KCUMB Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are any of you who are accepted missing any of the requirements for KCUMB? If so, how are you going about meeting them?

I am really concerned about this because I'm missing both genetics and biochem. I took a couple of classes that had components of genetics and biochem in them, and I wonder if I might be able to have them meet the requirements. I wonder how lenient they are about acceping substitutions. I was reading in the secondary that to request a class fulfill the requirements they require: "A faculty letter detailing course content, a copy of course description from the school catalog, or a copy of the actual course syllabus. The method providing the most detail will produce the most accurate assessment. For
Biochemistry, the information should indicate the applicant has studied intermediary metabolism or specifically lipid metabolism. For Genetics, the information
submitted should indicate the course covered Mendelian Genetics/Inheritance or hereditary factors. Applicants will be notified of decisions upon review of course content. Note: If a request to substitute a course is granted, the substituted course will not be counted toward the fulfillment of any other prerequisite." I took a intro biology course that had genetics in it and a combined environmental biochem and analytical chemistry class.

I am teaching at a community college and working my usual job full-time next semester and possibly some of the summer, too, so I'm worried about having the opportunity to take these classes if I'm required to.

Does anyone know of places you can take genetics or biochem courses online through a university? My ugrad doesn't offer these online but I thought another school might...

id say to do what you need to do right away, meaning this week.. ask your professors for that letter now if they need to write one... call the school and ask now.. that way, if you need to take a course, u can with a semester still left.

Hi all,

I was wondering if any one who has already interview or attends KCUMB can tell me more than the website about the Spirituality in Medicine program/class/concentration? I am very interested in blending Christianity and my future medical practice so I am drawn to any program that offers such interest in spirituality, but at the same time I don't know much about it and was wondering what religion they mean when they say "spirituality?"

I don't have an interview there yet, they told me Wednesday that my application was going to be reviewed on Thursday and I should hear something within a few days. I'd love to interview there and would love to have more understanding on this topic to ask intelligent questions while there.

Thanks and Congratss to all already accepted!!!

Part of KCUMB's curriculum is a series of lectures, seminars, and small group discussions on a diverse range of topics. Stuff like professional ethics, cultural sensitivity, spirituality in medicine, end of life care, etc. All of that gets lumped together as one complete "cultural competency" program.

The spirituality aspects are religion-neutral, meaning that they try not to do anything that suggests one religion is the correct one. Faculty often does however use specific religions as examples to make points or as springboards for discussions. The school tries not to schedule major exams on religious holidays, and works very hard to accommodate all of them. I don't know if they are 100% successful, but they do make a big effort. On the whole, the spirituality portion of the series is probably not the largest as far as time spent. Topics on medical ethics, end of life care, organ donation/reception etc. have taken more time... that's simply because the series covers a dozen topics or so, and spirituality is just one part of that.

More specifically, the spirituality seminars have focused on the benefit to both patient and doctor of having some sort of spiritual centering, whether religious in nature or not. If agnostic or atheist, students are reminded that being spiritual may be as simple as being a little selfish and considering your own emotional and psychological well being on a regular basis, and making concerted efforts to promote your own spiritual health. You don't want physicians of any religion jumping off of buildings due to stress or depression, and that's the primary point.

I do not know whether there is a specific emphasis on spirituality in medicine that can be obtained. If you found that on their website, it is quite possible. I'll see if I can find out more information. Last year a "certificate of ethics" was offered to students who voluntarily attended a minimum number of additional seminars on medical ethics. The school is also now offering a dual degree program that leads to a master's degree in bioethics. There may be other options.

You would find KCUMB on a whole very cognizant and welcoming of a variety of religious and cultural values. One of the faculty does most of his research in exploring the merits of alternative medicine techniques.

And since you mentioned Christianity specifically, I would venture to say that while the school obviously supports no one religion over another, this is the US and the law of statistics would lead one to conclude that the majority of religious students, faculty, and administration would be Christian. The pathologist (who is quite well known) is Christian, but will just as quickly call out bad religion as he will bad science. His website is complete with many interesting asides on the border between the two, and what religion's role in modern culture, science, and medicine might be.

I have no idea if that answered any of your questions, but it's late and my neurons not organizing properly.

Osli: do you know what kind of testing is done for third/fourth year clerkships? Is it after each clearkship, or in batches similar to some schools?

I'm not very informed about rotations testing because I have always just figured "it will be however it is" and that I'd deal with it. I'm pretty sure that there is an online test after each rotation block covering that specialty. Past that, I do not know any other details. I don't think there are any tests administered by preceptors (I believe all graded "tests" are standardized among all students and thus supplied by the school), but I don't know if/when smaller quizzes etc. might occur. I have assumed that the online final + preceptor evaluation is probably the vast majority of the grade for a rotation.

I'll see if I can get clarification on this.

Hey Osli or Spiced, or another KCUMB & SDN regular, how is Weaver Auditorium coming along? When will it be finished?

