Is it OK to have a low PAT score?

i would not be expecting 15-16 on the actual DAT if you're scoring that on cdp. i took 9 cdp's and started out with 15's and 16's but worked up to 21's and 22's in the weeks leading up to test day, and ended up with a 20. not saying im disappointed but im glad i didnt stop when i got a score i could live with during practice tests. the real thing was harder, and obv youre under more pressure. you need practice, and thats it. hole punching and cube counting especially can be perfected with practice and you need to get 100% of these right, and i mean 100%.

DUDE, I feel ya. These nerds are pissing me off and they think they are GOD and that we must listen to them since they have 250+AA scores. Especially the ones who put their scores in their signature. Do they NOT realize DAT is just one part of the application? they are probably just a bunch of introverted people that are gonna collapse during the interviews AHAHAHAH. Whatever. I am NOT jealous of their scores. I worked hard and I got a good GPA.

"ohhh , your score is NOT a 25+AA you better retake... bla bla bla" you got no chance for dental school . RETAKE? its freakin easier said than done.

Man Im glad we're on the same page about this. I found SDN to get informed on how to become a dentist not get bashed because I'm not above avg. I am avg, number wise, and that is not good enough. Hahaha the signature thing is soooooooo true, getting a good DAT score is probably the biggest accomplishment of their life! And that's fine and all but there is soooooo much more things in this process than just DAT. I know I will be pumped to get one acceptance, I don't need to get in to 10000 schools, you can only attend one! Haha are you applying this cycle?

Nahh I am applying next year (and thats exactly why these people are telling me to retake cuz I got 1 more year until I start my app). I freakin took the DAT 1 year ahead so I can have one less headache to deal with come application time... god..

Anyways, me too man. I don't give a crap what school I get into since I am doing the military scholarship so as long as the school is accredited, I am good. Even my recruiter said my DAT is solid.

You applyin this cycle man? how many schools total ? Your DAT is decent and paired with a decent GPA, you're golden.

Heeeeeey now. That ain't fair. 😛 This site is just full of overachievers, but some are very "in your face" about it.

I agree, though, that people on these forums can be unnecessarily harsh. "Harsh" might be an understatement. If your stats are bad, you're raked across the coals if you ask any questions. If you stats are very high, you're also raked across the coals for asking anything. Very lame. I'd much rather help people and be encouraging than tell them why their posts are either "outrageous and stupid because they have nothing to worry about" or "irrelevant because their scores are too low to get them in anyhow."

About the score deal, though... I think those that use the "DAT discussion" forum a lot are more likely to put their scores in their signature. When people ask for advice and they respond, having the scores down there kind of adds validity to what they are saying. I'd say that over half of the people on the DAT forum have scores in the signature. I've never been offended or made uncomfortable by them, and I really don't think they're there to brag or to make others jealous in a majority of cases. I had mine previously, but were told they'd make others "uncomfortable," which I found kind of bizarre. Like I said, this site is full of overachievers... Oh well.

I agree that some people tend to throw out the "retake!" advice far too casually. Retaking is a huge commitment and NOT FUN. And, heck, I see lots of people whose scores stay the same and/or go down in certain areas when they do have a retake. Can you say wasted time?!

Truly, though, congratulations on your scores. They're great. Though its good to have high standards, don't let the people with the 250AAs tear you apart if their advice is just ridiculous. 😉
 
Seems like you two are getting worked up over nothing. If you guys can't handle peoples' opinion then don't post in the first place asking what your chances are. No reason to bash the entire community. If the average for matriculating students is a 19AA and you score lower than it is only logical that people would tell you to retake. It's as simple as that. Also what's wrong with putting your scores in your sig? I sure as hell would do that if I had a 25AA.

I did NOT bash the "entire" community. Only 90% of them. The ones who think that 22AA+ or below must retake. There are few people in here that are nice and truly contribute to this website. Whatever, I am not gonna start an argument.

