Hi, im new here and i was wondering if someone could help me out...i interviewed about 5 weeks ago, but i still haven't heard anything from the school and i was wondering if that was very unusual...when i was there they told everyone that we would hear in a month...but its already been 5 weeks...any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks

Hey, I interviewed 9/29, and my app was complete 10/26. They finally told me my app went to the committee on 11/30. Elaine told me this past Monday that a decision was made and that they were sending out the letters this week.

She said that it took so long because they had to wait for the dean to sign the letters. I don't know if she signs both waitlists and acceptances, but I do not think that she signs rejections... Can anyone clarify?

Anyway, call Elaine and you can ask if your app has alreayd gone to the committee. If it has expect the letter soon, probably by next Friday.

Give them a jingle...they are very receptive to student calls...they are usually very good about getting out the information in a timely fashion...I know my acceptance from Bradenton was exactly 3wks to the day.

I have known people who live at Lovell and really like it - it's a gorgeous renovation, and nice to be able to walk to the clubs and restaurants in the "downtown," if you like that feature.

Hey, I heard that the company that was renovating and managing Lovell place filed for bankruptcy. Does anyone know if this is true? And if so, how it might affect tenants of the complex. Thanks! I look forward to meeting everyone next summer!!!

You'd have a better chance if you applied early in the cycle. at this point, most schools are about to start interviewing for a very few spots/waitlist spots. I'd save your money and apply next year.

also, a bunch of premeds don't know what your chances are. seriously. they're in the same boat as you. call the school and ask.

LECOM interviews until the end of May so its really up to you to decide whether you want to apply now.

Chances are good I'll be attending the PBL tract in the fall. What's up with housing? What does it cost to rent a house? Where are the nicer places to live? I was in Erie less than 24 hours so I wasn't able to get a good sense of what the town is like. I'd consider buying a place, but I'd really like to do my rotations in the Philadelphia area so I would most likely be around for only two years. Do people do this?

I'm in the same boat! My flight got into Erie at about 4:00 pm the day before my interview. Next day interviewed till 1:00 pm or so, then went to the airport and flew out at 3:00!

Hey, just wondering if any current students know where the good "cute" neighborhoods are to buy a house. My husband and I drove around for a few hours and we really like Green Garden area...I'm not all that concerned with being too close to campus (within 20 minutes though) and I know how to handle the drive in the snow (I'm from Buffalo!) so any advice would be geatly appreciated! Thanks!

I have not been able to get on the site for about 2 weeks so I will try to answer a bunch of the above posts in one.


There are lots of folks in my class who bought houses and only lived in Erie for 2 years. One guy I know bought a duplex and rented the other side for income. They put there houses on the market mid second year and then left for rotations.
Housing is pretty inexpensive in Erie. I rent a huge house with a 1.5 acre yard, close to the school (7minutes) for $900/mo. Compare that to a friend of mine who rents a 2 bedroom apt in DC area for 1200/mo. I have a husband who works so that's how I swing that one. I think most people rent between 300-500/month and house payments are comparable to that.

The West side of the city is traditionally safer. The school is on the West side. More upper/middle class on the West side. East side is traditionally where the poor/low income folks/high crime area live.

If you look on the map of Erie I would think most students live close to the school. West 26th to I-90 between Peach and Sterretania. Hope that helps.

Funny you posted this! I was just about to do the same! I sent in my acceptance and check about two months ago as well, but haven't heard a thing and my bank account still looks like it's in good shape (it will be a different story once that check goes through!). I was going to call tomorrow, but from what you've said, it would be a lost cause anyway... It would be nice to have some confirmation though, wouldn't it? 😕

Hey all! I narrowed my list down to 2 schools LECOM-PA and KCUMB. I really loved the fact I could do PBL and tuition was cheap but I also liked KCUMB's curriculum and Kansas City. Having said that, I accepted my seat at KCUMB my sig other going to be paid less than half of what he makes now in Erie was the deciding factor for me. Uugggh, I was soo torn b/w the two schools. It did make the decision easier though.

