Suits/suit jackets - in the hospitals, only the consultants/attendings/staff wear jackets (and some arrogant registrars as well 🙄 ).

Bring dress slacks/khakis/nice non-jean trousers, dress shirts, ties for the times you spend in the hospitals - not sure of the curricula now for the first year Irish schools, but it seems more apparent that they are including more hospital days earlier in your education now. Long labcoats in the hospital.

Girls reading this, watch the dresscode - it has been very apparent over the past few years (at least at St. Vincent's Hospital) that women are wearing more provocative clothing (eg high heels, above knee skirts, low cut blouses). This trend has been commented on by staff, other doctors AND patients as being very unprofessional. This statement does not necessarily reflect my own opinion, however, it is something that is most surely to be brought up if it happens in your year.

BTW, if you like to socialize, each of the major hospitals have Hospital Balls - blacktie/tuxedo, and also med balls (also BT/T). Maybe a good idea to invest in a cheap tux and use it over the 5-6 years you are there - well worth the money compared to renting each year at chainstores like "Black Tie".

Maybe at the Med or Hospital balls, the short skirts can then be worn 😀 .

thakns for the reply pattycanuck!

So... really... i do need a tux more so than a suit?

thanks!

No worries.
Luxury of being a guy - you can wear this outfit for many, many years and it wont go out of style.

BTW, there are many of the Irish in your class that will be celebrating their "21sts" and a good number of them are "upper-class" (ie loaded mummy and daddy) and will have very extravagant parties - hence some of them may have blacktie affairs.

21sts thus are around your third year there if mathematics elude you right now 😛 😀

In my 3rd year, I'll be 26. Jesus.

26 isn't that old when I think of the age of a lot of my class. I'll be 19 in third med tho, for the entire year! I get my birthday smack bang in the middle of the end of year exams! Lucky me 😱

bring a suit or tux for medball......and don't bitch about your age at 26......it's pretty ridiculous considering there are people (like me) who are older than you......age is a state of mind remember....no one likes hearing people who aren't old complain about being old......get over it

Yes, no bitching about age. I know at least two people on this forum who are in med school and on the wrong side of 40, so al you young pups shut up about how old you are😀

 Yeah, sometimes I wish I had gone straight from high school to med school...but in the end, no regrets, it's been an interesting journey.

As bk25 has stated, "age is a state of mind" - go over there with an open mind - both medicine, social and (hard to believe) also the administration of things there. Allow yourself to enjoy the Irish life ... you may realize a few things on the way and also make your time there more enjoyable.

BTW, from what I heard from many of my classmates, many interviews conducted in both the US and Canada for residencies always included the "why Ireland" classic question ... so might as well live a part of it so you can really show your appreciation of your time there. Likewise, saying nothing positive about a place will get you NOWHERE with ANY program ... again justifying finding something (ie examples) of how things are like there! 🙂 For me this question was always posed and for half of them comprised of half of my interview time!

Whoa there skipper. Relax a little. I wasn't "bitching about my age". I was just stating a fact. There's nothing for me to "get over".

skipper? i don't own a boat. i'm quite relaxed. just stating a fact....you won't win many friends saying ridiculous things that suggest you feel old at 26.....if you do, that's just insane.....26 is young....seize the day

It is a bit silly, considering you might even consider med school to be the beginning of a career (even though you're shelling out the cash instead of making it). Like... oh my gosh... after my first 20 years of medical practice I'll be 49... how old!

Once again, I wasn't trying to complain about my age. I was just saying how old I'd be. The "jesus" was more about being in class with people mostly 3-4 years younger than me. I only feel old when I've been up for 36 hours, and I can barely climb the steps.

Anyway, boats are fun. My parents have one, but I haven't been able to go down there much lately thanks to work. Oh, well.

Sorry, but I don't consider shelling out 350 grand the "beginning of a career". When I start residency, I'll be more inclined to say my career is starting. Med school is more like the pre-career warm up.

bring a suit. You never know when you'll need one 😉. You won't need one for every day wear in the hospital, but there may be more formal professional occassions when you'd want the suit jacket. You'll definitely need it for your exams in final year though.

If you wear a suit in the hospital, does it make you look like a complete tool? What do most guys wear? I'm just curious.

As I said:

Jackets are thus a no-no for everyone except consultants - unwritten rule.

Sorry, I didn't re-read the whole thread--all 17 posts of it. But that doesn't answer the second part. I don't mean to sound like I'm freaking out about it or have no idea what to wear, I'm just curious as to what you see most often from the junior guys/students.

When I watched that first ep of Junior Doctors, it looked like everyone pretty much had a shirt/tie and the white coat on at all times.

When not in the hospitals (ie all lectures that day), anything goes from baseball caps to flipflop/thongs.

Like I said, I was just curious. There's no need to huff and puff about me freaking out about clothes, because I'm not. This is a thread about clothes, so I figured I'd ask since we're here.

Anyway, flip-flops should be banned worldwide. Feet are nasty, and I shouldn't be subjected to them.

I wear nothing buy sneakers/shoes and my feet aren't sweaty or smelly. I wash them in the shower every night and sleep without socks. I don't even like my own feet, and I have nothing going on down there.

it's interesting...many doctors couldn't ever imagine being podiatrists or dentists...who wants to looky at mangy feet/mouths all day? But by the same token, they can't imagine that stuff we look at every day 🙂 I hate feet.

Haha, I know. Thank god there are people that don't mind it, because if everyone were like me, we'd have no dental or podiatric care. Of course, if everyone were like me, we'd also have nothing but vascular and ct surgeons.
