I just heard of this for the first time. Do you have to write an essay AT your interview???

If so.....what about?

I hope I'm understanding this wrong 😱

yes you have to write a short essay. i do not know know what the point of it is, or adcom even bother reading it. i was told that it was there for test your english composition skills. topics vary. i can't really remember mine but it was simliar to the typical interview question. dont sweat it too much. you will be fine.

Most, if not all, schools require you to write a short essay at the interview (assuming that they do have interviews in the first place; some schools don't even have interviews). When I went to the interview at the Univ of Maryland - Baltimore, my interview question was something like: "Describe a significant decision you had to make in the past year, and if you were given a second chance, would you make the same decision". As for the essay at the Univ of Washington, it was something like, "What do you see wrong with our nation's health care system and if you were to change anything, what would it be". Some other questions that my friends have gotten are: "What characteristics do you think a pharmacist should possess" and "If you were a TV producer, how would you portray the hospital pharmacist".

I'm not quite sure what the essay is for, but I'm guessing it's for some type of assessment. Sometimes they will even ask you (during the actual interview) why you wrote what you wrote. It's really no big deal, so don't stress about it too much. 🙂

I haven't had my interview at UNC yet, but the people who got accepted last year told me that at their interview, they were asked to write an essay, and then the interviewer asked them questions regarding their essays. I guess different schools use the essay differently. Some asks you questions about the essays, some doesn't.

Wow......I can't believe I haven't heard about this til now. I don't know why but it sounds so much scarier when you have a short amount of time to write them an essay.
I guess having to do all those in-class essays in my english pre-reqs will come in handy now (i hope)!

Actually, not all schools will require you to do an essay. Both schools I applied to didn't require it.

Which schools are you applying to? I noticed in another thread that you said you wanted to get into UBC. They definetely do not require you to write an essay during the interview. However, you do have to include some personal statements with your application package.

I'm applying to pretty much all of the Universities in Canada (except quebec) and I haven't decided which (if any) in the states yet.
Do you go to UBC? Yah I noticed that you have to write personal statements, which is much better, because I'll have time to prepare 😀 .

I bet schools do this to make sure you didn't "borrow" your writing from the internet or make a rough draft of your personal statement and then get your mom or somebody to completely write it over for you.

Yeah, I'm in the pharmacy program at UBC.

When I was going through the application process I also applied to the University of Toronto. They actually make you write a sort of personality test, which includes MC questions as well as essays and short answers. There are actually no interviews for UofT (unless they really feel necessary)! The test is the "equivalent" to an interview. I found that pretty bizarre.

I didn't apply to any other canadian universities, since they accepted so few out-of-province students, but from my own research, I didn't come across any which required you to write essays at the interview.

Yah, that sounds reasonable. If they just ask regular interview questions and have you write your response in an essay that's not that bad. But if they asked me some skill testing question about a certain illness or medication or something to do with pharmacy that I don't even know yet, that would suck. But they wouldn't do that, would they? To see how much you know so far about pharmacy or something?

yes, i did at both of mine. one was a short answer essay question that asked who i would put on a us stamp. the other school gave us newspaper articles and asked us to summarize. they were both ******ed - schools just want to check that you can read/write decently. if you know english, you're ok!

Oh my god, congratulations!! That's so awesome. How many schools did you apply to? Are you going crazy? When I get accepted I'm just going to jump up and down for a month!!! 😀

😀 Thanks! Yeah, I found out I got accepted while I was at work (at the beginning of July) and the first thing I did was run out to the nearest payphone to phone my parents. I think I stood at the phone for a good 20 seconds before I remembered my own phone number (I couldn't even remember our area code)! So many things were going through my mind. It really took awhile to really sink in though, to tell you the truth. It was probably the most relief I've ever felt in my life.

I can imagine! That's awesome. So are you going to live on campus?

Nope. This will actually be my fifth consecutive year at UBC (I just finished a BSc in Biology). I live in Richmond so I'll continue commuting.

Oh, and to answer your question, I only applied to UBC and UofT.
