iowa c/o 2015 applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I second this

This requires an acceptance on the part of my IS, and everyday I lean a different direction, and like the rest of you I fell in love with ISU. My IS doesn't offer that much of a break financially compared to OOS tuition at Iowa State, so that's not even really a major difference. I'll let you know if yall can start calling dibbs on that spot though. 😉

I just hope we get a temporary alternate number in the snail mail. I know they did last year...

I just want to know if I have a shot, you know?

That would be great!
The email says will know our "exact" number on the 22nd, so maybe!

Any tips on finding affordable places close to the vet school?

Did anyone waitlisted with Iowa last year get a tentative ranking? I was waitlisted but I had some weird situation with my letter/alternate status so I didn't get my letter until later in the year and I had no ranking in my letter.

I know a lot of students live in the trailer park that is right next to the vet school. Not sure if you were looking for more variety and what not. Heard its super cheap and the students usually room together there.

I was kind of hoping for a 2bdrm apartment to rent...my boyfriend is moving with me, and I'm not too keen on the idea of buying a trailer. I've heard some horror stories, especially about trying to sell them.

but thanks 🙂

Has anyone recieved their snail mail about their alternate status? Im anxiously awaiting my letter and really hoping they have a tentative ranking included! ohhh how i hate this waiting....

No mail has reached NY yet...I really hope there's a ranking too, I guess we will find out soon 🙂 !!!

Nothing here. Letters went out Friday, but yesterday was a holiday, so I'm hoping for tomorrow and a number! :xf: I hope we're all high up!

Good luck to everyone! ISU is seriously consuming my thoughts 24/7.

:xf:

so no packets in the mail out here in California either...

So is it just me or can others confirm that Iowa basically puts all OOS on the alternate list and then once they've heard from their IS after April 15th start pulling off the list?

A few OOSers have said here that they got accepted... I think it is just coincidence honestly.. and bad luck for the OOS applicants on SDN 🙁

Thanks Hawk. It just sucks cause I really like Iowa just hate having to wait to see how all the chips fall.

This. What you see on SDN is only a small part of the applicant pool... especially with our larger class size (about 60 IS, 60 OOS, and 20 UNL). I've said it before and I'll say it again: The waiting sucks but don't count yourself out until you know where you are on the waitlist! Hopefully the letters will bring good news :luck:

I can't really comment on apartments (I own a trailer -- they aren't that bad! 🙂) but one of my classmates posted this a few years ago: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=627732. You can also find housing resources here: http://vetmed.iastate.edu/academics/current-students/incoming-students/housing.

I was totally against buying a trailer last year at this time too but I heart my trailer. It is seriously my favorite part of vet school😍

You do have more upkeep (like owning a home) but the convenience cannot be beat and I love being able to quickly stop home and grab something to eat and let my pups out.

Of course I dislike apartments in general so this had been ideal for me.

The trailers posted for sale on the housing link seem so overpriced though, and I don't know if some of them are insurable considering how old they are. Do you mind me asking roughly how much you paid for yours?

You can definitely get insurance for them! Mine's a 1970 and is insured through Progressive; I think Geico will also insure older trailers.

As far as price, they may seem overpriced but most cost a lot less than 4 years of rent for a 2bdm apartment in Ames. You'll also be able to turn around and sell it for at least what you paid (which is what most people do). Granted, some of them probably are a bit overpriced considering there are people who move in and do nothing to the trailer (like fix floors that really need it or an a/c unit that's been leaking for 3 years, for example) -- you just have to poke around a bit. Those ones are usually fairly obvious and most people do maintain their trailers nicely. The park managers also remove the really decrepit trailers and bring in new ones.

As far as cost, I paid less than $15,000 for mine.

In the end, though, you've just got to figure out the best housing situation for you. The main reasons I decided to go with a trailer are because I can walk to school (big for me after driving 45min-1h to work) and I can have my dog (no size and/or breed restrictions like most apartments... he's a big GSD mix). Other people want to go home to a different part of Ames, or not have to worry about fixing things themselves, or want a bigger space, etc. Some people go with an apartment first year and then buy a trailer. It just depends on what you're looking for.

