Latest on Univ. of Wisconsin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is a portion of the email I received from Lucy:

"Your application has been fully reviewed. Early in the season we sometimes place some review decisions on hold. This is the situation this year and your application falls in such a group. At a future date the committee will decide whether or not they will place you on the alternate list. It is evident that they will not make an outright offer."

I received the ambiguous letter from UW on 12/5, and this is the response I got from Lucy when I asked her to clarify it a bit. Mind you, she was very nice to do so. Now, there may be various "review groups" and my response from Lucy might be unique to my situation. Read into it how you will. I read it as a rejection letter (getting onto the waitlist of the waitlist = rejection in my book...but I dislike being jerked around).

 I was afraid of that. Thanks for the info tocems.

Those two messages dont sound the same to me... One says your app has been reviewed and the other says it hasnt.

This all seems very confusing. My letter was extremely brief and read:
"This letter is to notify you that the review processing of your 2008 application to the Doctor of Medicine program at the UW SMPH is not yet complete. Therefore, it will be at a future date when you will again hear from the Admissions Committee as to their decision about your application."

tocems, did your letter read the same way? It seems that your correspondence with Dean Wall indicates that your application has been fully reviewed (or at least for the time being?). I'm just wondering since I interviewed over a month later and have reason to believe that their office is just experiencing somewhat of a slowdown. The letter doesn't seem to be a brushoff.

What did the "real" waitlist letters say?

See, thats what I mean. That letter sounds like a deferral, while the other one is worse. Is there a true WL letter as welk?

the real waitlist letters say you've been put on the alternate list and that they begin looking at it again in april

I got that email that says "we're holding your app for possible interview later in the cycle (circa March)" Well I say a big F.U. to UW...I'll take my MCW acceptance instead. I'm not going to hang in limbo until spring. 👎 Congrats to those of you who got in, though. Best of luck.

This is the exact letter I got as well. I'm still really not sure what to think.... Is this the waitlist for the waitlist as tocomes suggested or are our applications truly not fully reviewed yet? I wish they would have been a little more straightforward with us. At least now we know this is different than the WL letter. I suppose only time will tell if this is a good or bad thing. As I said before, as least it isn't an outright rejection. 😳 Best of luck to those of you like me who are still waiting. I also appreciate the support from those of you who have been accepted already. Your positive comments really help. Thanks! 🙂

I think you might want to contact Lucy and find out, because that is definitely not the same wording as the letter tocems got.

drizz I think I may do that, but I'm afraid that tocems initially received the same snail mail letter we did and then received the second (and somewhat contradictory) email from Lucy when he tried to get more information. Tocems if you could verify this that would be great. I definitely could be wrong here, but that was my initial understanding.

Either way, I know you are right drizz and I should just contact Lucy myself. I'm torn though, because in the letter it specifically said "we request your patience in this process" so I'm not sure if calling/emailing right away is a good idea or not.
😕

I don't remember the exact wording of the letter I received but it was essentially saying that my application had been reviewed and would be reevaluated at a later time. I believe it is the same letter you got.

Lucy responded to my email with the above mentioned email and the rest is sad sad history. It is completely possible that I was put into one "group" and you are in another.

I felt comfortable emailing Lucy because I have met with her several times and she has helped me through the reapplication process. I don't know your situation, but an email isn't the same as calling every other day and badgering them, no pun intended. Simply ask for a bit more clarification, whether or not this means you are on the waitlist, etc.

I'll check my letter when I get home...it is hanging on the fridge in a show of sad irony.

I've been at the hospital since 6am and need to get out of here.

BTW tocems, I'm sorry to hear about your experiences with UW... it's hard to tell what med schools are looking for, really. We met at the interview day and you seem like you'd be a good candidate for the school. In any case, good luck with the rest of the application cycle.

tocems thanks for the update. I too am stunned you did not get an offer. I felt my stats were competitive, and your numbers top mine in many categories. I feel like if you didn't make the cut, it doesn't seem like I have a very good chance at all. As drizz said, best of luck with the rest of your applications this cycle. You are a very very competitive applicant. At least you got one acceptance! My secondary at MCW stalled for almost 6 weeks waiting for my non-science LOR, and I feel that really hurt me there. The writer gave me a fabulous letter, but it just took too long. I have been in the 'smaller pool of potential interview invites' for quite some time with no update. Things really aren't looking that great for this year.
🙁

Aimforever, did you go to UW?

Don't worry so much about the MCW smaller pool... I got the message and didn't get an invite for a couple months and was accepted shortly thereafter. I won't be matriculating there, so there will be another spot opened up for you guys. This has been a weird application cycle in many ways, hopefully things work out for everyone in the end.

You people who have interviewed at UW already, to what extent did your interviewers ask you about your exposure to the medical field and/or your certainty that you want to be a doctor? I have minimal exposure (two semesters volunteering at UWHC, medical volunteering abroad for two weeks, laboratory research only, and no shadowing, although I hope to shadow a few doctors before I interview). I do have a letter of recommendation from an MD with whom I worked closely in the Dominican Republic and I believe it's a good letter. Oh also I'm a non-trad with 2.5 years experience at a personal injury law firm where I was exposed to the medical records and insurance side of things, so I hope that helps offset my lack of clinical experience.

Nonetheless, I suspect that in interviews I'm going to be on the defensive regarding how I can be sure I want to be a doctor with minimal direct exposure. Of course I've done a lot of reading about the medical profession and health care today, but I bet they don't care about that. Your thoughts and advice would be appreciated. 🙂

It depends, but UW is really big on volunteering/community service. My interview was pretty conversational and was mostly me telling my story, without too many questions, but it really depends on your interviewer.

