LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
All i've heard is that ties are mandatory, i didn't hear anything about shirt and pants.

If you do feel so inclined to attend the interview with minimal articles of clothing, for the love of god, stay away from the pond, cuz the gator might mistake certain body parts for lunch.

sorry for the delayed rxn, but congrats rturner!!:hardy:

and good luck LauraDO :luck::luck:. It's not gonna be easy charming my way off the waitlist when I'm up against the mid-interview striptease. I've drafted a LOI in the form of a Shakespearian (sp?) sonnet in attempt to stay competitive but I'm picturing the adcom looking at a large stack of LOIs on a table and then viewing a screening of your striptease...hmm not favorable odds for me there...j/k, you'll kill 'em at the interview!

I have a silly question, and has nothing to do with any of the above posts, but here it is...

How do you pronounce LECOM?

Is it "lee" com
or "lay"com?

Just don't want to sound silly mispronouncing the name of my school 😀

I remember it being pronounced Lay-Com when I was down there, but since you're in you can now pretty much pronounce it however you want to.

Thanks Kate,

so it looks like your CCOM interview went well are you having second thoughts on LECOM-B?

Actually, I really liked LECOM much better. I went to that interview because I live about 45 min from CCOM, but I'm sort of hoping that I get rejected so I don't have to think twice about going to FL. I sort of think that we would go anyways because I just loved PBL, and CCOM just didn't feel right to me.

I always say lee-com. I've heard it this way a few times, but I may be wrong...

On the phone they pronounced it leecom.

Actually its French

Nous allons assister a des cours a Le COM.

Pronounced with haughty yet charming French accent.

yeah, meant to say Lee-Com, as I remember the gator living in the pond behind the school goes by Lee.

If it were french it would sound more like luh COM to english speakers 🙂

But I'd second marathondude's reasoning.

thanks marathondude, good luck getting off the waitlist!

If you do get in, I've heard that there is a pretty active running club, so you could lead the way for all of us retired high school cross country runners.

Hey, my husband will want to run with you if spouses are welcome.... he's worried about finding routes out there, we have a great path system by our house that he will miss.

Wow Kateb4, that must be a tough decision to make. I know you're in luv with LECOM but I also know the challenges of moving a family, too... Go with your heart!

I've heard some staff say LEE-com, too, but it just doesn't seem to role off the tongue as nicely... 🙄

Well maybe but going nude really puts a kink in the striptease act i had prepared for mid interview 🙁

You could always go with one of these....

Sorry - couldn't leave that image in my photobucket - My family looks at my photo albums!

Oh God, she could kill somebody with those.

PS I sense back surgery in her future 🙂

I wonder if she has to buy a seat for each one when flying?

I wonder if she has to buy a seat for each one when flying?

No, but she either has to fly economy plus or first class to get enough room in front of her to be able to open her tray table.

Thanks! Will be great to have a group to run with (If my prayers are answered and I get in). In truth, I should call myself marathonhasbeen as I had a pretty bad hip injury/surgery several years ago and haven't run much since. But a year of yoga has done wonders for it. anyway, I'm sure I'll be huffing at the back of the pack rather than leading the way!

Hey out there. I interviewed on 3/5 and I was wondering if anyone had heard anything from LECOM-B. Also, does anyone that goes there know what the status of the incoming class is, such as, IS IT FULL yet?

Thanks

I'm positive anyone will be able to take part in the "running club". It sounded more like a bi-weekly social gathering, rather then a club. The more the better probably...more people to meet and a wider variety of runners to pace with!

Hang in there marathondude!

Ok. So I was re-reading this thread (just for kicks...) and realized that the current LECOM-B regulars rarely have anything bad to say about LECOM.

There must be something you don't like about the school. Please share, no matter how trivial. What is/are your least favorite things about LECOM?

I love the place too, I just want to know what to expect!

Anyone?

I second that request... If the "regulars" don't have anything bad to say could they ask someone who does?😀 Its ok to be nit-picky.

The no water rule really kinda of sucks. But hey, if that is the biggest complaint then life must be pretty good!

At my interview the student ambassadors complained about the mini courses

Are the mini courses really a waste of time... as in you don't learn anything from them, or is it that people aren't interested in them? Because I like their list of mini courses and was looking forward to them.

They said that they were really a waste of time in that they spend alot longer with the topics then there is material to be covered. Plus they are so use to only being in class for two hours that having to all of the sudden sit through 4-5 hour lectures is tedious and they lose focus. Also I guess their have been some problems with professors of a few of them (i.e. the med ethics prof has been fired after student complaints two years in a role)

I read someone's blog yesterday...I can't find the link now, but...

She was writing about an ethics mini class that was basically alot of busy work. An essay, quizzes...that kinda crap.

