INTERVIEWED AT UCLA? this is your thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm kind of new to these message boards, so I don't know how to quote. But in reference to XENON's comment about thinking that 4/30 is acceptances and the rest are waitlisted, I highly doubt that's the case, just because with every batch of letters that have been sent out thusfar, there have been acceptances, waitlists, and hold categories.

Personally, I'm thinking that they're trying to close up shop partly because the students have to decide on one school by May 15th, and once that decision is made they are going to want to make living arrangements etc.

It's tough to wait, but all we can do is hope for the best and have faith that no matter what the outcome is, our lives will be better because of it.

That's just my 17 cents. Good luck everyone!

Mine is still blank.. no hamstas for this hamsta yet. =( i got antsy so i called them today.. the lady at the admissions office told me that they will send out all final decisions by the may 15 deadline and then starting june they will look at the waitlist people and decide on them once they start getting withdrawals from the acceptees. having no word from them just means that they are still trying to decide on my status. it doesn't mean it's at the bottom of a pile till people start withdrawing. (someone had misinformed me otherwise)

****, i just checked my status page, which i haven't done in a month or two, and it says that I still need to send in my transcripts, which i did a while back. WTF?!?! I guess I should call them.

someone tell us if the class is full, if chances r still good, if our wait is neutral positive or negative.

Hi! I just got a waitlist letter in the mail today. Do any of you know what unranked second priority means? Is there a first priority or is that the people who are accepted?

-mdcurious

hey mdcurious, now you got me curious! your waitlist letter actually says that you are on the unranked second priority list ? I thought UCLA only had two lists waitlist and hold list. The people on the waitlist have a 40-60% chance of getting in, but now I'm wondering if that 40-60% chance is for all the waitlist people or just the waitlist first priority? Are the people who got their waitlist letter way back in feb-march first priority or should we call and find out which priority we are? If someone knows more info about the waitlist and how many categories it has, it'll be great. Thanks!

When I talked with the admissions office, I was told there were two "waitlists," the unranked waitlist (good chance to get in) and the hold (notta good chance to get it). I've heard that a bunch on here too, so I'm guessing thats how it goes.

a third to half of the "unranked waitlist" (the first priority list) is taken. the "hold" group is the second priority list. i was led to believe that was what it was called on the waitlist letter, but that was back in march, so perhaps they changed their wording because i know many people were calling confused since the "hold" group did not specify whether it was first or second priority. unfortunately, if you're on the second list, your chances are not good. the third to the half taken is off the first priority only -- at least that's what the office has told me the two separate times i called. good luck!

this is getting depressing. i am so stressed

that's weird. I was put on the "unranked second priority waitlist". According to the previous posts, the unranked waitlist part means that i still have a chance because it didn't say "on hold." but . . . it also said second priority. so, i'm confused. what does this all mean??????

thanx!!!

eunice - the mail took two days to get to my house and i live in california. hopefully, you'll hear better news than me.

i was waitlisted back in march and my letter only said "unranked waitlist". i wonder if they are starting to rank it? i am pretty sure that there is also a separate list called the "hold" list. i think your best bet will be to call the admissions office and have them explain this to you. i might call sometime in the near future.
good luck mdcurious.

hey guys why isnt anyone as worried as me, why arent u getting stressed when u hear of your colleagues getting second priority waitlists?? maybe im exaggerating but its my only hope

I'm excited to hear, don't get me wrong. But at this point, I've been through so many periods of waiting, so many rejections, that it doesn't really get to me anymore. If UCLA is your one hope at attending medical school next year, I wish you the best of luck. Even if it isn't, I still wish you the best of luck.

The way I personally look at it is like this. Although I would love to attend UCLA, the main reason why I'm excited to hear back is to get a decision. If it's good, I'll jump for joy, maybe even twice. But UCLA is the last school I'm waiting to hear from, and it's also my top choice, so even if it's not an acceptance, I can move on to the next step and start planning to attend another school (housing, etc).

