Interviews at Loma Linda

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for all the helpful posts guys. Call me ignorant, but what is a letter of intent? I interviewed back in November and I haven't had any contact with the school. Should I just sit tight and wait patiently but I don't want them to interpret that as me not being interested. I, on the other hand, don't want to call and pester them when I really don't have any thing I need to ask. I guess my question is: Is there anything you can do to let the school know you are still interested? Everyone keep posting on how things are going for you. I know everyone will want to celebrate with you.

Anyways...I don't think it will pester them if you call. I mean, what harm can it do? 🙂 At first, I thought I would be bothering them also, but it's my future, darn it, and i really want to to go LLU, so I will do anything possible to get information from them and to let them know that I am very much intersted. I think that taking the pro-active approach to this thing can't hurt that much, maybe it will even help. If I were you, I'd just let them know what you've been up to. I've been pretty lazy about an update letter, though.

Also, a letter of intent is a letter that tells the admissions committee that their school is your first choice school, and if accepted, you will definitely attend.

I hope that helps paceac! Hopefully we'll hear from them soon! :luck: :luck:

I secondthe thought that their adcom meets only once a month. UCLAStudent, when did your friends get accepted? If their letter was dated January 19th like mine then I would guess so. Only two more weeks and there will be another one. Hang tight everyone. I can not wait for some class mates to chat with I am all alone on SDN for now :scared:

Definately!

Does anyone know what percentage of the class has been filled as of now, and how many interviews are usually conducted? 🙂

arierty, I am not sure when their letters were dated. They were accepted around a week before I posted my original message about them.

Hey,

Does anyone know current or past LLU students who have recieved scholarships or grants? I am kind of concerned about taking out loans for the whole thing. LLU is really expensive. That seems to be the major draw back I have of going there. Please post if you hear about any scholarships. Thx.

I know a guy who is a second year at Loma Linda. He did well on the MCAT and had great grades. He said it is almost impossible to get financial aid there and to just count on taking out lots of loans. I'm sure there are some scholarships but that was his experience.

I know there are some scholarships that are listed on their site. When I have time, I'll look for it for you and give you the link. 🙂

Hey angelinebear let me know if you find anything. i tried looking, but the only thing I found was the summer research project, but it's more like a job than a scholarship! Not that I have a problem with working too 🙂

Hey arierty. Sorry it took me so long, but I looked on their site and what I thought were scholarships are actually just awards, mostly for seniors. I'm still searching for you, though, and I'll let you know if something comes up 🙂

Also, I'm going write my letter of intent this weekend. Has anyone in here written a letter of intent before? What goes into it? What's the format? Also, I have a feeling that Dr Nyiradi might think I'm a little too young to be in med school, but since a young age, I was forced to mature quicker than others my age, and I have experienced many things that others twice my age cannot attest to. Granted, people twice my age have experienced things that I cannot attest to, as well. Should I hint at this, or should I just keep the letter to the normal "this is my number one and I will attend if given the opportunity" bit...and then list reasons why I like the school?

Bumpity...bumpity...BUMP! 😳

This is probably a dumb question but I'm not afraid to ask those questions. What does "bump" mean? Maybe I just don't spend enough time on this website.

Angelinebear: how old are you. I do not think LLU is concerned with people's age. Besides, they don't know your age even! I am only 21. I would leave all of that out. I do not really know what to put in a letter of intent though, sorry.

haha...I just turned 21, but I'm graduating college in 3 years for personal, very legit reasons. I hope they understand that. 🙁

oh yeah...to paceac....when you "bump" you bring the post up to the first page, so that it doesn't get lost in the sea of other posts on SDN

BUMP!

I take it noone's heard a peep from the adcom recently. If so, keep the updates coming, guys! 🙂

The only news I've heard from Loma Linda is from their financial aid department. I received a letter with a pin number so I could go online and fill stuff out. I'm pretty sure I received this letter because they received my FAFSA information.

Has anyone ever heard of Dr. Nyirady personally calling an applicant post-interview/ pre-decision because he wanted to clear some things up about their application? For example, they didn't finish their pre-recs and he wanted to know when that would be taken care of and what classes they were taking this semester. Has anyone heard of any school, not just LLU, doing this? If so, what happened?

I am getting very anxious, and it has not had a very good impact on my sleep patterns. I have been very very tired lately. Maybe it's senioritis 😴 👎

Angelinebear- Did you get a call from Dr. Nyirady? I haven't ever heard of that happening at Loma Linda but I have heard of the dean calling applicants at other schools to clarify information on the application.

When you interviewed did anybody mention how long it might take to hear something? How long ago did you interview? No, one gave me any sort of idea when I should expect to hear something. In fact the last person who interviewed me as I was leaving told me he wasn't on the admissions committee and had no idea when I should expect to hear something. I know this waiting game is tough but try not to lose any sleep in the process. Being tired always makes everything worse. You've done all that you are suppose to do and the ball is in their court now.

Hey Paceac,
Yeah. Dr. Nyirady called me last thursday. Actually, I think he called my home phone that wednesday, but my parents didn't answer the phone. My parents just told me yesterday that LLU called because they saw it on the caller ID. Anways, he called my cell phone on Thursday and said that he was looking at my file and that he noticed that I didn't take the last physics and last chem yet. I told him that I was finishing up this semester, and he told me to email him my classes. He just said that he wanted to clear that up. Do you the outcomes of the people from other schools that recieved calls like that?

