Interviews at Loma Linda

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've just received an interview invite today. Should I go? Do you guys think the interview is just for waitlist position?

Do you live close to Loma Linda? If so, it couldn't hurt to go. On the other hand, if you don't really have any intention of attending Loma Linda, going to an interview would be kind of pointless. I don't know whether you would be interviewing for a waitlist position.

I agree with paceac. If you don't have any intention of attending, I wouldn't go, especially if you don't live near the school. It's just really expensive. I also don't know if they are interviewing for waitlist. Sorry for not being able to offer any help 🙁

Hey paceac, did you ever write that letter of intent? If you need any help with it, don't hesitate to ask 🙂

Hi-
I've been working on it. I'm not really sure what I should include in the letter. Should I just reiterate why I want to attend or should I include what I've been up to since I interviewed? It doesn't seem like I've been doing anything too spectacular.

If you're writing a letter of intent , write about who solidified your decision to want to go to LLU (interviewers you talked to, students, ect). Also, don't forget to write that if accepted, you will definately accept the offer. My letter of intent was only a paragraph long, but it's quality, not quantity.

If you're writing a letter of interest / update letter, then you can put in what you've been doing lately, why you like the school, how you think you fit in, etc.

Thanks for the help. I'm writing a letter of intent and I am going to keep it short and to the point. The admissions people have so much stuff to read as is. I will try and finish up the letter this afternoon and send it off tomorrow. We'll see what happens. I'll post if I hear anything. Thanks again.

👍 anytime! 🙂

What address should I send my letter of intent to? Who should it be addressed to? Dr. Nyirady, the admissions committee or both? Thanks

You can address it to Dr. Nyirady, Ms. Edwards, OR the admissions committee (I called them to ask about mine). Personally, I addressed Dr. Nyirady, and I sent it to Dr. Nyirady who's office is in the admissions office, so just use the admissions office address.

Here's what i found out. i attended a private SDA school for my undergrad. Because of that i had the opportunity to have Dr. Nyriday come to our school and interview my classmates and myself. He and i have had a few personal conversations. When i got the call saying i had been accepted he mentioned that the adcom had met the day before. that puts the meeting dates at about the 15th of every month. He just visited our campus again to meet with the prospective juniors. i visited with him about his plans and he said that he had to get home because the adcom would be meeting again. so i believe there is at least one more meeting. Also he told my advisor and other teachers that "denial" letters will start coming out after this last meeting. So i would assume that they are going to start waitlisting people. BUT....he gave my teachers the impression that letters of recommendation or letters of intent are still helpful! His one word of caution....be sure they are specific!! He said he can't stand letters that say nice "fluffy" things without being specific...he's wants details and personal stories! Things are really tough this year...seven of us from this class applied...and only two have gotten in...Praise God that i'm one of them! Best wishes to everyone that has gotten in...and to those that are still waiting! No matter where we all end up...we got some awesome years ahead of us! 😀

Congrats, CaliforniaBound! 😀 Just curious, do you go to La Sierra?

Thanks for the information CaliforniaBound and congratulations on getting accepted. I just sent off my letter of intent today. I hope it was specific enough.

Congrats CaliforniaBound! So...do I have a new classmate?? --> are you definitely going?

I have an interview schedules for April and I was wondering how long were you at the school? I have to buy my ticket back to Houston from San Diego so I'm wondering if I would be able to get on the plane the same day.

I'm guessing the class is going to be full but since I'm already going to be in Cali I thought I would give it a shot and just pay the 150 to change my flight dates. Let's pray they have left a few spots open for people they are still interviewing.

They always have a few spots open....or should i say a few spots that open up! They usually waitlist people around april or may...and then when people decline or decide to go to another school they start offering spots to those people! My advisor told me of a time when a guy found out the day before LLU started that he had been accepted....that's cutting it a little close there! 😀 So definately go and give it your best shot! Dr. Nyirady is sooo nice and the whole admissions team is awesome! Just be yourself and you'll do great. Not sure about the plane thing though...i didn't interview at the school...so couldn't help there...but if you call and communicate with Lenoa Edwards she should give you a better idea! And yes angelinebear...i am most definately going to LLU...so you have a new clasmate! 🙂 Best of wishes to those that are still applying! ( :luck: )

Are you scheduled to interview on a group day or individual? During my interview day, I didn't have a group, so it was just 2 interviewers and a meeting with Dr. Nyirady, around 1 hr each. I was in at around 8:30, and out by 12:30-1. I'm not sure how long the interview day is if you are interviewing with a group, though because I think you get a tour, a lunch, and all that jazz. I'm sure there are a few people on this forum that had days with interview groups if that is your case. 🙂 Good luck on your interview, and congrats on the invite :luck:

I interviewed in a group and I was out by about 2:30.

i was wondering...what are your living arrangements going to be at Loma Linda. Apartment or on campus housing?

