LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How did I get waitlisted and other people got in? Geez. 😉

ANYWAY, speaking of waitlisting, does anyone know if I might hear back from them sooner than, say, the first week of August? I'm sending in my LOI and a few more recommendations, but I don't want to get my hopes up for nothing...I just want some other peoples' experiences with this whole phenomenon. *sigh*

And Merry Almost Christmas everyone! 😀

Hi BubblezGirl, it's still early yet...from what I've read, sending your LOI and keeping in touch with LECOM to let them know that you are really interested in attending would be a good idea. The fact that you are waitlisted means that they liked you. Maybe you can see if there is something that you could do to further your application.

Good luck!

Yeah I wouldn't lose hope if you get waitlisted, there are a bunch of people in my class who came in off the waitlist. I believe they continuously keep reviewing the waitlist as the spring progresses and pulling people off it. Most of the waitlist movement is over the summer, but since you are on this early, you should hear back a lot sooner than that.

About rotations, info and sites keeps changing so what you hear now prob will be outdated by the time you set foot here.

I hate looking nice!
I like looking like I just woke up, because it's not deceptive;
I'm ugly and I like to stay that way, hell if I wanted to look pretty I'd go to law school or business school, but I chose medicine!!

Also, THIS ISN'T A JOB LAST TIME I CHECKED NO ONE WAS PAYING ME TO GO BUY PANTY HOSE AND DRESS SHIRTS, NO LAST TIME I CHECKED, I WAS THE ONE WRITING A CHECK FOR ONE POINT FIVE GRAND. gdammit. This is school, the focus should be on studying and being comfortable, I pay THEM.

I appreciate the dress code in that it will help you to become professional. BTW - They call doctors professionals and in my opinion it's important to project that to your colleagues/patients who you would hopefully want to take you seriously. Operative word being SERIOUSLY. Good luck to you in developing your professionalism. :luck:

Hey BeatrixKiddo,

Don't ever call someone out for liking a particular institution just because you do not! You have no idea who I am nor do you know my background. I have been attending private institutions since I was in grammar school right through my college years. Dressing up in a shirt and tie is not a big deal at all. In fact, I prefer it because it makes me feel I am amounst other professionals--something I believe lecom is aware of too. And I don't know what type of physicians you were shadowing, but the ones I were shadowing ALL dressed in slacks and a nice shirt (and even a tie most times!). Part of the reason I like lecom-b is because of the dresscode--let alone I love everything else about the school. I don't want to go learn medicine someplace that I can wear jeans and a tee--I would feel bummy and unprepared to learn. I can respect that you are not into the dress code, but give me a break--you act like someone is stabbing you with a knife or something. So, yes...I will proclaim it from the top of the highest point I can find...I LOVE LECOM BRADENTON!!!!!!! Love it! 😍

O..M..G.. I am now praying that she does NOT end up in our class at LECOM-B. In fact, if she does, she's going to have to do A LOT of appologizing before she is invited to our party.

On topic: I think our LECOM class is going to be really ballin'. In fact, I think everyone should head to www.lecomsgabradenton.com and get involved on that forum as well.

I love LECOM-B, too, guys.. and nothing is going to change that (ala, DrJanItor)!

Hello everyone, I've been reading up on most of the LECOM-B posts on SDN and thought it was time now to register an account and introduce myself as the newest member of LECOM-B Class of 2012. What's up everybody?

Welcome PBL DO...where are you from?

Youngstown, OH. Seems like there are a decent amount of people at LECOM-B from Ohio, including yourself apparently.

I noticed on your MDApplication it says: "I will be submitting my deposit to LECOM-B by Dec. 14th and withdrawing from LMU-DCOM. If I get an interview from OUCOM and eventually get accepted, then that makes for an interesting decision. (11.23.07)"

Turns out I am waiting on an interview from OUCOM as well and if accepted I'm not quite sure where I will end up but at this stage, even if accepted to OUCOM, I am almost certain I am going to LECOM-B --already mailed in my deposit.

Wow...it seems like our circumstances are identical. I know my family would like me to choose OUCOM if given the acceptance and it has its perks being so close to home (I live in Columbus) and being an established program. I really like LECOM-B though...and I have already dropped the deposit money. It's a tough call.

