I'm in SF, so the flight will be super cheap and fast. I will need a car, but I don't want to drive, so maybe I'll just rent one. Okay, so now I think I will go.
 
Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to the second visit day. You guys will have to report back here on how it goes.

BTW, did anyone ever suggest what parking structure to try to get? There are also all sorts of different types of permits (Cardinal, gold...) not sure what it is we need, exactly.
 
Snowey, you know it would be cheaper for you to rent a car and drive down if you have unlimited miles.

True, but I don't really want to drive and I would just take my car if I was going to drive--although renting a Tahoe would be tight. I am not sure how I am getting down yet, but I am coming!

So, do I get to meet the famous Jalby at the reception, are you going to be there?

A lot of car rental places rent cars per day and give you unlimited miles. I bet it's actually super profitable for them because most people don't drive rental cars around a lot while they have them and you have to return the car to the same place where you pick it up.

So Kevin, are you going to join our class?

Nope.

I'm thinking of renting a car to drive down to San Diego for the second look there so I can look at housing and stuff too, although its probably too early to do that.
 
On a somewhat related note to renting cars, has anyone here ever rented a u-haul attachment thingie ???- I'm not sure what they're technically called but I've seen them on the freeway. It looks like a gigantic box that gets hooked onto the back of your car, somehow.

I'm thinking of getting one of those to move from Norcal to LA next month but would a Toyota Camry be able to handle that?

Oh and does one need to be 25 to rent those, too? Cause then, I'm screwed.

I've rented a Uhaul before, the 25 thing is only for the rental cars as far as I know.

I wanted to rent a trailer last year when I moved to SF, but my dad said not to. He said that it's bad for cars (easier for trucks) and difficult to drive/park with. Maybe call a U-haul place, tell them what kind of car you have and ask their opinion (my dad can be overly cautious about cars 😉 )

I'd tend to agree with Snowbear's dad. I don't think it would be that good to attach a U-haul trailor to a camry. It may be technically permissible, but still not good for the car and definitely a pain to drive with. If I were coming from SF, I'd rent a U-haul truck and have someone else drive my car down at the same time. In a worst case scenario, I'd just make the two separate trips.
 
Thanks guys, for the advice. I've never seen a regular sedan pull one of those u-haul things either.

I guess it'll have to be two trips to LA... unless I get my friend to drive the truck!

oh well... better than moving to LA then moving cross country. Thank goodness USC is in LA!!!

Southwest doesn't appear to have flights early enough the morning of April 23rd, so I'm thinking I'll fly down from SF the evening of the 22nd. I stayed at the Days Inn the night before my interview and that was fine but I'm open to other suggestions.

I thought that I saw one leaving from Oakland and arriving at LAX at 7:15am. Are you leaving from SJ, or want to get there earlier?

Check out priceline. For my interview I did priceline a couple of weeks before my interview and I ended up staying in a really nice hotel for $40/night.

Hope that your Springtime is going well and that all your plans for attending medical school are falling in place. This is an exciting time. In addition to sending warm wishes, I wanted to let you know about a series that will be airing on television starting this coming weekend, April 4th. The Discovery Health Channel and USC partnered in the project in which documentary crews taped doctors, staff, students and patients at the Keck School of Medicine and affiliated hospitals. The series will run for six weeks on Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.



Stories cover a variety of subjects including heart and liver transplants, cancer research, children?s cancers and surgery, trauma and burn surgeons, the life of a first year medical student and more. The first story highlights a live-donor liver transplant with surgeons Rick Selby and Nicolas Jabbour, trauma surgeon Juan Asensio and his efforts to save a battered homeless woman and a segment with cancer surgeon Melvin Silverstein as he helps a woman deal with her breast cancer.



Each episode features approximately three to four stories with a total of 21 separate stories condensed into six, one hour episodes.



I hope that this series gives you a sense of who we are at USC and the physician that you will become through training at the Keck School of Medicine.

Yeah, it's weird, I keep seeing great things in the news about Keck, unlike some other medical schools *cough* UCLA *cough*.

It's all good, I got nothin but love for my alma mater.

Hey, way to make me feel bad about withdrawing from USC Monday... I still browse this thread because I haven't quite let it go. I still got the email, too. *sigh* I feel so bad after withdrawing an acceptance, like I didn't appreciate its full value even if I feel like it's the right decision for me. You guys will be going to an awesome place!

Look at it this way. Even though you might be sad about it and be regretting it for the rest of your life, you just allowed someone like Camstah to live a great and complete life.

Yes, I totally agree. Camstah should be accepted given how much she is excited about USC. I think enthusiasm should be accounted for in the admissions process. If I were them, I'd be less willing to accept a less enthusiastic candidate, with all other factors being equal, of course...
 
That's definately something I factor in when I'm doing an interview.

Has anyone received their financial aid information from USC yet? Someone told me that USC rarely awards any need-based grant money at all...is this true? How are you all planning to afford USC?

