Interview 2007

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm actually more worried about an invite accidentally getting filtered to my spam folder or me accidentally deleting it in the morning email sweep. I found myself wading through the Viagra-for-hot-transgendered-donkey-anal-sex emails from Therefore S Botulism in hopes of finding an interview email I missed

Haha, yeah when I was going through it I worried about that too. Maybe the spam filter will think it's one of those Nigerian scam ads? They kind of sound similar...

Interview invite: We have read your application and are impressed with your credentials and would very much like to invite you to participate in our interview day. Please call my personal assistant to schedule time to meet.

Nigerian scam: We have heard about you and are impressed with your credentials and would very much like to invite you to participate in this amazing opportunity, all it requires is a phone call to my personal assistant...

.... JHU by email and eras today 🙂

Hopefully those other school will get in gear... finish downloading applications and make some choices....

Just heard from George Washington by email. My first interview, yay!

I have been pondering this for the past couple of months, so humor me (and yes I am making sweeping generalizations). At any point in the last 50 years, has Baltimore been a livable (ie something to do besides visit burned-out buildings) city? I've only been through there twice, but it was not a pleasant experience (and admittedly limited).

UNC by snail mail.👍 Does anyone have any advice as to good areas to look for housing for a family in or around Chapel Hill? Congrats to everyone on there interview invites!😀

UCSFbound, I have got to agree about Baltimore. My wife ran the Baltimore half-marathon two years ago. As I walked to various points with my little boy to watch the race I was amazed by how many times I thought, "Man, I am glad that a cop is standing right next to me." I don't know if it still exists, but an aquaintance of mine who interviewed for med school at JHU in 2002 said that he was given a Johns Hopkins "safe zone" map when he arrived in Baltimore. It's too bad that such an amazing institution is not in a more attractive/safe city.

Congrats! Looks like a bunch of outstanding candidates this year on this forum. 🙂

Actually Baltimore has improved during the past several years. However, many folks still continued to be scared away by the city.

baby steps...

ok when should one get nervous eckk!!

ok when should one get nervous eckk!!

depends on when you had your application in...also how many letters do you have uploaded?

most programs will send out interview invites before Dean's Letters are out.

if your application is complete in september, i'd start getting worried if you haven't received any interview invites by november.

Depends on what you plan to do. Say for instance you're an IMG who got the complete application submitted in early September. A month has gone by and you've only heard from one or two places. It's probably worth applying to a few more, depending on your comfort level.

Baltimore has really taken some dramatic steps in the last 5-10 years. I was there for undergrad, and many of the DMZ type neighborhoods are now full of Starbucks and $350k condos.. also, the traffic in/around Baltimore is nothing compared to DC, NY or LA.. it's easy to live outside the city and commute to the hospital.

Don't write it off. Great program, cool city.

Are you trash-talking me again?! *sniff, sniff*😛

Lots of residents from UNC and Duke live in the southwest part of Durham, Highway 54/Hope Valley Rd (Highway 751) area. There are pretty affordable neighborhoods around 15-20 minutes of both medical centers in that corridor.

UPMC (weirdest interview invite 😕 )

Hey Brigham! Give me some 😍 (My app has been complete for over 3 weeks.) 😳 (I know, I know...patience young grasshopper.)

UPMC (weirdest interview invite 😕 )

UPMC =?U of Pitt?

Man do they still do group interview days?
That's silly stuff

I was wondering if anyone if getting their airfare paid for or hotel paid for when invited for interviewing. I have gotten discounts on hotels but that's it. I'm trying to group my interviews according to location to cut down on costs. Any word on programs doing this?

I don't think that happens very often (if ever) in pathology.

Have to wait for attending postions for that treatment..

What about out-of-the match contracts? Does that still happen? I've heard it's possible especially in path.

I was told that this happens if you are an IMG or >1 year removed from medical school. Other than that, I think you have to go through the match just like the rest of us.

UCSFbound is correct. I looked all this up 6 months ago because I'm graduating in December and wanted to start residency in January. If you're an AMG after Sept 06, you pretty much have to participate in the match (if everyone is playing by the rules, that is.)

As for travel perks, there are a few programs that will foot your hotel bill.

