Just a small rant

Thank you for this. I agree with what you are saying, but when that Dentist compares his/her career being ****ty compared to others, I just can't relate, not because I am not yet a Dentist ; but because that person hasn't seen anything else to compare it too.

well think of it this way, and it doesn't even have to apply to dentistry. it's always the feeling of 'i can do better'. i'm sure you've even felt that way.

it's just the mindset of a perfectionist. and in dentistry there are a lot of em

Hey, at least us "professional students" have the sophisticated language skills to use upper-case letters correctly and avoid making homophobic remarks. C'mon man!

Butt hurt doesn't imply sexual preference, at least the way I am using it. This isn't a term paper so I could care less about grammar.

I agree man, thank you for your valuable input! I apologize if I came off too harsh, I was brought up not to take any **** from people, so I always tend to be overtly defensive.

@ZMalek111 , I was in agreement that we should all be fortunate that we have a shot at this profession. Then, I saw this:

Ah I see now, you are one of these career students and that is why you are so butt-hurt. Leave your College for a bit, experience the real world and then come back and give me your BS talk.

I am not going to reply to you in a civilized manner.

Good luck in your career and life.

As someone who has spoken a lot with and has a great deal of respect for @FeralisExtremum, I have to say that you are doing him a major injustice by trying to paint him as a "butt-hurt" "career student" who talks "BS" and who has not experienced "the real world." If I had to pick the top ten people I respect the most on SDN, Feralis would undoubtedly be on that list.

Everyone here knows who Feralis is. Do you know why? Because he's a major contributor to SDN. Check out his DAT notes, or his countless posts sharing his experiences and offering his aid to ANY pre-dent who needs them. But not just that- look at his tone. Even in this thread, despite being personally attacked, he has kept a calm and mature tone. From where I'm standing, this is the kind of guy I'd want to go to dental school with, and who I wouldn't hesitate to help out in the future if he needed any support from me.

You are certainly right that we are all fortunate to have a shot at a career in dentistry, and that it is a far better life than many other options in America. That is your perspective and we should listen to it. But perhaps you should also listen to what some of the others on here are saying- people like @FeralisExtremum are going to be your future colleagues. It would be a good idea to be professional and not resort to personal attacks against them.

Yeah well I have had my fair share of politics in the workplace so your little fraternity here with Feralis doesn't concern me. He came at me sideways with negativity from the jump so I gave it to him back. I respect that he helps other students out with information regarding this field, so does that mean I have to bow down to him? I do listen to others on this thread, and tons of other Dentists and Dental Students who have given valuable advice on this website. I even mentioned that on the bottom of my rant. Go read how he replied to me, I would have listened if he didn't come at me like that.

OP, at first I agreed with much of your original post as I can relate, but dude you really crossed lines and lost all professionalism. Degrading others because and minimizing their opinions because they haven't seen the real world is not cool. I have to admit, I have done it before but only in self defense or when people are being arrogant know-it-all talking out of their butts. Let me give you an example.
A little about me: I am in my thirties and have a family. I also have 10 years in the military. You think you've seen the real world? How much of it? Where did you see this real world from? Was it from the kitchen of someone elses restaurant that you managed? Congratulations, you made a schedule and handed out coupons for free appetizers to unhappy customers.
I'VE SEEN THE REAL WORLD. I've been all over the world. I've seen real poverty and a heard levels of hatred that you didn't know even existed. You know what it sounded like? A VBIED. Here's the truth, I've seen more than you. Do you know how it feels to leave for such a long time, that your own child doesnt recognize you when you come back?
What does any of that have to do with anything? Nothing. What I've seen or experienced has nothing to do with you. Just like your restaurant management has nothing to do with any of the other folks here.
It doesn't feel so good when someone puts you down because their experiences are different than yours.
As far as the "professional students" claiming you're just jealous? They're right. Honestly, I'm jealous. I wish I had the head on my shoulders 10 years ago that these young men and women have.
Oh and regarding feralis, most of his responses are very professional throughout sdn. This is the first time I've seen him respond this way. He has directly contributed to national trends as far as dental admissions scores. He doesn't brag about it either. In fact you were the one who brought it up, not him.
No one asked for your aggressive rant, so don't act shocked that people are responding. The most ironic part is, your rant is about people being condescending, but you are the most condescending one in this thread.
You will be dealing with many different types of patients as a dentist, I encourage you to reevaluate your approach to people because you will find yourself in many difficult situations.
I wish you luck.

Why do you think I am responding the way I am? Because I am just defending myself to people who are assuming. Just like you, "handing out coupons and making schedules", see what you did there? Now you just went ahead and did the same **** as the people attacking me.If you knew anything about my life or the position you wouldn't of spoken that way. What because I didn't list my whole life story for everyone you think I haven't seen anything? My family is from India, low income family, been there hundreds of times. You haven't seen poverty unless you have seen which exists in India. I also grew up in a low income neighborhood because my parents both were uneducated and worked minimum wage jobs, this was the only place they could afford to raise their kids. This meant I was exposed to sh** most of you haven't ever seen. I am not going to have a pissing match with you in who has more life experiences or who has seen more ****. Thank you for your service to the Country. No one asked for my aggressive rant, good, why does everyone feel the need to respond then? So people can only post in this site if someone asks for it? I have gotten a few messages from people who support me in this rant of mine, they feel the same exact way. So this is a totalitarian site where I can't express myself in fear of offending contributors like Feralis and others? I mean the MODS should just delete this thread then right? You can't expect to come at me and me not retaliate, I am not going to sit here and be **** on.

