarcasm.

It took us years to pacify Iraq even as much as we did. What makes you think America would be any different if someone invaded us?
