There is a question that goes like this:

"In addition to being considered for one of the state contract or program positions, I would also like to be considered for a non-resident/non-contract position at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine (non-resident tuition charged)."

Must check yes or no

So ... if you're a non-resident do you check yes for this question? Or does this mean that if you're in-state or contract that you can receive additional consideration if you wish to pay out-of-state tuition? I'm confused. Anyone know?

Thanks.

I believe that's correct - I did not check the box last year because I did not want to be considered for anything other than a contract seat. A curent student would know better though, good luck!

You want to check 'yes.' I don't remember this question from when I applied to Iowa last year but you could always call the admissions coordinator to double check.

Oh and by the way...just to give you a little bit of extra hope, Iowa burns through their OOS applicant list like nobody's business so DO NOT be discouraged if you get wait listed...OOS people even get in that weren't originally even on the waitlist. You can look at last years threads about admissions offers.

I'd like to point out for the casual reader who might misinterpret this statement...Iowa State is an excellent school. They may have some difficulties attracting out of state students, but they really are great, and have some AMAZING new facilities. If I hadn't gotten into UCD, I'd probably be in Ames right now. I really liked ISU. 🙂

I bet a lot of people overlook places like Iowa because of obvious stereotypes the state has. I love it out here, the people are awesome, and the school is fantastic. In addition to the stereotypes about the state, I think many people also have a misconception that the school is mainly geared toward large animal medicine. So when someone who's not interested in large animal medicine gets accepted to another school, Iowa often gets pushed aside. Then, Iowa flies down the wait-list very quickly in order to fill the class. While it IS a very agricultural-friendly school, there are certainly other fields where the school shines (i.e. pathology and shelter medicine, to name a few). My point is that you can certainly get a great education at Iowa no matter what your veterinary goals are!

The thing is on their supp app they want to know why you would choose Iowa. Besides new facilities what else do you have going on there?

Well, I mentioned this a little bit already, but aside from the obvious strong point in large animal medicine, Iowa also has a great pathology program and a quickly growing shelter medicine program. Personally, I'm interested in anatomic pathology and Iowa has one of the leading programs for training to take the ACVP boards (which is actually being held in Ames this year!). Plus in general, I think many, if not most, people are interested in small animal medicine, and there's not really a "bad" vet school you can to if that's your interest because they're all pretty strong in that regard.

Some big USDA lab facilities are located very near by. http://ars.usda.gov/News/docs.htm?docid=10858&page=1
I'm post the info I compiled last year because I can't remember everything off the top of my head.

But I think what they're really looking for there is that you've actually researched ISU, rather than just adding them to a long list of schools to apply to without knowing anything about them. They want students who want them, too. With the internet, it shouldn't be too hard to find out some cool things about the school that speak to your area of interest.

Thanks for the info guys. I just wanted to get something first hand from someone who has actually visted or goes to school.

Sorry for any misinterpretation my original post might have elicited...I too, loved Iowa. I was just stating the simple fact that they burn through the wait list. I think it has to do with it's location and the simple fact that people who don't come from small towns look at Ames and go..."that's it?" Ames as a town is quite small, but it's very close to Des Moines which has everything you could want in a big town. Plus the school is one of the most beautiful that I have ever seen. They're opening up a big new equine facility and there is a lot of good research that comes out of Iowa. Chin up OOSers, Iowa is cool!

I believe that the question you are asking about only applies if you are a resident of CT, one of the Dakotas or NE. If you read the question it says "one of the state contract or program positions", so if you are not a resident of one of the states listed, that question really does not apply to you. So for instance if you are a CT resident you would be eligible for the CT contract. In the event that you may not be chosen for one of the contracts (ISU does not decide who gets the contract; officials in CT do that), ISU wants to know if you want to also have your name placed on the non-resident/non-contract ranked list as well.

As for "burning through the wait list", I think that a lot of the comments are dead on; especially the misconceptions:
1) ISU is only a large animal school-WRONG
2) Ames is a small town-SOMEWHAT TRUE. Its not NYC or Chicago but its population is about 50,000. I believe Manhatten is smaller than Ames but its funny, that I don't see/hear many making that comment about it. Stillwater may be a comparable size and it also is a nice college town...Go Eskimo Joes!

Also, when faced with the option of paying IS vs OOS tuition, any OOS person is going to jump at the chance to go to their state school or even a school closer to home should they be accepted after getting accepted at ISU. its just matter of finances and for some, not wanting to stretch the umbilical cord that far from home if they don't have to:laugh:

Woo!

I think Stillwater is at 47,000 with about 25,000 migrating in for college courses and the like. We aren't huge, but it's not like you can only eat at McDonald's and shop at Wal-Mart. Plus, Tulsa and OKC are both about an hour away, which isn't bad. I'm guessing that Ames is pretty similar.

FWIW, my sister's awesome boyfriend, who did undergrad at ISU, told me that Ames is "a little bland" but really not that bad, and also "there's a ton of great places to go camping!" He is like, mr. super-cool chicago award-winning sound designer rock-band guy, so if someone *that* indie could enjoy 4 years in Ames, I think most of us could, too 😀

Also for people still working on their supplemental:

I found their admissions brochure is online in pdf form now (don't know why I never saw it before) but I spent some time reading it and it gave me a lot of really good things to say for the "why do you want to come to Iowa" question. It sounds like they have a lot of GREAT programs there!!!

hey guys! can someone explain the DVM/MBA program, or direct me to where I can find more information? It sounds really neat (do any other CVMs offer it? it sounds like a unique program)!

I'm not sure which schools you're already looking at but CSU has a DVM/MBA option. Their website has a fair amount of info as well.
