Hi everyone,

I just got my rejection letter from LLU today. 🙁 Do you guys think its worth any of my time to ask for an appeal or speak to anyone or do ANYTHING. LLU was my first choice school. depressed....
Sorry, I know what that's like and it's not fun. A phone call wouldn't hurt, and even if they won't reconsider you, they will tell you why and let you know how to improve for next year should you decide to apply again.

Would you mind sharing if/when you interviewed?

My interview was last week of feb. my letter was dated march 16, and just received it yesterday

should letters of intent be sent via email or snail?

I'm sorry to hear the news. If you want to appeal, then I think that sending a ltter via snail mail would be the best route. Good luck with that! :luck:

I agree with angelinebear that you should send the letter via snail mail.

thanks alot guys. i'm so shocked to get a rejection. my 1st interview went so well! she said i was a perfect fit for the school, the exact type of student the school is looking for. it was with a med student, maybe that didnt have too much a weight? the 2nd interview was ok, but not great. he didnt really ask too many questions and just looked at me. Also his pager kept going off. Wondering if that was just a test?

Any advice on the appeal? What to say, etc. I really want to go to LLU so any help/advice would be great.

Yeah...when it comes to interviews, the expected outcome can be very ambiguous. I actually had 3 interviewers (one being a meeting with the associate dean, and the other 2 were with professors). I honestly thought that Dr. Nyirady thought I was too silly...or worse...not ready for med school 😱 But yeah...do you mind if I ask who you interviewed with?

Also, concerning your appeal, I would just be honest. Say what you feel (minus any explicatives, of course 😛 ) . I believe that Californiabound stated earlier that you absolutely have to be specific in your letter. Include names of people who influenced your decision, whether it be professors at Loma Linda, students, or your interviewers, and you should try to make the letter as sincere as possible.

That's all I could think of right now, but I'll come back when I think of anything else. Good luck :luck:

Again, I agree with angelinebear. You should be honest and as specific as possible. I think this is the best way to convey your deep sincerity.

Disappointing news....Got my "we cannot accept you" letter. 🙁

I'm sooo sorry to hear that...do you know what you're going to do? Are you going to appeal or just leave it be? What a bummer. Remember, if you need anything at all PM me or AIM me.

I'm sorry you got disappointing news from Loma Linda.

Does anyone know how LLU's alternate list works, or when they will make it? I heard someone say that it is unranked, whatever that means.

I have no clue how Loma Linda's waitlist works, when it is formed or if it is ranked. I'm wondering the same thing. I interviewed awhile ago and haven't heard anything.

Hi all. Just wondering if any of you know if they're still interviewing at Loma Linda. I completed my secondary in Nov, got notice that my file was complete in mid-Jan and haven't heard from then since. I was figuring that if they're not at all interested in me, by now I should have gotten some reject letter.

Do any of you know if they honor application status checks?

i actually recieved an interview from llu and it's set for mid april.

The interview process really varies. One student from my school interviewed in November and heard by Christmas vacation. My interview was also in November and i heard in February. Another girl at my school just got in around mid march. The way they do the acceptance process is each applicant is given a score. That score comprises your mcat results as well as g.p.a and letters of rec and extracurriculars. Everything is assigned a numerical value and that is tallied. Students with a high score are reviewed first and so on down the list. My advisor said they review about 50-60 students per adcom meeting. They still will interview and accept people around april and may and even into june or july. Usually their aren't many spots at that time. What was said earlier is totally true. They really want to see how badly you want to go to their school. Sending additional letters of intent or rec letters can not hurt! Dr. Nyirady told me that they really want Dr.s that are committed to the practice of Christian medicine and who have the compassion and dedication to be one. Best wishes to all that are still applying and waiting to hear! My prayers are with you! :luck:

Thanks Californiabound for the information. Do you know if LLU lets you know if they have put you on the waitlist or do they only notify you when you are accepted? Do you know how they decide when to reject people. I know some have received rejections already. I hate to bother the admissions office but I'm going to give them a call tomorrow.

One more thing... When you guys call, do you just ask your questions to the admissions person who answers the phone or do you ask to speak with Ms. Edwards or Dr. Nyirady?

I am pretty sure that LLU will let you know if you have been waitlisted...but I'm not 100% on that. They are funny with their admissions process though. When I applied for the first time, they wanted me to retake the MCAT and get a better score. They said they would delay my app till the april MCAT came in, and then make a decision. So they are very much a school that will decide at the last minute. I decided not to opt for that and instead took a year off, which was very beneficial to me. I will see if my advisor knows if they inform people or not! My fingers are crossed for you guys! Just think, four more months! It's going to be the ride of a lifetime! Best of luck! :luck:

I really appreciate your helpfulness. Yeah, I've noticed the admissions process varies a lot from applicant to applicant.