Anyway, I think LECOM is just monitoring the people who DON'T send deposits. I just received a letter from Elaine yesterday confirming that I have forfeited my seat by not sending in the deposit. I didn't have time to send a letter that I was declining my seat. I know, shame on me.

I have a question about the possibility of setting up your own clinical rotations. I live in the Chicagoland area now and would like to come back home for rotations, how possible is that idea. When I interviewed at LECOM I met a girl that was also from IL and she's doing the same thing, but haven't gotten too much info.

Hey Margaret,

I am a first year at LECOM - B, and I have already set up my 3rd/4th year rotations with a hospital from my home town in Michigan. You don't necessarily have to set them up as early as I did, I do however, recommend looking into it as early as possible. Case in point, if I would have waited until the start of my second year my slot would have been lost.

So, in short, yes you can set up your own rotational sites. There is a catch though....the catch is that the family practice rotation must be with a D.O. My family doctor in MI is a D.O., so I am all set to go home for my 3rd/4th years.

I just sent in my deposit yesterday, so I'll be joining you all come next fall! I'm currently finishing up O-Chem at Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell, Montana. I received my undergraduate degree in business from the University of Colorado - Boulder in 2003, decided on a career change, and now I'm going to be a DO! Whoohooooo!!! 😀

HopefulfutureDO, it'll be nice to have another Bronco fan in Erie - we'll have to set some Sundays aside soley for the Broncs. Hopefully Plummer doesn't do his usual later this year! 🙄

I'm glad to see another person from my neck of the woods going to LECOM. I'm from Western ND about 25 miles from Sidney MT and 15 miles from Williston ND.

My wife is the only Broncos fan around the Erie area that I know of. She got a bright orange Broncos coat for Christmas from her parents. Everyone keeps giving her dirty looks when she wears it so she might have to retire it a bit early.

Congratulations on getting into LECOM and I'll save the rest of the Montana jokes for next time.

I'm glad to see another person from my neck of the woods going to LECOM. I'm from Western ND about 25 miles from Sidney MT and 15 miles from Williston ND.

My wife is the only Broncos fan around the Erie area that I know of. She got a bright orange Broncos coat for Christmas from her parents. Everyone keeps giving her dirty looks when she wears it so she might have to retire it a bit early.

Congratulations on getting into LECOM and I'll save the rest of the Montana jokes for next time.

I know the independent pathway is not for me, but what is so good about the PBL pathway? Can you tell me a little more about it? Do you feel like you are on your own learning the sciences?
I was initially very excited about the fact that LECOM has the 3 pathways to choose from, but when I interviewed my interviewers suggested that if you are to pay for going to school and can have someone lecture and teach you the sciences then use it. I don't know how true that is.
Do more people choose the LD pathway? Are people happy witht he PBL pathway once they start? Is there a possibility to switch after you start school?

This is not on this topic, but what suggestions do you have for books? Buy them from students, Ebay, bookstore? I hear you can get a lot of book and instruments from Ebay pretty cheap.

If you already work at a teaching hospital you should have no problem. Just go to the medical education office and ask about clinical rotations. You have to give them the rotation date. They should give you confirmation of acceptance, the name of a preceptor, the phone number LECOM can reach them, and a valid fax number. Once you have an extablished rotation then you fill out the rotation approval form online for LECOM and they send your paperwork. If you want a rotation at a non-affiliate hospital it is up to you to find a preceptor and housing. LECOM will approve just about any rotation anywhere because there are so many students. Many of the larger hospitals have the info on their websites for visiting students and have paperwork to fill out to request the rotation. The only rotation that has to be with a DO is family practice rotation-third year core.

The majority of LECOM students (3/4) are in LDP - that the nature of lecture. I was in LDP and felt it was right for me. You get a lot more clinical exposure in LDP and don't have to buy nearly as many books because we are tested on the material presented. I know most who are in PBL enjoy that path but they learn the material by case studies and a friend of mine spent something like $2000 on books vs I spent $300. As far as switching pathways after starting, that rarely happens except under certain circumstances. All three pathways are in lecture together for the first 10 weeks during anatomy, embryo, and hist. All are together every Wed for OMM. I think if you start PBL and want to switch to lecture you can but not the other way. There are about 35 students in PBL only.

