On a different topic, I understand the general PBL system. But when we start school in late July, are we going to have intense anatomy for 10 weeks? Can someone give some details on what our schedule is going to be in the first year?
Thanks!
We started out the first two weeks by having orientation in the morning, and anatomy lecture in the afternoon. Looking back at the schedule, we had about 20 hours of orientation, 13 hours of anatomy lecture, and 10 hours of anatomy lab total in the first 2 weeks. We also had an hour of OMM lecture and a couple hours of clinical exam lecture in those two weeks.
After that, things start to get a little more normal. There might be a couple more hours a week of orientation in the next few weeks, but mostly there are around 7 hours of anatomy lecture a week, 6 hours of anatomy lab, an OMM lecture (1 hour), clinical exam lecture and lab (1.5 hours/week), OMM lab (2 hours/week) and 1 PBL session per week for 2 hours. This lasts 10 weeks.
After that, you have 3 PBL sessions a week, OMM Lecture, and Clinical exam lecture. Total time spent in class per week: about 11 hours/week or so after anatomy.
Second semester, they added in mini-courses. To be honest, they are pretty useless. They're only on Tuesday and Thursday, but they add about 6 hours a week of lecture into the schedule. They are on topics such as geriatrics, spirituality and bioethics, public health, and the healthcare system.
It is pretty intense anatomy the first 10 weeks. You really don't spend much time studying anything else, including PBL. It makes sense though, because it is much easier to understand medicine having a background in anatomy first. Keep in mind that since this is a newer school, they have been changing how things have been done from year to year, so this might not be how you experience it.
