Hello everybody! I am another foreign graduate trying my luck for Pathology this year. I have a few interviews, one of them is at University of Mississippi. They want me to come early for the interview, and I assume might offer a prematch. I don't know anything about the Program except what is on their official website. I don't know if I should go for a prematch with them if offered. Other interviews are at Drexel University,PA; Baptist Health System Program, Birmingham, Alabama and Hartfort Hospital , Connecticut. I will interview at Drexel and Hartfort in December, and in Alabama in January. If someone would please give me some information about University of Mississippi in relation to other programs I'd greatly appreciate it. It is so hard to make a lifechanging decision so early in the game! Thank you again!

Lilit I understand your feeling. Being an IMG I think I would be happy to accept a prematch if offered one by a program not on probation, because many of us cannot afford to lose, too many things are at stake. But what if there are chances with other "better" places? The programs you mentioned seem to be community programs and relatively small univ programs that are no much different from U Mississippi. But I really don't know anything about them. Have you considered location? And maybe you can worry about this after they actually give your prematch offer? If they do ask them to give you 24-48 hours to consider. Or, you can say like this "I really like your program but I have already scheduled other interviews and I feel obligated to pay them a visit. So can you give me a couple of weeks?" (quoted from Iserson's guide)

UMass interview scheduled. Don't know anything about this program but have a few friends at Worcester who told me it's a good place. Although I'd rather stay in Texas.

Happy Panda, thank you very much for your reply. I still have time to reschedule U of Mississippi interview for an earlier date ( so far scheduled it for January). I'll think about it. Hopefully some better offers will come along.

Hang in there everyone. The invites are coming out VERY slowly. I know my words aren't going to comfort as much as getting an invitation.

Congrats to everyone who has received an invite. I'll see everyone on the interview trail!

Keep the faith if you don't have an interview yet...I guess it's easier to say when you do have interviews, but it really seems like there is a LOT of activity yet to come as far as interview invitations go so it's far from panic time. I have yet to hear from a bunch of schools as well. Good luck...

GW by email today

UT-Houston by email yesterday. Still waiting to hear from my #1 choice though...

I also heard from UT-Houston by email yesterday.

Sinai by email today.

University of Pittsburgh by e-mail today, however I have conflicts with all of their interview dates 👎

That sucks! If your conflicts are other interviews, can you move some of those around? Or tell Pitt to be more flexible? :meanie:

A couple of them are other interviews and a couple are med school rotations where I am already missing time for interviews. They are pretty strict about getting time off here for interviews... annoyingly so.

Anyway, what it comes down to is that I already have 8 interviews set up and I am still waiting to hear from at least 3 more places that I really want to interview at (UVa, Colorado, and Dartmouth). I don't know if I should really push to find a date to interview at Pittsburgh. I hate to rearrange the interviews I have already confirmed. I guess I really don't know too much about the program, and can't find much searching this forum. If any of you have any knowledge about the program that you'd be willing to share, please PM me... it might help me make a decision about interviewing there.

Thanks, and congrats to everyone with invites!

My school is really strict too. I do not understand this. We got a big talk from the Dean about how if absolutely had to miss some time from rotations to interview, we had to apologize to everybody, since that makes it look like interviews are more important than rotations.

I wanted to raise my hand and point out that interviews for our entire future are more important than a few days of some M4 rotation.

Ah. 'Tis perhaps why the secretary looked a little panicked this morning.

Michigan today for me too. Also got an invite from Brigham and Women's today.
That makes for a pretty good day in my book. 🙂

Also, I'm curious about where everyone is going to be interviewing (maybe we'll meet somewhere along the way). Since the thread is getting so long (and hard to look back through) I was wondering if, when you post a new invite, people could summarize where they'll be going at the end of the post. This will also help people to see who has given out interviews so far.
For example...

UNC Emory BWH
UAB Michigan

Not to be a downer, but:

Rejection #2: Dartmouth! Too bad--I would have liked to interview there.

