....And btw, I'm glad capri pants are permitted, I think they can definately be made to look professional.....

About the dress code....

What tends to happen is that when you first arrive they are pretty strict on it. You'll even have a lecture on it during orientation 😱. But over time, they stop showing up at the front door every morning, and everyone starts pushing the limits. Every now and then they'll give you another lecture on how everyone isn't following the code and you'll get to say "Hi!" to June as you walk in each day...for maybe a week.

Now, if you are a pharmacy student.....it doesn't seem to matter. Some of those girls dress like they just left the club an hour ago. They tend to dress rather.....well....I won't say it, but it rhymes with "nutty". I still don't see how they get away with it 😕. [note to self] hope there's no pharm students around [/note to self]

You will hear this plenty of times during orientation....there are only five rules. If you follow them, you will live comfortably. If you do not....death, disfigurement or worse may be your constant companion. But, honestly, it doesn't really matter. You'll be dressing the same way when you get to rotations-- only you'll be wearing a white coat on top of it (unless you're on a surgery rotation 🙂). You might as well get used to it now.

OK. How late are we in class the first month or two?? I have a wedding on August 30th (saturday) that I need to be in Chicago for.. I want to fly out of TPA or SRQ friday evening and I want to book soon because the cheap flights only have a few seats left.. what time would be feasable friday evening to have my flights go out of either place?

thanks!!! I checked at kayak.com for cheap flights.. does anyone know any (better) cheap ticket places??

On that note, does anybody know how late we have class on that first Friday. My buddy is getting married that night and I want to see if it is at all possible to be there.

I checked, but your schedule is not up on the server yet. My class was different (we were there all day), but last years class only had Anatomy lab in the morning the first Friday-- one group form 8 to 10, and the other from 10 to 12.

If it gets up.. could you check for that Friday the 29th?? I think that would be the 5th friday.. or on average.. anyway.. or should i just wait and pay a higher price so i know for sure?

Hate Quest!! Just got my bill for my drug screen.... grand total of $807.64!!! That's just for the urine drug screening. How do they sleep at night? How will I sleep at night with all of this debt looming over me? Ugh, going to have a glass of wine (the cheap stuff).

That's just terrible. The big lab houses (labcorp, Quest) bill like that. Way too expensive. Labcorp messed up my drug screening test - two times!. I finally called around and found out that if you went to a smaller local lab, you can have the drug screening done for 40 bucks (Instant test) or 50 bucks if they have to send it and have a pathologist read the results. I was told that in fact, they actually send the sample to Labcorp.

$800+ for a simple drug screen is ridiculous. What is ironic though is that when we eventually become doctors, either in your own practice or employer, our billing system will charge patients the same way. For simple things, it's amazing how overpriced some services are.

I am not justifying Quest billing system - whole system is crazy. If you don't have insurance, you get billed more (full amount, no negotiated rate).

Is June 16th significant and I'm just missing something here?

Is June 16th significant and I'm just missing something here?

Yes, June 16th is a very special day! Did you not recieve your letter? Obviously not or else you would know what June 16th is. I guess only the really special people were told about it.....sorry about that, I wouldn't worry though, I am sure they like you just as much, well, maybe 60% as much, but hey that is more than half

You have heard about June 29th right?

Hi,

This might be a bit redundant, but after 20 or so pages of unsuccessfully looking through this forum for help I thought that I'd just get on with it and post my own question. Thanks for not flaming me.... 😀

From what I've read, FAFSA loans cover approx $45K of the "cost of attendance", which is $54K/yr for out of staters.

Does most of LECOM B's population supplement FAFSA with Grad Plus or some other private loan to cover the remainder? (that is if they are not lucky enough to have a scholarship) Have you heard of anyone trying to live off of the 45K provided without any additional loans? Plz keep in mind that I am pretty poor, and won't be getting any help from family.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting you all come the end of July!

Thanks for all of your help!

anyone moving in to The Springs at Braden River? It's 6.5 miles from campus on 64 WEST of 75... any experienced drivers in the area have a rough estimate of how long the commute will take?? THANKS.

I just went back down to Bradenton over the weekend, and spent a lot of time in Sarasota. What an awesome spot that is! Loved it.

The COA is only that high for your first year because you get a couple of thousand dollars to buy books, a couple of thousand for a new computer and a thousand or so to buy medical equipment. Those aren't in your budget after the first year.

Keep in mind, though, that your first year budget is only intended to cover 10 months. If you have a twelve month lease you need to budget carefully for that. You will be stretching out your January check for seven months. The one you get in August only has to go for five months, but they also take out all the "fees" for the year in your first check. And, you won't get that August check for several weeks after school starts, so you'll have to live with what you have now until then.

