iowa c/o 2015 applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
^ Yeah, I emailed and she hadn't responded, so I decided just to call. The way she told me, though...

if there's 100 people I'm in a good spot, if there's 200, I'm probably not going to get in...

If you do get her, do you mind asking how many are on the list?

I will def ask if I don't get all flustered and start freaking out... When did you email her? Because I wonder when I should call again lol. I have become a stalker... oh dear...

Maybe I have too much comparative anatomy on the brain (lab practical tomorrow), but this is confusing to me. I'm guessing that she didn't give you an actual number, but why would you be worse off if there were 200 on the list?

I left her a voice mail on Friday morning, then emailed her Friday afternoon. I don't want to be pushy, but I also have a couple of questions about financial aid, and everything is due tomorrow!

She told me I'm about half way down the list. So if there's 100, that puts me at 50, and probably a pretty good chance of getting in. If there's 200, I'm about 100, which isn't a very good number.

I'd go ahead and call this afternoon anyway; she was out all or part of Friday and may not have gotten to your messages yet. As far as financial aid -- http://www.financialaid.iastate.edu/vetmed/ might be able to answer your questions.

As far as everything being due -- March 1 is the priority deadline (for things like HPSL) but the "final" deadline isn't until like June. So don't freak out if you don't get the FAFSA in quite yet; you'll get enough aid to cover everything.

Oh, got it. I will ask if I can get a hold of Brenda today.

Also, thanks for the link, cuitlamiztli. That was very helpful. Are you a dual degree student? I was hoping to apply to the MPH/DVM program. Of course I would need to get off of the waitlist first lol. Otherwise I'd like to start a MPH at my current university, reapply to vet school, and continue the MPH in the summmers.

Anyone else a dual degree student?

It was my intention to do the DVM/MPH program but I decided that since vet school alone is going to be a heavy load, I didn't want to force myself to have even less of a life. There is more information on the UI CPH website if you're interested 🙂

Nope, not a dual degree student, but everyone I've talked with who is also getting their MPH is happy with their decision.

So kinda upset, cause I never got my letter due to mailbox issues in my apt. So Brenda had to email me everything. When I talked to her on the phone she said she would give me an idea where I was on the list in the email with my other stuff. So I got the email... nothing... Then sent another email back asking the same question about the list... She said she wasn't allowed to give out the information. Yet, earlier said she would give me some info and it seems everybody else got an idea at least. Her response was it will not hurt to remain on the list... Well if I have no chance I would like to put a deposit maybe at another school even though Iowa was higher on my list, so I think it could hurt me pending where I am at... Geez feel like I shoulda put this on the rant thread!

I talked to another woman at admissions (not Brenda) and she told me the same thing. Pretty much that where you are on the list does not matter since things will change so drastically over the next few months. I am in the same position as you (Iowa is my #1 but I was wait-listed and then accepted to UC Dublin which has a HUGE deposit that I may lose). I understood everything I was told (call back in early April... don't make any decision based on the current number since it could easily move...) but I decided I wanted to know the worst case scenario. I called again this morning, spoke to Brenda, and just said I was OOS alternate and wanted to know my general placement. She then gave me a tentative number.

I hope everything works out for you!

Finally got a hold of Brenda. She said ISU isn't releasing rankings, so she wouldn't give me any sort if idea of where I was :-( :-(

More waiting, I guess...

I said this earlier in a different thread, but I would just like to remind you all that they DO read SDN. Just saying. This is by no means a stab at anyone I swear, but maybe they caught on and don't want everyone bombarding them with emails.

Also, my parents had to forward me my acceptance packet. I just chased down the mailman because I expected it to be here yesterday haha... Embarrassing, and now it may get forwarded back to ISU since I didn't have my name inside my mailbox. AWESOME.

Aww I'm sorry 🙁

I had a feeling something like this would happen. I was hoping people would spread it out over a few weeks or something.

I also sometimes forget that there are many lurkers on SDN. Even if only 3 or 4 people are discussing something, there may be 40 people reading it.

The tentative number doesn't mean much anyway. It can easily change SO much between now and April. I found out mine and it really hasn't made any difference. I am still counting down the days...

If it makes you feel any better it wasn't all that exciting....all the stuff is available on the website. But I get it is nice to actually get it in the mail🙂

sorry guys, my fault
😳

Everyone turn in their intent to remain on the waitlist?

