Incoming M1 c/o 2020 Back to school thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just got a whiteboard, I've always liked practicing pathways on them, and want one in my apartment, so I don't want to spend all my time at the library, so I can hang out with my cat. (Yeah, I'm a crazy cat person) Also looking at getting a computer monitor I can plug my laptop in. Other than that, just checking email, facebook group a lot just because I'm terrified that I'll forget to send in a random form and not be allowed to start med school (still being neurotic after being accepted) Definitely not pre-studying at all. Trying to work a lot and save money, and getting married in June!
Congrats on getting married
I recommend checking tigerdirect, newegg and slickdeals for daily deals. I swear I see cheap monitors like every other day.

Also, is there anyone else who feels more nostalgic than excited at this point? I'm definitely looking forward to starting a new journey, but I also feel this crippling sense of longing for college and home, and for all the times I had with my close friends. It makes me sad knowing that after hanging out with them every day for 4 years in college and seeing two of my close friends 1-2 times a month so far during my gap year, I'll only be seeing them maybe 2-3 times a year now, at least for the foreseeable future. Anyone else feel that way?
Someone told me once that humans have a way of romanticizing the past. But I'm definitely with you. I totally have been feeling nostalgic. I just graduated this weekend. I'm still in a state of denial that my time at my UG is over. I'm living in my same place until August, and since my Med school is only seven hours away I keep telling myself I'll be up here a lot. It does help that my fiance, soon to be wife, will be finishing up her degree and playing final season of soccer next semester, so I will be coming back, but probably not as much as I think I will!

I definitely will check these, have mostly just been looking at Amazon. And thank you, super excited!

Zipcar? Uhaul? Roommate?
I don't understand how you're going to get any desk without use of a car.
Ohhhhh, Zipcar or Uhaul might be a thing once I get there. Otherwise, I'm stuck with delivery fees LOL.

1 Zipcar van day to pick up a bunch of free/cheap Craigslist furniture seems like it would put you ahead, cost-wise.

You get over the nostalgia quickly enough. I miss some undergrad friends dearly, but you get used to not seeing them and then you meet new people.

I'm lucky enough to be moving into a furnished apt. Saving some $$ (living with non-med student in the middle of a PhD)

Don't those cost more in the long-term, though? Or do you just mean that the other tenant already has furniture?

The other tenant has been there for 3 yrs, I think. I got lucky. Rent and utilities is just over $500/month and no car needed, so my COL will be under $10K/yr (which is important when the school's tuition is $60k)

I need to seriously downsize the number of belongings that I've accumulated over the course of 8 years before I move to San Francisco. Haven't figured out housing yet but my guess is I'll be limited to renting a small single bedroom because DANG the COL is high up there. Part of me is hoping to get off the waitlist of my local state school so I don't have to deal with the hassle of moving!

I currently live in SF and I feel for you; housing here is such a pain. It's hard to sign a lease before the month you move in (like something posted on Craigslist today will say "Need you to move in on June 1!") A bedroom in an apartment will run you at least $1000/month, don't even know what 1-BRs cost nowadays (maybe $2500 or more??) The city is amazing, but I'm excited to be moving somewhere a little less expensive.

Got my acceptance in October and graduated in December so I've been letting my brain just rot away for the past 5-6 months. Quitting my job in June and travelling until I start in August.

I have a lease signed in the new city and am thankful that my girlfriend will be moving with me. We have furniture and stuff from our old apartment which is nice. Having someone who you actually like and are compatible with to split rent/utilities is great.

Plan on buying a whiteboard and professional clothes before I start. I was going to buy an iPad Pro, but I think I'll hold off on that until I feel that it will actually be useful to my studies. My Macbook Pro from 2011 works fine and I don't think I've ever shut it off in the 5 years I've had it. Hope it doesn't quit on me anytime soon.

I'm both super nervous and very excited to start. I can't help but feel that everyone is going to be way smarter than me and I'm going to have to work 2x as hard to keep up :x but hopefully those are just jitters. Congrats and good luck to everyone! We worked hard to get here, but now the real fun begins :hardy:

I'm considering giving my computer the full refresh before I go...backing up everything, reinstalling the OS, and reinstalling/setting up only the programs I want, etc. Sure, it'll be a bit of a pain, but less than doing the same once med school actually starts.

I am a non-trad and it has been a year since I was in post-bacc classes or studying for the MCAT. I saw a cell bio pathway the other day and was like "Uhhhhhh what?" and it really, truly scared me. It's the first time I haven't felt confident like "I can do this, I can go back to school with the UG biochem majors!"

Anyone else feeling like this? I think I might spend a few weeks (between vacation and school starting) watching Khan Academy and reading my old bio textbooks to keep myself sharp. There have been enough people doubting me along the way in this career change, I can't let them be right!

