I have been fortunate to have 4 As at this point. I am also on 4 WL, but I am soon going to remove myself as those are non of my top choices. I have deposits down for ICOM and NYIT-AR (the timing of the deadlines made me do so). I am from Chicago and want to go EM, Anesthesia, or Surgery.
The clear choice seems to be NYIT: as they have P/F, a tried and true curriculum, great board pass rates, and ultimately a name that is known (Jonesboro even has many residents and fellows at great programs in Chicago, my hometown).
The reason I am still weighing ICOM is that their match list has been incredible every year since they have been graduating and I'm curious to see how this year looks. My main concern and a concern that many current students have alerted me to is the increasing class size. A current student told me with the smaller class of M2s and the expanded class of M1s has made the campus so packed with no study areas, reorganized class schedules to fit labs, and a next year will have two classes of 226 each. I worry that the school has some growing pains in the coming years that might give me a different experience than the previous classes. I can't imagine that core site lottery will get easier with nearly double the amount of students with nearly the same core sites. I also worry about the for-profit status and how that plays with getting external opportunities. I have heard ICOM is very reluctant to sign off on getting shadowing or helping to get you in early clinical experiences, as litigation/liability is a worry when you are trying to sell.
Again, the clear choice is NYIT-AR, but I can't help to lose a little sleep off the incredible match list and area to live at ICOM. Looking for additional insight and confirmation that my head is in the right place with choosing NYIT!
