LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

Computer question. I have a Mac, which doesn't need anti-virus software. As they are REQUIRING antiivirus software for both mac and PC, can anyone recommend something for Mac that won't mess up our computers. (I'm convinced antivirus software is a big scam, as my old PC performance was always ruinned by McAfee and/or Norton.) Any freeware out there?

Are they going to check your computer? I installed Norton or whatever psu gave me for free when I first got my mac. I was promptly told by my friend, the guy that does tons of code for apple, to delete it immediately. Anything that just adds extensions to the kernel is worse when it comes to macs. Honestly, I'd just lie and say I had it or delete it after they check. Don't be stupid and you'll be fine

At least for our class, you did have to take your computer in to have the antivirus and network settings checked out sometime during the first few weeks of school. Deleting the software immediately after would work.

Has anyone heard anything from the financial aid office this week? I got the Insurance information last Friday, like we all did, but I was told that we should expect our information sometime a few days ago.

"Hello Stephen:
We have not yet awarded your class. We had run into some processing errors with the first (3) classes and have been cleaning up the remaining few students. We are hoping to award your class at the end of this week or the beginning of next. Be patient, it will be sent to this e-mail address. Should you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us.
Thanks,
Denay"

I got that on June 17.. that was 9 days ago. I understand that they're busy with things, but it would really help to see the financial aid information. I guess we'll have to wait until next week when we get our next email from Ms. Flaim.. if it comes.

Well I never did Kate's questions, so I will do them now!

Are you leaning towards any specialy as of now? Neonatology!!!!! Ive wanted to do that since I was four... hopefully I will love it!

..

When my first daughter (now 7) was born, she had to stay in the NICU for a few hours for observation. She was the healthiest new born in the NICU. But it was my first experience in a NICU and fell in love with that place. It would be incredibly satisfying to be a neonatologist.

Academically, I find myself interested in other areas..so we'll see in our 3rd/4th year.

Apologies if that has been covered, but I don't remeber seeing it.

Do you guys think we can make due with the old edition of "Foundations for Osteopathic Medicine"? There's a pretty big price difference between the two.

My mom was a NICU nurse for 15 years and loved it! Some of the cases were very sad, and she got to know her patients and their families very well, but for many it was a positive experience and very rewarding for her.

I think DragonWall or scpod mentioned that they didn't even open those two suggested books. They used lecture notes. That's why I have not ordered those two books yet.

Here is what DW said:
Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine Ward
-most people have never even opened this book. Seriously.
An Osteopathic Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment DiGiovanna 0781742935
-anything imp't will be given to you in a powerpoint. you won't have time to read it in a book too.

and here is the post link.

You rock! Thanks! That's even better!

For those of you on the textbook hunt: www.bigwords.com

Just got Financial Aid stuff, but I can't view it because I don't have a login...does anyone else have one already?

No.. I don't recall getting any email account or user name password stuff. This email doesn't say how we can obtain it either.

Heather had no idea, and sent me to Ron. He said, "I was told that was all taken care of. I'll check on it and call you back."

Stay tuned.

isnt that weird???? they should have sent the email account info first.

I'm sure the wires just got crossed. Computer guys said they'd take care of it, but dropped the ball because they were playing too much Crysis or something...sigh. We'll see.

They installed some new "portal" system (kinda like Blackboard if your undergrad used it or something similiar) and I guess they're moving everything over to that and I think it uses the same login/password as your email.....which usually gets setup during the Pre-orientation when you go in with your laptop to have it setup.... But yeah, probably good that you called as it's a new system and I'm so no one wants something causing delays.

I see it was answered above already, but I'll also say that I have never had to look at the OMM textbooks. For that class everything you'll need will be in the powerpoints.

Ok.

Ron: "That letter was for 2nd year students. We're sending out the correct version with the right instructions now."

So, check your emails in a bit.

I saw my login stuff in my email. Mid-way down in the email? Hrm.. maybe I just got lucky.

I got my info too!!!

Nice Robby! I checked with how much we're allowed to get at max from this info:

First Year
Class of 2012

Tuition (FL Resident) $25,900
(Out-of-State) $27,500
Curriculum Fee $300
Technical Fee $300
Graduation Fee $250
Student Government (mandatory) $50
Disability Insurance (mandatory, variable/age dependent) $530
Health Insurance (mandatory) $2,016
Room (Rent, utilities) $10,100
Board (Food) $4,500
Books/Supplies $3,700
Transportation $4,554
Other $2,450
Loan Fees $790
Total (FL Resident) $55,440
Total (Out-of-State) $57,040

Added it all up and got the max. I was worried about that, too. Now I can officially go to LECOM-B! Yayayay!

so all my "rewards" are loans. did anyone get any grants or scholarships???

