Has anyone heard anything from Cali programs?

My classmate got invites last week on some cali ones. I haven't heard back from any of the cali ones I applied to tho. Hopefully something this week or next! Be positive!

THANKS! I applied to 10 all over, and was fortunate enough to receive an invite to one program on east coast... but haven't heard from anywhere else yet.

As of this morning...

2 interviews
0 rejections
4 practicing the ancient "silence is golden" lol

I just heard back from Boston, my first interview!!

I am starting to not like the "silence is golden" rule 😛

I've heard back from 3: 2 in FL, 1 in Boston, all interviews! 😀
almost all of mine have closed their applications now, so hopefully more replies will be rolling in soon.

I applied to 12 Chicago/Milwaukee/Minneapolis area residencies and finally heard back from my first 2 yesterday (1 invite, 1 "wait list" which may be code for reject), both in Milwaukee. Has anyone else heard from residencies in these areas?

Seems like the norm this year was applying between 8-15 programs. One person I know applied to 19 😳

Congrats everyone! Hopefully I can share some good news too!

Anyone willing to post which programs they got invites from?

My invites have been from programs which I have had some sort of contact with (either a preliminary phone call, kinda like a mini interview or had had clinical rotations at that site) so I'm guessing that's why I heard earlier on. I had been told not to get upset if I didn't hear until late january, so I'm expecting the rest of the replies to take a while.

I applied to 11 places. I'm hoping to get invites to half!

I received an interview at a hospital in Chicago.

I applied to 12 programs. So far I've gotten one invite and one rejection. I'm supposed to hear back from on program by the end of the week. I'm assuming if I don't hear back by Thursday night from that program, it will be a rejection on Friday. 🙁

I wouldn't assume that-I was offered an interview from a program on the day they said they would let candidates know if they got an interview. I don't think all hope is lost on Thursday night! Good luck to you!

Stjny, do you mind me asking which one? I know U of Chicago had a really early deadline, like mid-december, but I didn't apply there. Just curious if its a place I applied and haven't heard from or not.

Another rejection. Not a surprise but still upsetting. It's a program that I did a lot of rotations with and had multiple preceptors from there write me a recommendation.

I wish I could go back and redo this application process as far as which programs I would apply to. I would consider myself a pretty good applicant, but this experience has made me realize that on paper, I'm not a superstar that it appears the bigger name programs are looking for, which made up the majority of the programs I applied to.

Thanks, that's good to know and gives me a little bit of hope. This whole process is so stressful!

Are there any smaller community programs or candidate programs you could still apply to? I applied to a wide spectrum of programs from big name institutions to local candidate community programs. I still have deadlines passing this week so you could maybe look into other residency program options if you are worried about not having enough interviews.

James Peters and Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn. Have you heard from either of those?

A classmate of my mine got an interview offer from the Bronx VA (which I believe is James Peters). Another classmate of mine got a phone call with an interview offer from U of Chicago yesterday (I can't remember who was asking about that).

2 interview offers so far, 9 waiting.

Edit: Ah, sorry, not James Peters, another New York State VA

After I realized that I'm most likely going to get rejected from all the big name programs, I applied to a few smaller ones that I had looked into before. I've gotten an interview with one of them already, so I'm happy I did.

My issue is that the specialty I'm interested in is really only at the bigger institutions. It's not my only interest, but it ranks pretty high. This makes the rejections a little more tough to deal with.

So are you thinking you want to do PGY2? Because you could get trained at a smaller place and then apply to the bigger places with the PGY2 in the specialty you want. I get that the rejections are tough but I would think a residency at a smaller place with the possibility of doing what you want to eventually is better than no residency.

Yeah, I want to do a PGY-2. I just assume that in order to get PGY-2 in a certain specialty, you would need exposure to that area your PGY-1 year. I'm not 100% sure how true that is. Would a program take someone as their Oncology resident, for example, when they didn't do an oncology rotation because their PGY-1 program didn't offer it type deal. I didn't mark off the smaller named programs because of their name. I marked them off because they didn't offer rotations in that area or it wasn't something their hospital did.

After I started getting rejections from the bigger programs, I realized that I wanted a residency bad enough even though it wouldn't allow me to pursue my first option as far as specialties go. I have other interest, and I really want the extra training and clinical opportunities that a residency would provide so I applied to some extra programs. I'm glad I'm did. As disheartening as this process is, I'm staying positive and know things will fall into place for me. 🙂

I slightly feel the same. I definitely should have diversified my applications more.

I too have the same issue as you with wanting to get a really good rotation or two in your area of interest during PGY1 as it helps with getting into PGY2 and also develops your skills. This usually correlates to being at a facility that has a PGY2 (imo) in that area such that you get a really good rotation with the supporting faculty. Additionally, with so many programs offering early commit and the limited number of specialty programs, you almost need to try to get your foot in the door first year or you're competing for a very limited number of programs.

