questions for the med student or anyone that did the ACOMAS recently.

I am having a little problem with the Experiences section. Is it like the AMCAS, where you put down what you did and what you got out of it or is it something different? and is there a limit to how many experiences i can add, for example the AMCAS has a max of 15?

I am new to the ACOMAS and I want to get this thing right the first time,

It's the same. The max is 10; however, there is a separate work experience area.

Congrats yaba, congrats JAL05. MossPoh your letter is stuck in the mail (which is really sucky/slow out here by the way).

Good luck!

I just applied for fall 2009 and I have a ok GPA and MCAT score compared to the avg of incoming students. I scored a D+ in Bio 1 lab and I was wondering if this will prevent me from being considered for an interview? The website just says applicants need to pass with satisfactory grades.

Rabo.. you did this last year, nubkah. You're just too lazy to read old posts, aren't you?

PBL test in the AM. Night all!

I'd probably retake it if I were you. Good thing about AACOMAS is that they're replace the original grade with the retaken one.

Not sure what "official" policy the school has on grades, but have you checked with your major to see if the course will even count towards your major (if it's required that is) at your college? Usually for required courses in your major/field you need above a certain grade for it to count.

I already have my degree, I also noticed that some schools say 8 hrs in biology and lab recommended. I have anatomy, and other biology courses.

I already applied so I can not retake the course right now.

Congratulations JAL05 and yaba

Not sure about specific requirements for what is considered BIO, but from what I remember it was 8 sem hours bio with 2 sem hours of lab, which usually means two bio classes with labs required. Also, all pre-reqs needed to have C or better, since I know LECOM does not consider D a passing grade, and I know for sure that others are the same. It's not too late to re-take it in the spring. As long as you have taken it before you matriculate you will be fine. See if you can find a CC even.

Yeah, I was also accepted today. I think i am 85% sure that im going

Congratulations, McDirty! It looks like next semester's class is starting to shape up nicely.

I am flying home from arizona today and driving directly to my parent's house to check the mail. I'm going to be wrecked if I don't have some kind of positive result.

Anybody else interviewing on October 17th?

Would any LECOM-B students like to tell me more about the dress code? I understand business dress for clinical functions but according to the handbook, you have to wear slacks shirt and tie every day for every school activity be it lecture, lunch or studying. Why? If we are all adults being entrusted with the care of human lives, why can't we be trusted to dress as we like while we prepare very hard to join medicine? Is it a religion based school? I can't find much in the way of explanation in the handbook.

Yes, the dress code applies 8-5 M-F. Guys have it pretty straight forward, shirt tie and pants. After hours and on weekends you can wear whatever you want if you're coming in to study or whatnot. I didn't personally agree with having a dress code before I came here, but it does make it feel like more of a professional environment and it makes people wake up before class so we're at least alert. I can't argue any reasons because I honesly could do without, but then again I wouldn't want to be in class with kids who are wearing pjs. No, it's not a religion based school. It's just something that they feel very strongly about and enforce pretty regularly.

Seriously, after you're here a bit, it's not a big deal any more. If you worked in an office you'd have to follow a dress code. Treat this like a job, while you're in the office you wear a tie. It makes everyone feel more important😛

I have a question kind of reguarding PBL. Since it is self-directed learning, does this give you more free time to do something besides studying, or will weekends be spent studying also? I am just askingtis because at CCOM they are in leture from 8 to 5 everyday, and I dont really ever pay attention to lectures, so I tink I would no free time as I would be going over the lectures that I cant learn on the spot

send it in with last name off by one letter ir wait forever to get another from him? i interviewes at lecom bradenton and this is all i am missing to go to adcom

You are right, you are adults and adults don't wear their pjs to work. It may be okay if you were a freshman in college, but once you start medical school you should consider that your first day of your professional life.

I think too many people make a big thing out of the requirements of LECOM, but from everything I hear from students currently attending it seems like a great school and a definite first choice for me.

I agree with Kate, before class started I didnt like the whole shirt and tie deal. I worked in a research lab for two years and I only wore shirt and tie on Easter and Christmas (and weddings). After a few days you get used to it and it does feel more professional and I like it now.

McDirty: You will have time on your hands. It will be limited during anatomy, but u'll still have time on weekends to relax unless you have a exam on Monday.

Should I send in an LOR from a prominent DO if he misspelled my last name (not horribly but one letter off is still bad)? I interviewed on 9/17 and I don't wanna have to wait another week or more to get him to write another one. Apparently he dictated the letter and his secretary spelled it wrong. If i send it in on Monday wout it get there by tuesday and get my application off of hold in time for a decision?

Just call the office and tell them about the misspelling problem and I think it should be fine.

