Does anyone know about a good daycare facility in the area?

Hey anybody get that good email about changing of the Stafford unsub loan amounts. It's increasing 2,000! I guess every little bit helps.

I was at LECOM this week and found out we'll be divded for OMM lab: LDP kids together and PBL/ISP kids together. Just a little FYI...

I went to Erie today and rented a house. It's very exciting! I'm moving up in June. Anyone else moving to Erie in June? I got a 3 bedroom house off of Asbury over near the Lowes, if anyone knows where that is. I'm really excited to get the heck out of Pittsburgh. Erie really suits me. My house has a decent yard, so we should get together at my place for a little barbeque before classes start 👍

Congrats on a house! My boyfriend and I and our dog are moving on June 2nd, and I can't wait!!

Don't forget to invite your favorite class of 2010 people to said BBQ...because...then you could...you should...ahh, then we could answer any and all questions that you might have. Oh yeah, and do OMM on you. Whew. I knew that I could come up with a great reason.

The OMM division is not strictly LDP vs PBL and ISP. The first group is entirely LDP (alphabetically) and the second group is the end of the alphabet of LDP, along with ISP and PBL.

I have a question for current students about the dress code...preferably a female! If I wear a skirt, does that mean I MUST wear pantyhose??? And can you wear any type of shoe, like open-toed sandal etc...but no flip flops right? If I am forced to wear pantyhose, I think I might die.

And are polo shirts allowed?

the packet they sent us said pantyhose are required at all times but perhaps they're not strict on that particular rule? Can a current student tell us? I know when I visited they said the girls get away with wearing scrub pants. I hope open toes shoes are allowed. Such bizarre things to be worrying about...

good enough reason for me 👍 I'll make the potato salad, you bring the beer... My 3 year-old really likes beer, though, so we'll have to keep an eye on it

Alrighty. I will answer based on what I see, not what I know the rules to be. Girls wear nice pants (anything from dress pants to kahkis) and a nice shirt (I have worn a simple Gap favorite long sleeve t and no one has said a word) or dress shirt or sweater. I haven't seen polo shirts but I think that they're a no. I've never been bold enough to attempt them. People wear skirts and dresses all the time. They shouldn't be too short and you'll be set. At the begining of the year we all followed the dress code pretty well, but it has relaxed with the firls since then. For the first few weeks it seemed like everyone wore an interview suit. Its been all downhill since then.

With regards to shoes, as I understand it, you have to have closed toed shoes on or you must be wearing pantyhose. I personally hate nice shoes so I tend to wear a lot of slip on style shoes, even some sketchers clog style sneakers. The open toed shoes issue sans nylons is the only thing that I have heard that a girl got sent home about. Some people really look nice everyday and understand the meaning of "this years styles" but I am not one of those people.

On multiple occasions I have seen girls wearing colored jeans and successfully passing them off as dress code. Sometimes girls wear kind of bar-style stuff to school and people will be like "oh my" but I have never heard of anything being said. Most of the class wears thier OMM clothes all day on Wednesday, even though we are suppossed to change back into dress code in the afternoon. The issue is that the security guards are like the only people that enforce the dress code when you walk in in the morning. So, it seems to me that after that test is passed no one else really cares enough to say anything. But, that's just my 2 cents.

Haha, security checking a dress code. LECOM is so high school.

has anyone received another "packet" on info besides the packet with all the paperwork to fill out? Packet of housing info??😕

Yes I am waiting for this packet too... I thought it was supposed to be sent out in march? But i'm kinda in a predicament because my best friend is on the ASA waitlist for UNECOM but accepted to LECOM, and UNECOM is her first choice. But I am going to have to find a roommate if she doesnt go to LECOM which in my view is highly likely considering her good stats. But I guess we'll see, I'm as anxious as she is to find out exactly where she is going.