Once again, good luck yall. Peace.

its just like waiting for any other school. theres no reason to freak out xenon. UCLA would be great to go to, but I know I've got next to no chance getting in, so theres no reason worrying about it. Just try to breath and enjoy yourself until you get that letter because theres nothing that you can do about it right now.

why dont u have a chance moskeeto??????? 😕

Because I don't have the stellar stats and what not to get me into UCLA, I think I may be on the low side of the average for everything. I interviewed late and I had a TERRIBLE interview. I think these things all together will help get a rejection sent my way. I'd love to go to UCLA, it'd probably be a no brainer on what school to pick if I got in there, but I'm just not seeing it happening. good luck xenon, hopefully you don't have to wait to long. have you gotten in anywhere else?

ive had interviews but no acceptances. kinda sad really, seeing that its not my credentials that made things go wrong, rather prejudice and other things in most cases.

wow first post, and an acceptance! congratulations. Do you mind telling us when your letter was sent and any info about yourself (GPA, MCAT, extra curriculars) that got you over the hump for an outright admissions to UCLA? thanks

Sorry, should have said a bit more. My acceptance was sent on the 23rd of April, interviewed Dec. 14 and hadn't heard a word since then. I think the only thing that got me in was my extra-curriculars cause my numbers aren't that impressive--i'm a bit older (29), have worked in the peace corps, have an mph from UCLA and have done some public health work around LA. 31 mcat and @3.7 gpa. and my interview went pretty well.

good luck to those of you still waiting! hope you hear good news soon.

does anyone know how much the interview counts with respect to the rest of the numbers? thanks.

what did those 30/4 letters say????

I wonder if Fucita got Trix's spot at UCLA - it seems that they would both be placed in the older non-traditional applicant category. Trix sent in her withdrawal on 4/15, and Fucita got her acceptance on 4/23. Don't they say that UCLA has lots of subcommittees to evaluate different groups of applicants, and they try to balance the number from each group in order to have a diverse class? So they would fill in a withdrawal from one group with someone else from that group. I should add that I have no actual basis for this speculation, so please don't take me for an informed source.

In any case, congrats Fucita! Oh yeah, Fucita, did you send any update or interest letters in between your interview and your acceptance?

more updates....cmon... help out

Hey Xenon, you should go check out a movie to relax a little and get your mind off of things. How 'bout X-men 2, I heard its really good.

xenon, the only thing you can do now is to pray if you believe in god, and keep yourself occupied with other things in your life.. that way the wait won't seem so long.. it's like when you diet, it may be not such a good idea to weigh yourself two times a day, but weigh yourself once a week. it's counterproductive to check it so often. same thing with checking ur online status.. not like checking your status increases your chances of getting in. when the good news comes, you will find out. the more you check it, the more you're going to want it. and if you want somethign too much and you don't get it, it may destroy you. And you DON't want that to happen to you.. because YOU know that you deserve to be a doctor.. it's just that the schools were too distracted with other applicants to see that this time around. If you've got what it takes to be an MD, you will get in the next time around. Have faith and the hamsters will come. =)

Hey guys. I received my 4/30 letter and I'm on hold. This is what the letter says:

"Your application ... has been placed in a HOLD category, which is our second priority wait list. Candidates from the HOLD list, are unranked, and will not be considered for vacancies in the class before July."

I guess this means that my outlook does not look good. I'm not sure if the other 4/30 letters were the same, but I wish you guys, and to those who haven't heard yet, good luck!

😱 I just returned from a 10-day trip to Sydney, Australia & the Great Barrier Reef (which totally took my mind off the whole med school application torture process) and found a letter in my mailbox (dated 4/23) offering me an acceptance to UCLA!!! I can't believe it's real! I wasn't expecting to hear anything until maybe late May or early June, since I had kind of a last-minute interview on 4/7. Congrats to Fucita & good luck to everyone who's still waiting...

P.S. Moskeeto, I love your new avatar!

Damn Arginine, you're queen of the UCs! congrats! choices, choices.......