Seeing the words "tyrosine kinase" the other day made me hiss a little. I haven't taken a legit science class since graduating undergrad. My MPH courses this past year have shied away from all really scientific jargon. I don't even want to think about pre-studying though. I just want to enjoy this summer enough before starting, ya know?

I am moving into my apartment June 15th and my classes start August 1st. I am looking forward to a month and a half of nesting and really making the place my own. Also looking forward to when back to school supplies go on sale. I need ALL the white board markers.

Ever since I got my acceptance, my life has taken a turn downwards at 60mph. The first month in, I was sleeping in till freaking 1pm everyday, playing bball...
...outside of the school. When a couple of guys who were up to no good, started making trouble in your neighborhood. You got in one little fight and your mom got scared and said, "you're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel Aire!"

Sorry only thing I could think of when I got to that point of your post lol.

...outside of my school. When a couple of gunners who studied more than anyone should, started reading first aid like they understood. Your class rank tanks and your mom got stressed and said, "you're reapplying Carib where the competition is more fair!"

Has anyone seen any *good* threads about studying with a shortened preclinical curriculum? Time to do something about the anxiety lol

I work at a school with a 1.5 yr preclinical curriculum (and there are MD students in my lab). It doesn't seem to cause them any trouble or make anything more stressful and I don't think they study any differently than they would at a different school. They were only able to shorten the curriculum by cutting down on redundant information.

I wish my school had a 1.5 preclinical period since the benefit of starting clinicals early >> having extra to learn, so don't be anxious

anyone doing some extra health/exercise stuff these last couple months? I'm bad at knowing anything gym related lol

I was thinking of maybe doing something like Insanity or P90X.... I wanna lose some weight for that white coat ceremony 👍👍

Yeah I'm trying to get into a good rhythm/habit with it before all the classes get underway. Ran 8 miles yesterday, which is the farthest I think I've ever gone 👍

P90X30 is great if you're looking for something intense but short. Great workouts 30 min a day.. I started toning and dropping chub within a week of doing it. Fitness Blender is also great on YouTube as all of their workouts are free and they have so many HIIT workouts!

thanks, I''ll look into both! Do either of them require buying any extra equipment?

Nope not really! For p90x30 they do have strength/resistance workouts that require a chin up bar or resistance bands. You can definitely do it with just the cheap bands or sub those workouts with another. FB has hundreds of no equipment workouts or you can skip the dumbbells. For an efficient workout i like to have light and heavy dumbbells to challenge myself. If you have dumbbells or resistance bands you'll be good for both, if you wanna save cash you can simply modify the exercises or do without em. Either way you'll get a great sweat and workout out of their vids 🙂

Is anyone updating their wardrobe before starting school? Besides my interview suit which is way too formal, I really don't own any professional clothes. How often do you think we'll need to dress up?

I definitely need to go out and buy some business/business casual clothes. Apparently we're supposed to dress business casual for orientation at my school.

I think we'll have clinic days every Wednesday at my school. I'm trying to add to my wardrobe, but I'm having a hard time finding slacks that fit a small waist and a...healthy behind...

+1 on the fitness blender

It's free and try have a nice search engine to pick specific types of work outs you want by time, equipment, and area

I feel your struggle. It took me forever to find scrubs for work that were long enough/fit

Story of my life. My quads are also huge from lifting so I wind up buying about two sizes too big for my waist and then getting everything tailored. I've had some success switching over to men's slim fits, but many have too long of a crotch, I think Ralph Lauren was the most fitting for me. Too many women's slacks are 'skinny fitting' and inappropriate.
Spouse and I agreed that as soon as we have some decent income coming in, everything needs to be customed.

Regarding scrubs... why are they made for people with no shoulder / arms ? Is it assumed that all doctors are atrophying considerably ? I float in every brand in order to be able to get them off at the end of day.

If any of you are interested in some comic relief and secondhand stress, check out #ikeaproblems on Twitter. It makes me both incredibly excited and nervous for the coming months.

Step 1: look at rent prices
Step 2: cry

Disclaimer: I'm looking for a 1 bedroom/studio, since I don't want to deal with strangers.

Step 3: look at van prices so you can live in the parking lot.

http://www.businessinsider.com/why-google-employees-live-in-the-parking-lot-2015-10

"A 23-year-old Google software engineer named Brandon has been living in a truck in the company parking lot for the past five months to save on rent...Plus, the commute from the parking lot is a few seconds on foot, rather than hours sitting in traffic commuting from San Francisco, where many Google employees live."

Try Express! I have the same exact issue with pants normally, but they fit me perfectly and appropriately. Some of their other clothing can skew inappropriate or tacky, but generally their business wear fits well, is decent quality, and is inexpensive. They are always having sales too.

Signed a lease yesterday, y'all. Things are getting real.

jealous, I just started looking and I'm super overwhelmed...not familiar with the new city I'm moving to at all.

Also, I'm still trying to decide if I want to seek out roommates or just live on my own. So. Many. Decisions.