Concerning the question about when we should expect to hear something, I actually did not interview with a group, so I really don't know. I'm thinking that they meet once a month. If so, they should be meeting soon, within the next two weeks. But i'm trying not to be too expectant, ya know. :scared: Who did you interview with? I interviewed Jan. 13, by the way.

I guess you're right about the ball being in their court. Trust in God, and everything will turn out the way they are supposed to 🙂

I don't know any people personally that have been called by the dean post-interview but I've just heard of it occurring. Sorry, I don't know any of those outcomes. I interviewed late November with Clifford Herrmann who I believe teaches at the dental school and then Robert Teel who teaches physiology. This past summer I stopped by the school to check it out and met with Dr. Nyirady for a little while.

angelinebear, that phone call does not seem like a bad thing to me. Actually, it might be a good sign (meaning that LLU wants to make sure that you plan on finishing the requirements BEFORE they accept you). Good luck!

Cool paceac! I interviewed with Dr. Teel also! I liked him. I think that he, along with my other interviewers, represented the Christian environment of the school very well. I actually got a feel of exactly how much the faculty find a Christian education extremely important. He asked me some of the tougher questions, such as what do you think is a big problem in healthcare, and do you think we could fix it. He was really hospitable, though

Thanks UCLAstudent ...I take it you are planning on attending UCLA, or are you still waiting for other schools?

angelinebear, there are still a few places that I'm waiting to hear from, but right now it's looking like UCLA.

wow! congrats on getting into UCLA, by the way 🙂

keep the news coming, guys...keep everyone that's waiting updated 😀

Angelinebear, Let me be the first to congratulate you. You did a good job. Congratulation for being accepted in Loma Linda Medical School.

I just got a call from Dr. Nyirady...I WILL SEE YOU GUYS AT LOMA LINDA THIS FALL!!!!! God works in absolutely amazing ways. His ways are far more miraculous than anyone can ever dream up!!!! He definitely listens...pray hard, and he hears your prayers 🙂 ..arierty, if you're definitely going to go to Loma Linda, we're going to be classmates! As for everyone else that's waiting to hear, I am sure you will hear very very soon, and we can ALL be classmates! I'll still be on this forum, waiting to congratulate ya'll...especially peaceac and UCLAstudent

"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then you shall call upon me and you shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken to you. And you shall seek me and find me when you shall search for me with all your heart" Jeremiah 29: 11-13 :hardy:

Congratulations, angelinebear! That is so awesome!!! 😀 I know how badly you want to go there.

Thanks! how did you know I got in?...anyways...thanks soooo much! I can't be more excited. My roomate is taking me out tonight for a rootbeer...haha. She was like.."let me buy you a drink....a margarita?.....a ROOTBEER!"....because I don't drink and all 😛

Angelinebear, congratulations!! Sorry, but I do not think I will end up going to Loma Linda unless they have some major scholarships. It is just too expensive to justify 🙁 It is a great school though and you will love it!

Don't worry. Things come when you least expect it. Atleast that's what has been happening with me this whole process. I'm praying for you! 🙂 :luck: :luck: :luck:

AHHHH!!!! AHHH!!! AHHHH-SOME! <-- Like that? haha...Congrats UCLAstudent! are you going to accept or are you still waiting on the other schools? I have a question...Why did my call come last Thursday evening, and apparently people are getting calls on Tuesdays? OH MAN! I'm not going to stop worrying till I get a tangible letter in me hand 😛 I think the adcom is trying to give me a heart attack...the paranoia has returned :scared: haha

Anyone else with good news? :luck:

Thanks, angelinebear! 😀 I really like LLU, but I don't think I will accept the offer for admission. It wouldn't be fair to other applicants.

okay...well I hope that you end up very happy whereever you decide to go, UCLAstudent!

i was accepted too! I'll probably withdraw, though as I got into one of my top choices already.

bump = bring up my post

By the way, I applaud all the SDNers who usually don't let LLU threads go more than three posts before they turn it into SDA bashing for being considerate enough to keep their prejudices at bay.

👍 ...definitely! 🙂

For those of you that have recieved calls this week, can you please let everyone know when you get the official letter? I guess I'm going to sit here paranoid that the call was just a dream or something until I get it something tangible in my hands 🙄 When I talked to Dr. Nyirady last Thursday evening, he said that I should get the letter this week, but no letter yet. I guess there's one more day to wait until I get reacquainted with the nice office staff people a LLU 😛

angelinebear, I got the official letter today (received the call yesterday), but I live very, very close to Loma Linda.

I think I may have made a mistake by not having any contact with the admissions office since I interviewed in November. I thought I would just patiently wait and not bother them but I don't know if this was interpreted as a lack of interest. I called today to ask the status of my application and got the answer I already knew that my "file was being reviewed and they would let me know when a decision was made." I'm going to be writing a letter of intent tomorrow. Is their anything else I can do to let Loma Linda know that is where I want to go?

Congrats to all those who have been accepted so far. Hopefully by God's grace I will be joining you soon.

If Loma Linda is your number 1 choice and you're sure about it, then I would definitely write a letter of intent. If you need help with it, then just PM me. Remember to keep it short and too the point, though. Also, don't be afraid to call them if you have any questions. The office people are really nice and willing to help. I've heard of people setting up meetings with the dean of admissions for their number one once waitlists were sent out (but I'm sure you won't have to resort to that because YOU, paceac, are going to get in! 🙂 )

That's all I can think of as of now. Good luck! :luck:
