Don't worry. Last year, Duke took their sweet time in inviting the folks last year, including myself, an interview. Don't give up hope.ChipLeader said:I get the feeling Duke is really stingy with their interviews. I guess that can be a good thing in a way, since if you do get one you know it means something...Congrats on your first invite quant!
I've heard two things about Duke (not necessarily suggesting that the program is bad):drPLUM said:Does anyone know the scoop on Duke? My chairman was not very complimentary of their program, to put it mildly. He said they have had problems the past 5-10 years. He mentioned that their pathology program was not as strong as the other programs there and other programs in NC were more respected. I was kinda surprised and I wonder if anyone has heard similar things.
drPLUM said:Ok. I can't let that go without... War Eagle!!
But yes, UT "sux Arse".
AndyMilonakis said:I've heard two things about Duke (not necessarily suggesting that the program is bad):
1. Duke has the best PA school in the country. Great PA support as a result but you may not be grossing a lot of specimens. But if you don't like grossing, this place is for you! Your hours are very reasonable if you don't have to gross much.
2. Duke and UNC are in close proximity. So cases in the Raleigh-Durham area get divided between the two pathology departments. So the specimen volume and variety may suffer at each of the two programs. There was a discussion in last year's interview thread about how UNC's specimen volume was not too high and there was concern expressed about the learning opportunities. I have no idea what the specimen volume at Duke is like.
As for departmental shakeups at Duke, I'm out of the loop. I have no idea what the issues in that department are.
UNC has a direct plug with the medical examiner's office, for example. So Duke residents do some "away" rotations in the context of UNC to get forensics experience. Perhaps there are rotations that UNC residents would do at Duke. Regardless of where the specimens end up, they're still there. So there's probably some sharing that goes on to make up for deficiencies at respective institutions...it would make sense. But just for your edification, I'd ask about the potential weak spots at each of the two institutions and what they do to try to remedy it. It's a fair question.ChipLeader said:I'm seriously lookng at UNC and Duke and so I've thought about Andy's second point before. It makes sense and it's something I'll ask about during my UNC interview (and at Duke as well if they interview me!). However, I tend to think it's not much of an issue...
beary said:I don't know much about UTSW path, but UTSW has a really strong research program. That is what attracted me. Also, there is a pretty big Iowa - UTSW connection. I'm not sure why, but many faculty members here trained at UTSW so I've heard a lot of positive things about it. Also I have met with some folks from UTSW when they came here to give talks.
Congrats on your interview! 👍
path2006 said:Just got me invite from UTSW!! I'm soo excited. I've heard its a great place, cool residents, the workload is not too demanding and the city is pretty happening and the cost of living is reasonable. Also I agree you cant beat the research!!!! Hopefully I can nail my interview!!
Clair de Lune said:Congrats on the UTSW invite! How did the program contact you (email, phone, snail mail, etc)?
ChipLeader said:Duke today via email. 🙂
Also, UTSW was by phone initially but they did send an email afterwards...so don't sweat it.
right!something is better than nothing..atleast it gives you the impression things are happening..Brian Pavlovitz said:Rejection from Johns Hopkins, but at least I heard SOMETHING!
beary said:U of Chicago by email.
mudbug said:My husband also got an invite from U of Chicago (maybe you'll be working together next year 😉 ) but hasn't been able to set up the interview. One e-mail to the residency program coordinator as directed and one voicemail, but no reply. Have you had better luck?

AndyMilonakis said:Congrats quant. Told ya those interviews would be coming.
Congrats beary...Columbia is a good program for MD/PhD's like yourself.
Congrats to the rest of you for securing some good interviews. Hope the next several weeks bring you more fortune.

beary said:Congrats on all your great interviews Cameron! I uploaded my stuff on Sept. 1 and Penn is the only one that still hasn't downloaded anything.

As there is in most places where there are people... 😉 But I suppose that was your point.yaah said:There is beer here.
Sure. Congrats to those who have been invited here for an interview. At the end of your day, ask Margarita to take you to residents room and we can chat. We can go out for a beer (or two or three) of course (assuming that I don't get killed with complex specimens like I did today).ChipLeader said:Hey Andy, you takin' all of us going to BWH out for beers after our interviews or what? 😀
