LECOM-Bradenton Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think most folks here are motivated enough to stay on top of things, but that's both due to self-selection and due to the admissions committee picking people they think will succeed in PBL. One thing that's required here is self-motivation. To help you along with that, a lot of the faculty strongly recommend students find a reliable study partner or study group so you're not on your own.

Yeesh. I tried to read this again and got lost. And I wrote it! That's what a day full of pysch lectures does to me before naptime. 😳

In adjacent sentences I said you need to be self-motivated and that you need to find someone to study with. I think nlax does a better job explaining what I was trying to say.

They do try to make your adjustment a smooth one, but it's hard to see what you're capable of until you get here.

Most of us feel like we're always behind, but relatively few people fail. Not that that's comforting to those few, but I'm saying the odds are strongly in your favor to make it through. Med school is hard, and it can be a struggle... but it's not impossible. That's what I meant.

My status says they will re-review my application in 60 days... My LORs wont get sent out until the second week of August. Do you all think this will make a difference for my application? I am also waiting to get my GPA updated from my summer class which ups the GPA. UGH im not giving up, but this is disappointing!

This thread got quiet. What happened to the frenzy of interview invites? Anyone hear anything at all this week?

Based on timing, I'm really hoping for a call next week. But it appears they may be slowing down?

Just wondering what the GPA/MCAT scores of people who are getting re-reviewed in 60 days are...I haven't gotten anything yet but I'm worried I'm going to be in the same boat.

may be they got the class full by now and do not need any more now.

I'm pretty sure the class is EMPTY as no one has interviewed yet.

They are probably just busy kicking off a new year. Its still SO EARLY in the process, folks, stay positive!

Psh, they invited their class size for interviews already and they know we are all such ballers we're gonna get accepted, everyone else is interviewing for the waitlist 😉

In other news, anyone else who is interviewing on the 27th plan on being around early on Thursday? I'm renting a car and going to get in on Wednesday night so I'm planning on going to siesta key and checking out the areas around Bradenton on Thursday. I know we talked about possibly grabbing a bite to eat, getting closer, gotta make some plans! lol BTW anyone else staying in the fairfield?

I'm getting in Thursday evening. Just in time for us all to meet for supper. 🙂 Since you are getting there early, I nominate you, DbDan, to pick the place (unless a current student wants to provide a recommendation).

I'm flying in to Tampa and renting a car, staying at the Wingate. I was hoping if we get out of the interview on time to possibly scope out some apartments before heading back to the airport.

3.96 gpa, 3.92 sgpa, 24P mcat ( 7P, 9,V, 8B). Hoping I get an interview, but only time will tell. I guess it's better than a straight up rejection? But I don't even know if they are rejecting people this early, so maybe it is haha 😕

I'm interviewing on October 1st. Fairly excited! GPAo 3.22 GPAs 3.17 MCAT 28R for those who were wondering.

haha alright, I'll look into where we can all head to. I'll scope out the Lakewood Ranch scene on Thursday afternoon after my morning at the beach

Fairly excited? Congrats. Did you get the call today or earlier this week? Maybe you'll get more excited as it gets closer to your interview. 🙄

Got the call this morning. I went from fairly excited to super excited in one afternoon...!😀😀

The progression normally goes -> excited -> Super excited -> excited/nervous -> Super nervous -> Interview -> Relief -> nervous -> excited/depressed [depending on interview results]

Its the emotional cycle of applications 😛

Ouch, I haven't gotten an invite yet...was hoping I would get the call next week. LOL

These are just my thoughts, but someone mentioned a while back that LECOM-B has 168 slots. It also sounds like there are two interview days a week (Monday and Friday). Additionally, last year it sounded like there were 7 invites per day. If I recall Noshie was among the first invites to receive notice for August 27th. So, with all this adding up...and...if all invites got a guaranteed acceptance and decided to attend LECOM-B then with October 1st being the last known interview date we are now up to an enrollment of 77 thus leaving room for 91 more invites/seats.

Maybe there is still hope?!

For all of you that are coming down for interviews, Congrats and good luck! I think Siesta Key is one of the best places to visit because not only do you get to see our amazing beaches but also the laid back culture that surrounds that area. MAKE SURE TO WEAR LOTS OF SUNSCREEN!!! There's some low key restaurants near the beach in an area called 'The Village' that a lot of people from this area like to go to. If you want a restaurant that you can't wear flipflops and a bathing suit to, there's a more upscale area known as St. Armand's Circle. It's a little more north (and therefore closer to Bradenton) but it is a great area where people walk around, window shop, go to an early dinner, and finish the night watching the sunset on one of the nearby beaches. Word of caution... almost everything here closes by ten at the latest. Unless it's a bar or walmart. lol

Hey guys, congrats on all the interviews. I retook my MCAT and my scores got received this week (I got a 24 the first time and, to my complete dissapointment since my practice scores were so much higher, I got a 23). My gpa is 3.7 and sgpa is 3.5 so I'm hopinh that my gpa and ECs will help.

That post was awesome. Having a complete file now means you have definitely maximized your chances. There is still hope.

I know this whole process keeps getting more competitive, but with D.O. admissions especially, you've got time. When I interviewed here 2 years ago, Annette said that they considered anything before winter break to be "early" interviews. While I know the school's reputation has grown since then, I don't think the other side of the DO admissions game has changed.

D.O. schools have, in the past, had to accept a LOT of people because D.O. schools weren't students' 1st choice for whatever reason, and I'm guessing this will continue. I don't care to speculate how many acceptances they have to give out to fill a class, but it's a lot more than the class size, that's for sure.

