Congratulations equus, Genghis, stick, bunnyslippers, elephante and DocDVMD!!!!

Have all of you decided whether u r going to IL for sure?

Thanks! I have no clue right now. I also got into Tufts, and there's so much I love about both schools that it's going to be a really tough decision. Although, (becuase I often think with my stomach) Illinois gets major points for having Diet Cherry Coke at the interview and a Chipotle nearby.

So where is everyone planning to live? It's tough since so many of us have pets. I've got 5 cats (though I will probably leave 2 w/ my husband) and a cage of finches.

My plan at the moment is to buy a house near campus and hopefully rent out a bedroom to another vet student. If anyone is preliminarily interested, PM me. We'll be meeting with a realtor toward the end of the month.

SO GLAD THE WAIT IS OVER!!!

I got in! 😱 I can't believe it! *happy dance!* Found out via status page... I don't get mail for another 4 hours. This is going to be a crazy 1-2 weeks as I am waiting to hear from Minnesota, Western and Michigan still!

Anyone from Champaign or visited longer than I did (I was in town less than 12 hours) have any impressions they want to share? I regret not driving around more... I like to get a feel of the area and what it has to offer. Specifically, hiking/outdoors areas? Housing?

😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

I'm still waiting on decisions from Davis and Purdue before I make a decision, but OMG yay Illinois!

That's my idea too! I have no idea how I am going to accomplish that though. Just wondering (feel free to decline answering) but how are you going about buying a house while getting loans for school? Is your husband helping you with personal expenses or are you paying for the mortgage with your loan? Thanks!

Not sure yet either. Still waiting to hear from one more school, and I'm on a few alternate lists, so I'll have to see! What about you?

GenghisCohen
LOL... Chipotle? That made up my mind, right now!! Jking. I know what u mean though!!! I want to go ahead and decide and not sit on my acceptances so that other people can take my seats. I am going to try and mail out my acceptance by the end of my spring break.

DocDVMD
I definitely have no idea. I am so lost. I never thought I would even get one acceptance, much less a few. I am so indesicive... And I have too many factors to consider, including my husband's job!

Elefante
Good luck to SO on getting into grad school! I hope u guys can be together.

Good luck to Genghis, DocDVMD and elefante in ur decisions. Let me know what u decide... I am also looking into Tufts. It will be nice to know what everyone 's thoughts are! 🙂

Hey incendium -- CONGRATULATIONS! on your acceptance... I am not from the area but did spend some time out & about around the campus on interview day. There seem to be a lot of really big open-space parks, one of them is literally across the road from the vet school and my husband and I saw several people walking their dogs, on and off-leash in that park. I think it was part of campus, it had these little plaques with information about the different trees in the park, as well as a Japanese house and garden that is apparently open for tours in the warmer months (heh).

Also, we went off behind campus a little ways and found a big park run by the Urbana Parks district, it had a playground & bbq area, as well as a bunch of walking trails, both paved and "soft" and a sculpture garden! This park was really cool, we walked around for about 40 minutes, and saw a whole family of mule deer, rabbits, and what I think were blue jays? That's a lot of animals in less than an hour, and it was at about 1pm too! It did seem like the city-run parks are less dog-friendly ie: no off-leash anywhere and dogs only on the paved paths, but with all the wildlife I understand.

Anyway, I thought the open spaces & parks in the area were probably it's best feature (although downtown looks like it has some v. nice restaraunts and bars and I hear it's like a mini-Chicago in the summer w/outdoor cafes etc...)

now, off to try to check my status page from my work computer! Hope that info helps!

omg! 😀 admission offered (status page)! i'm so excited to get the mail today!

Admissions offered! OMG!
This is such good news to hear before I depart for another interview!

Congratulations Starlene and Winddolphin!!! 😀😀😀

Does anybody know if the new curriculum actually went into effect? That would definitely be a huge consideration in deciding for most of the people on here, I would think. Just think-clinics first year!

Yeah, we have been saving for awhile, and he's going to be keeping his job in Chicago.

The place with the plaques is the UIUC Idea Garden and the park on Windsor road is Meadowbrook Park. There is a dog park in northern Urbana. There will also be a dog park in southwest Champaign, some time (not sure when, but they have the land). Urbana is city of parks, really. If you went farther west on Florida/ Kirby in Champaign, you would have seen Hessel Park, which also has a play area for kids and group picnic areas.

There's a Taste of CU in West Side Park, during June 19th-21st, with local vendors and artists in attendance.

I agree... has anyone heard this? It would definitely be a big factor in my decision!

Yay, I'm so happy for all of you: DocDVMD, winddolphin, starlene, and incendium! :zip::highfive:

Worth the wait, huh? 😉

Also, one of my friends got on the waitlist, and she is doing a file review with Mary Kelm on Thursday. She told me that she would ask her in person if the new curriculum will be brought into effect. *nods* I'll let you know if I hear anything sooner though. Might as well just go to the school myself and ask. XD

Anyone know how much a parking permit is and if it includes the main campus/how much it would be to get both (I'm kind of in love with how gorgeous the rest of the school is and would want to hang out there too)?

Student rates

9 Month Permit
( 8/18/08 - 5/15/09 ) $420
12 Month Permit
( 8/18/08 - 8/17/09 ) $480
Shuttle Lot* $110
Motorcycle Permit* $ 68

Parking permits are only for the lot that you ask for, so you would need to buy another permit, if you want to park in a fee lot during the day. There are also by the hour lots on campus.
If you are talking about after 5pm, the meters are free. There are also lots on campus where you can park over the weekend for free.

