Kansas c/o 2015 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm an OOSer too. I felt so relieved after the application deadline, and now the stress of waiting to hear about interviews is creeping up on me. I'm like a lot of you, checking my email obsessively. :scared: LOL. Do you guys know if they usually do all the interviewing in December?

The OOS interviews are over several weekends in January, and the notifications do go out in waves. I think it's done by weekend; for example, people with interviews for the Jan 8/9 session are getting invites now, people scheduled for Jan 15/16 will hear back in the next wave, etc. Try to stay relaxed, since it might still be a few weeks before all the invites are sent. I remember how stressful it was when I'd see a new wave of invites reported on SDN and not have anything in my inbox -try to find something to do that will get you off the computer, like hiking or playing soccer or something.

does anyone know how they decide when to send out interviews?? -based on last name, when they received the supplemental, stats?

I got an interview invite yesterday for Jan. 9, my only one so far. I guess I'll be buying a suit after all. I like pizza.

I got my invite email to interview in January! So excited! Hang in there guys, they're just working their way through the pile of applications!
Just curious... what are some of the reasons you guys want to go the K State? What other schools did you apply to?

Hey guys another OOS here...I'm with you TT where are our invites...lol I can't stand sitting through class wondering if I am getting one or not...Oh well I guess I can wait. Congrats to everyone who has gotten one. I know it has been a long wait for all of us 🙂

Do you have a choice over dates, or does the email just give you a date and time you're supposed to come interview?

The e-mail just gives you a date and a time... and says that they are rescheduled in cases of extreme emergencies only.

Got an interview invite today! I had to read it twice because I thought I was imagining it.

I can't believe it is in over two months though! Jan 22nd, that's enough time to develop a generalized anxiety disorder.

Hang in there those of you that haven't gotten one. I had already convinced myself I wouldn't get an interview at a single school I applied to, but look what happened. Funny, too, it came right when I had decided I wasn't going to obsessively check the interview invite thread today so I could relax.

What airlines are people using to fly to KSU?

I got my interview invite today! just when I thought I'd have to wait 'til December to hear from them. 😛 January 23rd.

tuckervet - I'll be driving out; it's about 8 hours. Not bad.

Congrats everyone!

I'm flying Frontier into Kansas City. I didn't even look at flying into Manhattan though, so I can't help you there if that is what you were asking!

What airlines are people using to fly to KSU?

Manhattan doesn't have a major airport; they just have smaller regional airports (according to the internet), so the closest major airport is in Kansas City (approximately 100 miles away). I looked at Delta last night and for me to fly in to Kansas City on Friday morning and leave out of Kansas City Sunday morning is going to be about $150 round trip. Not too bad 😉 Also, I am flying from one side of the country (on the coast) to Kansas, so I didn't think that price was bad at all.

If I had to guess.. wouldn't it be based on your statistics.. that's what it seems like Michigan did..

I am wondering what's everyones stats that got interviews..

Congratulations to all of you interviewees! 🙂 I noticed a couple of you inquiring about flying into Manhattan. The regional airport here has one gate and the airport code is MHK. American Eagle has direct flights to and from Dallas, Kansas City, and I think they might have stopped service to/from Denver...anyways, flymhk.com would have more information.

One word of advice, though--the winter weather here can be unpredictable. I've flown into Kansas City and had to stay the night in a hotel on two separate occasions due to icy conditions on I-70 (missing class the next day, too!). I also hear that a good number of flights into/out of Manhattan are delayed/cancelled due to ice on the runway, extreme wind, etc. Just FYI...if you can swing it, best to have a day or two on either side of your travel that's clear of any super-important life-altering stuff--just in case. 🙂

Don't worry about it just yet. They're still going through and sending invites, so be patient a bit longer before freaking out and assuming you must suck.

At least that's what I'm telling myself, you know. 🙂

That's what I'm telling myself, too. We can survive these last two or three weeks, right? :scared:

No... can't, can't wait for test scores and for schools to tell me I suck (I'm perpetually down on myself. It happens.)

I have ulcers and angina now! I just need to be put down lol.

yeaaahhh i'm having a really hard time being patient for an interview invite...
does anyone know when k-state would send out rejection notices?
haha i think i've lost hope :scared:

Ugh I'm the same way! I wish they would start sending out rejections and interviews at the same time, that way if I didn't get an interview and got a rejection at least I could stop checking my email like 100 times a day.

