Hey everyone, I graduated in May 2013. Since then, I've gotten licensed and I've applied to well over 100 jobs, I've kinda lost count. If I don't find something before the next class graduates, am I kinda screwed? Who would want to hire a pharmacist that's one year out of school with no xp?

Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? I've applied Everywhere within a one hour radius of me, and I'm thinking of applying out of state. I haven't yet because who would hire someone who needs a month or so to get paperwork/MPJE done?

Do you guys think volunteering would help? How would I even go about doing that?

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated... Thanks!

Update: I'm on my 3rd interview with Target! Woohoo! And I had a question for you all... I received a drug test packet thing that I'm supposed to take someplace if/when I get an offer... but I haven't gotten an offer yet. Does getting the packet mean that I will probably get an offer though?!

I'm applying everywhere for any type of job, including per diem. I either apply to them directly or indicate on my application that I'm interested.... nothing back 🙁

You probably don't have a job because you didn't relocate. Sucks to do sometimes, but it's better than not having a job. Keep applying for positions and start working on getting licensed in states that you would be okay with living in (and that aren't totally saturated with pharmacists).

It's easier to get another job once you already have one. Or so they say.

How the hell did it take you nearly 1 year to START looking out of state? I think you should have more of a go getta attitude towards job hunting. I started out of state hunting after a month of not finding anything. luckily a New York job fell on my doorstep 2 months in so i didn't have to relocate

North Carolina? there are jobs - what part of the state? Move down east, or to the mountains. The triangle, Charlotte, and the triad are competitive. have you gotten interviews at the jobs you have applied? Where did you go to school? (I know a lot of UNC students - jobs were tight but they all got jobs eventually - even the "less than ideal" candidates that didn't match in the residency.

You're moderately screwed but not entirely so.

The being one year behind gives a disadvantage due to not having updated/current connections. Other than that, youre all in the same boat.

Keep applying, change your marketing strategy/ attack angle, and land something in the next 3 months. New grads will not be ready to work for at least 6-7 months yet. Lots of openings need pharmacist sooner.

Revisit your retail app strategy
Revisit your cover letter marketing to non retail jobs
Tweak your resume
Consider applying cold (no posted position) .. that is usually good for a few paychecks worth of per diem when youre desperate.

If you dont have any leads after a month following these changes, consider out of state, but have mpje in the works before going out on interviews. Youll still be ahead of the other guys.

Volunteer if you have an option to do so at a target employer. If not, spend that time working on your cv and applying more, again.

In terms of being screwed with regards to not finding a job: it depends.

I found a job after about 8 months of searching. I'm not in retail or hospital. I attacked every possible job board, tailoring my CV to whatever I was applying for. Finally, a recruiter came through.

Try not to focus on 1-2 sectors of pharmacy (retail & hospital). I say this b/c most graduates are in those sectors. Start getting creative with your job search. Sometimes just changing the format of your CV can make a difference. I changed my CV where my skills are highlighted above my education (most new grads do the opposite). I have had many jobs prior entering to pharmacy school, so I was able to list many things in my "skills" section. I suggest you google "executive resume templates" and look through Google Images. Choose a format that looks right to you. When I did this, I started to get more interviews (but b/c I was a recent grad and didn't have like 5-12 years experience, I was never made an offer). Between May 2013 till now, I think I have sent out over 140 resumes (just an approximation it was probally more or less - I have actually lost count).

My advice:

Retail sector - start searching who are the pharmacy recruiters. Email them (keep it short and brief). Warning: It was my experience that the retail recruiters lie constantly and are very rude. Anyways....moving on......

Hospital - it's like playing a slot machine, sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. Your best bet: have a good connect or sign up for an agency.

All other sectors - 50/50. It just a matter of luck of finding the right recruiter.

I wish you luck and don't give up.

Thanks! I already tailor my cover letter to each place that I'm applying to, but I don't tailor my resume. I've had them both looked at by my awesome references, but I will try to tailor the resume 🙂 I also apply cold to any place that allows it (some places don't have an option to do that).