And although OUCOM has a PBL pathway, I really like the idea that all of LECOM-B is PBL -- this way the entire student body and faculty support this type of curriculum...it seems like a great way to learn.

Are you in your last year of undergrad or are you out already?

Are you in your last year of undergrad or are you out already?

I'm in my last year of undergrad, 15 more credit hours of nonsense, but undergrad has its perks, especially knowing you're already in, heh.

My dad went to OUCOM and its a nice school, very well-established, but I love PBL and agree with you about it being better the entire school endorses the pathway. Plus my cousin is in the "PBL" pathway at OUCOM now and I'm not sure it's ran the same way, I think he is in class a lot longer than what LECOM-B requires from you.

Punchap: A lot of us (well, Malisa, digitlnoize, JimT, and I so far) are going to be moving down about 10-days or so prior to Orientation (July 28). We are planning on having a big party with Nintendo Wii, music, maybe some beer, etc. Basically, just a chance for all the cool people to get together and hang out before we start classes... kind of like the calm before the storm (sorry for being cliche).

I will be posting stuff the LECOM-B SGA forums about this party so we can all talk about when would be a good day. Oh! Also, remember that your significant others are DEFINITELY welcome to come to. Anyone that is associated in any way with LECOM-B can come.. well, as long as you are cool enough to get the invite ~.^

You betcha.
I'm in full agreement!

Oh, wait - how goes it BCLumas?! :meanie:
Darn, too bad I didn't apply to LECOM-B. *thunk* Should've had a V-8 that day.
Son-of-a---sounds like good times!

It would've been great to have you at LECOM-B, but it'll be good to know that there's another good person at another school than LECOM... it'll balance out the world.

My life? It has been good. Actually, I just got engaged on Friday night (12/21). Haha! I probably should've made a thread about it. I will since there are some people who might want to know.

Heck yea, that's great news and congratulations! Did you go the traditional route to pose the question or did you go with something more atypical?

You're acting like a clicky 5th grader, seriously get a life. It's just school. It's not a high class prestigious establishment, we're all going here because we didn't get in somewhere better, what makes you think you're better than me? I think the pretentious dresscode sucks. Hate me?

I was going to say that I had officially decided that this person was someone's kid brother/sister taking their profile out for a spin. Then, I looked at her post history and found that this is her normal behavior.

I bet I meet you on my psych rotation...

I am done. If you continue this behavior, we're calling the mods.

Has anyone talked to any 3rd or 4th years about clinicals. I am particularly interested in more details about the rotations...I've read the reviews on the sga website, but would like MORE. I'm a info junkie.
I'm the person your parents have been paying money to protect you from. You know, the blue collar worker type smart enough to enter your "professional" world.

Now I want to get into Bradenton just to see what happens with BK.

I'm not pointing at anyone in particular, mind you, but this does bring up a good point. Neither of the LECOM schools are a good fit for folks who live to be rebellious. They expect professional behavior at all times. All I can say is that people with "attitudes" don't survive well at Bradenton. You haven't lived until you've seen Dr. K. take a student and rip him a new one.

+1

Not that you can't be unique and all....but just not the place to be a wise-ass. And really, I'd probably say that about ANY medical school. We're all going through a tough path together and paying enough $$$ for it so classmates don't tolerate someone making their live any more difficult than needed.

1. we're all going here because we didn't get in somewhere better...

2. the blue collar worker type smart enough to enter your "professional" world.

#1. That is not true at all. I have received 2 MD acceptances so far and LECOM-B still wins over those...you're the one who sucks. Not me.

#2. I do not come from a "professional" background. My dad is an engineer and my mom is a housewife. I had a VERY modest upbringing. We weren't dirt poor, but far from rich. I worked retail for 8 years, so don't even think you can tell me about not being blue collar. NOTHING sucks more than retail.

I even own my own copy of "Blue Collar Comedy Tour". Come on.

My point is that not everyone goes to LECOM-B as their only choice. And, not everyone in medicine is a silver spoon kid. I have worked my a$$ off to get to where I am and am proud of it. Can you say the same?