Oohh, sound like you got yourself a pretty good personal statement right there.
If you're not gonna use it, Imma use it.

I think I covered on various points in my rant that people just overlook and assume things. I have NOTHING against traditional students, I think it is excellent that they found out what they wanted to be early on and accomplished it. I admire them for that, I admire them for even making it into Dental School and becoming a Dentist! I haven't even finished my undergrad yet, these people have worked hard for many years and have become Dentists. My rant was not a hit piece on them! I know that I have a while to go and I won't actually know what its like to be a practicing Dentist until I actually am one. I just feel like I am ready for it and my experience has prepared me to wither any storm that arises.

To the OP: If you feel very passionately about this topic, perhaps include this in your personal statement and discuss this during your interviews (assuming you get them and i mean no offense when saying this). An online forum for pre-dents may not be the best venue to express such opinions or get the appropriate response you are craving.

To be honest, I would only include how being a non-traditional student has shaped me into the person I am. You are absolutely right, that is IF I even get an interview. I don't want to think that ahead, and just work on what I need to now, baby steps. This was actually the perfect place to rant, and I have gotten some support for it also. I am not really craving a certain response, I just defended myself to people who came at me rude, so I dished it right back. You replied in a reasonable sense, and that is why I gave you a reasonable response. Thanks

My post was not meant to belittle you my friend nor was it to seek gratitude. I was not serious when I made the coupon jab, it was just to prove a point. It was simply meant to demonstrate how it feels to be on the other side of the fence. I don't want a p*ssing match, it's not necessary. You can go ahead and say whatever you want on this site, but so can everyone else. You can go ahead and offend people with your opinions, but they have every right to do it back. This post was a much more level-headed and thought out response. Had your initial post been in a similar tone, you likely would have not had the reactions you had.
Everyone has a bad day occasionally. You used SDN as your outlet, but that privelege extends to everyone. Your account was not randomly selected to be "**** on."
Like I said, I can relate to much of your initial post. It was just the delivery, that's all. That's why you have people agreeing, while you have others from both sides of the argument getting upset.
Just stay the course, work hard in school and on your DATs, (let's not kid ourselves, I used Feralis' notes, and if you haven't taken your exam yet, you will as well if you want to do well) and your time will come one day just like mine will come. Once in d-school, our peers can learn a lot from us and we can learn a lot from them.

And BTW, I have not been to India as of yet. But I promise you, I HAVE seen poverty.

I understand now, thank you for taking the time out to give me your input. I do believe I went a bit harsh on some responses, I just felt kind of cornered. I agree with everything you have said thus far, and I wish you the best of luck in your career brother.

Can I have some free mozzarella sticks for the troubles??

Lol I'm so sorry man, I really couldn't help it! :poke:

As some have mentioned, most of the points you brought up are arbitrary. What comes across as whining to you is a legitimate concern or frustration for someone else, even if they were "traditional" students. Whether you learned from the "school of hard knocks" or not, you'll still be facing many of the same issues that might trouble some dentists. I understand if you didn't click with the dentist you were shadowing, but to say that those who knew they wanted to be dentists right out of high school are in no position to give life advice is unfair and kind of arrogant.

Thank you for giving a nice little break from DAT studying to just LOL

hahaha I left that field to focus on my undergrad full-time but I will treat you to a beer when you graduate Dental School!

I have been reading sdn for almost half a year.

1. May- June,July: we have Muhammed who becomes the fame of SDN.
2. August-September: we have this Hammer kid who claims he just wants to go to Havard.
3. October: we have this Frank and Versace accounts who say things like this.
........miraculously, SDN achieves peace while people wait for Dec to come in November.
4. January: we have Mr. ZMalek111.

OP, how far are you in the application process?

ah, you are still completing a degree. but if your family is indeed poor, there is a very generous government financial award grant that can help you pay for undergraduate cost and there is loans. you dont have to leave education to work to survive.

so you don't know what a practicing dentist is like (im pretty sure you haven't shadowed, just assuming) yet you know you are ready for it? and your experience has prepared for what you don't know? and to wither any storm from what you don't know that may arise.

damn, God Blesses Amurica.

when do you think ISIS will have another attack on Amurica? so I can hide in a hole.

I spoke of one rant, does that qualify me into the weirdo/ass*ole hall of fame? 😀 I am still finishing undergrad.

My family was poor growing up, I am a dad of two kids and we are not poor, I have saved enough through out my career and my wife works. I became a Restaurant Manager because I thought it would fulfill me, I was wrong. I have shadowed my best friends father who is a Dentist. Once again you are assuming, and you stated that. I have the necessary emotions and dedication to wither any storm that I may face, not that I have technical skills related to be a Dentist. Oh and f*** ISIS

keep that dedication and emotions to wither storm ull face while finishing undergrad and prepping for application. cuz stuff gets hard and even professional students become lost

if you are a father of 2, you should be more mature than what your posts have been indicating. are they accidents from high school prom? thus pushes u to restaurant work and giving up on college. YES IM ASSUMING BECAUSE HOW THE HECK I KNOW YOUR LIFE

Nope just thought Restaurant Management would make a fine life. Many people I know have made it their career, no they weren't accidents, my wife is a RN. I mean how did I show immaturity? Being angry and defending myself?

"are they accidents from high school prom? thus pushes u to restaurant work and giving up on college" DAMN that is the most unapologetically straightforward and politically incorrect stereotype i've read on SDN in a while
