It's for those IMG's who wish to have licensure in California. In order to qualify, any electives taken during the fourth year must be at an institution that has an ACGME-accredited residency program in that specialty. In addition, a Family Practice clerkship MUST be performed (for those graduating after 1998 who did not complete a clerkship in Family Practice, one must be done in order to qualify). You have to have passed USMLE steps 1 and 2 in order to qualify, I believe. Here's the Medical Board of California's website:
www.medbd.ca.gov/

Hope this helps!

What a stupid rule. Who thinks of these things?

It seems like medical education is just coming up with more and more stupid rules and hoops to jump through. Step II CS being an obvious example of this.

UNC yesterday by snail mail. They even put you up for a night! 🙂

One thing they did right: US students who went to "foreign" schools (such as St. George's 😉 ) used to have to take the clinical skills assessment exam IN ADDITION TO the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam!!  Thank goodness they did away with it. I guess they figure the Step 2 CS is so useful, why not test English proficiency as well. :meanie:

Question for those who have gone before: How late do interview days tend to run? I want to snatch up some cheap airfares but I want to make sure I don't book a flight that leaves too early on the interview day. I suppose it varies somewhat from program to program but I'm figuring/hoping the days end by 2-3pm so I can catch ~5pm flight home...Too optimistic? I'd like to avoid staying that extra night after the interview if I can, as this is getting hella expensive already!

Well here's the thing. Your interviews aren't just interviews. They will plan for you to go to a conference...so that's one hour. Then you have lunch with residents which runs for anywhere from 1-2 hours...the longer the better because you can ask a lot of questions. However, be cognizant of the fact that during lunch, you will most likely be evaluated.

My shortest interview days were at Michigan and UNC. Both went from like 8 am to 2 pm. I've never been on an interview visit shorter than that. My longest interview went from 8 am to like 6 pm. So after my UNC interview, I was able to catch a 6 pm flight out the same day. The thing is you gotta watch out for rush hour traffic which may screw you over. So, you're kinda walking the tightrope here.

I found it very difficult to schedule two interview on back to back days if it required a flight between the two interviews. The best way to pull this off is if you have two interviews in the same city (like NYC, Boston, Bay Area, Tobacco Road). So try to cluster interviews geographically if you can and that should cut down on costs. Unfortunately, programs don't always cooperate with your plans.

9-2pm.

owned. 😛

Andy's right though, it varies a lot and you need to plan for all day. The earliest I had to show up was either 7 or 7:30. One place I interviewed with 8 people. Not all places include a conference to go to. Generally you start the day with the program director, and also end the day with the program director.

If it is an unavoidable circumstance you may be able to contact them well ahead of time and ask if you can be done by 2-3pm, but I wouldn't necessarily plan on it. I don't recall having any days end at 6pm but some went past 5.

Oh yeah, when out to lunch, order what you want. I got really annoyed with myself for not ordering a soda to drink because everyone else had ordered water. A few residents i know have discussed it and it behooves you to show some cojones when ordering.

Brown this A.M. by e-mail. Anyone have any thoughts about this program?

I remember taking MSTP interviewees out for informal lunch Q&A sessions.. 90% of the time they would order salads and water, while my shameless cohorts and I would often order 2 entrees, 2 desserts and take all the leftovers home, all on the departmental nickel. Good times.

I think applicants for MSTP and residency do this because they're nervous and probably not all too hungry. Plus, the last thing you need is to get some big ass messy meal, spill **** on your suit, and then show up to your post-lunch interview in a state of post-prandial grogginess.

Oh yeah, getting a soda during lunch is fine. Beer is righto ut though. I learned this the hard way...it was one of at least 3 reasons why I was rejected by Hopkins MSTP 2 days after I interviewed there. Good times.

My longest interview visit ended at 7 pm and that was at MGH. Eat that bitch! 😛

Lemme guess...the interview where you were with many other people was MGH...I interviewed with two others and we were told that there can be days where the number of interviewees on a given day can easily exceed that.