Speaking of class size, this is what a professor told me last year: LECOM-B is approved by the AOA for 150 spots, and the AOA allows 8% of wiggle room for "attrition," giving 162 spots total. As far as why you may hear class sizes larger than that, there's usually ~8-9 students who end up repeating 1st year. I think my class started 1st year with 171 students. We started our 2nd year with 158 students, including 1 or 2 who're repeating 2nd year.

 there is >7 people at each interview day. IIRC there was 10-12 at my interview day last year.

3.4cGPA 3.1sGPA 24P (6 PS 9 VR 9BS)... I have a slim shot most places with my MCAT and sGPA both being low so I am not terribly disappointed with the re-review. I see it as better than a straight up rejection. Something else about my application must of been somewhat promising!

Good luck to all of you! Like others have said it's still really early so don't let that variable stress you out at this point. I'm sure applicant numbers have continued to rise since I applied but I was extremely late with my app and didn't interview until close to April in one of the last few slots. N=1 I know, but timing-wise I think y'all are in a good position.

Looks like it's the low mcat scores that are getting re-reviewed, since some dude up earlier had a really high GPA but 24 mcat. I'm probably just stressing for nothing, my secondary just got processed a week and a half ago. My gpa is pretty low due to a bad freshman year (in 03), 2.95o 3.25s, but 34Q MCAT (12v 12p 10b).

That would suck! My MCAT is low (24) but my gpa is 3.7

Got an interview invite today for October 8th

Great, I just got put on hold for 60 days...what an amazing start to the day 🙁

mcat: 27 (getting the results of my retake soon).
gpa: ~3.6-3.8

My status just changed to: Your file is under review by the Admissions Committee. We will notify you as soon as a decision has been made

😱

Just got a call this morning from lauren which woke me up for interview invite for Oct. 8. So excitedd!!!!!!! =) If neone is wondering, my stats r mcat 28L (9P 10V 9B) 3.4cgpa 3.3 sgpa. 🙂

Got an interview invite for Oct 4th but switched it to the 8th (my wife is a teacher and needs to come with me).

Anyone know if how the hiring is going in the Bradenton/Sarasota area for Teachers? All I can find is info from 2008 when there was a state hiring freeze, this would be a major deterrent if my wife can't get a job.

Check into teaching for a charter or private school. I was looking into teaching in Florida back in early 2009, and there seemed to be quite a few jobs available with charter schools. I teach science though. So there may have just been a shortage in that area. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip, she is an English Teacher...*ahem* excuse me, a "Language Arts" Teacher. We'll look into the private and charter schools.

Private schools pay pennies on the dollar around here, do you happen to know if that is the case when you were looking?

I'm getting in Thursday evening. Just in time for us all to meet for supper. 🙂 Since you are getting there early, I nominate you, DbDan, to pick the place (unless a current student wants to provide a recommendation).

I'm flying in to Tampa and renting a car, staying at the Wingate. I was hoping if we get out of the interview on time to possibly scope out some apartments before heading back to the airport.

Wow, I haven't been on here in a while! Lots of people with new interview invites. Congrats everyone!!!

I second that nomination for DbDan to pick the dinner festivities. PeachyPhD is my roomie for this trip so I am doing whatever she is doing... We should be in Bradenton by 6pm on Thursday at the latest I think. I can’t wait to see those apartments!!! 🙂 The one off of the lake looks freaking amazing.

Who else will be there Thursday night (Aug 26th)? People that want to meet for dinner, just message us your cell number so we can communicate easier out there...

I guess I'm the only one on hold, stupid mcat 😡

I'm not sure. I was comparing them to Alabama schools, and the pay was higher. However, the cost of living was also higher, so I decided to stay in Alabama at that time.

It is tough down there right now for teachers, but I suspect things will turn around with the economy. Congrats on the interview. 🙂

Pet of the week: Mine says the same thing BTW. Any day now my friend, any day now.

Just got the call earlier today! Interview invite for October 8.... so stoked

Does anyone know what the deal is with the required courses folder?

All of the required courses are listed there and followed by a red "x" inside a box. It says not received/entered under the key at the bottom, but it's shown that status for the last 4 days and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to send anything else in or if they are just backlogged and haven't entered them... Did you guys also get this for a period of time?

You don't need to send anything. It will be updated once your application is processed. They just look at the courses listed on aacomas and make sure you have everything.

Asking for a friend...

Does anyone know if LECOM-B will hold you file if you haven't met one of the Behavioral Science classes requirement? He's signed up to take it in Fall but that grade won't be in until December.

Ahhh, nice. Thanks. I was hoping that was the case, but just wanted to make sure.

I'm missing both behaviorals and I have an interview

hi all, I will be interviewing at lecom-b at the end of this month. it is one of my top choice schools due to PBL and location, however I have a few concerns that maybe some current students / grads can weigh in on....

1. with the pbl curriculum, is there also formal instruction on procedures such as suturing, etc. prior to going out on clinicals?

2. in some previous threads students have voiced concerns that 3rd and 4th yr rotations lack teaching hospitals and as a result there is little didactic instruction in those years. would like to hear some feedback on 3rd and 4th yr experience.

3. a large number of students from the match list placed into traditional rotating internships. is there anyway to find out where these students eventually matched for residency? what has your experience been with matching following a lecom education?

thanks in advance for your thoughts.