AGHH! The whole housing thing is so frustrating! Apartments are super expensive....around 750 min for a one bedroom--one bath! Just not used to paying those prices! Student housing is just dorms--aparently the student aparments are all full and the waitlist is 150 names long!!!! So i sent in an app. for the women's dorm...but not sure yet what to do...it is soo much cheaper to have a roomie and just split the rent...but i don't have any aquaintences out there...so i'm feeling very frustrated! Anyhoo...what are your plans? Does anyone have any info on cheaper houing out there??? Any info would be much appreciated!!!

I totally agree with you. Finding housing is soo expensive. My parents are probably going to buy me a new car for my graduation present, and I really don't want o pay 750 or more on top of that for an apartment. I agreed with them that I would try the dorms out for a while and see how I like it. My friend just graduated from the dental school, and she stayed in the dorms as well. My mom said that her mom told her that my friend really liked the dorms, so I'll see how it works out for me. Hopefully I can end up with a single (or a really cool roomate). The only problem for me are the community bathrooms 🙁 oh well

Bump! where is everyone? 🙂

I'm still here just waiting for that magical phone call. Anything new going on with anyone else? Have you guys figured out your housing situation yet?

Hey guys 🙂 Still here...about the housing situation. On LLU's web page they have a news editorial called the trading post. Apparently it has a ton of listings for apts and houses for rent. it also has rooms that are for rent...alot of families around there will rent out a room and a bathroom to a med student there. The prices are a lot more reasonable than a one bedroom apt. by oneself...i'm gonna see if maybe i can get one of these! As far as dorms go...i'm not sure i can deal with living in one again...i did through my undergrad. Having had an apt to myself this year i'm not sure i could revert to having a curfew and r.a.'s again! Oh well...guess i'll just have to play it by ear. i'm still trying to get all my money together to pay for LLU! Aghh....it's so dang expensive! is anyone else having problems getting their financial aid together? Anyways...i'm super excited about going....it appears as if there is quite alot to do around there! Not that we will have a social life or anything 😛 but it is good to have the option 🙂

Hey Californiabound!
My mom called LLU about curfews, because I was worried that they'd have one, but the person with whom she spoke to said that they didn't have any. As for me, I just sent in my application for a dorm. I guess I can make it as "home-like" as possible. i'm still worried about the community bathrooms, though 🙁 At my school, our dorms are big, my roomate and I have our own bathroom, and a cleaning service comes in every 2 weeks to vacuum our room and clean our bathroom for us. LLU is going to be a biiiig change from that.

I was looking at all the stuff there is to do, too, and I was surprised that they had all those activities. I guess they're there to keep us sane after studying too much 😛 I can't' wait! 6 more weeks of college left!! 😀

Anyways, Good luck with finding the rooms for rent! :luck:

Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear! Good luck paceac! :luck:

Did anyone get an acceptance call today? This was the day last month that people were called.

I think I may have answered my own question. I just went on the LLU website and their spring break is this week. So maybe those who are waiting will hear something next week.

Hi all. Just wondering if any of you know if they're still interviewing at Loma Linda. I completed my secondary in Nov, got notice that my file was complete in mid-Jan and haven't heard from then since. I was figuring that if they're not at all interested in me, by now I should have gotten some reject letter.

Do any of you know if they honor application status checks?

Thought I might add...

I went to Loma Linda for graduate studies and lived in Lindsay Hall (the all-girl dormitory). The housing cost is CHEAP, the hall feels very secure, the rooms are decent (it's what you make of it) and don't worry about the community bathroom situation. It's very different from living in the dorms of a major public university; Lindsay feels more private. The way the showers are set up is: there is one door first that leads to a changing area with a little bench (if I remember correctly) then the changing area leads to the shower door. This was the way it was in my hall, at least. So, you have a private changing area thankfully. My stay there was pleasant. I've lived in an apartment nearby when I started working and the housing cost was decent. If you compare housing cost in Loma Linda and surrounding areas to places like Orange County, San Diego County, Bay Area, etc, Inland Empire housing costs rock! But if you don't mind living in the dorms, Lindsay is an even cheaper alternative. BTW, they also have Daniels. They're on-campus apartments...also a cheap alternative. Daniels is open to male undergrads AND female graduate students! Hope this helps a little. If you want more info, you can PM me.