Hello class of 2013, welcome to Illinois and congratulations on your acceptances! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the school or the area.

Just so you know, the outdoors scene around here really stinks. There are a bunch of small forest preserves around which are nice, but nothing expansive. About three and a half hours south there's a huge national forest which is really great though, just a matter of getting there. There are great recreation facilities though. The west gym just reopened this year after a 4 year renovation and it's really nice, has a climbing wall and everything.

According to the article the curriculum still needs to be approved by the Board of Trustees. I think I remember Dr. Foreman saying that this was pretty much a "yes" already, but I could be mistaken. So does this mean it's definitely going into effect for C/O 2013?

Another question... the postcard doesn't mention anything about a deposit for your seat. Does this mean we don't need to pay up at all for a deposit? (That would be awesome, haha).

Shawnee? That is a great place for all of you who have never been there.

Yep, Shawnee, very cool place, I suggest going in the spring when the snakes are coming out of hibernation. I think the new curriculum is for sure, I've just been hearing bits and pieces, I'll try to track down Foreman sometime and get the news from The Man. As far the deposit goes, I cannot remember for the life of me when I had to start sending money to Illinois. I want to say nothing is due until sometime in early summer, then they'll start vacuuming your pockets out.

I seem to remember that nothing is due initially but sometime this summer we'll have a microscope fee to pay up.

Wow, there are soooo many UIllinois undergrads on the C/O 2013 facebook group! Everyone seems to know each other...

I haven't joined the FB group yet, but I'm a non-traditional student that will be joining the class of 2013 at Illinois. Just joined SDN too. Happy to have gotten in too!

Yay another New Yorker! Congrats.

im an undergrad at UIUC so guys join the FB group, im so excited to meet you all! and if anyone OOS is coming in for the open house let me know, ill give you the grand tour 🙂

Becca

When's the open house? Do you think it's worth it to fly out there for it? I'm not 100% sure I'm definitely going to UIUC yet.

its april 4 i believe, its a tough call whether or not to come...i know its expensive to get out here. you'll get a more in depth tour and get to talk to students and see some of the other stuff U of I has (wildlife clinic etc)

Hello class of 2013, welcome to Illinois and congratulations on your acceptances! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the school or the area.

Hey guys -

Another first year here willing to give a little insight. I used to be "BartonVet87" on here but I can't remember my password. haha Feel free to email me any questions ([email protected]). We'll get the big sib thing set up a little later (right now we are up to our eyebrows in LA anatomy!).

Congrats and ENJOY your summer!!! 🙂

Hm. The open house sounds like a good idea, especially if there isn't an accepted students day or anything like that. Maybe I'll see some of you guys there!

You guys HAVE to come...so we can all meet up. XD

I'll be there!! But how will we recognize each other? I won't be hard to miss... the only brown person there! 🙄

We should all meet somewhere! Though someone more familiar with the school should probably suggest where & what time....

Since we all interviewed there, would it be best to meet in the same place we met for the tours at a specified time? Since earlier is better than later, we can meet in the morning before it gets crowded. Thoughts?

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!

Also, I'm flying into Chicago and planning to drive down on Friday afternoon--anyone need a ride?

Ladybug, did you find any cheap flights from NYC->Chicago? 😀 I might be driving down too, but I also might bring my parents!

American had a RT for $218 (plus taxes I think it is about $234).

Let me know what you plan on doing--maybe we can arrange something.

The Open House is a lot of fun, and you all will definitely enjoy it! Unfortunately, I have a class trip that day so I can't come this year (it's the same trip that a lot of other acceptees have mentioned on FB). But in past years, they have had cute little booths (mainly geared towards kids, but it was still fun), like milk a cow, palpating the rumen in a fistulated cow, a tour of radiology and the MRI machine, a canine hydro PT demo, the wildlife clinic raptors probably will be out, etc. There was one year I went, and they had a zebra in the LA clinic! (although it seems like that happens a lot, b/c I remember the tour guide mentioning there was a zebra there rather recently too lol).

It would be fun for us to meet up, though! I wonder if our class can have a little get together or something a few days before classes in Aug... 🙂

We had a bar crawl - highly recommended! There will also be a program the Wednesday/Thursday before orientation on Friday. It's called iVLE (Illinois Veterinary Leadership Experience). Ice breakers, games, and such.

I know we're all gonna be swamped with work, but how is the social scene in Urbana-Champaign and at the vet school in general. I'm not from Illinois and wouldn't be coming with a husband or knowing anyone out there so I was just wondering... I mean, if people are into bar crawls then I assume people are pretty friendly and there is stuff to do.

People are super friendly here! Trust me, even though you will be swamped (but hopefullly it will be under control with the new curriculum...) you will make time to go out to the bars to relieve a little stress. Chambana is the definition of a "college town" - huge variety of bars (crappy undergrad 19 and over bars, country bars, sports bars, dance clubs, and then bars like the Blind Pig which are very classy with a ton of exotic beers).

I'm really excited you guys get the new curriculum - right now it's pretty ridiculous. "Too much content" was definitely an understatement...

For those of you on the waitlist I've decided to decline my seat and scholarship. I havent sent the form in yet as I'm trying to survive finals. Hopefully they go to all the well deserving SDN'ers on here.

Best of luck!

So, speaking of waiting lists, does anyone know if Illinois takes whoever is next on the waiting list or if an OOS spot opens they take someone on the list from OOS??