I was so nervous on my MSTP interviews that I didn't want to eat at all - I just tried to choke some stuff down so I didn't look too nervous to eat!

Hi everybody-
I've been reading this forum for a while, but now I am getting so nervous that I decided to register and write something just to keep myself busy 🙂 I am an IMG with scores 97/99 and some pathology experience in my home country. Got 2 interviews so far- Emory and New Mexico. It was 10 days ago... after that.. SILENCE :scared: Please please tell me I have a chance, I don't want to work in McDonalds for a year 🙁

Welcome, Irena!

It's still very early yet (at least, I keep telling myself that--NO invites so far)!
It sounds like you are a pretty competitive applicant, so I doubt you'll be working at McDonald's.

Keep us posted on the other invites you receive--did you apply anywhere on the East Coast?

Thanks Andy and Yaah, that helps...Dude, I hope none of my interviews run until 7pm, but I guess if it was hahvud I woudn't complain. Looks like my worst nightmare is coming true: I am going be be forced to fly Southwest much more than I hoped. They need to start assigning seats goddamit. But they are way less expensive than the others, and the cheap bastard in me can't resist. Anyway time for MNF, my money's on KC.

Yeah, cuz Tennessee sux Arse!! Roll Tide!!

Did I say KC was gonna win? Umm I meant Denver...Make that two blowouts...Oh well, at least there's a new episode of Laguna Beach tonight!

They need to start assigning seats goddamit.

Why? That would take away the many fun games you can play with neurotic southwest passengers.

1. Arrive super early and get in line immediately. Count how long it takes people to get in line behind you. You can have a preset number and bet yourself or a friend. Loser buys overpriced airport beer. Even more fun is, just before they announce boarding, get out of line and go to the back of it. Everyone will think you are insane.

2. Casually watch and wait while everyone lines up. Take a mental image of the first few people in line (good enough to recognize them again). Then be the last person on the plane. Sit RIGHT next to these people, which completely negates them having waited in line. If you can have a seat in which you repeatedly climb over them to pee that's even better. (Sorry, sir, I have cystitis 😀 )

This is why southwest is the greatest airline ever. No other airline allows you to play mind games like this.

Not anymore. Vols are within 10 and they have 2nd and goal now.

Yeah, they still suck. 😡
They don't suck as bad as my team...quit yer bitchin.

Man, that has to be one of the best comebacks I've ever seen.

Those LSU fans looked like they were gonna jump off the nearest bridge. Gotta feel for 'em. Great game though. Yeah UMich sucks this year. Carr must go.

UT Southwestern by phone and Vanderbilt by email.

Vanderbilt says they won't review my application until they have my PHOTO! What's up with that? Guess they want to make sure I'm not too crazy looking before they will consider me. Can I upload it myself? The student affairs office is killin' me here 🙁

Yeah, I got that same message. It seems rather silly to me seeing as they aren't allowed to view the photos before they offer you an interview!
Oh, well.... I mailed my photo to my med school today. Hopefully it won't take long to be uploaded. Of course I am also waiting on my 3rd LOR to come in before they will review my app!

I get the feeling Duke is really stingy with their interviews. I guess that can be a good thing in a way, since if you do get one you know it means something...Congrats on your first invite quant!

Hey beary - Hopefully yours is on the way...Just wondering though, what about UTSW makes it one of your top choices? Do you have any personal knowledge of the program? In any case I know UTSW has a solid reputation and I have a feeling I'm gonna like the program alot...

I don't know much about UTSW path, but UTSW has a really strong research program. That is what attracted me. Also, there is a pretty big Iowa - UTSW connection. I'm not sure why, but many faculty members here trained at UTSW so I've heard a lot of positive things about it. Also I have met with some folks from UTSW when they came here to give talks.

Congrats on your interview! 👍