LOL. It's kind of funny they put it like that, but maybe it's a way to make you say "hrm.. I'm rewarded with an education!" It's a stretch, but at least it takes your mind off of the eventual debt we'll all have to repay!

EDIT: It's official.. I'm stoked.

And, yay there is dental insurance. I didn't get to look over the benefits yet, but it's pretty cheap!

Today the LECOM-B office has delivered unto us a plethora of good news. Tonight.. we feast!

Its cheap but I dont really like the benefits. its only good if your going to use it within their network and only 1000 dollars max. my plan here is cheaper, and it worked with any dentist and 2000 dollar max.

so im guessing no got free money?

Dental insurance is sort of a scam anyways. You're usually better off putting that money aside each month and brushing regularly.

check your emails people! I got my award letter for 57,040 $$$

.. did everybody get the same amount????

I only had 3 award options:

1.) Fed Stafford Subsidized Loan- $8,500
2.) Fed Stafford Unsubsidized Loan- $34,222
3.) Grad PLUS Loan- $14,318

I'm not cool enough to have options..

Yeah, I know. But if you read the next page (after you click on "accept your awards" at the bottom) you have to choose a lender, and apply to get the loan from them.

This applies to both Stafford and Grap PLUS loans. Ron called me back to make sure I got the email and I told him I was at the lender selection stage and he said, "Oh. Good."

Well thank you for that. I guess I'm just so used to my UG doing that part for me. You rock!

No prob. Apparently, it directions page reads like this is a federal issue, which means UG might have to do this too...not sure...

Hmmmm...

I think I might go with either Citibank or Chase for the Fed Stafford Loans, and the same for the Grad PLUS. I'm unsure, but that's the way it's looking right now.

So did everyone get an e-mail about loans today? I got nothing. I presume Ron Shively's the person to e-mail then if I haven't received anything.

Ya.. hrm. I would definitely give him a call in the morning.

I went with Citibank because I liked the lower interest rate (0.75% if you do the two things they ask you to do) once you start paying on your loans, amongst other things.

I did have to contact the Financial Aid office, however, because I had a question about the Grad PLUS Loan. When you sign up for that (at least on the Citibank loan), they ask you to give the projected loan amount and the start/end dates of your loan. I was confused as to what date to put for the end date. They told me to put down the start date and end date of our first year: 07/31/2008 to 05/22/2009. Hopefully that helps someone else out, as I was rather confused.

I couldn't help myself but question couple of items in the budget. What the heck are these curriculum fee and loan fee?

We are getting loans because we don't have money - so they are charging us 790 for that. Cool! And we are going to a "school" and they are charging us a curriculum fee. Awesome!

Okay..okay..I will just pay it. I know!

Hahahahahaha! I noticed that Loan Fee, too. Kinda a joke, IMO.

The loan fee is waived by some lenders depending on who you choose, but it's accounted for in your budget just in case you have to pay it. As for the curriculum fee, yeah, it is what it is 😛.

.

I did lots of research today on different lenders. I think Wachovia used to have a nice 'tripple payback award' which they don't have anymore. I called Wachovia.

Based on my limited research, it does seem like Citibank is the best. Even though there is a 1% origination fee, we will save by getting 0.75% rate discount and last 6 months zero payment.

Would love to hear from others.

I wouldn't stress out too much on the lendor thing. I think I ended up going with Citi but that was after a couple hours on here doing research and reading other reviews until it game me a headache.

Something a lot of people seemed to point out is that all those "benefits" they cite.....fee reductions, etc.... could be subject to change at any point and are not necessarily part of the "contract" that you sign. So by the time we actually start paying these back in 6-10 years how many of those benefits are going to be the same? Just kinda seems a little pointless, besides looking at any benefits that affect you now, and hopefully dealing with a company that isn't going to tank any time soon.

Well it's good to see that other people thought Citibank was a solid choice, especially coming from a current student. Thanks, nlax, for that post. I didn't know the "benefits" that we saw when we signed up were not actually solid. That's good to know!

One more vote for Citibank. I'm all done!

Just wanted to mention that I got COMLEX scores back today. Yes, I passed 🙂. Start my second IM rotation on Monday and am loving it!!!!!

Goooooo scpod!

congrats.gif
It must feel so nice. And it's good to hear you're lovin' your IM rotation-- sound like a great way to start your 3rd year. 👍

I agree with nlax that picking lenders gave me a headache. I just closed my eyes, rolled my mouse, and... viola! All done. 😀

CONGRATS!!! Hope to join that club in year!

Before you know it! I can't imagine how fast this first year has gone by for you. Just think, in a blink I'll be giving out little useful tidbits after finishing my first year... just before you completely rock COMLEX.