Pretty worthless answer here... it's coming along nicely and I have no idea when it will be finished. 🙂

They keep the area secured from casual passers-by, and I haven't asked administration lately for an update. From a distance, it looks like they have shifted to a lot of the outside landscaping/parking/etc. work, so the inside is likely nearly done. A month ago for the grand opening I took several alumni on tours, and the interior was probably 75% completed. My understanding is that the graduations in the spring will be the first official events held at Weaver, but who knows between now and then when they will declare it "finished."

Yeah, sounds about right to me. I had a chance to view the inside and it looks like it's nearing completion; it looks pretty good. On the exterior, it still looks like a construction site. If I happen to get a chance to talk with anyone in the administration on such matters, I'll enquire about it.

Thanks for the updates. Its still more than I knew LOL. I heard the interior of the place is supposed to be amazing.

Pretty swanky. I think it will be a really nice complex when they eventually get the library and student rec/study facilities added to the auditorium.

I'm trying to get people to donate money so I can get my name put on a plaque on the back of a seat in the auditorium. I asked if we could split the cost like 30-ways and have our names engraved really small, but apparently that won't work.

at our interview on 9/25 they actually told us it will be ready in 3 months, so assume itll be ready for next semester.

Yeah I knew it would be. Since I live pretty close though and I am accepted, I was hoping to have a look at it before the white coating next fall.

what do they plan on using the auditorium for?

It will be used for white coating and graduation (for COM and COB) ceremonies. I'm sure they'll find other uses for it as well. Part of KCUMB's mission is to revitalize the surrounding community - the school made a decision many years back to NOT relocate to a less impoverished community. I'm sure the school will take advantage of having a nice auditorium in many ways that include allowing other city functions to be held there.

Eh, that didn't really make much sense. I'm not sure of a better way to say it, so I'll just let it stand.

i gotcha, other KC functions will be held there if the school gets its wish

Got a KU Med interview. Most likely wont even go to the interview. But it is a nice feeling to get it.

Thanks for the long response Osli! That helps.

I found out yesterday that "I am qualified but not invited yet for an interview. They will review my application every month until the end of the application cycle in April-ish." I was a little sad but it's okay. I'm interviewing in Kirksville on 1 Nov so I am thinking that I might pay the extra $30 to fly in KC instead of St Louis and just drive around or park and walk around campus. That way, if I get accepted elsewhere, I will have at least been on campus to get a feel for it.

If you'd like an informal guided tour of the campus/facilities, shoot me a PM and I'll see if I or one of the other ambassadors can arrange that.

I don't know if this is in the appropriate thread, if not, I apologize. I have had some things come up that have prevented me from applying this round yet. Do you think it is too late to apply to KCUMB? I know they do admissions on a rolling basis but I had heard you were relatively safe applying a little later (before December). My stats are pretty good, 3.5 science GPA, 3.61 overall w/ 32 on MCAT. Any thoughts?

I don't think that it is too late to apply, but the sooner you get your secondary in, the better. All else being equal, the chance of acceptance goes down as the cycle progresses, as they continue to fill up seats.

You do have good stats though, so I think you have a great shot. But, take my opinion for what it's worth because I'm a lowly applicant too... 😉

Thanks for the quick reply. If anyone else has had any experience with this sort of time line please let me know. Good luck to everyone!

Hi, I have a question to those who already interviewed. Were you were given a few dates to chose from? Also, how far is Kansas City from Kirksville? According to mapqest.com, it is about a 3-hour drive. How do you go from one place to another? Drive, take a plane, take a bus (if there is any)? Also, I hears that KCUMB interviews on Wednesdays. Is it true?
Thank you.

I was a late (December/January) applicant, but that was two years ago. Number of applications has seemed to really skyrocket everywhere this year, plus KCUMB is trying to schedule more fall interviews and finish much earlier in the year.

You are still in the date range where interviews and acceptances are being handed out, but I must advise you that the clock is ticking faster than ever before. I'd get your application complete ASAP to make sure you get an interview before Christmas. You have good stats, and if the rest of your application looks good you would likely be a strong candidate, so being a little late won't hurt you too much. Being real late might put you in that "we'd love to have you... how about an '09 start?" group.

No idea about Kirksville... have never driven or flown there. I don't think it is that far... 3 hours sounds about right. No idea about bus routes, or airport situation in Kirksville.

Interview days seem to vary. Some are Monday. Wednesday seems like a popular day, and I think some are on Thursdays. Last year there were several on Tuesdays, but none I can recall so far this year.

I interviewed on Tuesday this year. ALL of my interviews were on tuesdays. LOL. 😎

I just talked to admissions and they said I got an interview!!! The only problem is that she said it was on November 8, the same day I have one scheduled at KCOM. For those of you who have already interviewed, did you get to pick from a couple of dates, or did they just give you one?

I got a pre-application interview invite, but it was also for just one day. I am sure they will work with you if you have other commitments.

I am interviewing at KCUMB in a week!!!! What can I expect?? Is it an open or blind interview??

See the interview feedback on SDN for more information but it is an open interview. Mine was with an alum and a professor. It was very laid-back and conversational. I wouldn't stress out too much about this one -- they reassured us all day that it would be laid-back and it was. I think that they just want to get to know you better and don't intend to drill.