Oh well. Programs 2, Brian 0

BRING IT ON!!! :meanie:

Oh,Brian!Brave Brian!!
today has been a really up and down day..
attended my first day at the path rotation..was mostly in surg path..it was a blast!!i can SO picture myself doing such work for the rest of my life! i am sooo glad i applied to path only, and not hedged my bets in other residencies!
also, i got through on my CS, and am now eligible for ECFMG Certification..AND got my drivers license in the mail!that ought to count for something!! 😀
on the flip side, got rejects from Cornell and Sinai. in Brian's words:
Programs 3, Uhoh! 0 🙄
but i won't let such news ruin what looks to be a terrific month in the offing..like someone wiser than me said "Looking, Not Back, But Forward..."
brian, i'll willingly take you up on a drink or two,or maybe a few kegs! 😉 sorry about cigars though..i am in the middle of a long overdue, and moderately successful smoking cessation.wish i had chosen another time!! :meanie:

A nay from dartmouth here too...........

Sorry to hear that Brian. Things will pick up for you though. I often wonder if there is rhyme or reason to this process.

Keep that chin up, Brian. I'm positive something good will come out of this scare. You'll be right there come PGY-1 with the rest of us, nodding our heads and pretending we see what the attending is talking about. 🙂

Congratulations to those who got excellent calls! And carry on, Brian. I believe many programs have not started to review our applications yet. Those that already started will continue to do so for many more days. 90% of my programs haven't given me any feedback.

We got a big talk from the Dean about how if absolutely had to miss some time from rotations to interview, we had to apologize to everybody, since that makes it look like interviews are more important than rotations.

Um, having been through the process last year, I can say with absolute certainty that INTERVIEWS ARE WAY MORE FRICKING IMPORTANT!!!!!

For the deans and educational persons who say otherwise, they are completely full of poo. What are you going to learn now that you are not going to forget by the time you start your residency? Absolutely fricking nothing. You will have a gap from the end of march (match) to july 1st or so where you will have no responsibilities other than moving to your program and looking presentable at graduation. Any useful information will leave your head by then. I had mandatory rotations that were clinical medicine and they kept trying to get me involved. "But Pingu, this will really help you next year as an intern" Pingu: "I'm going into pathology so unless you are going to cut off this diabetics toe and give it to me to gross, I have no interest"

Really people, cut the 4th years a break. Anyone who pimps a 4th year medical student should be slapped with an unfixed colon. You have a GINORMOUS decision to make (or be made for you) and you should not be encumbered with the trivalness of 4th year rotations. It's bad enough y'all have to take step 2 cs.

Oh and if they are giving you trouble about taking days off or you are going to a place and wish to stay the weekend...always play the broke medical student. "But if i fly during the week, its 700 dollars but if i stay the weekend or stay over a saturday its only 250. And I just had to buy a suit and shoes because me others won't fit and aren't appropriate and i just paid over a grand for step 2 cs." People feel bad for the poor. :meanie:

What, did she actually mean to send out rejections today? Just great.

OK whoever said that their Dean told their students to be apologetic when scheduling interviews during rotations is a total f*cking prick and deserves to be castrated and fed his own shriveled testicles! That way, when he sh*ts, he sh*ts on his balls.

Sorry to hear about the nays, guys... hang in there! Maybe consider adding some programs.

If here is anything to go by, our PD got back and now the program secretary is away until next Monday (calm before the storm, I guess). As usual the anxiety is all on the part of the applicants!

We have 4 spots this year, btw.

On another note, I found out today that my cover is totally blown 😉

I was talking to an M4 applying to path this evening, and I told her she should check out SDN.
And whaddaya know but she goes "hey, that was what one of your 2nd year residents told me too!"

Lurker! 😛

Thanks for all the support and kind words, friends!

uhoh!: no smoking for me, either! 😉

I have no doubt that things will end up working out; they always do, don't they?

Off to look at more skin!

Washington U
Saint Louis U

Both came today. Finally. Now I get to wait for my other 8...

Maryland by phone.

Things are starting to trickle in a little faster.