From what it sounds like, the 4/30 letters are HOLD letters. So, XENON, it should be a blessing to you that you are not a part of that group.

I have not received my letter yet, and I do not expect much given the developing trend here. 😱

Congrats Arg, and good luck XENON!!

would you mind telling us how you interview at UCLA went? My interviews did not go so well at UCLA and I interviewed on 3/31, right before you did. I am afraid that I didn't not make the acceptance batch taht you and fucita made.

guys i know it sounds like im stressing out like crazy, but im only relaying the truth since this site is sort of a diary to be looked back upon in the future.

i am blessed that my letter wasnt sent 4/30.

on the other hand, im an international student and thats why im clinging to a small thread of hope.

thanks for the support. congrats arg. will u be going there?

Moskeeto: I believe the queen of UC's title rightfully belongs to Trix, for her impressive triple coup of UCSF/UCLA/UCSD 😉

Blackbird: My student interview was great, but I suspect the quick response was connected to my faculty interview which went freakishly well--partly because my interviewer was originally a psychiatrist-turned-cardiologist who could totally relate to my wish to become a psychotherapist-turned-surgeon. It was also my very last interview, so I was much more relaxed, focused, and confident than at my first interview (UCSF) which, apparently, I completely screwed up (didn't even make it to the waiting list).

Xenon: For me, it comes down to the odd dilemma of UCLA vs. U.C. Davis (I've been living in SF for 13 years and it's hard for me to leave northern Cali) and I've got about 10 days to decide...

do u use instant messenger...id love to chat with u a bit

I didn't remember hearing Trix get into UCSD, but yeah, she's impressive, thats all there is to it. You got into at least 3 yourself tho right? and that aint shabby. Good luck making that decision, It'd be a tough call, but since I'm still holding out hope for UCD, I'm gonna have to say that you must choose UCLA.
Its funny, you go thru phases, one day I feel like I won't get in anywhere and the next day I'm trying to figure out what UC I'd go to if I got into 3 of them. it leaves me hoping that I mercifully just get into one and only one. God, I'll miss California if I don't get in here.

right on Arginine!

you must rock for that type of monster fast turn around. you must be ecstatic. spread some of those happy vibes to kids like me--still waiting! anyways, good luck makin the big choice. can't go wroung with either UCLA or UCD if you ask me.

Moskeeto

I think you and I are in the same boat, waiting to hear from UCD and UCLA. I also had a bad UCLA interview. I'm also on the low end of the spectrum academically and curricular-wise. At this point, it's gonna take something close to a miracle to be accepted.

I'm now wondering if the next acceptance batch will be next month. I don't think I can wait that long

I too was in the 4/30 batch and placed on HOLD. Now I need to decide whether to defer and reapply or go to USC. Any feedback??? Thanks and goodluck to the rest of you.

USC is AWESOME! I would kill to go there, why the hell on earth would you decide to defer the decision? I'm sorry I really do not understand.

I know...I sound like an idiot even considering deferment. USC is a great school. Some would argue that you get a better education because it is affiliated with a county facility. My ego is just a bit bruised right now; UCLA is my top choice. I find myself wondering what would have happened had I applied in June instead of October. Also, USC costs about $80,000 more.

atleast they gave u a decision lol, cuz i feel like ive been put in the forgettable category😀

mfleur - i'm kinda in your situation. i also applied in october and feel that i would have had a better chance if i applied earlier. however, my only acceptace thus far is finch. from what i've been hearing, finch is not that great of a school so i'm thinking about reapplying. i'm sooo~ sad about ucla. it sounds like being on the on hold list is pretty hopeless.

Just wanted to let all of you know that I'll be declining my offer of admission at UCLA. I hope that someone great gets my spot. good luck.

thanks man, good luck at pitt.

...meanwhile we all wait for our unknown future...

by the way has anyone considered doing a year and getting an MS after if not successful this time around?

i am hoping to get an MS in experimental surgery if i have to reapply next year.

anyways i still hope for ucla to share some good news.