I'm sitting at 2 interviews, 4 rejects (3 waitlistish sounding and 1 flat out no  ), 6 crickets. While again, I wish I had diversified more as the numbers aren't looking great at this point, I will say my second invite was from a program that imo is way better than 3 of my rejects and equal to the 4th. So I guess competitive really somewhat varies from program to program.

is there somewhere that I can find a list of programs that offer early commitment or do the programs that have it list it on their website? thank you and good luck!

This is exactly how I feel. It's going to be harder to get next year when it seems they accept those already in their program.

I just got another rejection a few minutes ago. Now, I'm at 3 interviews, 5 rejections, and 5 unknowns. Pretty sure I'll be getting a couple more rejections soon. The other 3 are pretty good possibilities.

Do programs usually send rejections? Or will they leave it open?

If i don't get a residency this year, i'll try again next year. I'm sure it will be harder since i'll be out of school, but nothing wrong with trying.

Keep your head up, and do well on the invite offers you have... Last year a good friend applied to 1 place and matched... Just as long as you have an interview opportunity, there is hope!!

I guess I wish I would have known people actually put in service presentations or final rotations presentations on their app- I only put national and state, which I realize most people don't have a lot of and I have a few. Still my program is super heavy on presentations and I did at least 2-6 per each rotation - I am taking major full on sometimes hour long talks not topic discussions. Had I known other people are that padding their app - I wild have had 30 presentations by the end of rotation 7.

This is driving me crazy. I feel like, and have been told, I am a fairly competitive candidate, but so far all I've gotten are four rejections and no invites, with six programs left to hear from.

I don't think rotation presentations are that important, it's just a rotation...it's basically a learning assignment, not something you went out of your way to accomplish.

I feel you, I have been told the same thing and have also only received rejections thus far. I applied to mostly larger, university-affiliated programs, and I'm starting to wonder if maybe I should have diversified a bit more...I can only imagine how many apps they are getting.

Anyway - I'm right there with you! It's hard to believe it sometimes but it really is true - the process is so crazy competitive and we just have to remember that even if we don't get an interview or end up matching or whatever, it doesn't necessarily mean we aren't worthy of getting a residency.

There are just SO many great candidates out there for so few spots! Plus there is no way to know quite what each program is looking for...seems like some people are getting interview invites they didn't expect from their "reach" programs, while getting rejected from programs they thought of as "safety" choices. So...yeah. This process is really stressful.

Just know you are not alone, and hopefully there will be some good news for us coming up soon!

1) congratulations to all who got invites already🙂

2) for those with invites but complaining of not getting more...just be thankful and make the most of what you have 😉 this is not a pissing contest 👍

3) the obvious - it's not over yet

Know how you feel. I received a rejection earlier this morning.
Most of my deadlines were a week to two weeks ago so I'm bracing myself for rejections

Like Goldfish, I'm gonna focus on applying to retail jobs.

Yeah but apparently like a bunch of people I know even judging by this thread did that. I wonder if its hurting my chances.

However, some residency directors see more presentations as better communication skills. I have never been an advocate of huge CVs stating everything that the applicant has done, but honestly for residency having an 8 page CV may be a good thing, as if you have a program with a scoring rubric, chances are there won't be a point deduction for a CV being too long, and all the things you did will be there, with the potential of earning more points. However, if you put every little thing like IPPE tasks, they still won't be counted.

Now for jobs, 8 page CVs are just stupid IMO.

I feel like this was me last year...I applied to 12 big name programs with the exact same thought process and didn't match anywhere. Overall, I'm happy enough with how things have turned out at this point, but I think it would have been more beneficial for me to get into a smaller program versus no program at all. I just had that all or none mentality at this time last year. Obviously it is a personal choice for each individual, but I think you are making the right decision to apply to other programs even if they aren't exactly what you had in mind.

I completely agree. I think we all need to be grateful for the invites we are getting. If you look at the match statistics, the chances of you matching past rank 4 or 5 are very small anyway so all hope is not lost if you only get a few interviews.

If you actually look at the match statistics most people don't even RANK 4-5 programs. So in reality, if you applied to 10, and have 4 interviews with some rejections, you are already in a great position. I'm in the same "nervousness" boat so I understand, but the mentality of applying to 12 programs and having 10 interviews is just blatantly unrealistic.

Couldn't agree more. I applied to 11 places with the minimum hopes of at least 2 interviews and my goal around 4-6. Ideally you'd like to think you could get 8-10 but the fact of the matter is that there are very few students who could realistically expect that. Moral of the story, if you get even 1 interview, be happy to have that 1 and go into the interview with confidence that you can get a spot!
