After first semester there is virtually NO lecture time for PBL (maybe 2-3x per month you'll have a 1 hour OMM lecture, plus the H&P class for 1.5 hours one afternoon per week--but that's fun, and not really a lecture. Other than that PBL usually meets 3x per week for 2 hours each time with their group (8-9 people plus a faculty facilitator) Exams after first semester are about every 8 weeks, you have 3 per semester, and each one covers roughly 700-800 peages of reading that your group has decided on. PBL is awesome--I would definitely recommend it unless you're a super procrastinator and need to be spoon fed (some people do--nothing wrong with that) or you really learn a lot from lecture (are there really people like that? ) In PBL you get case studies to do with the group, go through it like it's a real case (eg, order chest x-ray, CBC, etc) Then after you finish the case you pick your reading (80-120 pages per case) so, say you have a guy who had a heart attack, you might choose to read physio on the heart, pharm of htn meds, path of cardio conditions, etc. Each group pickes their own so there's some differences and therefore each group's test is different, but for the most part the learning objectives overlap pretty well. PM me with any questions about PBL--the website does a terrible job adequately explaining it and therefore people get scared to try something different. First semester is pretty much the same for everyone--Anatomy until Thanksgiving, along with histo, embryo, spirituality, healthcare management, and OMM. Highly recommend PBL.😀