Oh, and BTW, was anyone else tempted to "Reply All" on that e-mail about the TV show?? Just to give a shout-out to all our future classmates... 😀
 
hey does anyone know if you can bring a guest to the accepted student reception? i am guessing probably not since it seems to be a pretty well-organized day...
i am trying to convince my boyfriend to move with me to LA if i go to USC... (he grew up in San Diego and has been adamantly against moving there... anywhere but LA he tells me...) i thought that if i brought him with me and got him to take a look around and check the place out he might soften up a little bit...
as time goes on the more excited i am getting about going to usc... its a tough decision though... especially if i have to leave him behind...

You got the financial aid application forms in the mail, right? Supplemental form, Parent Assett form, etc.? I turned those in but I haven't heard anything back yet.

When I saw that email yesterday from USC in my inbox I was all, "Please let it be a scholarsip, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE." But it turned out to be pretty cool anywho. A scholarship to USC would be like my dream. Please give me some money, USC. The only thing I am scared of is that they won't give me a lot of financial aid because of my dad's assetts.

Yeah, I got those and turned 'em all in. Just waiting to hear what sort of aid I get. I am just scared about the no-grant stuff. I sort of wish I hadn't withdrawn my other (cheaper) acceptances already. 🙁

I feel your pain about your boyfriend. My boyfriend is going to come with me to LA, but he's not too excited about it; he likes Northern Cali a lot more and he has family and a job here. He didn't know for a while if he was going to come and it was really difficult on me.

Are you definately coming to USC? SD-LA isn't that far. My friend who went to UCLA med drove to SD a lot 'cause he had a lot of friends there. But I understand that it would still not be easy.

Definately call and ask about the reception. I am trying to get my bf to come down with me and look at areas while I am down there, and it would be cool for him to see the school. Some parts of the day may be more receptive to visitors than others, ie the speaker parts, but not so much for the shadowing parts. I'll let you know if I find out anything.
 
i am still waiting to hear from uc davis... but i really think that usc maybe a better fit for me... i got a great feeling while i was there and i think i would love it... especially the clinical experience you get...
my roommate from college is a nurse in LA and she was saying that at her hospital the USC students were very hands on and had a lot of independence... and not by any means to bash on UCLA... cause i have no clue... but from her perspective the UCLA students always had to check in and had people looking over their shoulders... overall she said that the USC students were really confident and capable... she thought it was impressive... especially compared with some of the residents she used to deal with in boston...
but still i am intimidated by the price... we'll see how the financial aid plays out...
i will definitely try to give them a call about the reception on monday...

Well, it looks like I am going to be going to USC! No one seems to reply to my posts or questions...I guess they're just not interesting. Maybe I should make some outlandish racial remark to get some responses....

i don't think it listed an rsvp on the evite... but i'd imagine that as soon as you know that you are going let them know so that they can match you up with the people in the departments you're interested in...
 
Along those lines of bringing people to the reception, would it be kind of weird if I brought my parents? What do you guys think?

My parents are so hyped about USC that I think it would break their hearts if I left them at home that day... 🙁

I'm the one who has a mom who has been wearing a USC hat eversince mid February when I got accepted. And she's not a hat person, either...
 
there was a thread earlier about second looks that cautioned about bringing parents. but im not sure about this reception.
 
Personally, I'd try to not bring the family along. I dunno, though, maybe I'm just a bad son...

Sorry to hear about significant others who are not so hyped about LA. Having lived in NorCal for 5 years or so, I really miss SoCal.

But I've come across some NorCal folks who are prejudiced against the "superficialness" of LA. I suppose one could also criticize parts of SF for being too "granola" for that matter. The argument continues on and on...

where is mason park? camstah, are you persian? i have a lot of persian friends and it does appear that AID is persian.
 
yeah, i'm persian, but i don't really have many persian friends...okay, i have like one to be honest....i just don't fit in with them for some reason.....i dont' tend to stick to one ethnic group, so if you look at my really close friends (i.e. the ones i always hang out with) they are a bunch of different ethnicities...my closest closest friend is korean....i don't know many persians that are like that, so i guess that's why i don't really fit in well with them.....
or maybe i just haven't met the right persians?

To all those non persians out there Eid is the persian new years (norouz), which was last saturday. On the 13th day of the new year its tradition that alot of people go outside the home on a day trip to get rid of the bad spirits, and come back to their house having left the bad spirits behind (13 is an unlucky number), mason park is where alot the persians this year are going from the bay area.

I know what you mean camstah, no one should limit their friends to a certain ethnicity, especially us californians who have the oppurtunity of being around so many wonderfully diverse ethnic groups (sorry midwesterners 😛)

Btw camstah have u interviewed at USC yet, have they gotten back to you? Good luck in the whole process.
 
i think y'all should start a persian thread in the pre-allo forum. it would be cool to see how many people out there are persian and you guys can share stories. ill jump in to and tell you bout my friends who are persian and premed. it would be cool.

No, I'm not perisan, but like docmemi, I have tons of persian friends. It just happens so that my best friend at UCI is a persian as well. I was invited to go to Mason Park and I might. I'm always up for new cultural experiences. One thing I will never figure out is the fish in the bowl thing...:laugh:

I know it sounds kindda cruel but one of the reasons persians keep fish is so that if anything is gonna happen to one of the family members in the coming year it'll instead happen to the fish. So instead of you getting a heartattack and dying, the fish does. :hardy:
