How is it fair....

I have always heard it is better to take upper level classes than re-take basic science classes. The MCAT will prove how competent you are. The application system for medical school AMCAS, will not take into account that you have re-taken classes, only the DO system does that.

But DO doesn't care about the schools I take them at either right?
Ah so much to consider, thank you.

Also, I was being difficult on purpose. 😉

Your welcome. Most med schools will accept community college credits but not all of them. It should say on MSAR, the upper tiers tend to be stingy about it.

In this thread, @PurpleLove has a 3.2 then a 3.1 then a 3.3 then a 3.6cGPA but nearly a 4.0 in her non pre-reqs which means her BCPM is terribad.
In this thread, @PurpleLove doesn't know what a DO is but then googles it and claims to know more than everyone here, including the DOs, about the DO path to medicine while sticking her nose up at the possibility of not being a real doctor. Later, @PurpleLove admits to strongly considering going DO.

This has been such a rollercoaster for me.

HUH, because clearly you are not understanding what I was trying to say.
Didn't know much about DO and didn't want to consider it. Still don't want to, but may consider it. Though they have high average GPAs too, so I'm out of luck.

I have between a 3.2 and a 3.3. I don't ever remember saying I have a 3.1. Could you please quote it? If I did, it was a mistake.

@Lucca I searched for me saying 3.1, couldn't find it.

Also, I have a total GPA of 3.6, a non-science GPA of almost 4.0, and a science GPA of 3.2. How does this not make sense?
Does cumulative mean not including science? Pretty sure it doesn't, correct me if I'm wrong.

Cumulative means including everything. That's what cumulative means.

I thought UChicago had higher English standards? They are a LA School, after all.

I apologize for misquoting you on the 3.1

OKAY, SO I WAS RIGHT? AND YOU/BOONLEAN are finding non-existing errors in what I'm saying?
I said almost 4.0 in non-science classes.
I said 3.6 cumulative.
I said 3.2-3.2 science.
Stop looking at what other people said I SAID.

PurpleLove is an epic troll

Oh I'm justttttttt so spoiled. No, I've worked hard for everything I have.

Well, if you're having problems with gen chem... good luck with the upper level courses
Had no problems, bro. Got an A-, then B+, then B+.
Upper level courses might be harder, but no more limiting the amounts of As they give.

If you are from UChicago it wouldnt be a bad idea to start networking, find out who is on the board of admissions, do research with them, email for advice, shadowing, etc. If they get the gist that you are a highly motivated and determined individual it might be enough. You also need to start considering people for LORs.

UChicago was my first choice, I'm far from competitive though

Will do so!
How do people find physicians to shadow?
I have one doctor so far, but I heard it's good to have a wide range?

Well you probably need to get those As in the first place
Nope, not from what everyone says here. I have to go with them, sorry.
I don't know any Chemistry majors who got all As in Chemistry.

If your having a couple orgo hiccups its no biggy, good luck with pchem! I think its safe to assume that the course load for a chem major will buy you some leniancy with your GPA. Between pchem and analytical your taking some of the hardest classes there are. Plus being a non-bio major tends to make you more of an attractive applicant.

I might double major in Biology. After the pre-reqs, it's not that many more classes. Not sure yet, though. 😀

There should be a faculty listing on the website, see if the dean of admissions does research or has any clinical obligations; thats your big fish to impress. Emails work good and all but showing up in person to their office carries more weight for a stronger first impression, if you can't catch them in their office email for an appointment.

Pick physicians to shadow based on your interests clinically (specific body systems, imaging, etc.)

Dude, a chem major is just as popular as a bio major. And no one cares about majors in the first place (or their perceived uniqueness).

Doesn't matter. If you need to bump the GPA, you need to do well

It might be hard to double major given the new section of the MCAT, I think you got some psychology and sociology plus some biochem if haven't already taken it. I gotta say though being a bio major does help for the MCAT. The biology section is just a ton of general information, but its nice if you encounter something you've seen before. Majoring in it will increase the chances of you encountering something you've seen before.

The difficulty of those classes make it substantially more reasonable to get Bs compared to As

Still lowers the GPA. OP has the confidence she'll annihilate pchem, achem and ichem without a problem, so there's no stopping her. Ochem and gen chem were a distraction

I prefer Chem. I'd rather take something I enjoy...

LOL, if people with B-'s get As in upper level classes, I'll be fine. Thanks for the concern.
Some people just don't do well in orgo, I'm lucky that i faired pretty well; took 9+hours a week of studying not including tests. If you aced gen chem and have a good work ethic the upper levels are still within your reach-If you can handle calc and physics.

If I can't handle it, I'll drop it and major in Bio. But I like Chem, so I'll work hard and hopefully see results.

While I understand your position, your predicament would be more compelling if you've already taken your mcat, otherwise this whole conversation might be moot.

If the upper chems prove to be a problem, OP can always jump ship and take the chem minor, finish the pre-reqs, and finish as a bio major/Interdisciplinary. I feel like the prevalence of Interdisciplinary majors are going to jump from the new MCAT.

you wont be back because you'll be embarrassed to say you didnt get in anywhere and had to do those
SMPS you thought you were too good for
and before then, had to do a postbac in which you thought were only for stupid people to get easy As

and then you'll finally reapply with your hopefully better attitude and make a new username on sdn because you were too ashamed to be associated with your present personality

Never said I won't do a SMP/post-bacc. Said I thought they were just paying money to get As to get into medical school.
I did say I didn't want to waste a year doing them, so I'd prefer to take science classes at local colleges, now.
Why would I be embarrassed? A lot of what I said was joking/to get people mad on purpose. Some people need to pull the stick out of their asses.

you have the biggest one dearie. lodged really far

I guess people get offended when you suggest you're learning more than them.
Doubtful. Just because people are insulted when you act like an @$$ towards a group of people does not mean that they all belong to that group...some people are able to empathize with other people. So, even if you were correct about people at 'lesser' schools all learning less than you, that still does not mean that your opponents belong to that group.

But many clearly do. I do agree with you, though I don't know why anyone who is hurt by the system would try to justify it.