How much it takes you to live depends on YOU. Most people take out their maximum amount and pretty much spend it all eventually-- just because they have it. If you don't have a car payment, pay little in insurance, make your own lunch and have a couple of roommates.....you could live off of < $45,000 with plenty to spare. Most people, though, at all economic levels spend exactly as much as they have. That's just simple economics and psychology.

If, however, you want your own apartment, eat out every meal, study at Starbucks over coffee and bought a new car yesterday.....well, you just might be suffering come January first.

thank you verrrrrry very much! I'm pretty "frugal" (ok, I'm cheap), but I'm not going to penny pinch all the time. So, like most people, I probably fall somewhere in the middle when it comes to money burning a hole in my pocket.

Thanks for the advice, I'll use it.

Ok, taking a conversation that popped up on the sga board over here. What is our class schedule going to be like for those first few weeks? Do we go all day? Have breaks? split in groups?

Thanks guys, I know you are sick of answering all of our questions😀 But we are so cute...how can you resist😍

Just posted over on the SGA site but I'll also post what I said to here:

Your schedule at first is going to be a little crazy and I honestly can't just give you a simple answer, because well.... even sitting here looking at my old schedule for that first semester for the first few weeks just about every day is a little different. For the most part we had stuff starting at 8am. Some days we didn't start 'till 10am, but those are kind of scattered throughout. But in general plan on being at school about 8-5 most days for the first few weeks during anatomy.

Wish I could be a little more specific but it will be a little crazy. Some things are "standard" in that you'll have:
- clinical exam lecture & lab on Tuesdays (just before and after lunch)
- OMM lecture & Lab on Thursdays
- PBL once a week (during anatomy, and then later 3x a week)

And then during anatomy you'll have:
- at least half a dozen anatomy lectures scattered throughout the week (mostly in the mornings, before lunch)
- anatomy lab (for us it was mostly on Mon, Wed, & Fridays)

And furthermore.....
- we had orientation our first week in the morning, and then anatomy lectures in the afternoon. Not sure if that'll be the same for
you guys or not, we didn't like it.
- other random things scattered throughout such as time management lectures, dealing w/ stress (which combine with the
previous time management lecture ironically just seemed to cause more stress), and a PBL overview

So there was a lot to fit in the schedule and with two years of med students on campus the schedule seems to be one big puzzle to fit everything in so there's no overlap or two groups scheduled to use the same lecture hall or OMM lab.

Also, you will be put in your PBL group early on and the class is usually divided in half so that half the class will go to anatomy/OMM/clinical exam lab at one time, and then the 2nd half will go at the other scheduled time. So that'll will just depend on which group you're in.

For the most part it won't change your schedule that much. On Thursdays it may mean that you go to get to go to 8am OMM lab. But they usually try and switch up times each weeks so that if your in the 8am group one week then the next week you'll be in the 10am group, etc...

Just posted over on the SGA site but I'll also post what I said to here:...

If you guys complained enough, maybe they'll change it back to the way it was. When I went through it orientation week was called "week zero" and we met from 8 to 3 Monday thru Wednesday and just had orientation the whole time (except lunch). Then Thursday and Friday we had Anatomy/Histlogy lectures from 8 to 12 and labs from 1 to 3 or, 3 to 5, depending on which group you were in. We didn't like that either because we were sick of orientation by Tuesday morning and ready to get going with classes. Ummm...by Monday, though, we were ready to go back to orientation .

How do we log onto the SGA site?

Thanks nlax and scpod....um can you say...yikes😱

I think I'm honestly super excited for PBL. When I walked out of the session I Heather that I'd sign a $1500 check to her right there if she'd accept me (and wait a couple of days for me to get some money in my bank account). I had to wait a week to find out, but I still sent that check in ASAP.

nlax and scpod (and the occasional spice of dragonwell), I will echo Ms. Laura and say that your help is extremely helpful. Thank you guys so much for everything you do here!

Oh, and June 16th means 1 month until most of the class will be down in Bradenton. That's all. Sorry if I scared you and I should probably apologize to the admission's office for the number of calls they might have received due to my happiness.

So I'm going Friday to get my drug screen and titers done. I've had Hep B and MMR in 1997. I'm curious....for those of you who received negative results, when was the last time you had the shots??? Also, where did you guys go to get your PPD and how much did it cost??? Thanks. 😀

Hep B was a 3 shot series and I had 2 of 3 in 2004. I was negative for Hep B ('cause I didn't finish the series) so I had to get the 3rd and then retest 6 weeks later. It came out alright after that. As for PPD, I can't really help. I got my original PPD done at my doctor's office by a nurse 6 years ago, but because I tested positive, I had to undergo INH treatment and can only get chest x-rays from now on. In summary, PPD can be done by your PCP. Good luck!