I would not even buy books until you get there but you will need a good anatomy atlas for the lab. You can get away with not buying any texts if need be and just check them out of the library for reference. I personally bought Netter, the anatomy text, biochem, micro, embryo, histo, and path. I did not buy anything second year except board review. I did not subscribe to note service either and just printed my own lectures for 1/10th the cost at office max (we get a LECOM discount).

Hey Margaret,

I was just in Erie last week looking for places to live... there were a few that accept pets, but two in particular stood out for me - Brookwood Village and Belle Village. They aren't that close to the school, but nothing in Erie is really that far from anything else. The website allows you to search different options, such as: if they allow pets, washer/dryer included, gym, etc. etc. etc. Check it out!

I been through your neck of woods quite a few times. Flathead lake/Kallispell area is probably the most beautiful spot in Montana along with the most expensive. Its really sad that a lot of out of staters/rich people are buying it all up. Do you plan on going back there to practice? It would be very strange to practice where doctors are considered very poor by comparison.

I plan on practicing in ND, MT, or AK. I wouldn't mind working in Bozeman, Missoula, Great Falls, Helena, or anywhere in the eastern 2/3 of state. However, there is no way I'm living in Butte or Billings. They are the dirtiest towns in Montana.

I don't like watching most sports so I don't really have a team. However, if I had to choose one it would be the Vikings.

My wife really knows her football and its kind of weird because I hardly understand the game. She consistantly wins the football polls and I don't even know what teams are from what city. 😳

I noticed you guys where talking about Brookwood Village, so I tried to write about the pros/cons of living there (thats where I live), but SDN shutdown and wouldn't record my post. So, if anyone wants to know about Brookwood Village just let me know and I'll retype it.

Chances are good I'll be attending the PBL tract starting this fall. My girlfriend will be coming with me and my priority concerns right now are job opportunities for her. She has an MPH (Master's in Public Health) and a few years of top notch experience in Public Health departments in Philadelphia, PA and Berkeley, CA. Does anyone know what kind of Public Health / Infectious Disease job opportunities exist in the area? I've spent some brief time looking on the web but haven't been able to come up with much. Might be place for her to start. There are so many underserved, uneducated people in Erie, I was surprised how many while out on rotations.

I was just in Erie last week looking for places to live... there were a few that accept pets, but two in particular stood out for me - Brookwood Village and Belle Village. They aren't that close to the school, but nothing in Erie is really that far from anything else. The website allows you to search different options, such as: if they allow pets, washer/dryer included, gym, etc. etc. etc. Check it out!

I'm not concerned with the dress code/rules...more so with the overall reputation and quality of the school, residency matches, and respect from the medical community. Yeah, the Flathead Valley is nice! Like you said though, by the time I get done with all this school, it will probably be too expensive to live up here. 🙁 I've heard about alot of super rich people buying up all the land: Peter Busch from Anheuser-Busch, CEOs from Sequoia Capital, Capital One, Proctor and Gamble, and a host of sports stars and celebrities. I want to come back and practice, but not sure if it'll happen or not! If not, I'm like you - I wouldn't mind Bozeman or Missoula! Bozeman's housing market is going crazy too, though!!! I definitely want to stay near the mountains though, in the northwest.

I'd definitely be interested in hearing what you have to say about Brookwood. Do you know anything about Belle Village (right behind Brookwood). Those were probably my top two choices from my visit - mainly because they allow pets and are half way between LECOM and my girlfriend's school (Penn State - Behrend).

It really wasn't bad! Didn't snow at all the whole time I was there (3 days in Erie, 1 in Pittsburgh, and 1 in Buffalo). But everyone made sure that I knew it wasn't typical. I don't mind the snow or the cold though, so I think it'll be allright!!! Of course I'm going to watch the Broncos game... hopefully we beat Big Ben and the Bus! If not, I'm going to be very mad. 😡

Brookwood Village Pros & Cons

Cons:

1. expensive - you have to pay for water and club fees which are not included in rent. So my two bedroom townhouse costs me close to $800/month instead of the of the $715/month. This does not include the gas or electric.