By bashing others in this post, you're putting yourself in with the group of people on this site that you don't like. I know that emotions run high right after you've taken your test; for me, it was just kind of like a brain dump of everything I had been building up over the past three months. Some people on here might be kind of rude, but I wouldn't try to alienate anyone. Relax! Most of us aren't out to get you. 😉

Dude I seriously think we might be related hahaha that is word for word my plan. I too took the DAT this summer to get it out of the way. And I want to do the hpsp as well.... This is getting weird! If you live in san diego then we are related.I really really want to go to ASDOH because they are huge on personality and ECs. I don't want to spend 4 hard ass years in d school with a bunch of awkward people. And I'll tell you this, I feel safe calling a lot of pre dents weird because I go to a large university and the pre dent club has a lot of weird people hahaha li think about 90% are crazy and the other 10% are really cool people.

Honestly, I don't know why this guy isn't banned yet. We had our DATs on the same day, and the funny thing is, he dedicated an entire thread to me wishing me good luck, then after our scores came down, he suddenly wants to "punch me in the face".

On the real DAT, it's the Angles and Keyholes that KILL TIME.

Mister BRZ24, you crack me up. :laugh: Don't be too hard on yourself. I had to take the DAT 2 times.

I think you'll do fine on the PA as long as you aren't hitting the nos button all the time. For the Angles, remember to look at the answer choices.
Ex:

A 1-2-3-4
B 1-3-4-2
C 1-3-2-4
D 3-4-2-1

Just by looking at the choices, you can tell right off the bat, either 1 or 3 is the smallest angle. Compare those two angles. If 3 is smallest, then you are done it's choice D.

However if 1 is the smallest angle, then you have to figure out which angle is the biggest (also eliminate choice D). I would start by comparing 4 and 2. After you are done comparing those two angles it should be pretty clear which choice is the correct answer.

There's no reason to lash out at those with higher scores. Chances are, they're very nice people who genuinely want to help others on these forums. Otherwise, why stick around, especially in the "DAT Discussions" forum? They've already nailed it, no further help needed.

This is purely personal opinion, but I've honestly found that the people on here with the HIGHEST scores are often the nicest and most helpful. I'm talking 25+. Quite a few of them exist on SDN, and I've never witnessed any of them having a superiority complex.

BRZ, I once thought you were a pretty chill guy who was very motivated and nice to others. I'm sure you still are. However, I would suggest taking a breather from SDN unit you've calmed down a little. That could save you from alienating anyone else, especially those who are probably most qualified to give you sound advice.

Whatever... I am glad I will be going back to school soon. Should probably go work on my EC instead of worrying about what people think about my stats.

You're stuck in your own little world thinking that we're all cocky about our scores and trying to make you jealous. You think the whole world revolves around you because us 25+ AA people can't give our opinions without having you run your dirty mouth all over the place. I think you need a break from SDN.. I've been here for 3 years and never saw a thread that mentioned this. Like I said earlier, everything is an opinion and suggestions - you can either take it or not.

I'm applying with a 19AA and I also asked for people on here for advice.

Most people (not all) here are helpful. relax and just do what you think is right.

My 25 AA is still on my signature. You only see it on the 1st post, not subsequent posts.

All that aside, if you didn't care what he was typing you wouldn't continue to argue. Who are you defending? if you weren't insecure and worried about others bashing you, you would let your stats speak for them selves and would have left a long time ago.

I hope I will be the last one to tell you this. Go and retake the DAT. If you don’t take the advice, then be prepared to answers questions during the interviews (that’s if you get any) regarding the incongruity between your GPA and DAT score.

Having a high GPA (4.0 in your case) and a low DAT scores equals a massive red flag.
What do I mean by red flag? The legitimacy and confidence placed in your application will come into questioning.

I am confident adcoms will wonder whether:
The college(s) you went to was ‘easy’ in other words the effort to earn an A is relatively effortless.

If you cheated your way (entirely or partially) through college to get high grades and therefore have a low DAT.

These are just examples.

I think YOU need to get in touch with reality.