I think Kansas has an interview waitlist too. Last year, they overaccepted by, like, a lot. They'll be more careful this year, perhaps. The year before last, the was at least one interview waitlister that interviewed late and then was accepted after that (spyisis).

So, um... sorry, but it gets more complicated. :d

Quick paranoid question for those of you who got interview invites already... I RSVPed by e-mail and didn't hear back. So now I have convinced myself that they didn't get my e-mail and that I should call. Not that there was any reason for them to write back really except to confirm my RSVP... did anyone hear back, or am I just falling off the deep end here?

She did send me an email back after I RSVPed, so you might want to call. Even if you just say that you were unsure your email got to them and you wanted to make sure they know you will be there.

Hope this helps. I would be paranoid too. This is our future we're talking about! 🙂

Ok, thanks! I shall start stressing..... now! It is really annoying that it is so hard for me to make phone calls (especially long distance) during normal business hours.

But thank you for the info!

Thanks alliecat44! I will probably fly in at least a day earlier than I originally planned now. Good advice!

I was just wondering if any other girls that have interviews on Jan. 9th would be interested in splitting a hotel room. The email said that was going to be $85-$110 per night so, anything we can do to save a little money would be good. I know there is always the fear of random roommates, all of us college students know that, but it might be nice to have company. Someone who is in the same boat to talk you down when you're climbing the walls from pre-interview jitters.
Just a thought. Let me know if you are interested!

Speaking of hotel rooms, book early! I ran into that problem when I interviewed there last year. There was all the vet school interviews and a home basketball game and I ended up having to stay in Junction City which wasn't a bad drive, just a little inconvenient.

Congrats to everyone who has gotten an interview invite - make sure you do your best and knock um dead. To everyone still waiting (me included😀) don't start stressing yet. This application year just got started and there is still plenty of time to get an interview invite from any college.

I received an e-mail back after I RSVPed, so I agree you might want to follow up. If calling is inconvenient, you can forward your original message and say that you have been having some problems with your e-mail and you want to confirm it was received.

How did you find out that tidbit? The only numbers I can find are from 3 cycles ago.

Just by being around here. The Kansas waitlist didn't move much as a result... but it was mostly based on a post of class stats that already showed a larger-than-average class without calling many waitlisters, but that may have just been the impression we got. I swear there was a thread that went into it more, but I kinda have an exam tomorrow that I should be studying for. :d

Here's a thread about the 'interview waitlist':

And heres a point where someone originally rejected got to interview (c/o 2012):

Thanks for the link! Looks like we still have some more waiting ahead...I wish I could fast forward in time to February

Yeah, I e-mailed her again (and admitted I was paranoid and wanted to make sure) and heard back that I am confirmed. Not sure if I was confirmed after the first e-mail or the second, but either way, I'm all set!

I have family in KC and will actually be there next week, so I plan on taking a trip out to Manhattan to get a feel for the town (since I will end up not being in town very long around the actual interview). This is getting so real!

Fingers crossed for everyone still waiting for an interview, and good luck at interviews everyone!

Does anyone that has had an interview at Kansas know if it would be better to rely on the shuttle service that KSU provides or to rent a car? What is everyone else planning on doing?

I have an interview in January, and since I will be flying out by myself, I will most likely be relying on the shuttle since I cannot rent a car (I'm under 25 🙁). Not ideal, but I guess it will work and I'll just allow for a lot of time in case something goes wrong.

I'm under 25 too which is why I was thinking of using the shuttle service. But I just checked Enterprise and it'll cost $25 more in total to rent a car (for 2 days) since I'm between 21 and 24. Idk if it's worth it though...

You can still rent a car! You may have to pay an underage fee, but as long as you have an ID/credit card, you shouldn't have any problems! I rented cars in five different states for interviews/visiting the schools, and I was only 22 at the time. Some states and companies charge differently for underage, so just look around. I had good luck with Enterprise in most places, and in a few places, didn't even have to pay the underage fees since I was there for a professional school interview. (Iowa comes to mind, can't remember where else)

I went to KSU last year for an interview, and the shuttle service was great. They didn't say anything about it before the weekend, so i was planning on taking a taxi from the MHK airport to the hotel, but when I got there, there was a student waiting to give people rides. when he dropped me off at the hotel he told me what time he'd be back for the pizza party, then they were coming around at regular intervals the next day for interviews. there was also a number you could call when you needed a ride. i don't know if it will be the same this year, but it was very convenient and reliable last year. it was also extra time to be asking students about the school!