Lets ignore BK and focus on LECOM-B. I think it's exciting to see how current and future students are so hyper about LECOM. The truth is when we are genuinely excited, our behavior might seem a little childish. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

digitlnoize - what did you find about 3rd/4th year? I am interested to find more about that too. I wonder (and this is purely a curiosity) if you can do rotations at a different place - like say Gainesville or such. I mean can you be a student at LECOM-B and spend your entire 3rd and 4th year at another place? This is important if you have a particular residency or particular hospital in mind.

Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays all.

Haha! I am just like a 5th grader, huh? Oh well. I was accepted to NSUCOM, TUCOM-NV, LECOM-E, and probably could have at AZCOM, but I declined their interview. That is 4 other schools and I chose LECOM-B because of.. well.. everything. So if making me excited to start medical school makes me sound like a 5th grader, then oh well. I want to be some type of pediatrician anyways (Med-Peds, Peds-Radio, Anesth-Peds), so I should be young at heart to connect to the young in mind.

Also, I would love for BK to come to LECOM-B. I always hear that there is one or so students in every class that happens to leave because it was not a good fit. I hate being that statistic. If BK comes, then she will probably leave.

Oh, I almost forgot. I know what makes me better than you: I do not need to act like a pretentious ass and put things and people down just to make myself sound better than something. You, on the other hand, continue to do so! Do not worry, though. You cannot get under my skin! As they say in 5th grade.. sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me! Haha!

You have to do your core rotations at certain places. There's a list. These include many places in the Tampa/St. Pete/Sarasota/Bradenton area. Also, Orlando is quite popular. I think you can also do your cores in the NE at many rotation sites from LECOM-Erie, but the LECOM-E students get first pick. We get the leftovers. Your other electives can be anywhere in the country, as long as you set them up. I don't know about gainsville. I would really like Sarasota Memorial, but apparently USF has that place locked up tight.

Actually SMH only started with having medical students, and it isn't USF but UF that have students coming here. It is really not yet considered a teaching hospital although I hope one day it will be.

I think it's actually FSU that has a lot of students there as Sarasota is one of FSU's branch campus locations for 3rd/4th year rotations.

But like someone else said, all your core/required rotations will be done in the general area (Bradenton/Sarasota/St. Pete/etc...) but you can of course do your electives anywhere you want and you'll want to do those at places where you might be applying for residency.

You already know about the northern sites but things are changing and those will probably be limited pretty much to the Erie students as far as the core rotations. I think they mentioned something to our class when we first started that, starting with us, they were going to be focusing on keeping us down in FL since they're building more and more relationships with local hospitals, instead of equally opening up the northern and southern rotation sites to both campuses.

But things are constantly changing and what's true now for my class, the one before mine, and yours probably won't be the same, so take whatever you read from us with the proverbial grain of salt.

OK... here's the way it generally works. In he spring of your first year you'll be given a survey that usually asks for your three top choices of either where you want to go OR what group you want in. There are 13 groups because there are 13 four-week rotation slots. Many people just choose the group because they want to pick when they have vacation, or they might want to pick IM before surgery, etc. It's hard to pick location at that point so 1/2 of the people will just pick Florida. However, if you know you want Orlando or Miami or Pensacola, for instance, put that down and you will be placed in a different group from the other people who choose that site. That way, you aren't competing against people for your slot. If there is one person in your group who wants Pensacola, and you are it, then you get it.

People compete vigorously for class president for 2nd year because your class president ultimately asigns you to your group. You get a group listing when you return for your second year and you usually have a one-time opportunity to swap groups if you don't like where you are. For instance, if just now decided that you want to go to Pensacola, but someone in your group already picked it, then you might be able to change to a group where nobody wants it. It's really up to your class president, though.

Each of our core spots has to fill out a survey during the year that says how many spots they will have available for our students. They will trickle in slowly, so you probably won't get to pick actual rotations until October or November. The finaal submission this year occured in late November. They are working on a new computer system that future classes will use, so I can't tell you for sure how your process will work. In the past, we submitted what we wanted on a spreadsheet and the group met to discuss any overlaps. As a general rule, they'll go back to that first choice you made in your first year, and if you are the one who picked that place in your first survey, then you should get it before someone who changed their mind later.

If your class like mine, then 3 to 5 people in your group will want to stay in the Bradenton area. There are plenty of spots for it, but you may have to negotiate a little within your group. For instance, if you REALLY want to do surgery at Manatee, then you might have to swap an IM choice with someone else to get it.