Moskeeto-

You will get into at least one of the UC's...mom always said, "good thing scome to those who wait". And by the way, I love your new avatar 😀

UCSF's second look was this past weekend. One of the things that was interesting was the number of people holding acceptances to both UCSF and UCLA....seemed like almost everyone I spoke to was holding UCSF, UCLA and another school, and two people who were deciding between UCSF and UCD.

I wanted to tell them to piss and get off the pot for y'all, but I didn't think it would go over well.....anyway, there will be a lot of movement soon!

i have bad news.

sources tell me that the class is full, so any decision in the near future at most is a waitlist.

where is that violin...+pity+

Hey thanks for the encouragement Trix, I hoping that your mom was right. It's just that waiting part thats a killer. Damn it, 😡 I WANT TO PLAN MY SUMMER!!!!! sorry, had to let that out.

xenon- we've been told over and over again that a waitlist from UCLA is not that bad of a thing to get. I know it'll suck having to worry and fight your way off, but a wailist=pretty good odds of getting in. I'm personally keeping my fingers crossed for a waitlist because I know thats the best I can hope for. after all with all the beautiful people like Trix taking UCSF over UCLA, there's going to be lots of spots opening up.

oh yeah, thanks indiamacbean.

Hi everybody! It's been a little while since I've been on here, but it's great to see all the premed emotion spewing fourth. Let me see if I can make some sense out of all that has been going on here. And just to provide a reference point, I received my waitlist letter (not hold) in March, with all the rest of yous peeps.
It seems to me as if the main people on this board who have received acceptances are non-traditional applicants. I think Arginine and Trix are just a couple of those. For those of us straight out of college kids, it seems as if the waitlist is the first thing med school committees like to dish out. Unless we've established hospitals in third world countries, or done something simply spectactular, we're destined for the waitlist. I myself fall under the asian applicant pool, and even with a 35, 3.85, co-author publications, and ECs to fill a cookie jar, have found no luck in this entire process. I interviewed at every UC except for SF and was placed on the waitlist at every one. Same with Duke. My parents couldn't help but question my abilities, but as I'd like to think, these schools are just putting us on hold, to make sure they aren't missing out on the next great thing to come by.
So here's the silver lining in this whole mess, my friends. The triple threats like Trix, have many choices. I think it's reasonable to assume that the people who received first round acceptances from UCLA, also received acceptances from SF, STanford, SD, Hopkins, Duke, Harvard, etc. And while UCLA is a great school, people tend to choose the higher ranked universities. Therefore, once May 15 rolls around, I'm sure UCLA is going to receive quite a few declinations (is that a word?), and they'll start looking at us "mediocre," traditional apps from the waitlist. So keep those heads up high and keep thinking Bruin. We've all waited this long, and it shouldn't be too much longer (knock on wood). Best of luck to everyone. May this waiting game end soon.

so.. the hamster made the cross-country trip safely and delivered the 1-page letter from UCLA.

yup! as predicted by this thread, I got the HOLD letter.
it starts off as a rejection letter.. then it says "HOLD"
it's all BS. we are the backup for the backup. haha.
i know someone had asked the admissions office.. what was the percentage they said? do people actually get in from the "hold" list ever?

well, i'm all waited out.
of course, i will think about it a bit more, but i'm 95% sure i'm going to withdraw from UCLA and just plan for my life in NJ.

ironically, I was SOOO relieved when I saw the HOLD. initially, of course, i had a bit of disappointment that comes from waiting for something for so long... but this thread had prepared me... i knew i was going to get the HOLD.. and I soon felt at peace about it...It was like I knew I was meant to go to the NJ school. It just feels right. I was a bit scared to go across country, where i only know a few people.

and my parents are really relieved that I'll be staying in NJ! =)
so all in all, I think it worked out for the best.

ok.. good luck to all of you who are still waiting.. NO MORE WAIT FOR ME!! yay!!
i'm still in U of Rochester waitlist, but i think i'm just going to go to RWJMS.. Rochester is DANG cold~!!!