This will vary depending on the individual, but in my opinion, thinking that you will have more free time since PBL students spend less hours in class is a mistake. If anything, I think more time is actually spent studying, since, as you alluded to above, after spending all day in lecture, many people feel like they are done with studying for the day, and are less productive in the evening. In PBL, you are "free" to study as much as you can.

The advantage of PBL IMHO, is not more free time per se, but more flexibility and control over how you use your time. Personally, unless a lecturer is really stellar, I find that I get much more from reading than lecture, so in PBL, I was able to use my time more efficiently. Some people like to exercise during the day and study at night, spend time with their kids during the week and catch up on weekends, etc. It's not really a question of having more free time, but instead you should really consider what learning styles work best for you.

LECOM-B is establishing a reputation for very high board pass rates, and that definitely isn't a sign that students have lots of free time during MS1&2. I'm sure everyone slacks a little, but the pace and PBL tests keep people pretty honest.

The thing that bothers me about the dress code is that that the girls seem to get by with a lot more! I wish it were slackened to the point of just being able to wear a nice polo or collared shirt without a tie. I know its a professional thing, but I've worked in a lot of places and the only places that required that were so uptight it was uncomfortable, or on days of a big presentation. I can think of only a small handful of doctors out of the 80+ I know that wear a tie on a consistent basis. Most just wear it dependent on the day and mood. It isn't going to dissuade me at all if accepted, but it still kind of sucks. I'll just buy shirts with a larger collar and do the tie tuck if need be. I hate ties because they get caught in everything with me and seem to attract every colored liquid known to man!

See, that's my issue with a dress code...after college + research lab, my clothes are distinctly casual. I've got some nice stuff, but not enough to constitute an entire wardrobe. I remember in my lab if I wore a skirt everybody was all like "wow, what's the special occasion?!" I never saw my PI wear something other than jeans and a t-shirt.

But I also figure that it's either two years of casual in pre-clinical, then you need a professional wardrobe for the wards (at least part of them), or just start the professional wardrobe ahead of time in pre-clinical.

And random question, but how does anatomy work in the context of PBL? I have a general idea of how biochem and such works for PBL, but do you just have a regular lab and in lieu of anatomy lectures have discussions or something?

When you get to 3rd year and beyond, with very few exceptions you will be expected to wear a shirt and tie every day. (Yes, even if your attending doesn't 😛).

I know at times it seems tedious and somewhat ridiculous to put on a tie just to go to campus, but it is kind of nice to begin 3rd year already having a wardrobe and to already be comfortable with the "dress code" that is expected in the hospital. Even if you go into surgery, you will be spending some part of your professional life dressed up, so beginning to get in the habit of putting on a tie is really not the worst thing to do.

Also, after anatomy, you are in class a relatively small amount, so after your PBL session you can go home and wear whatever you want. In the big scheme of the amount of BS and hoops you will be jumping through over the next 7+ years, believe me, putting on a tie for a few hours each morning is nothing.

Clothes arent really an issue after you start. You get used to it real real fast. I wore a shirt and tie once to work and got the same reaction it was after a medical school interview (at the same college I worked at). PI looked at me and said I looked too dressed up to work so he gave me the rest of the day off. Shirt and tie do pay off!!!

Anatomy is covered during the first ten weeks and its lecture based. You'll have lectures for about six hours a week and six hours of labs a week. During anatomy you only have two hours of PBL a week. After anatomy is over then you'll have six hours of PBL a week and more time to study. Does answer your question? or am I way off?

I love that you got the day off for wearing nice clothes. Better than spilling bleach on your suit!

And yes, you answered my question perfectly. It makes sense to do anatomy separately. Sounds intense, though!

When you say 6 hours of PBL a week, is that the sum total of class time, or are there additional lectures and labs? (I'm assuming that there are, 6 hours doesn't sound like a lot of time)

Wow, I go to the beach for a few hours and look what I miss...

Once anatomy is over, you have PBL for 2 hrs on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Tuesday we have Clinical Exam Lecture and OMM lecture. Thursday we have OMM lab.

That's it. Basically you're at the school for 2 hours every day. There are some clinical exam "labs" thrown in randomly, but I don't know when or how often yet...maybe the more experienced students can elaborate.

Re: Dress Code...

Everything about LECOM-B is designed to prepare you for the boards, clinical rotations, and real life medicine.

In a hospital, you need a security badge. At LECOM-B, you need a security badge.

In a hosptial, you can't eat lunch in the OR. At LECOM-B, you can't eat lunch in the study rooms.

In a hospital, you have to dress nice...you see where this is going.

This carries over to the curriculum as well. Lots of emphasis in anatomy (and PBL, obviously) on clinical applications of what you are learning. All of the extraneous, useless academia crap has be trimmed from the curriculum. This isn't to say we don't learn an insane amount of detail, but some things have no bearing on medical practice in the real world, and most of those seem to have been cut from the curriculum.