I think spring break is really helping with the waiting. It's hard to worry when you're in the Florida sunshine! After break, only 1 month until April 15th 🙂.

Well, I turned in my acceptance of my acceptance if that counts! 🙂 I also went and bought a trailer this weekend. sooops pumped.

Ok so this is a question for current ISU students...

Right now I am wait-listed (OOS) and have been accepted to UC Dublin and am also wait-listed at Glasgow. I was talking to my mother about which school I would pick of I got into all three and why. One thing that came up was the price. I mentioned how Dublin has a very high tuition ($45k/year) which is subject to be increased and combined with the fluctuation of the dollar I could go deeply into debt. She knows that ISU is my #1 choice but she always has to play the devils advocate so she brought up a good point. Iowa does not lock in their tuition and right now the state is not doing too well financially. Education is usually the first budget that is messed with. This means that tuition could go up (?).

ISU students... how much has tuition been raised since your first year? Is there like a generic percentage that it goes up each year? Is there some cap?

This won't really make a big difference to me, ISU is still my #1, but I am just curious.

EDIT: did some digging online. Looks like historically it goes up about $1,000 each year.

I wish there was a simple "like" button on SDN. I would totally click it for this! Congrats on the new trailor!!

Awaring: I'm sorry that you have such a tough decision. Just remember that you want to be a veterinarian, so you have to do whatever it takes (in your means) for you to get there!

I was accepted to my IS, so I emailed Brenda last week and removed myself from the waitlist. I don't know how high up I was, but hopefully it helps one of y'all get in 🙂

I talked to a vet student yesterday who mentioned they increased it like $2000 last year? I could be wrong there......but 1,000/year might be about right. even though, a couple thousand dollars is still much less than twenty-something thousand more at some schools.....

Just turned in the form saying I won't be accepting their invitation for admission (I meant to do this earlier.. sorry)... so hopefully this means an alternate will hear from them soon!

Yep! sent mine in too, now just waiting for the 15th to get my rank :xf:

well, just to let you know OOS tuition this current academic year was $42,000...so not very far from Glasgow. Add on living expenses and fees and you are in the mid 50k range very quickly.

Also expect a 3-5% tuition raise per year as the Iowa legislature has cut ISU's funding about 10% / year and I doubt that will change in the next 4 years.

My understanding is we will not find out next year's exact tuition until the legislature is done with their wrangling (which is going on now BTW).

Honestly every time I think about my tuition and debt level I get the same sick feeling in my stomach that I get walking into an anatomy exam, sigh. :barf:

Honestly, pick your cheapest option for vet school, you really will be better off.

Less than one month!

To my fellow alternates... :xf:

i just want to confirm that number. $42k for 2010-2011 just tuition? or does it include books/supplies and medical insurance?

I think it is more of $38-39k

It has historically gone up like $1-2k/year, so I feel like $42k would be a bit high.

I think they said about $50k/year including living expenses and such at the fin aid session. I don't remember exactly and I don't have the paper in front of me.

$42,000 for just tuition is accurate. Spring semester is about $3,000 cheaper (I have no idea why) so that may be where the confusion is coming from. Books and any other expenses are not included in that number.

(I promise this is accurate....I have been charged this amount!)

with the state budget cuts and possible layoffs, do you (current students) feel that the school is or will be spread thin in terms of instructors? any instructors taking over classes that they normally don't teach?

also, with the new/remodeled teaching hospital(s), are they going to have new medical equipment or will it just be the building and fixtures? do you or your professors feel that lack of equipment is ever an issue?

No to both... Many of our instructors already teach in multiple courses, but that's generally due to expertise and not simply needing a body to head the course. And budget cuts haven't had much of an impact on our instructors yet so I don't think it will be an issue (at least in the next few years).

It's also a little early to tell what may happen next year since the budget's won't be set until like June. In any case we've been told that the administration will do what they can to retain the current faculty/support faculty.

IIRC some departments may get new equipment... I don't know which ones but I think I've heard it mentioned.

I don't think that lack of equipment has ever really been an issue.

cool, that's good to hear!

also, is iowa missing any small animal specialties? and do you feel that there is more emphasis on food animal or large animal compared to small animal? i only found this page on residencies and thought that its weird to see only 4 on there. thanks!

If anything I'd say the emphasis is skewed slightly more toward small animal -- at least thus far in our coursework. But professors have been pretty good about incorporating both as long as it's applicable. Once we hit third year a ton of electives open up and we can start taking courses specifically applicable to our interests.

As far as missing specialties... I think you'd have a hard time finding a teaching hospital with a representative from each. Going from the AVMA list it looks like we're missing lab animal, poultry, small animal ABVP, behavior, clinical pharmacology, small animal emergency and critical care, nutrition, zoological medicine, and dentistry diplomates. Some of the info was hard to find so that information may not be completely accurate. And I think I remember hearing that two of our clinicians are working on becoming board certified in dentistry and zoological medicine (companion exotics).

The page you found on residencies is only one department. Off the top of my head I know we've got residencies in pathology, cardiology, ophthalmology, small mammal internal medicine, dermatology, anesthesiology... they're not necessarily available every year, though. The list of what was open for this year can be found here on the VIRMP site.

Hope that helps!

thanks, that's very helpful, cuitlamiztli!

oh and are the grading percentages spread over several midterms and one final?

oh and are the grading percentages spread over several midterms and one final?

It depends on the course. IIRC most core courses 1st and 2nd year have been graded on 3 exams + the final... but some are only midterm + final, others are 2 exams + final, 4 exams + final, etc. A lot of classes also have quizzes and/or (usually short) assignments; there are also things like presentations for some classes. And there are a number of courses where we can drop our lowest exam or quiz score.

You just look at the syllabus at the beginning of the semester and go from there.

In regards to the residencies nobody has mentioned anything about Neurology... during the tour they said you guys had just gotten a new neurologist in the past couple years, and do have a chapter of the american college of veterinary internal medicine in neurology, do any of you current students know about the activities or wetlabs that are available through that, and does that mean you also have the option for a Neuro rotation during your clinical year?

Our practicing neurologist just joined us in the past year or so (our other neurologist is consultation only) -- I'm not sure if a residency has been/is/will be offered, though.

We do have a neurology club (it's not an official chapter of the ACVIM). It was started last year so it's still pretty small; they've done large and small animal neuro exam wetlabs, and I know they were planning a fainting goat field trip-type deal last year (don't remember if it went or not).

And the neurology rotation has been around for a while.

Thanks! for the response. I found out today that I got into my IS (which isn't much of a cost break so that's not much of an issue) but I was really impressed with ISU and liked the campus and students I got to meet at the interview weekend as well. So.... now I'm at decision point, it feels like it's been so long since I visited, and I'm trying to be practical and make a pro/con list... for current students, are there any really unique experiences or things you wouldn't trade that you've gotten at ISU, or even cons that you want to share. Thanks so much, and you can PM me if you don't want to write those on this thread.

Go to your IS and save money!

😀 😉

I agree, go to your IS and save money.

I LOVE ISU, I love living in Ames, it is a great fit for me but if I would have had a cheaper option I would have taken it. Having multiple people question my sanity on why I am pursuing an OOS DVM with a 200k debt load gets old very, very quickly. Not to mention they have a super legitimate point.

Unless you have your heart set on swine then come to ISU...we have an amazing swine program here. 😍

Good luck making your decision!

Ohh and the 42k is straight off my university bill, no exaggeration or estimations (and no fees, insurance, computer added in)...Remember I am OOS, it is much cheaper IS.

I've been holding off on starting the countdown until we get our official ranks, but I guess the waiting has finally got to me🙄! 23 days til April 15th !!! I'm going to be optimistic and guess we find out then 🙂...even though they wont start calling people til a few days later:xf:

I am so with you. If I think about it too much it drives me crazy.

I thought we didn't get our rank...etc. until April 22nd?

Exactly. I start to think of "what if I get in? what if I don't get in? What will my number be? Should I buy a new computer yet? What will I do when they call me? When will I give up if they don't call me? etc..."

There is nothing I can do about it now, but the waiting is killing me.

Does anyone know when they start making calls? Will it be the 15th? Or will they wait until the 22nd?

I'm so excited :xf:

Sounds to me like somebody really wants one of THE REMAINING SPOTS at Iowa State CVM for next year....

While I AM ON THE WAITING LIST. It is still a GOOD PIECE OF ADVICE to anyone in that situation. Also my WINKING FACE was to show that is was somewhat IN JEST.

SO MUCH CAPS AND BOLD.
