Hey Everyone,
I'm a current VM1 at Iowa State and I thought I could hopefully alleviate some stress over the application process. From what they told us last year, their selection process is broken down into phases. If you pass the initial academic review your application is passed to the committee review. I wouldn't panic if you have made it to committee review but your GPAs aren't posted on the web page (they seem to be notoriously slow updating these things). Once the committee reviews your application it is given a score that is combines with the score from the academic review. If you meet the cut-off they have established then you will be offered an interview. Based on the classmates I've spoken to, this first interview weekend was mostly composed of in-state Iowa residents. The second interview date (Early December) had A LOT of contract students (CT, SD, NE, etc) but also a wide assortment of other states. The last 2 interview dates (January) seemed to be a mix of everyone.
On a happier note, good luck to everyone interviewing this weekend! Remember to relax and be confident! The interview is very laid back and they are not going to ask questions to trip you up. I'll be doing the student panel at 3:00 on Saturday and the white coat fittings on Sunday from 8:00-10:00, so feel free to ask me any questions you might have!