I'm only 20 though, and everywhere I have found has required that you be at least 21 🙁

I know there are others that got around this last year! See if anyone responds about it here, and if not, you might want to post a new thread about it. 🙂

I'm not too pleased about my age generally, but at least I can rent a damn car without anyone making a big stink.

See if someone on this board is flying in at the same time as you and is older :-D Or just hang out near the rental counters and eavesdrop on the people renting cars until you find someone heading to the college. I know about 6 people on my flight were going the same place I was!

Or, try different locations-- IE, take a taxi to an Avis or Hertz in town, dont use the one through the airport. I know sometimes if you explain that you are there for a professional school interview, they might be able to work with you.

Good idea, cowgirla. My interview is on 1/22, and I'll probably be arriving on Friday (the 21st) around lunchtime. Anyone else going to be there around that time?

My interview is on 1/22 as well. I was going to try to give myself an extra day of padding in case of bad weather and fly in on Thursday, but nothing is final yet. I will let you know hunterjumper via PM once I get things finalized.

I'm feeling like I should book my flight soon, but I can't decide on which airport to fly into. Right now I'm wondering if flying into Manhattan and relying on shuttles would be less expensive then flying into a major airport two hours away and renting a car. However, I also suspect that the smaller airport would be more susceptible to closure in case of bad weather.

I've read that other people are thinking of flying into Kansas City because it's less expensive. But at least for me it's literally the same price to fly into Kansas City and Manhattan.

I was debating going a day early as well because I'm afraid of the weather. The flight on Friday gets in around noon (my interview is Saturday) and I was already wondering what I was going to do with myself all day on Friday so I can't even imagine arriving on Thursday instead. I'll be bored out of my mind!

Oh, I was looking at Wichita vs. Kansas City, too. But now that I look at KSU's website about the airports and such, Kansas City is a bigger airport that Wichita. http://consider.k-state.edu/transportation/

I was thinking the same thing! Maybe see a movie to get my mind off things. Driving out of town to see what's beyond the city.

On the subject of rental cars, if any of you have USAA as your insurer, if you rent a car through their website (Avis, Budget, and Dollar I think) you get a discount and they waive the underage fee for those of us under 25. If any of you are USAA members, I've found that Budget usually has the cheapest cars and the best service of the three companies that USAA is associated with.

Well if you think there is a possibility at all that you might be living there, might be fun to check out the town a bit 🙂 espeically if you get more than one acceptance then you would know which town you would be more comfortable with. The weather was really bad when I went last year but I remember somewhere on the forum people talking about parks just outside of town that were neat and I know they have a lake and a zoo. Probably a lot more...I just can't rmember 🙂

GOOD LUCK everyone!

When I was visitng KSU, I always stayed at the Motel 6 on Tuttle Creek Road - it's clean, only about 2 miles to campus, and is generally around $40. But yeah, definitely want to book early - if it is a game weekend, likely all the motel rooms in town will be full.

I highly recommend getting a rental car and allowing at least a day or two extra. Yeah, it might cost more, but in the grand scheme of things considering you might be spending the most important 4 years of your life here, it's a worthwhile investment. The car will let you explore the area, check out possible places to live, and just relieve you of the worry about how you will get around.

It might seem premature, but check out some of the housing listings and see what neighborhoods are like and what places cost. It's good to start getting an idea about that stuff now so you won't have to be scrambling so much later.

Oh, and re interview stress... seriously, don't go getting all insane about it. KSU is known for having among the least stressful interviews. Do your normal preparation - know your PS, why you want to be a vet, the basic ethical stuff, rights vs. welfare, etc. - all the standard stuff you find on interview question lists. But they will not be "grilling" you or trying to make you cry or test your biochem knowledge or anything. Mine seemed really more like just a pleasant conversation. I think we went like 10 minutes beyond our alloted time (I was the last interview slot of the day) and I felt like I could have easily chatted with these people for another hour. Just relax. If you made it this far, you're qualified, so they really just want to make sure you aren't a freak and see how you will fit in with others. I know it's hard not to freak a little, but don't go crazy.

That post just made me feel sooooo much better! Thank you!

A quick question for you though, the email for the interview said that students will be giving the tours of the school. Do you remember when those tours were? Is it a giant group tour for everyone interviewing that day? Or do you just tour after your interview?

Thanks again!