2. noisy - I think this place is extremely noisy with all the penn state, mercyhurst students living here. People honking their horns, yelling, and partying at 3 in the morning. It really pisses me off when I have a test the next day. Also, the fire station is right across the road and sirens go off at least 6-10 times a day. Most of my neighbors say its quiet here so it depends on what your used to.

3. Maintenance sucks - I heard from a few neighbors that they are very slow to respond and will enter your home when your not there. There are a few minor problems with things that could be fixed but I definately want to be here when they do it.

4. Management sucks - they lied to me when I asked if each unit has its own fenced in yard. I wasn't able to see the place before I got here so I just looked at the picture on their website and talked to the owner. I asked one more time if each individual unit has a fenced backyard before signing the lease and they said yes. Well, when I got here I found out that there was no fenced yard but instead a deck with no steps down to the yard. I feel so bad for my little dogs who are used to running around outside, instead they are stuck in the house most of the time.

5. Snow removal - they scrape the road but thats about all they do. I was under the impression that they would scrape out the driveways and shovel the entry way, also. If it snows on a weekend they usually don't plow anything until monday.

6. Far from LECOM - Its only 7 miles from school but it takes me about 30 minutes to make it to class. There are lots of traffic lights and numerous 15 mph school zones on the way to school. Traffic is really bad in the morning and after 3 pm. Most students live within 5 minutes of school.

7. Close to the Slums - About 3 miles down the road and your into some scary a$$ slums. The east side of Erie is somewhere you don't want to be in the middle of the night. I don't think its any coincidence that Erie's two biggest hospitals are only blocks away from the worst parts of town.

8. Pool & Club - exercise equipment is old and broken. I haven't used the pool so I really can't comment on that. My neighbor told me that last year the Club Fee/Usage was optional however this year everyone is getting charged for it regardless. It gets me mad that I'm paying for it even though I don't use it especially since entry into the facility is controlled by an access card.

Pros:

1. Close to the interstate - about 3 miles to interstate going E & W.

2. Shopping plaza right down the road (kmart, restaurants, grocery store)

3. Close to Mercyhurst, Penn State Behrand, and elementary schools.

4. nice housing - its a nice facility compared to some of the housing I've seen in Erie.

5. small park and community pool nearby

6. On the edge of town - more of a suburban/rural feeling.

7. One of the few places that allow pets.

8. One year lease

I can't think of anything else good or bad about Brookwood Village. I don't know anything about Belle Village so I'm not much help there.

I am definately moving when my lease is up. I've seen ads for places that are closer to LECOM and also allow pets.

That is a bummer I thought that would be the perfect place for my wife, dog and I. So I know I have a seat here because they cashed my check, but they also told me I would be more paperwork very soon, and that was before the Holidays. Has anyone else recieved that paperwork because I still have yet to. oh and I can't believe the Broncos, and now I am going to be living close to Pittsburg what a sad sad day.

I originally put Lecture pathway, but when I interviewed at Bradenton they kinda sold me on PBL. Now I'm not sure if I want to try to switch to PBL. Any thoughts???

It sound slike you visited both Erie and Bradenton, why Erie?

Someone posted some info from 2004, I think. I can't find it right now, though. It summed up to 60, so the info seems to have been submitted by alums voluntarily ...it showed some nice diversity.

I'm originally from upstate New York and have been living down south for many years (deprived of Wegmans!). Hallaluyah, Wegmans here I come!!!!!!

I have lived in central NY and Western NY all my life, never been deprived of a Wegmans. You should see the Wegmans in Pittsford, Rochester. It is like a gigantic shopping mall and they have a fantastic fancy restaurant attached called Tastings. You really should come try it out! You can literally wander around that Wegmans for days!

I can not possible imagine life without Wegmans. Let's just say when I drove to Erie for my interview and saw the Wegmans, I knew it could be my home. Did I mention Erie also has a Panera Bread? 😀 😀

mmmmmm... Panera Bread!!! I've been deprived of Wegman's all my life (until a few weeks ago) and have been without Panera Bread since I left Colorado. I'm so excited to move in 5 or 6 months! We can have a Wegman's/Panera Bread Party!!!