Thanks for the info! I have applied to literally everything. I don't care if its retail, hospital, LTC, etc. I have a few #'s to district managers in my area, but I haven't gotten any calls back 🙁 (And I keep it short and professional) I also have a few recruiters -- nothing from them yet either *sigh*

I have one friend with an offer in Winston-Salem and one with an offer just outside of Charlotte at big chain pharmacies. Obviously, the saturated areas are going to be Raleigh/Charlotte areas since those are the bigger cities in NC. I would agree with some of the posters above that mentioned the Greensboro/Winston-Salem area if you haven't already tried, maybe down by Fayetteville or out west near Asheville. There's a lot of possibilities in NC, you've just got to consider all of your options! Unfortunately, we've already had our career fairs at school so a lot of places did their recruiting then, but I'm sure there are still openings available somewhere. Don't forget aside from Walgreens/CVS/Walmart/Target theres also Kmart, Riteaid, independents, compounding centers, etc, doesn't hurt to call (district managers etc) to inquire about some of the smaller places/chains! Good luck!

Good luck with Asheville - one of the most desirable places to live - that and Wilmington (mountains vs beach) - those places are saturated considering they are not big cities. I know somebody with 15 years hospital experience who couldn't get an interview in Wilmington.

Oh and don't let not being licensed in the other state hold you back, I was hired by Walmart in a different state without having the license yet, and they still took me.

I got a call from a recruiter in Winston-Salem, he said he'd call me back about a time to interview in another district, but he hasn't yet. I think I'm just going to have to turn to the more rural areas here. I put in a couple of applications already, so we'll see! I see, I guess I didn't really consider that they might think there was something wrong with me. But good point. As far as feeling ripped off, I already feel ripped off that it's This difficult to find a job! But I will take anything -- it's better than sitting around or just volunteering for months.

I said some things like, "I care about the patients and want to listen to their concerns" which I suppose made me sound like I will waste precious time on patients rather than metrics -- that plus a few remarks from the interviewer (district manager) made me feel like I really won't get the job. That and the fact that he told me he was interviewing 40+ other people for the same position,and they were more qualified.

Nope, nothing. To clarify further, I moved to a completely different state, and I don't have any contacts here. So if you stay in your home state or go to places with contacts, then maybe it'll be a different story.

I was just at a meeting where they said that they are always looking for people in Fresno. Look for districts in central California or rural Northern California. Plus labor law is fantastic here. Pharmacists are hourly which means that they have to pay you overtime if you work for a company that expects you to work crazy, long days and you have to take lunch breaks.

Hey anon89, you're not alone. I graduated last May and have been looking for a job in the Dallas-Fort Worth area since August. Recently, I've decided that I'm willing to relocate to pretty much anywhere in Texas (except for the border towns such as El Paso and Laredo). We have to find something eventually...right?

Oh man, it's good to know that I'm not alone! (Though I also feel bad at the same time!) If you're willing to relocate, you should find something soon right? I keep hearing so many times that Texas needs pharmacists, I guess we're about to find out if any of that is true! =\ Good luck! 🙂

Update: I'm on my 3rd interview with Target! Woohoo! And I had a question for you all... I received a drug test packet thing that I'm supposed to take someplace if/when I get an offer... but I haven't gotten an offer yet. Does getting the packet mean that I will probably get an offer though?!

Maybe. I have no idea what I'm up against and it would be nice if people were honest with me. It's frustrating as hell. DFW is home. Something eventually has to turn up somewhere...right?

No, they send that to everybody who is scheduled to interview. If you get the job, they will usually let you know within a day after the interview with the district manager (aka 'district executive team leader' or whatever BS target calls it), and then you will have 24 hours for the urine drug test, hence getting the packet in the mail.

I think it's just the order for it, not the actual test 😛 I'm supposed to go somewhere to actually take it (with that packet) when/if I get an offer.

In most cases, yes. There should be a firewall between your phi and your employer. Normally this is the job of the MRO.. Only exception being some hospitals where lab does the test and some employee MD reads them.. very shady and questionably legal.