Has anyone heard from LLU lately, either way? It has been 3 months since I interviewed, so I guess the best I can hope for is a wait-list spot.

I was wondering the same thing. I haven't heard of anyone being accepted from the March adcom meeting. It has been over 4 months since I interviewed and, like you said, I think the best I can hope for is a waitlist spot but I will not be complaining if that is the case. Loma Linda has been my #1 choice since day one and I'm running out of ideas to let them know that I'm still interested and would love to attend if given the opportunity.

Wow, 4 months? I guess since they didn't reject us there's still a chance. Maybe they are waiting to see how many people turn down their acceptance, so it's possible we could get in soon. But that's probably just wishful thinking.

I do know for a fact that someone did get in from the March Adcom meeting. I wouldn't give up hope though, they do get lots of turn downs and so are trying to formulate who to waitlist and who to accept. For those that haven't sent a letter of intent, SEND ONE! Also, Dr. Nyirady told us that he likes additional letters of reccomendation. If you have someone who could write you a letter referencing a specific event or situation that this person saw in reference to your character or desire to be a doctor, SEND ONE! His number one point that he kept stressing was that they are looking for people who fit the ideals of what LLU is all about. They want to make sure that you want to be there, and aren't using them as a "safe" school. They aren't going to be offended if you call, At least I don't think so. Lenoa and Dr. Nyirady are the kindest people in the world. I do know that Dr. Nyirday has no voting power on the adcom board, he told me that himself, but he did say that he is the one that presents our case before them and gives his opinion. It would be adventageous then to call or to send a letter of intent. That way when your name comes up, the board might be on the fence and he can say something like "well I know that this person really wants to come here and wants to be the kind of doctor that we hope they will be!" I'm rooting for yu guys...I know how hard it is to keep waiting. If there is anything I can do, let me know. I do have some connections to the school. One of my college professors used to be a student of Dr. Nyirday's way back in the day. Also, my premed advisor had a daughter that went to LLU and so he knows alot of the faculty and staff. Best of luck! :luck:

Hey everyone! I'm beginning the dental school at LLU next fall so I'll probably be seeing some of you on campus next year. There's only 3 or 4 of us in the predental forum going there so the thread's not too exciting. I'm pretty pumped about the move to SoCal!

I am guessing you should hear by the middle to end of this month or maybe in May. I know the adcom meeting general gets together around the 15-17 of every month...not sure if they have it set in stone. I got my acceptance around the 15 or 16 I think. So perhaps if your name comes up in the april adcom meeting you will get a notice, if not you might be hearing my may or even into june. LLU is really good about waiting till the last minute...kinda nice so that everyone has a shot in a sense, but also a pain in the butt because you have to wait so long! 👍 :luck:

LLU isnt as friendly as you say they are. I called Lenoa the other day to ask about my file (I was rejected)..so i was asking if it could have been due to one of my interviews, and then i asked what else i could do (appeal, or what i can do to make my app stronger) I was trying to tell her that my 1st interviewer and i really clicked and connected. Her response, "that's what you think." Well, shoot, the interviewer even told me, and i quote, "you belong at this school. you'[re exactly the type of student we're looking for." So I KNOW we clicked.

Then i asked if i could appeal, and she brushed it off saying, yah sure go ahead and we'll review your file.... in other words, go ahead, we'll just reject you again. Yes, that's exactly the tone she gave me...sounding annoyed and irritated that some poor desperate applicant is fighting to get into the school.

plus, since i really wanted to go to LLU, i called the grad department and asked for info about the postbac certificate program so i could reapply to med school next year....the director of that program was VERY unhelpful and didnt even want to take the time to talk to me.

LLU was one of my top choices, and i would have liked to go there, but it seems like after you're rejected, they're not at all friendly and helpful to you. it's like they dont even want to waste their time with you

Wow! well...sometimes that happens to me too, losinghope, but I'm just thinking that that is the way she talks. I'm sure Lenoa doesn't mean to be...mean, but you know, some people just have that natural tone in their voice, and it's easy to take things they say the wrong way. I would still appeal because Lenoa says that they will review your file again...you get another chance! Who knows, maybe the adcoms will be in a different mood than when they first reviewed application. In addition to your appeal, you should let them know that LLU is your number 1 choice! Best of luck!

and to everyone else...WOW! I've been MIA lately, but this thread is pretty lively, I can't keep up with it anymore 😛

I'm sorry to hear that, losinghope. My experiences with them have been nothing but positive. Good luck next year, and remember, there's Western/COMP right up the road if you don't mind having DO after your name. You could then do a residency at LLU. Just a thought

hi everyone,
i'm an llu hopeful that interviewed early march.... i've gone all out for llu--i sent letters to ms. edwards and dr nyirday (spelling wrong.. ).. i had an additional letter of rec sent in about two weeks about describing me as a good candidate for llu... but still no word. i'm worried--can i do anything else???? WHEN should i expect to hear? is it basically too late (aka i'm on the wait list until forever???). llu is my top and only choice med school... and i've put everything else off because it's the only school i can really see myself at. :scared:
worried and anxious....