UCSF, UPMC, Cornell, and Brigham. So, do I get to meet the great Andy Milonakis? 🙂

Depends on if our schedules overlap. I have no idea when interviews start (anyone care to share?) here. I guess I could ask the chief but I'm not particularly motivated to ask  Actually, I think I might have asked him last friday at the bar but I got drunk and forgot.

I do know that there is going to be a signup sheet that will go around where residents can sign up to take interviewees out to lunch. The signup sheet doesn't list interviewees' names, but it does state which school the interviewee is coming from. I'll plan to sign up for some lunches so if our paths meet and I sign up for a date on which you happen to be here, we'll meet.

When you come here, you will likely to be interviewing with at least one person...when I interviewed here last January, I interviewed with one other person. One fellow and one first-year resident took us out to lunch. Also feel free to ask Margarita to show you to the residents' room after your interviews so that you can shoot the **** with more residents. I did this and I was glad I did.

I highly encourage you to talk to as many residents as possible (time permitting...if you have to leave early or catch a flight, that's cool ya know). There is a good balance of clinical-oriented folks and lab-oriented folks here. It's not the Brigham of the Cotran era where almost everyone was lab-bound. We can tell you the pros and cons of the program from our respective perspectives...different people rave and bitch about different things.

Anyways, some monkey on this forum asked if I'd take people out for a beer. Well, since I am nice man with happy feelings all of the time (quote?), I'm always willing to take people to a neutral site (i.e., some bar I guess) to give more information about our program over a beer (if you drink, I'll buy you some brew...if you don't, I'll buy you a Zima or a Coke). Hell, you're day at Brigham is gonna last all day so you'll probably be sick of being in a hospital at the end of the day.

Again, as I said in a previous post, you WILL be evaluated during lunch. I did NOT know this. In fact, I was under the impression that we were not being evaluated during lunch. I found out to the contrary when I found out that the girl who interviewed with me got dinged cuz she told some story about how she puked during her first autopsy...this is according to the guy who took us out to lunch. In his words, that was "poor form." Why do I care? F*ck if I know if she said that...**** I don't even remember the conversation except for the fact that she did most of the talking. But anyways, there ya have it.

That's why I'm kinda hesitant to even go out to these lunches...I think you and I will engage in a more frank, informative conversation with each other in a situation when you are NOT being evaluated. If we talk after your interview day is over...everything that contributes to your interview "score" is all set in stone already. You're done. So you can breathe a sigh of relief and we can have a more elaborate conversation. Even if you impress me by doing a kegstand, I can't increase your interview "score."

CONGRATS TO ALL OF YOU ON YOUR INTERVIEWS!
To the rest of you who are still waiting, no need to panic. It's still early October.

Hello everybody!! Yesterday I sent all my paperwork to eras to be scanned! I'm sooo exited...I know I know that everybody sent their paperwork already....but being in a OB/GYN residency I was having a hard time to find time to ask for letters,etc....anyways were can I check if my LOR's have been scanned? I just can't wait to know..jeje
It will be fun if I meet any of you guys/girls in the inetrview... I
Do you think is better to wait till all papers are scanned and than applied to the programs or should I apply already?

Thank guys/girls, my best wishes to everybody,
prometheo

Hi prometheo,

Congrats on getting your paperwork in! On ERAS there is a section called ADTS where you can check which documents have been uploaded to ERAS and then which programs have downloaded them. I would recommend applying now because programs will check ERAS repeatedly and download additional letters as they become available.

For those of you waiting on programs that have already sent out invites:
At the end of October last year, I emailed U Wash and UNC, because other people had already heard and because there was word that interview spots were filling up and got invites for both.
Additionally, Dr. Treseler at UCSF told me that they couldn't send out invites to all the people who were qualified, so some people don't get rejected but don't get invites either. The idea being that if you're one of those people, you can always email and have a pretty good chance of landing an interview just based on your interest.
Hope this helps someone!
Good luck to all applying this year!

Last night, UT-SW and U Kansas