I got my official letter in the mail today with more info on the waitlist. Disappointed! I was hoping to get some sort of idea of my ranking, but nada. And to make it worse, it sounds like they won't be calling anybody at all off the waitlist until after April 15 - even if a bunch of spots open up, they won't even let the people on the top of the waitlist know for another two months. Ahhhhh if I just have that and don't get good news from other schools sooner... :bang:

Ugh. That sucks. I was really hoping for even a "top 25%" or some indication like that. I guess we just have to wait and do our best to convince the accepted OOS people not to go. haha

This = 👎

So, out of curiosity, how do the people that buy a trailer pay for it? I've been looking at a lot of them and it seems as though the ones I like are all between 20-35,000... and I obviously don't have that much saved up. 🙂 Do you just take out a private loan/"mortgage" for it or what?
My nana was originally going to help me pay for a trailer/house and now I'm losing faith that that will happen.

Fyi, Brenda is amazing if you ask her questions.
😀😀😀

I definitely want to get a trailer! I actually already picked one out when I interviewed (cart ahead of the horse, but hey iowa is far away from me😀), but it will probably be long gone by the time April rolls around🙁. I looked at a couple of trailers and they were actually way nicer than I expected, even the older models are really great. After living with a roommate in a dorm for 4 years, having not only my own room, but an ENTIRE TRAILER to myself would be awesome! Of course I really hope to get a roomie (once I get to know my classmates) or a dog/cat 🙂.
The students were super nice too and the girl whose trailer I really like said she would help me find one if hers was sold and I got pulled of the list. The people who own the trailer park will inspect/ look at trailers for you too if you are unable to check them out before school starts😉. So if you get in a bind, I would consider giving them a call. I just love how awesome the people at Iowa are😍

I was on the OOS waitlist but just emailed them(couldn't find any other official way to notify them listed on anything besides not responding by April 15th) to take me off the list as I got into my IS school today. Hopefully that moves someone up the ladder!

😉

Many thanks!!!

Hahaha sorry guys, didn't mean to panic you and didn't see your answers till now since I was at work all day. Yes, I was told my current rank and that based on the way the waitlist usually moves, I am in a very good spot. She even said I could get an update from her in the future. I love helpful adcoms 🙂
Good luck, hope everybody gets good news!

Pretty much. There are a couple banks in Ames that will work with you (can't remember which ones though), but I think most people just go with their bank.

It is totally awesome after that! My only roommates have four legs and I wouldn't have it any other way... even if it would be a tad cheaper 😉

Cue swamping of admissions office leading them to refuse to give out alternate numbers in 3..2...1...

Let's be classy about this and spread it out over a few days.

I have dibbs on email tonight. 😀

(I also will lose a $3,000 dollar deposit to a school that I don't really want to go to if I get called into ISU after the 15th)

Haha yeah, don't tell them I told you, and hopefully they won't get too swamped! 😛
Eek, we will get called from ISU after the 15th - she will tell us where we are on the waitlist and we can kind of assume based on that, but it doesn't sound like we'll find out anything till after the 15th deadline. Boo.

I would be incredibly grateful if they could just tell me what quartile I was in! I don't have a lot of money right now so to spend $3,000 on a deposit for my back-up only to find out I am #5 on the waitlist for ISU would be a huge blow to me.

I'm emailing her too!

I'm emailed her before, but I emailed as a reply to my decision letter. so that probably wasn't the best idea  Now, I just have to :xf: for a good rank!!!

So I've found that a lot of the mobile homes in old orchard have sold already...I won't be able to come look at any until next weekend and am hoping there are still plenty left to choose from.

I was just wondering if anyone knows if people who are selling this year have all posted by now or if any listing will show up later?

The housing list will keep getting updated; not everyone lists theirs there, though. In any case there are still a number of "for sale" signs throughout the park (well, at least the parts I usually walk around in) and I'm sure more will follow 🙂.

so if we show up say on a sunday and see a for sale sign, are people pretty willing to do impromtu showings?

I'd plan on having to set up a time. VM4s are usually crazy busy even on weekends.

ETA: And if it's a VM2 or VM3 selling, our test schedules are ridiculous through March 11 so we're also crazy busy.

any luck on hearing back, other waitlisters? i hope we didn't flood her too much!

I heard back! Im pretty happy with my number as well! 😀 She was very prompt in her reply! Im definitely impressed with how nice admissions is at ISU and how efficient they are!
Still crossing my fingers for everyone! :xf:

I and got my number.
Not terrible, but not great. 🙁

I'll keep hoping. :xf:

Does anyone know how long the list is? I just called, and she gave me relative position, so I'm curious as to what number that might be.

Thanks 🙂

(And she is really nice 🙂 I was so nervous when I called, but I didn't really need to be)

After I seen this I tried to call, but got a voicemail twice. So then I emailed. I feel like such a stalker... I also wonder how long the list is as well!!!!!! I need some sense of security already!
