As the title and my status says, I'm a part of the very fortunate to gain an acceptance to medical school. Of course on top of the stress of realizing that it's now showtime, I've started to really think about what potential specialities I could see myself in. With that being said, I've developed a top 5 list of specialities that I think are reasonable as a DO applicant. Those are (in no particular order) IM-most likely subspecialize in Pulm/CC or Heme/Onc, PM&R, Anesthesia, Neuro, and EM. Am I setting my sights too high with these specialties/subspecialties? I just want to start researching and talking with potential specialties to get a feel for what it's like while I wait to start med school next year. Thanks for the help!
I will nicely state that it is kind of early. You can google those specialties though just to get an idea. I wouldn't worry about any of that yet. Just start med school first and work on doing well in your classes. Most med students change their specialty of interest several times throughout med school and don't really get a great idea of what they would like to pursue until after their rotations in 3rd and 4th year when you are actually "in" the heart of it all. Best of luck in medical school and congrats on being part of the very few people accepted to med school.

Seems like OP is asking in an indirect way if going to a DO school will limit his options in the fields he thinks he's interested in right now. IMO, you're absolutely not setting your sights too high in any of the residencies you listed. There are tons of DOs in any of them.

Best advice I've gotten since starting school was from an M4 who said dont even really start thinking about specialties too much until you see how you do on step 1. Your performance there can drastically "raise" or lower your residency expectations. She'd be the first to tell you she did not think of herself as a top student until she destroyed step 1 and is now interviewing for ortho. Enjoy the next 9 months of bliss before school starts.