The time you evidently wasted here on SDN prior to your DAT could have been valuable preparation time for the DAT. Before I took my DAT, I only spent about an hour every Sunday night lurking on the forums.

You need to learn some discipline if you want to be successful in dentistry and even in life.

250+ AA does not exist.

And yes the DAT is one part of the application, a very BIG part.

The dentist I shadowed regarded the entire application process as a ‘Cake Baking Contest’
Lower layer: DAT
Top layer: GPA
Icing/Decoration: EC’s, volunteer, research, etc.
Presentation: Interview
Judges: Adcoms
Prize: Acceptance

Your cake isn’t even enough to support its own weight.

I left my signature to help others. The amount of intricate details outlined in my breakdown is clearly beyond any other breakdown I’ve ever encountered (besides aqz, congrats.)

If you truly are a humble person, you don't need to show people how smart you are by putting your scores on your sig. This is a place to help people NOT contest of who is smarter. And NO I am not jealous. I have a decent DAT score paired with a great GPA. I am just pissed at these nerds. Sorry if you are one of them.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with posting such scores. In fact, I look up to some of them because they set a standard for which future pre-dental students can look up to. I want to be able to sleep at night knowing the guy who just drilled a whole in my mouth went through the most rigorous application process. It should be unacceptable to even aim for mediocrity.

Why don’t you run a simple search on SDN using keywords from your actual DAT.

I don’t show off my score. I don’t want to either. Breakdowns containing no score will always be asked “wud r ur scores” or “useless, no score, no read.”

I want to help people. This is what dentists or any other health professions are supposed to do. I’ve learned plenty through the years lurking on SDN, and finally decided to make an account in order to reciprocate. This is why I posted my scores, not to showcase, but to give people some idea on what they need to do in order to achieve such score.

I just want to point out that we're all students aiming for the same goal, to become professional dental practitioners. Let's try to act like it? Once you guys get into dental school, low PAT score or not, all the stress, worry, etc about DAT scores will go out the window. Some of you in this very thread may be sitting next to each other in lab, doing wax-ups side by side, forgetting any of this online craziness ever happened. 🙄

Also as a reminder, we do have an ignore function, if you click on a user's name, you'll find it at the bottom of a short drop-down menu. You won't have to see their opinions or their signatures. This will help a lot with preventing a chain reaction of back-and-forths, as you'll never have to feel the need to respond to something you don't agree with.

In any case, it seems to me the OP has had his question answered sufficiently, and I'm having trouble seeing this thread re-emerge into decent and civil conversation. If however you guys can do this, it will stay open. :xf:

On the flip side, at least from my personal experience, having a high PAT does very little to buffer anything else. As a stand alone it is a nice check off, but otherwise...

I was very interested in Columbia and UoP (I know, very different schools, but my example nonetheless). I hoped my 27 PAT would buffer me, maybe overshadow my 20 AA and 16 QR, but in fact it did nothing of the sort. I mention those two schools because they illustrate clearly how a PAT score is fairly unimportant or 2nd string when it comes to making sure scores are higher across the board and how important a 21 AA can be when it comes to at least landing that interview.

This is complete speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if my scores were re-arranged to a 14-16 PAT with a 21+ AA and 18+ QR, I would've had a better shot. So, I don't think a low PAT is much of a barrier.

I know of ONE girl who got in Pacific University's Optometry School with a 2.9 GPA and below average OAT. Her dad was good friends with a few of the people on the admissions committee though.
 
Well the guy got banned, I thought we had freedom of speech. I know ya gotta keep a certain level of tact and all but this is a country where I can say the most ridiculous or obscene thing I want (keeping it clean of vulgarity) and it is up to people to choose to listen to me or ignore me. Personally if someone started talkin a bunch of smack at me, I would just simply not respond but thats just me. I got way more important things going on then to waste time responding to or trying to get in trouble, someone talkin a bunch of stuff that doesnt help me in any way. I know, I know the rant was unacceptable, Im just saying I wouldnt have continued the line of conversation and moved on.