Nothing new with me re: LL.

I wonder what happened to the March adcom meeting? It seems like no one has heard anything since the third week of February. Maybe they just met to form a waitlist and the waitlist/rejection letters are on their way out? Anybody have any ideas?

They are definitely still interviewing. Some folks were interviewed last week. I had mine a couple of months ago, but still waiting to hear. It's my #1 choice, mainly because I live really close by. Does anyone know when the adcom met last month, or when they will meet this month?

By the way, housing is cheap relative to the rest of socal. I'll be thrilled if I can find a 1BR for less than $800/month. Of course I have to get accepted first, and it's probably a long shot.

i just called LLUSOM today to check on my application status. i guess i got an answer, not the one i had hoped for: "your file went into review on 1/13 and you should get notification within the next two weeks." this sounds like a rejection to me. how depressing!

The adcom, from what I've heard, meets mid month. They met in January and February but I haven't heard of anybody hearing anything recently. Why do you think it is a long shot, if you don't mind me asking? You got an interview so there was at least something they liked about your application. Good luck!

Don't give up yet. Angelinebear called and got the same sort of response but then got an acceptance call not too long thereafter. I called a few weeks ago and they told me I would be notified when a decision was made. I'm not sure but they may also send out letters to let you know you have been waitlisted. It's not exactly what everone is hoping for but its better than getting a rejection letter. I hope you hear something positive.

Thanks for the uplifting post. I would love even a waitlist from them but, unfortunately, I haven't even had the opportunity to interview. Do you have any suggestions of anything I can do within the next two weeks that may cause them to even consider interviewing me? I was thinking of sending one of those letter like Angelinebear sent. Would you recommend that move? Or do you think, at this point, since I haven't interviewed, I'm pretty much a "No"?

I re-read through this thread and I just wanted to say THANKS to everyone who are praying for all the LLU hopefuls (esp. Angeline and Paceac); that is one thing that makes LLU so GREAT -- people like you who care. During my two years there and during my time working for the county (where most of my bosses and co-workers were LLU graduates), I surely experienced the care, concern, and friendliness of the people. I absolutely LOVED my time there and would be blessed to return, if given the chance.

For those of you have have received the good news, you are fortunate and will love your every moment there. CONGRATS!

Does anyone know how LLU's alternate list works, or when they will make it? I heard someone say that it is unranked, whatever that means.

MAN! this thread just got back to life!

Okay....so...when you call LLU, they can't tell you anything on the phone (like what many of us experienced already) BUT...it's good to call them to let them know you're still interested. When I called them, they pretty much told me that they will let me know. I know how you guys feel. It's frustrating! Keep your hopes up, okay! Also, remember that if you are put on the waitlist, you're still in the running. I heard somewhere that Loma Linda really likes to see exactly how interested you are in their school. Send them updates and letters. Call if you have any questions. Maybe, if possible, set up a meeting with Dr. Nyirady. I'm not expert at "applying to med school 101", but I do know that if this is the school that you know you will be the happiest, don't hesistate to show them. A very wise advisor told me that sometimes the things that you hold in will hold you back. 😉

I PM'ed you Tabi

I would write an honest letter expressing your continued interest. I don't think it can hurt your chances but only help. I would send it off as soon as possible though.

Hi everyone,

I just got my rejection letter from LLU today. 🙁 Do you guys think its worth any of my time to ask for an appeal or speak to anyone or do ANYTHING. LLU was my first choice school. depressed....

Asking for an appeal couldn't hurt, especially if it is your first choice. I remember seeing a post on another thread where a student appealed for an interview at another school, so it is possible. Whatever you decide to do, don't give up.

I'm sorry to hear that. As a Christian, (I don't know if you are) its comforting to know that God has an even better plan than what we thought the best plan was (although initially that is not always easy to come to terms with). My feeling is that it can't hurt to write a letter expressing your disappointment. I think it would help next year if you decide to apply again. I'm sure they would remember your file and sincere desire to attend LLU.