Hope that helps, and congrats to Class of 2013-ers!

Ok...this is the only thing I take issue with, lol. I need my snacks! Guess I'd have to modify my routine a bit. 😳

But otherwise your post is only making it worse for me...ugh I really would like to have a chance at the school, but I don't have a DO letter yet. 🙁

Oh, and when people kept mentioning PBL I was thinking of really awful, 6 hour marathon sessions that make you want to pull your hair out. 2 hours, 3x/week is totally managable. I spend way more time in class as a grad student.

You'll be fine. Your only in class for two hours a day after anatomy so snacks wont be that much of a big deal. Maybe during anatomy you can run down to the lounge and eat your snack during breaks. Dont worry about the DO letter yet. Just get one asap. I didnt have mine at the time I had my interview and I sent it in two weeks after my interview. I interviewed late Nov early Dec, so dont worry.

Wow. This thread has really taken off today. I think I can try to sum up everyone's thoughts in a succinct post.

First of all, the dress code. As everyone has said, the dress code is rather obnoxious at first. You wake up a few extra minutes in the morning to make sure that you clothes are nice and ready to go and head out of the door. However, there is so much going on in your life, as you will see very quickly, that it almost becomes nice to have that little extra time every morning to do something other than study and think about school. I know that I spend so much time at school and away from my apartment that every second I spend alone is great for me. The dress code is not a problem; and that's not just something I would say, but something that most (90%+) would say. Is it inconvenient? From time to time, yes. Is it annoying and intrusive? Not in the slightest.

I don't know if this was mentioned, but I think this is a good time to bring it up. Food and drinks are only allowed in the student lounge. At first, like the dress code, I was upset. Why can't I have a bottle of water at my seat? Why can't I just bring my sandwich up to my books? Well, there are a few reasons. First of all, the janitorial staff keeps the place looking near immaculate, and are constantly cleaning morning, day, and night. It is inevitable that people who bring snacks will leave behind trash (yes, even medical students are gross slobs), thus making the school appear dirty. You wear dress clothes to look professional, so the same goes for the school. The other reason that the student lounge is good is because it forces you to take a break. Oftentimes I find myself taking a break in the evening from studying (around 830PM) and head downstairs to get a soda/coffee from the machine. It forces me to take myself away from my books and give my eyes and brain a 15 minute "reset" break. Trust me: you will need it.

I know that people have talked about PBL and Anatomy, but you'll see that it is going to be a lot of fun. Some changes were recommended for our class that I and a lot of other people will be sure to have changed for future classes (see my previous post about the hellish weeks of exams we are going through currently). Remember, however, that this is medical school. We are going to be doctors and be professionals one day. It's never to early to start looking nice.

I hope this helps someone. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! Also, once the Anatomy Exam #4 is over, I will be up for heading out again to meet with interviewers (any day after Oct. 13).

Good luck to everyone who is interviewing, and good luck to my fellow classmates on our CE Exam and Anatomy Quiz this week (although I'll probably speak to you in school before then anyway)!

I'm in! I'm in! I'm in!!!! Just received the letter today!! I am SO EXCTIED!!!! 😀 😀 😀

I also recieved an acceptance today.

Wow, congrats to Iowafarmstud, zenlike, mosspoh and anyone else that I missed. Lots of acceptances lately! Hope to see you guys next fall! (praying that I make it that far that is)

Good job on the acceptances everyone who got in. My DO lor will be in this week so i guess by next week i'll know something. 🙂

Everyone keeps saying "You must be sooooo excited. I'd be freaking out right now!" and it feels odd, but I'm not. The biggest thing I feel now is relief. I'm waiting for it to sink in.

It is an odd feeling. All the time and effort spent the past 3+ years and then the stress of applying. Then all of the sudden its calm for a minute and you realize that you made it happen. For me it was almost like I didn't HAVE an emotion for how I felt..................if that make any sense at all!

Congratulations to EVERYONE! That's really freaking awesome. I hope that we hear from many of you for your guarantees soon enough. If you guys need any help looking for apartments or whatnot for next year, hit us up.

Also, should you need any advice, you know where to ask.

Back to studying.. CE Exam tomorrow!

I had the same feeling when I called and they told me I was in. I was a really weird feeling. Like BC said if you guys need help with anything let us know.

Thanks for all the congrats and offers guys. I think, if accepted to Nova, I'm going to go do a second visit at each place with my dad. Do they frown upon random visits?

Random? Maybe. I do know, however, that if you called up that they would probably hook you up. A Tuesday or Thursday would probably be more appropriate because of interviews Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

I think it would be just a good to find a student willing to run you through campus on a not so busy day. Am I crazy?!