Good luck! 🙂 It's a great school!

I interview there on Monday!!! What can I expect as far as the interview itself goes.. open or closed file? Laid back or hot seat???

Any info will help..

thanksss

Open interview, two interviewers, typically at least one faculty member and the other can be faculty, administration, alumni, area physician, board member, whatever. May be laid back or "hot seat" depending on who is asking the questions, but in either case the purpose is to gage your personality, maturity, and composure. If they ask a tough question they don't care if you give the "right" answer so much as long as you handle the situation well. Talk freely and openly about yourself. Appear confident and comfortable yet humble, appreciative, and respectful.

I guess that should apply to any interview, right? 🙂

Has anyone interviewed both here AND western?

i got accepted to KCUMB and have a western interview in 2 1/2 weeks and im really close to cancelling the flight because of how much i liked KC, i dont wanna wonder what if, but from everything ive read, people seemed to like their visit at kcumb better. Its expensive for me to travel out to CA and I dont wanna go unless people who have been to both places tell me I should, i could use that money elsewhere.

Well, I interviewed at both last year. I can't tell you whether you should or shouldn't go, because that's a personal decision. However, I can tell you that it didn't sway me one bit, but I enjoyed a short vacation in SoCal. I came into the interview at COMP thinking that I was going to attend KCUMB and I left thinking the same.

I am a fan of going on interviews not for any reason other than the more you go, the more you learn about what questions you should be asking and what things you need to look for. It is expensive, inconvenient, and SDN is a great tool, but nothing beats the third years who stop by at lunch to tell you what they don't like about the school unannounced(which you have to take with a grain of salt). Having said that, if you don't see yourself going somewhere because of pure geography or some other fixed reason, then yes, by all means save yourself the trip. It all depends on you. Good luck!

hi... for those of you who have interviewed at KCUMB.. what are some qualities of the school that are distinguished that I can research to talk about in the interview.. in other words.. when they ask me why kcumb? what can i mention other than what I have enjoyed during the day of the interview.

thanks

If you look at the school website, there is basically a section that directly asks the question you are asking and then provides some salient answers to it. Take a closer look. Often, the most cited point is the curriculum, called Genesis. Another thing that comes to mind is their commitment to service (e.g., Score 1 For Health). Also, their treatment and integration of spirituality in medicine into the curriculum. Anyway, it's all covered on their website and at the interview you'll hear about several distinguishing points.

A simple line of responding would recall that the school is old, has a ton of alumni, is the largest and oldest medical school in MO, etc.

Older than KCOM?

I always get that backwards. I think what I've heard applies to KC, not MO or KS. Sorry, and I should probably double check my "facts" before posting.

No big deal I just wanted to make sure I didn't have it wrong.

anybody got any numbers as to what number get interviewed and what number get accepted at kcumb?

Is anyone interviewing on Nov 6th? I just booked my tickets and car rental. Waiting for student host. Let me know; maybe we can hang out on monday.

3.5 and 27R and from Cali if ur wondering mahilladoctor.

Hey all...KCUMB MS-1 here. In the middle of musculoskeletal.

Congrats on acceptances...you all will LOVE the school. Great professors and curriculum. This school has an awesome reputation around here.

We just had a physician panel and the surgery resident director from University of Kansas School of Medicine (MD) was on it and said that he just had 4 KCUMB students rotate through his surgical program and that they did AWESOME.

We got grads all over the place doing amazing things.

We're being taught by top notch professors in great facilities.

It's HARD HARD HARD work so be prepared to study all day, everyday, and twice on sunday.

If you are truly in it for the right reasons...studying will be fun.

CONGRATS!

Hey guys I interview in the morning.. 10/22 and I cannot remember for the life of me where the little pre meeting coffee/breakfast thing is held. I know we meet in the alumni center at 9, but I registered with my wife to come to the early breakfast at 815 or 830. I can probably just ask someone in the morning, but I'd like to know ahead of time if possible...

If it is the same as last year, the breakfast meeting is at the lounge area of the Butterworth Alumni Center. Just walk into the Alumni Center, it's hard to miss; the lounge area has round tables and a very small kitchen in the back. There will probably be some signs. Again, this is what I recall from last year.

Thanks Spiced!!.. This trip has really sucked so far. Got into KC and after about 20 mins some guy runs a stop light and hits our car, then peels out into the sunset, (guessing no insurance), then got aggravated and went to the casino.. 🙂 Either way I'm pumped about the morning. Really appreciate all the help!!!

Well the interview is over and I have a sense of relief. Mine was fairly informal and relaxed, but there were a couple of people who had kinda of rough interviews. I had a Biochemistry prof and a Dr. Kolo. Both of which were exremely nice and easy to talk to. I did have a hard time trying to get a reaction out of both, but never felt uncomfortable. As with most that have interviewed there I really enjoyed the campus, students, and faculty. I could definitely see myself attending there. We are supposed to be informed by Nov 9th.