Note-- there are usually so many people who want to go to Florida East in Orlando and Suncoast in St. Pete that they will have a lottery. Everyone who wants to go to these places gets put in the lottery and those slots (plus alternates) are chosen. Note that if you are on probation for any reason you will be removed from your slot and choose after everyone else gets their picks. If you want to go to northern spots, then you have to wait until Erie picks theirs. However, they have waaaaaay more spots than they could ever fill.

You'll also feel pretty frustrated sometimes because you won't have all the information you need up front. You won't know about the number of spots or about the type of housing they have available because it won't be finalized until all those surveys come in. You should make it your goal to befriend some upper classmen who can help you with choices and how the system really works. Also, make it your goal to really talk to the folks at hospital day in the spring. It's a required event where lots of programs come in to talk about what they have to offer-- both clerkships and residencies. You'll have a chance to meet some of the residents, PDs, clerkship coordinators, etc. Pick their brains and get to know who is in charge there.

I'm getting kind of long-winded. i hope this all makes sense. Good luck to you all!

You're right...I guess I was having a senior moment! It is FSU. That's what happens when you work 4-12's in a row and find yourself sick on Christmas...ugh!

Wow the rotation thing sounds confusing. I think I want Pensacola and I will fight yall for it 😉 especially the chick whining about the dresscode. Too bad I can't hide behind a screenname and talk trash to people because this is my name. Seriously I hope that is a troll and really is ugly.

Anyways I can't wait to move. Has anyone started looking at apartments yet?

Yeah, I've been looking at some apartments. I've looked at the Colonial Grand and Yacht Club at Heritage Harbour so far. Live at the Yacht Club (hint hint)...hahaha

I second that! The Yacht Club is really nice. I toured a one and two bedroom model when I was down there for my interview. If all goes well that is where I am planning on living!!

The Yacht Club, huh? Hrm.. I was looking at Fisherman's Landing, but I will admit that I haven't had much time to look as of late (and no money left to fly to FL to tour). The only thing I am really looking for is a washer/dryer in the unit. I know myself and if I do not have one in my apartment, I won't find the time to do it regularly. If it is next to me, I can use it while I am studying.

/sigh I just want next semester to be over with already...

Just another add-on to the folks interested in Ohio. A couple of the professors here actually are transplants from Ohio. They were brought in to design Lecom's PBL curriculum. They took Ohio's system and tweaked it around a bit to create the PBL pathway we use now. Just something to think about.
But definitely check out the SGA site mentioned above- almost every question you have has been asked and answered before on the forums.

Heather called me at 9:30 this morning with an interview invite! I will be there Jan 16, Wed. !! Which hotel is closest to the school? And which airport should I fly into?? Thanks!!

I would recommend any hotel near the Bradenton area. I cannot remember where I stayed, but there are plenty of hotels within a 10-15 minute drive of the school. The flight, however, is easy: fly into Tampa. It will be cheaper for you to get a cheap flight into Tampa, get a rental car, and stay overnight. Bradenton is a small airport and can cost a boat load of money, but flights into Tampa are really cheap. A rental car + hotel + food + gas (1-time) + flight cost me about $300 when I visited Bradenton, if that helps.

Good luck on your interview!!

Thank you! Sounds good to me!! So you would recommend renting a car as opposed to taking a cab to from the airport, hotel, and school??

Thank you! Sounds good to me!! So you would recommend renting a car as opposed to taking a cab to from the airport, hotel, and school??

DEFINITELY! The ride from Tampa to the Bradenton area is about 1 hour, give or take for traffic. Think how much that would cost for a cab? Not including the return trip, you could be spending a lot on cab fares alone. My rental car cost me about $100 (a little more due to taxes), plus about $25 for gas at the end of the trip. I used about half of a tank for the whole trip which was a drive down to the hotel, a drive for food, a round-trip to find the school, a drive to the school in the morning, and a drive back to Tampa. It isn't that bad. Also, that way you won't have to worry about getting the taxi on-time the morning of your interview. Trust me, it sucks. When I was interviewing at TUCOM-NV, I waited 1 hour for a taxi service that would NOT pick me up for some reason. I actually ninja'd a taxi that was heading back to Las Vegas, so I was fortunate, but it was a very stressful 1 hour before my interview. Look into it, however. See what would be cheaper because prices may have changed since October.

