I get the feeling Duke is really stingy with their interviews. I guess that can be a good thing in a way, since if you do get one you know it means something...Congrats on your first invite quant!
Don't worry. Last year, Duke took their sweet time in inviting the folks last year, including myself, an interview. Don't give up hope.

Does anyone know the scoop on Duke? My chairman was not very complimentary of their program, to put it mildly. He said they have had problems the past 5-10 years. He mentioned that their pathology program was not as strong as the other programs there and other programs in NC were more respected. I was kinda surprised and I wonder if anyone has heard similar things.

I've heard two things about Duke (not necessarily suggesting that the program is bad):

1. Duke has the best PA school in the country. Great PA support as a result but you may not be grossing a lot of specimens. But if you don't like grossing, this place is for you! Your hours are very reasonable if you don't have to gross much.

2. Duke and UNC are in close proximity. So cases in the Raleigh-Durham area get divided between the two pathology departments. So the specimen volume and variety may suffer at each of the two programs. There was a discussion in last year's interview thread about how UNC's specimen volume was not too high and there was concern expressed about the learning opportunities. I have no idea what the specimen volume at Duke is like.

As for departmental shakeups at Duke, I'm out of the loop. I have no idea what the issues in that department are.

Ok. I can't let that go without... War Eagle!!
But yes, UT "sux Arse".

Good one. See you guys in November. We owe you one this year. It has been too long since we have beat you guys. I think it might actually be a close one this year.

I'm seriously lookng at UNC and Duke and so I've thought about Andy's second point before. It makes sense and it's something I'll ask about during my UNC interview (and at Duke as well if they interview me!). However, I tend to think it's not much of an issue - I mean think about it, there are five major pathology programs in NYC! Granted, NYC has a lot more volume than Raleigh-Durham but I really think both programs are strong and there are enough specimens to go around. I may be biased because I also think that the research triangle would an awesome place to live. But as far as departmental issues at Duke I have not heard anything but I'm certainly not in the know there either...Anyone with info please come forward!

UNC has a direct plug with the medical examiner's office, for example. So Duke residents do some "away" rotations in the context of UNC to get forensics experience. Perhaps there are rotations that UNC residents would do at Duke. Regardless of where the specimens end up, they're still there. So there's probably some sharing that goes on to make up for deficiencies at respective institutions...it would make sense. But just for your edification, I'd ask about the potential weak spots at each of the two institutions and what they do to try to remedy it. It's a fair question.

East Carolina and Duke by email. 👍

Rejection from Johns Hopkins, but at least I heard SOMETHING!

rejection - hopkins....did expect that.....goodluck everyone....

Just got me invite from UTSW!! I'm soo excited. I've heard its a great place, cool residents, the workload is not too demanding and the city is pretty happening and the cost of living is reasonable. Also I agree you cant beat the research!!!! Hopefully I can nail my interview!!

I don't know much about UTSW path, but UTSW has a really strong research program. That is what attracted me. Also, there is a pretty big Iowa - UTSW connection. I'm not sure why, but many faculty members here trained at UTSW so I've heard a lot of positive things about it. Also I have met with some folks from UTSW when they came here to give talks.

Congrats on your interview! 👍

You'll nail it--congrats! 👍

Congrats on the UTSW invite! How did the program contact you (email, phone, snail mail, etc)?

Dallas is a great city, I think you'll 😍 it there!

I remember ChipLeader said he got a phone call from them, but my answering machine at home is on the fritz so I am freaking out. 😳

Duke today via email. 🙂

Also, UTSW was by phone initially but they did send an email afterwards...so don't sweat it.

Phone Call then email.

U of Chicago by email.

My husband also got an invite from U of Chicago (maybe you'll be working together next year 😉 ) but hasn't been able to set up the interview. One e-mail to the residency program coordinator as directed and one voicemail, but no reply. Have you had better luck?

I actually haven't even replied yet. 😳

I will very soon though! Hopefully we are able to get through!

UTSW by phone call--I'm really excited about this one! I was at the gym when the call came (he left a message), but they say they'll send an e-mail tomorrow. Too bad, because I would have liked to have talked to him!

Good luck everyone!

My parents just told me that they are coming to visit this weekend. I love seeing them but my house is a disaster area.

Edit: Sorry, I meant to put this in the random thread. 😳

Emory today by email. UAB yesterday by email.
These are my first interview offers. Finally, things are rolling along a little bit!
It seemed like programs were never going to start reviewing my application.

Congrats quant. Told ya those interviews would be coming.

Congrats beary...Columbia is a good program for MD/PhD's like yourself.

Congrats to the rest of you for securing some good interviews. Hope the next several weeks bring you more fortune.

Hooray, quant!! 🙂

Did my PSF there, have posted a lot previously - you could probably do a search. It's a good program with some good faculty, although one of the best recently left for a position in NYC. It's a great place for a motivated resident - you can coast if you want, but they really will respond well to someone who expresses enthusiasm. Lots of good diagnosticians as well.

Thank you guys,
I wish i had as much faith Andy!... 🙂
But yeah, my mind is at ease, and im enjoying the conference where i am at right now much more.... 😀 😀
Yaah thanks for the info....but i was wondering how the research was up there, Is there any resident research, how receptive are the faculty to the idea of research?

Probably you posted this stuff already, im going to do a search on the PSF stuff anyway...

They have a good research program, the residency has not in the past been too focused on research but I know there are some residents who do. As I said, it's kind of user-driven. They won't push it but they will encourage it. The chair of the department is an immunopathologist and there is some vascular work there as well.

like andy predicted..when it rains, it pours!! 😀
congrats quant,beary,bamaalum,chipleader.. 👍
thinking of starting a "1 guinness per call on sdn" spree..so much beer,so little time..

I've been out of town, so I've been a little delinquent with my interview updates:

Hopkins
Cleveland Clinic
UNC
Vandy
Iowa
Emory
BWH
UPENN

Anybody know anything about U of South Dakota? I kind of randomly added it to my application list and got an invite to interview. Might be too small/rural for my liking, but on the other hand it is the only program in the Dakotas and may get most of the interesting specimens in those states... Any thoughts?

Congrats on all your great interviews Cameron! I uploaded my stuff on Sept. 1 and Penn is the only one that still hasn't downloaded anything.

Hmm, that's kind of weird. Penn was pretty good downloading my stuff. On the other hand, Michigan and Wake Forest have been kind of delinquent. It would be nice if I could schedule my Michigan interview the same week that I go to Cleveland, and my Wake interview the week I go to UNC. Oh well. I've scheduled quite a bit of vacation time this winter to go to interviews, so I guess it doesn't matter too much.

There is beer here.
As there is in most places where there are people... 😉 But I suppose that was your point.

See Andy? I'm not the only one who associates your name with beer! 😛

On a separate note, I was talking to one of our co-chiefs today... she was saying that they had only tried out the pre-interview dinner idea for the first time last year. Will definitely be doing them again this year!

For what it's worth, I volunteered 😀

Sure. Congrats to those who have been invited here for an interview. At the end of your day, ask Margarita to take you to residents room and we can chat. We can go out for a beer (or two or three) of course (assuming that I don't get killed with complex specimens like I did today).

Oh BTW, you DO get evaluated during lunch. Don't let your guard down. I learned this recently.

During my interview lunch, I didn't know this. Somehow I still made it in.

I got invites from Cleveland and Emory today. I'm a mess -- mixture of excitement and intimidation. I'm looking forward to the next day to see what it will bring. Man, I would be enjoying myself this weekend if it wasn't for the piling workload at my probably number one visiting elective. I love it though. Bring it on!