Yes I am a UW student.

I am also a UW student and I was placed on the alternate list for reasons that are unknown to me since my interviewer told me the interview was a formality 👎.

Has anyone who is currently attending UW been accepted?

I gave their admissions office a call today and was told that I am in some sort of "holding pattern", whatever that means. They told me "we don't know how we're working our waitlist yet" and that I would "probably hear back from them in late January sometime". Overall, they were about as helpful as [fill in the blank]. I sent them a letter of intent and would advise others to do the same.

So any updates from anyone in the last week? Its hard to judge how many people have been accepted so far. In a twisted way, its been nice that finals have been keeping me so busy... its keeps my mind off this stuff.

Hmmm.. I got the same letter in the mail today. I interviewed on 11/9 though, so I'm assuming they are just running behind their originally stated timeframe (4-6wks)? Has anyone who interviewed after 10/12 received a decision yet?
.

hey jdf46 when did you interview?

I interviewed on 11/9, you? I would kind of like a decision by Christmas but that seems to be unlikely. On a sidenote, I recently got a reply from Lucy to an email I had sent in mid-November. Apparently she had been out of the office for a long time due to family issues. Maybe that=slowdown?

o gotcha thanks! I actually interviewed pretty recently on 11/30. I guess I'm kind of freaking out, as I will be hearing back either by the end of this week or after New Year's! This is definitely my top choice...

Anybody know when the admissions committe will be meeting next? I really want to get into UW...

jd, I interviewed with you on that date then. I received an acceptance from then about 3 weeks ago now. I'm sure that you'll be receiving word from then soon.

Hi everyone, I just received an email from Wisconsin asking me to send them additional information to "verify [my] eligibility for resident tuition." Does this mean that I was accepted? I'm not currently able to see my mail since I left my place for the holidays. I tried calling but no one is picking up! Any input on this would be great, thanks!

modestmd, it may mean that you're accepted. I received a similar request shortly after being accepted by them. But, try getting to mail or calling them to be certain. If I recall correctly, you have about 2 weeks to fill out and submit your residency forms.

modestmd when did you interview? For everybody else that interviewed around Nov. 26 (or earlier) do you remember hearing that decisions would be made in early Janauary?

I interviewed November 16 and haven't heard anything yet. Has anyone who interviewed on that date heard from them?

I interviewed on 11/30. I called admissions this morning and was told that my letter will be sent out either today or tomorrow...

ps. Thanks SStorm for your input!

Modestmd congrats on your acceptance! I also want to attend UW. I interviewed a few days before you, but I called this morning and they said that they won't review me for a few weeks 🙁. They must review OOS applicants at a different time. Any other OOS applicants that interviewed on 11/16 or later hear anything?

haha thanks for the congrats, but I still have no idea what the content of this letter is...although I currently have a UW student account with "resident" status. (It would just be downright wrong for them to give me a campus id/password if I got anything other than an acceptance.) Argencolts, don't give up! I'm sure you're a stellar applicant, as you interviewed as an OOS student.

Congrats on your acceptance 🙂. I might see you there next year. As far as I understand, UW does weird things with post-interview reviews. The Director of Admissions (I forget his name) spoke during my interview day and he said something along the lines of UW essentially "randomly" selecting applications to review after the interview. From what I can remember, they put all interviewed applicants into a pool and select a few to review periodically. If you're not reviewed that time, you're put back into the pool. As more interviews occur, more applicants are put into the pool, etc, etc, etc. So they reviewed my application about 3 weeks after my interview. I knew someone else who got reviewed about 6 weeks afterwards their interview. So who really knows when they'll actually review an application, as frustrating as it may seem. Though statistically, if you interviewed early on, you should have better odds of being reviewed earlier rather than later.

I GOT IN!!!!!! oh my gosh I'm so excited! I just called Dean Wall and was notified by her. Thanks so much guys for the congrats. I'm for sure matriculating! 🙂

Congrats modestmd!!! 👍

On a less upbeat note, it turns out tocems was correct way back when he said those of us who received the "review processing of your application is not yet complete" letters would not be getting outright offers. I got an email from Beth today saying that I am being 'considered' for the waitlist and can expect an official decision by the end of january. Real bummer. 🙁

Yeah, received the same email today also... Oh well, interviewing at MCW next week. At least they don't shuttle you around the state for clerkships.

This thread has been quiete for a while... Any updates from November Interviews?

This thread has been quiete for a while... Any updates from November Interviews?

My brother got an acceptance letter this past Saturday. He's OOS. The letter was dated sometime last week 16th or 17th. He interviewed in November (maybe early December not positive when it was). So some letters were sent out last week, not sure if that helps at all.

hey...good news for a lot of you still waiting uw is still sending out invites...got mine today though not sure if i'll go...it's for a late feb interview date.

I have a hard time believing that 70% of interviewees get outright acceptances with what I have seen on this thread. Maybe that's because I am also a part of that 30% 🙁

I'm not sure if that's overall acceptances including waitlist or what, that's just what Dean Wall said on my interview day.

yeah, i agree. i've been shocked by others on sdn who have posted that they were waitlisted or put in other categories besides acceptance. it seems to me that the application season has not been as expected for the uw adcom and what dean wall said the first day may not come true.

I got those forms a few days ago... kinda annoying b/c I already filled them out, but they said something about it being more than one year between when I submitted the secondary and matriculation date so I had to fill them out again... grr.

That sucks about the forms, but I'm impressed that you got to those secondaries so promptly. See you in August!