I have also heard from others on here (I think in this very thread?) that some of the minicourse lecturers have been sub-par in the past...although the school does replace them if the students say they suck.

I agree that the list of mini courses looks interesting. I like that LECOM is attempting to address these important issues and topics...

I don't really have a problem with the food and drink rule. I wish they would allow plain bottled water. It seems silly to me not to, but I can live. The only time it will suck is during the first weeks of school when you're in anatomy all day and what not. After that the "classes" are pretty short.

I wonder if they'll let you sneak in a bottle if you're sick. That's the only time I'd miss it. If I have a bad cold and sore throat, I've gotta stay hydrated or I'll never get better...

Yeah, the water bottle issue is the only rule that bothers me at all, I'm attached to my water bottle so this will take some adjusting. But the advantages of the school are well worth this minor inconvenience

How did your interview go? I'll assume you liked the school! Wasn't the PBL session awesome? They'll get back to you really quickly. You can find out your decision sooner if you call and ask Heather. I had some other interview invites and I didn't want to go if I got into LECOM B and Heather was very nice about it and told me the day they knew...

I loved it, I posted details in the LauraDO rally thread. But I absolutely loved the school, loved PBL, loved the whole experience. I could see myself there, and I pray that they could see me there too. I think the interview went well-so fingers crossed. They said that there are only thirty seats left. The adcom is meeting on Thursday the 20th. I have an interview scheduled at WVSOM on the 28th which I will cancel if I am accepted.

I have written a LOI which they will receive on Mon

I have read too that the mini classes "were a waste of time" or had a lot of "busy work", but I think if I was interested in the topic I may not find it to be busy work depending on how it's integrated. If it's regurgitating information that was lectured then that might be a pain.

PS. Did anyone get pictures from Bradenton that they would share? I was only there for 24 hours and wish I could "see" the area more before I go down in Mayish.

I've got a LOT. I'll try and get them posted soon. I'll post a link when I have them.

Ok. Here you go. Some pics of the Area. They're kinda out of order. Some are from when I was down for my interview. I basically drove around and took pictures from the car while driving. Most of the Lakewood Ranch (LWR) stuff is right near the school. The beaches and Main St. Bradenton are much farther away.

Got some LWR houses and apts. A couple local hospitals. beaches. Some cool sarasota sites. I don't have a good one of the Sarasota skyline coming back from St. Armands. Awesome sight, that is.

Thanks digitlnoize!

off topic: do I have to change my signature everytime I log on 🙁 I want LECOM-B there every time I post

Question for current students or anyone that knows more than me here (so that's probably everyone).... My mom wants to visit and see the school. She will probably only visit once or twice in my 4 years out there, so I want to make it worth while. Should I have her come out for the family open house right before school starts, or should she come for the White Coat Ceremony if they let people see the school at that time?

Thanks!

Great pictures! Thanks for posting. It's hard when you live far away to really imagine the area, particularly when we were there for all of a few days. I'm going to show these to my mom (who says she dosn't like Florida for some reason-probably because my dad lives there).

I live pretty far away too. 14 hour drive! I flew down for my interview alone but brought the camera so the family could see the area. At Christmas break we drove down and spent about a week there just to get a better feel for what the daily grind might be like.

We're a little worried about the constant hotness. I hate the cold though so at least that's something.

I've also seen that Florida is pretty bad for allergy sufferers. Can any current Florida residents weigh in on their pollen allergy experience in Bradenton?

I like the from-the-car pictures 🙂 I did that too. But my digital battery was dead when I arrived so I bought a film camera at the airport and only got a few pictures to and from the school and around the yacht club (--that drive almost made me miss my flight home).

Go to the pre-osteo page, at the top left there is a 'my account' tab. from there on the left side there is a menu of things, just pick 'edit signature' from there.

Mine took AA's and I brought extras. I flew down the day before my interview...got there around noon and spent the rest of the day running around. Went to the beach for an hour or so and drove around most of the rest of the evening. That drive to the beach down Rt 64 is looooong though.

Yay! pictures!!! thanks digit!

Have her come out for the White Coat Ceremony. They gave out tours of the school (a out 45 minutes long) and family was welcome. I don't know why they're so strict about visitors to the school, but apparently they can be. The family open house right before school starts is good too, but I'm glad my parents came for the white coat. It gave them a break from the cold upstate NY winter weather.

As for everyone who has been talking about the mini courses... as a student, I'd have to agree that they suck. They aren't hard at all, but they do consume too much time for what they're worth. I'm only a first year, so we've only had Ethics and Spirituality and Geriatrics, and we just started Public Health on Thursday.