U of Pitt.
The email sounds as if they don't expect me to interview there. 🙁 They want a response within 1 week and if they don't hear from me then they assume I am not interested and will be removed from consideration. 👎

There are quite a few (unless they stopped doing it) programs that give you one night hotel stay. One also provided $$ for travel (Iowa). Utah gave me a second hotel night stay. Hotel was paid for also at Vermont, Dartmouth, Penn. Indiana and Wash U said they would pay but I didn't go on those interviews.

St. John's Hospital, Detroit, MI
St. Joseph's Hospital, Phoenix, AZ

how "good" would you consider St. John's program? I believe I remember seeing that it had 1 spot available last year that did not fill??

For those anticipating and/or stressing out about why you didn't get a Stanford invite, let me pass on a message that we don't do "tier" system invites...i.e. we don't invite the people we want earlier and make the 'tweeners wait or something. I can't remember what all minimum things they need, but something like letters of rec (at least 1 from a pathologist), transcript, board scores, +/- personal statement -- you DO NOT need to have your dean's letter in to nec. get an invite. Our team of faculty reviewing candidates persistently update the application list from ERAS for review.

Also, mid-Oct we sorta put a pause on invites with the intent that we'll just wait until Dean's letters get sent out Nov 1st (for many schools), so don't freak out then.

Now obviously this doesn't mean everyone that didn't get an invite yet is sure to get one later; basically, i'm sending this out to calm fears and relax people about others' posts declaring their invites. If you're a good candidate, you'll be noticed, trust me.😀

so programs really do this, huh? So if i get invited to interview in october I shoudl be happy but if thye put me off until january, they really don't want me?

Unversity of Utah via email.😀 Thanks for the info on Chapel Hill, Path Mama!

How is the atmosphere when applicants are interviewing on the same day. Some of the interview invites seem to last all day so does this cause any friction between fellow applicants that anyone has found so far?

A better question to the one above is: Do attendings and residents pimp the applicants on slides at all during the "tour" after interviewing and if so do they compare applicants based on this after interviewing session? (invite to watch how residents signout cases for example)

Just an update on UVA: it is my understanding that we won't be sending out interview invites until October.

Woah...no. That would be scary.

Quite the opposite. It's fun to meet other applicants going into path and swap stories about different places you've rotated. One guy I met on the interview trail wound up in the same program I did.

I know it's easier said than done, but just take a deep breath and relax. Path is very laid back, and the interview process is no exception.

i think alot of places are like this.

how are people strategizing their interview trail? it is so tempting to accept every invite that comes through at first but then i feel like i'm going to end up with a schedule loaded with places that aren't high on my list without any time for the ones i really want to go to.
also if you get your applicatoin in early is there a time when you can be pretty sure that you are not going to get an invite? like by the end of december?

I had a couple of those days. It wasn't a concern for me because I was a superior applicant. It actually made me feel better. 😉

In actuality it doesn't matter - your days are usually staggered so you barely see each other anyway. At two of the three places this occurred at, we all had lunch together, but it was all friendly anyway. At another place, they sent the two candidates on different lunches.

I wasn't pimped on slides at all. I have heard that happens occasionally for fellowship interviews, but probably then it is just to see how you think, not to test you on whether you are right or not. I was shown one slide during my path interviews, and that was because I walked in while the guy was looking at a case.

In regards to the last post, I think end of december is pretty much when interview offers will stop. There may be rare exceptions. About half of my interviews came before the middle of october, another half after the deans letter.

I've got interviews at programs that I'm really interested in and those which I've scheduled to help work out the interview bugs. That constitiues what hopefully is my "first wave" of interviews. I'm obviously hoping that I'll have invites from more of my top ten programs in the near future and can then afford to be more selective about which interview offers to accept. I'm spending more than I'd like to, but hey...it's only a) money and b) my future for the next four years and beyond. right?!

Keep ya head up!

hey guys...congrats on all your interviews. here is what i have going on so far...i'm not sure if this info is helpful to anyone??? for what it's worth:

submitted application (which was completet w LORs, PS and transcripts) on 9/21.

Stanford
Brigham
Yale
Mt. Sinai
Cedars Sinai
BU-not an invite, just that they will be giving out interviews starting mid-Oct.

All invites came within a two day period, about two work days after submission. It's been quiet since.

I try not to read too much into anything.

ps I only applied to the west coast and northeast. Philly too.