I had the entire Hep B series starting in 1992, finished in 2000. Titer was negative, had to start the series over. As for the PPD, you can have them done at your doctor, but I got mine done at my school student health center for free.

I was negative for rubella but I hadn't had it since I was required to for school... maybe 11 or 12 years ago. I had my PPD done at the hospital I work at for free so I guess that doesn't really help... My fiance on the other hand had a friend who got TB so he just went down to the free TB clinic here and had himself tested.

Thanks for the input everyone. I wish I could get my PPD done at my undergraduate school, but it's been a year since I graduated already, so I no longer have access to the Student Health Services🙁. I guess I'll just have to get the PPD at the hospital or somethin' and pray it's not insanely expensive:scared:. I'm getting my tetanus shot at the county health department for $40👍, but they don't do PPD's. 👎

I'm curious to see what how they decide to arrange the first few weeks, too. I guess we will find out soon enough though 🙄. Either way, I'm sure we'll feel all excited and overwhelmed all rolled up into one...

So they suggested we start reading over our anatomy books. I am not going to study hardcore, but I've not taken anatomy before and I want to get a look at what I am going to be studying once school starts. What section/area do we start with in our anatomy class? Any insight would be helpful!

Wow scpod.. I'm dumb. I remember you posting that. I cannot believe that I missed that.

Shame on me.

Howdy from Texas!! ha ha I am really not a cowpoke but thought it would be funny to open that way. I am a new addition to the SDN network. I have literally read every post in this forum alone and I have to say I think y'all are the best class of 2012 anywhere! It goes further than that because the upperclassmen at LECOM-b are just as spectacular. I love how everyone is so gung ho and supportive. I have to say I think pbl rocks! I got accepted to NOVA too and LECOM-b wins hands down to me. I was waitlisted at two Texas schools so I have been playing the waiting game because I too want to be close to loved ones, but I have to admit I was most impressed with LECOM-b so cutting edge and different and I dig that!

oh yeh and I love the beach like nobody's business so my books will be covered in sand - I am totally down with hanging there anytime one of you get the urge and want to come with.

I am so happy to be a part of this class!

Hey, welcome to the class! Where do you live in Texas? I live in Austin!

Hey, welcome to the class! Where do you live in Texas? I live in Austin!

No way!!! that is too crazy - don't you LOVE Austin?! 👍 Where do you live in Austin? I live in the Riata apartments up North near the Arboretum. You probably already said in a post but when are you moving down? I am not moving until the 21st or so because I have a meeting in Houston mid July that I have to be a part of. I am going to try to work a few hours remotely (on a trial basis) with my current employer. 😱

Haha that is crazy. I live in South Austin near the end of Mopac. I am moving down to Bradenton on the 12th, but spending the week there with my family before they leave on the 17th. There's so much going on that it's gonna be so much fun. Check Facebook and keep in touch!

Oh that reminds me. Everyone who is anxiously awaiting information about financial aid, I bugged the office and got this email:

"We have not yet awarded your class. We had run into some processing errors with the first (3) classes and have been cleaning up the remaining few students. We are hoping to award your class at the end of this week or the beginning of next. Be patient, it will be sent to this e-mail address. Should you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us."

And still we wait...

South Austin is the best! How are you moving your stuff? I am thinking of renting a uhaul trailer if I can fit my stuff in there. I may need help unloading though - I have friends here to load up but when I get to Florida it may be challenging lifting my couch and armoir - perhaps I can recruit a few strong arms. I don't have much stuff. Of course I have to find a roommate and a place to live first :luck:

I can't access facebook when I am on my work server so I will be on there less often but still check it out from time to time. BTW, I am game for the sandbar on the 25th or whatever everyone decides on!!!

have fun with the fam!!

South Austin is sweet, but the Arboretum is gorgeous. I don't make that drive often (I went once to go to the Cheesecake Factory), but the area is just awesome.

Well I don't have much in the way of "things," and the place I'm renting comes fully furnished, so I'm just filling the trunk and backseat of my little (well it's a sedan so not little) Taurus and driving down there.

Also, you can definitely get some help moving your stuff into your place, just check your PMs and I'll give you my contact information. Just get in touch with me whenever you get the chance and we'll get a bunch of "strong arms" to help you move in!

Goin to cheesecake right now to meet my friend Jen who is also TRYING to get into med school! I love me some cobb salad!

I appreciate the "strong arms" out there as mine are shot from too much typing on my laptop and poor posture 😉 I will make sure to get the drinks and snacks of your choice as I will be very grateful for the help and the new friends!😀