Ethics and Spirituality could have been alright, but it wasn't. I've taken clinical ethics and medical ethics in undergraduate which were both much better than this course. The lecturers seemed somewhat disinterested and were difficult to pay attention to, especially for 3 hours straight. We had weekly quizzes (with bonus points, they were really easy), but still, it seemed like half the quiz questions were based on semantics rather than the material in the lectures.

Geriatrics was a little bit better, but it really just seems like the presenters read what they have on the slides. We can do that on our own. Public health seems OK so far. Still, they seem like a waste of our time. And most people make sure to have their comments known on the course evaluation sheets. I've heard that there were changes from last year to this year based on our evaluations, and I can only assume that the same will occur next year.

Bring some other reading to do during these mini courses. Maybe some flashcards, or other study material. Or do some online shopping.

Thanks for the info! That's about what I expected, but I'm hoping they improve them before next year. I think the TOPICS of the minicourses are spot on. Things definitely needed in any good medical curriculum that are sadly overlooked at most schools.

Now, if they can just improve the quality of the courses...

....
I've also seen that Florida is pretty bad for allergy sufferers. Can any current Florida residents weigh in on their pollen allergy experience in Bradenton?

I've got pretty bad grass allergies, and they've actually improved a lot in Fl, since there's not really so much of a spring and fall as there is a hot and really hot. The grasses which grow around here don't seem to throw as much pollen, don't know about other allergies.

I agree if you had to pick one, white coat would probably be it. With a semester under your belt, you'll be a lot more settled and will know the area a lot better to show your mom.

Anyone?

There are plenty of things I don't like about the school or that bother me; by and large, however, most of them don't really seem to have much of an impact on my daily life, not do I feel like they've had a great impact on the past two years of my education. The no food and drink/dress code thing could probably be pretty annoying, but really, how bad can it be when you're only on campus ~10 hours a week? If the school was lecture-based, and I had to live by these rules 8 hrs/day/5 days a week, I'm sure it'd get old quick, at least to me.

I think this applies to many things that could be annoying - for example, people started cutting class so they gave everyone an assigned seat. Annoying, but again, when you only have lecture for 4 hours a week, it just doesn't seem like that big a deal, at least to me.

I agree that the mini-courses are weak, in fact, with the exception of anatomy and a couple others, I'd say the vast majority of lectures here are pretty weak, and not well integrated with the rest of the curriculum. The content covered during most of the mini-courses was pretty random, and seemed to be more a reflection of the presenter's interests than focused on the material you will need for boards. There is a very good possibility you will need to spend some time brushing up on mini-course topics like ethics, sexuality, epidemiology, some behavioral science, etc. before boards.

I think there's often some tension between students and administration here. They are very serious about enforcing the rules, and they can be kind of restrictive about things like club activities. I've never had a problem bringing in guest speakers for my club, but you have to fill out paperwork several weeks in advance and have it approved by the dean and several other folks. So, they'll let you do things, but it can be kind of a pain to go through the approval process. Since the pharmacy school opened, club activities have been limited to before or after school, meaning most club meetings happen at around 5:30 pm. This has not made it easy for some of the clubs to keep membership up, but it may change once the pharm school is more settled.

I'm almost reluctant to post these few things, since sometimes people have a tendency to latch on to negative posts and magnify them out of proportion. Lest that happen here, let me underscore that in spite of the couple issues mentioned above, it's tough for me to imagine having had a better experience than I've had here. I seem to do best when someone sets the goal, and then gives me as much freedom as possible to figure out how to get there, and PBL has really worked for me in this way. Lectures can be very useful, but as a sole learning tool, it seems very limited compared to the integration that happens through PBL. Good luck, everybody!

I think this last paragraph sums it up well, the truth is every school has its issues, no place is perfect, but when the positives are so positive the negatives aren't as important.

This is sort of how I felt when I was there, of course I see issues that could be annoying, but the basic layout of the school and the program were such a positive to me that those possible negatives paled in comparison

I have read too that the mini classes "were a waste of time" or had a lot of "busy work", but I think if I was interested in the topic I may not find it to be busy work depending on how it's integrated. If it's regurgitating information that was lectured then that might be a pain.

There has been a big push, even among many of the professors and local administration to "frontload" the mini courses by holding them all during the first two weeks of class and getting it over with. There has been strong opposition, though, by the really, really, really higher ups (i.e. Erie). I expect that it will eventually happen, but can't tell you when.

Some things to remember, though, your COMLEX content may very well contain quite a few questions on public health and behavioral science, for example, so having the courses is actually a good idea. They just need some tweeking. Many of the courses in 2nd year were done almost entirely online and didn't take up all that much extra time. I think medical jurisprudence may have met once. That's almost a pity because I actually liked that one-- it had a lot of good information. The test questions seemed a little ambiguous, though, but that may just be the nature of law itself. All of the courses could probably be done online and save a lot of time. Maybe that will happen one day, who knows?