I can't think of anything else you can do except wait. Some people have been accepted while others have been rejected and others, like you and me, haven't heard anything. I would imagine that you could hear within the next week or so. The admissions committee seems to meet mid-month so the April adcom would probably be the first adcom that reviews your file. If you are accepted right off the bat you might get a phone call the third week in April. Otherwise you just neurotically sit by the phone and wait for the mailman. Let us know if you hear something. I know the waiting game is tough.

Heard that LLU is starting to send out the rejection letters. One of the guys from our app. pool at school just got his. So out of eight of us:

3 acceptances
1 rejection
1 withdrawl (she didn't have a strong app)
3 waiting to hear

The good news is that if no letter comes soon.....you've been waitlisted...better than rejection. Oh and my advisor said that LLU doesn't inform someone when they have been put on the list. He said they will only send out rejection letters when there is no possible hope. So they hold on to the apps till they are absolutely sure...which is nice but frustrating. My fingers are crossed :luck:

Yeah. We each had an hour with him and that was it. There was no second interview or anything. Just Dr. Nyirady and us! Guess that it's standard protocol to do it that way when you go to an Adventist school. Only people who have to travel to LLU get the two interviews...tour...etc. So now i have a question for those that actually saw the campus. Tell me all about it since i have never seen it (except for pics)! Would love to hear more about the whole campus and what sort of experiences you had!

The campus is great! It really feels like a college campus (as opposed to a school in a big city). You can walk or bike to all of the buildings. The hospital seems fairly new. Lots of housing close by, but I don't think traffic would be too bad if you had to commute.
It's right off of the interstate, fairly close to Ontario airport. Typical CA inland empire climate (hot in the summer, moderate in the winter). I'm surprised you'd choose to go there without even seeing the campus, but you won't be disappointed.

I have been through the Loma Linda area a number of times and have visited the campus both in the summer and late fall. The summer time can get very hot (average highs over 95), it is a desert after all, and the smog can be quite bad if you are not use to it. When I went for my interview in November the air was clear and there was snow on the mountains surrounding Loma Linda. As far as the campus itself, it is very nice. The LLU campus has its own little post office and grocery store and there are older homes around the campus. It felt sort of like an old fashion small town, I don't know how else to describe it. There are big lawns in front of the hospital and around the other campus buildings. The hospital is the most prominent structure in that whole area and can be seen from the main highway a few miles away.

So now i have a question for those that actually saw the campus. Tell me all about it since i have never seen it (except for pics)! Would love to hear more about the whole campus and what sort of experiences you had!

I live nearby. The Inland Empire (the valley in which Loma Linda is situated) is hot in the summer but not humid. Temperatures in high 90's are the norm for summer but actually feel more comfortable than 70s in the midwest with high humidity. No matter how hot it is in the day, it is usually in the 50s or 60s at night. the heat starts at about noon and QUICKLY subsides in the early evening. Winters are another story. 40s to 60s in the day. 30s at night. UGGGGGGGGLY smog galore in the summer but absobloominglutely beautiful in autumn/winter/spring. A ring of mountains encircles Loma Linda. (well almost encirles--leave an opening to get to the beach of course.)

the town of Loma Linda is pretty boring. really not much at all to do. neighboring towns are mixed in appeal. redlands is small, quaint. san bernardino is icky. riverside is ok. however, all of this is relative to what you are living in right now. for some, the area is fabulous. again... a question of reference point.

however... the location is within an hour of everything you would ever want to do or see. for example:
mountains/skiing--30 minutes
desert (palm springs) 45 minutes
beach/los angeles--an hour
Disneyland--45 minutes
airport--20 minutes
orange county--45 minutes

so although Loma Linda is dull, good getaways are close enough. and there are good mid-range getaways (malls, movies, restaurants( in the immediate area.

As far as the school itself goes... the hospital/medical center is well respected in the Inland Empire. It may not be as new and modern as the other CA medical schools, but there are other factors (spirituality/missions mindedness/sense of intimacy) that the bigger places lack. For the right student, LLU will be the perfect place. Someone, who may be attending it as a backup school, might not be as happy there.

All of the doctors that i have seen related to the medical school/center have been very kind, nice.

Good luck to all those who are still waiting 🙂 :luck:
