Iowa Carver 2012 Status?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
From what I heard on the interview day, a large portion of the class is filled by the final pool. Although OOS might have a disadvantage because the majority of the class is filled with Iowa residents. Being an Iowan, I feel I have a decent chance of getting an acceptance in March. If I was an OOS, I would probably be concerned about the likelihood of an acceptance because there will probably be a lot of OOS applicants in the final pool compared to the number of spots available. This being said, my tour guide was from OOS and got accepted from the final pool. Good luck :luck:

I'm not sure how they select applicants based on the final pool, but I'd figure since they have separate instate and OOS waitlists that they'd just as well have separate admissions decisions for IS and OOS applicants as well.

Also, for anyone who may be interested, below are two past final pool threads where people talk about getting accepted/waitlisted/rejected from the final pool. GL :luck:

Well I called today and pretty much got confirmation that I have been put in this final pool to be reviewed in March. I'm OOS by the way. Does anyone have any idea roughly how much of the class is filled through the rolling process vs the last chance in March? I basically am just curious if chances of admission are decent or next to nil coming from this "final pool". Any thoughts?

There is usually quite a bit of movement off of the waitlist for OOS. There are separate waitlists for In-state and OOS applicants. If you got an interview, your chances of getting in are about the same (even if off of waitlist)

There are obviously different admissions processes for instate and OOS. In the forums listed above, it was said that few OOS were accepted off of the final pool because they over-accepted during the rolling admissions process. And based on this forum, it seems there have been more OOS acceptances recently than instate. I think they have probably filled most of the OOS spots and being in the final pool is similar to a waitlist for OOS applicants.

I don't know how much of the OOS class is filled per rolling and final pool, so can't help there. However, poster KardiacKiehl was apparently accepted from the final pool as an OOS applicant last year: "University of Iowa - Complete 8/16, Interview Invite 9/11 (for 9/20), Accepted 3/9!!!" So, I think there is still hope. GL 👍

Has anyone received an e-mail informing them they have been placed in the March pool?

I'm not sure...when I called yesterday, she said that the rolling phase will be over within the next week. They will be sending out one more batch of acceptances for rolling admissions. I'm assuming the adcom will be meeting one more time before the end of January to decide who else they want to accept on rolling. The "final pool" e-mail will be sent out after the adcom meets, which could be today for all I know! AHHHHH! :scared: I'm so scared, because I really want to go to Iowa...if anyone knows anything else, please let those of us who are very cofused know...

I called yesterday and the lady on the phone (very polite, actually) told me that I was in the final pool of applicants and that the final word should be out in march. She didn't say more than that, but it was enough to give me a little hope!

Just got an email that said the same thing. Good luck everyone :luck:

ditto on that email.
so does this mean we're not "as good" as those people they are going to render decisions on at the end of this month? Their process is a little confusing..the whole final round vs. rolling thing

Well it looks like I didn't make it into Iowa on rolling either, *sigh*. I just got the same e-mail. But one thing I really don't get is who goes into the "final pool"? Is it everyone that wasn't accepted during the rolling phase? I agree, their process is extremely confusing... 😕

I also just got the e-mail. I, too, would like to know if they send this to EVERYONE that didn't get accepted by rolling admissions.

Has any IS applicants received this email yet?

Don't get too discouraged yet, my friends. If you made it to the "final pool" email, then you didn't get accepted during the rolling phase (obviously). But there a lot of folks get rejected during that phase as well, even post-interview, so you made it through at least one more cut. We aren't in yet, of course, but don't view the email as bad news - you made it past a lot of other applicants and you still have a good chance of getting in for the final pool or hitting somewhere on the waitlist.

This is predicated on my understanding of the email, which is that your application was reviewed, wasn't strong enough to warrant an outright acceptance, but also wasn't bad enough to merit a rejection. I'm not sure if all interviewees got reviewed, but it would seem to me that this is the case - now it's just sifting through the remainders.

I'm IS as well. YAY for another 6 weeks of torture! Why must they do this to us? It's really quite stressful.

I'm also IS. I interviewed at the end of September, so I had basically already given up on getting accepted by rolling admission. Getting the e-mail alone was nice . . . just to hear something from the school!

I'm OOS but can I still join the "Final Pool" email club?

I got the e-mail today for final pool and I'm OOS so it happens. I would still love to get in but does anyone know if everyone gets in this final pool or not? Was anyone sent a notice of rejection? I guess I get the feeling its a polite way to put me on a waitlist with slim chances(+ more waiting). I know I should try and be more optimistic but..

Yeah, I also got the final pool email. I'm OOS too. It's a bit discouraging...not good enough. jeez.

Just a little bit of info. I thought I'd share...
Although we are all in the "final pool" now, it doesn't mean we've always been there. It's possible to be considered in the rolling phase, and then if they decide not to offer you an acceptance right away, they will eventually place you in the pool. It's not necessarily the end of the world, that's all I'm saying. But, the longer the adcom keeps you in the rolling phase, the better off you are. The only way you could have known which pool you are in is by calling, and that's what I did. I think it's ridiculous that they don't let us know periodically by sending out an e-mail. Like once you're no longer in the rolling phase they should send an e-mail AT THAT TIME stating that you've been moved to the final pool. That way we'd all have a better idea of where we stand. But that would make way too much sense, wouldn't it?

Oh yeah...the only reason I know this is because I called the CCOM admissions office a billion times 😀. You'd be surprised what you can find out when you bother people...hehehehe.

Bump...if anyone else knows ANY other information, please share. 🙂

Its 41 degrees in Illinois right now, and I'm going golfing. Maybe not the info you were looking for but you were not very specific

Hahaha...that'll work, at least it made me laugh. And yes, the weather is freakin' amazing compared to what it has been. I was referring more to information about what people have heard about Iowa CCOM, and the chances if getting in if you're in the final pool and IS. Anyone have any stats? Probably not, but it's worth a shot!

I'm not optimistic, but does anyone have any updates?

I spoke with someone in the office today about a "2nd look" type thing. They have some kind of meeting for accepted students to see the school again and meet classmates on April 19th.

Just out of curiosity, arb011, why aren't you optimistic? I believe they accept more OOS than IS during rolling...have you heard otherwise 😕 God, I hope not...eeeeeeek.

Oh, I meant that I was not optimistic of an update from anyone, since no one will hear anything until March. Sorry for the confusion. And no, I haven't heard anything about stats as far as IS vs. OOS during rolling, but from what I have seen on SDN, the majority have been OOS.

Sorry...I'm paranoid. I'm just very Iowa obsessed, and really want to get in.

Does anyone know when orientation begins at Iowa for M1's? Thanks in advance!

Bump for ANY updates

When I called a few weeks ago, the admissions lady told me that we should have a decision by March 15th. I'll probably call again tomorrow and maybe they'll be able to tell me a more specific time period. I dunno...it's worth a shot though!

Why don't we all just chill and wait patiently until mid March? I don't see any point in badgering the admissions lady day in/day out.

I guess I'm just not a very chilled-out type of person 😛. One of the ladys just laughs every time I call, and says she understands and can tell that I really want it. Persistence is a good thing within reason.

Decisions will be mailed out between the 13th and 14th of March. So...depending on where you live, expect news within a few days after that.

God...this wait is killing me...

I'm so nervous, every time I think about it, my stomach gets tied in knots. Anyways...good luck to everyone! I hope we all get a big fat envelope in the mail come mid-March!! :luck:

anyone else called recently?

When march 15th rolls around, there is little doubt that many of us will be given a number on the wait list. Does anyone know how many people were accepted off the wait list in the last 3 years or so? If someone could find that out, it would be nice to know as we see our place on the list.

Last year Carver had just under 50 people on the in-state waitlist and they ended up taking 32. I was told that in 2006 they also took about 32 and if I remember right in 2005 it was a little less then that. So ideally you want to be in the top 25 or so to feel good about your chances.

I've heard of a few times when only 8-12 people were taken off the instate WL. I guess there's really no way to tell for sure. I'd say you probably want to be in the top 15 to feel REALLY good about it.

March 15th is coming soon, Last years thread showed that applicants found out they were accepted at the earliest March 7th if they were instate and March 9th out of state. I hope they let us know around the same time this year. The earlier the better, waiting kinda sucks.

I agree with FetalDoc...I'm going insane. I keep wanting to call again, but I know I can't because I don't have a specific question...other than, "can you pleeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaase accept me now?" 🙂

Anybody else biting their nails off waiting for "mid-March" to approach!? I interviewed in September and I have HAD IT with waiting! :barf:

And just for kicks...

...has anybody been accepted/denied/waitlisted from the final pool yet???