Good luck!

Thank you! Sounds good to me!! So you would recommend renting a car as opposed to taking a cab to from the airport, hotel, and school??

Congrats on your interview invite. You've probably received an attachment from Heather that mentions few hotels. I stayed at Hampton Inn. It was pretty nice and 15 mins. from the school. However, it looks like after Jan 14th, they hike up the price.

You should definitely try to rent a car. It's much better and cheaper than cab. I rented a car from enterprise. I rented an economy car. Don't buy pre-paid gas from them and before you drive out of the parking lot, make sure you have full tank gas. If not..make sure it is marked on the paper work. In my case, it was 3/4th full and when I returned the car.. I just mentioned that it was 3/4th full when I took the car. They credited my account for 1/4th tank gas.

It's a nice 45 min. drive to the hotel from TPA.

Best wishes. Also, if you get a chance go to Bradenton Beach! Oh the soft white sand is calling me. Wish I could come today.

^^I will definitley look into it.. I didn't even know I would be allowed to rent a car since I am under 25 (eta, I am 21).. and that is how it is around here in general.. But I will check it out since I will be booking everything on Friday 🙂

Thanks for all of your help!!

Definitely! As for the rental car under 25- you actually can. I didn't think I would be able to either, but there is something like a $25 fee that you pay for being under 25 years of age. It isn't terribly bad, but it is a difference between a double and a triple digit receipt.

Anytime, bud! Smoke that interview for us!

NEW TOPIC: I don't know how many of you were as lucky as I was, but I would like to share this experience I had on my interview and see if you all had the same. During our tour of the facility at the end of the day, we came upon a supplemental instruction class in the OMM lab. The students were happy to practice on us, which resulted on the best nights sleep I have had in a long long time. My question: did anyone else get "practiced on" by the students in the OMM lab? If it helps, I interviewed on October 8.

Thanks!

No, I didn't get "practiced on" haha. But, to whomever asked about the washer and dryers? I would like to point out that the yacht club does include those in their units (and not the cheap stackable type, but separate washer and dryers).

While a lot of the apartments are nice you might also want to try a real estate agent-- especially if you have a family or plan to have roommates. Nobody wants to sell houses right now because they can't get back what they paid for them-- the market is depressed somewhat. So...tons of houses are renting very cheap these days. Call an agent, tell 'em what you're looking for (i.e. 2BR/2BA, W/D, near school, etc.) and let them do some work finding you places. They'll send you info and pictures, and it won't cost you a dime. You'll be surprised what you might find.

Note- Look closely at places east of I-75. There are a lot of people now staying in Tuscany and some places off of University, but that I-75 traffic can be brutal in the mornings. When I lived off of University Pkwy it often took me as much time to get onto I-75 (1.5 miles) as it did to get to school (another 6.5 miles). Now that the SR70 construction is complete it's better at that end, but it can be bad elsewhere.

Well Heather called me as well at 11:30 am here. I'm pretty excited, scared, nervous for January 18th, my interview date. Next month is going to be one hell of a month. Interviews on the 11th, 18th, 22nd, and February 1st.

I got 'practiced on' by Dr. Quinn in front of our interview group. He's so freakin' awesome after you get passed the Elmer Fudd accent (it's way cute though!). I had the best few nights rest EVER afterwards. He cracked every vertebrae in my back and ones I didn't even know existed!

If/When I do get in *damn waitlist* I can't wait until I learn OMM so I can practice on my hubby. He can't wait either. lol. 😀

I had him for a PBL facilitator....and was terrified that I would accidently call him Dr. Fudd one day 😀. Thank goodness it never happened! You'll learn a lot of interesting things from him. His specialty is really occupational medicine and he worked for the bad guys (the insurance company) for a few years, so he's got some really good stories. He's currently finishing a book on the history of women in osteopathic medicine.

In undergrad, I had a professor for Legal Environments of Business who sounded EXACTLY like Mr. Mackey from south park. Right down to the mmmmmkay. Every single class, I could barely keep myself from cracking up laughing. Luckily, I hardly ever went to class.