I'll confirm FieldDoc's rendition of female attire. I've worn polo shirts on several occasions and no one has said anything (I didn't know I was being so daring!)...I'm extremely casual so the dress code scared me a bit, but it hasn't really been a problem. In the winter I'll wear khakis or linen pants with a sweater, and when it's a bit warmer then maybe a button down shirt or polo. Girls have it much easier than the guys. I don't do fancy shoes but I have heard that if you wear open toed shoes you must have nylons (and if you're stupid enough to wear open toed shoes in the anatomy lab I hope the cadaver juice and bits of flesh get all over your cute manicured toes  )

Ew, wait, you have to stick to the business attire during anatomy lab? What? WTF?

I got my housing packet yesterday as well. It has a lot of stuff in it, luckily though, my husband and I already have our house situation taken care of. I'm getting really excited to move up there!

The dress code doesn't sound too bad for the girls. I know one girl who goes there and she basically said as long as you don't dress like a hooker you'll be fine 😀

Go to the thrift store that is by walmart in Erie to get something to wear or use an old pair of clothes that you don't mind burning after anatomy and wear only those to anatomy lab. Some people don't change, but that's gross. Then when anatomy is over you can just throw it out. I tried to wash my anatomy clothes multiple times without any improvement.

would wearing a lab coat cover up the smell or do you clothes still stink?😕

hahahahahaha...we wear lab coats--despite that, my neighbors even knew what days I had anatomy lab from the stench I brought home 😱 . The only way to get the smell out is a good soapy shower. Otherwise it will stay in your hair....mmmmmm. I found the smell came out of clothes fine after they were washed, so just don't wear your best clothes for anatomy and make sure they're machine washable. I don't think it's ncessary to buy new clothes specifically for lab though. Don't wear a sweater--you'll have to burn it.

Every other school I've ever heard of has everyone wear scrubs to lab. And most have a program for scrub washing during lab.

Why on earth would they want us to wear good clothes so that we can ruin them? 😱

Maybe they want to create a professional atmosphere or more generally show respect for the dead who have given us the opportunity to learn from them. This doesn't seem all that far-fetched of a request and they afford loan money (granted it's still your money) to cover professional attire. Just my guess though.

This just seems weird to me, like the security guard coming near me enough to stare at my feet to see if they are open toe or not, and then proceed to look up my leg to decide if I am wearing nylons. It seems weird to me that nylons aren't required totally if you are wearing a skirt, but only if your toe peeps out your shoe. Am I getting this right? If I wear a closed toe I can wear a skirt and no nylons?

professional atmosphere...something LECOM tries desperately hard to attain, and yet, they couldn't be farther from accomplishing it 🙁

You know, it's probably going to be snowing, raining, or sleeting 90% of the time we're there.

Maybe we'll have no desire to wear open toe shoes anyway.

Pineapple <3 Boots anyway.

Anybody know the academic calendar yet? I am trying to make plans for NEXT summer..but have no clue when classes will end/resume. Also, anyone know how soon after taking the boards you have to start clinical rotations? Just trying to make some future plans and don't know why LECOM doesn't have any sort of calendar posted online.

There is a current schedule posted online for the current MSI and MSII. It might give you an idea of when we have vacation/holidays, etc.

I want to work out at a gym this summer, I am moving June 2nd so will have lots of time until school starts. Do I have privilege to a workout place? There is one at LECOM right? Or do I get any sort of discount/affiliation to some gym in town? I would appreciate any current student telling me my options, thanks! 🙂

hi i'm a former postbac and future ldp-er in the 2011 class.

you must wear pantyhose. it's there in black and white. i went from wearing the really nice victoria's secret pantyhose to class to wearing cheap cvs brand b/c i ruined so many pairs last fall.

also, i recommend the nautillus gym. it's open 24hrs m-f (1am) and great hours on the weekends. i think it's about $49/month w/ 2 yr contract for lecom students. they have a pool and great aerobics classes. some of my friends also joined the ymca and enjoyed that as well.

the apt search has very long waitlists b/c most complexes in erie only require around a 30 day notice if you are not renewing your lease. i also HIGHLY recommend getting an apt/house with garage facilities. the weather is quite unpredictable here. plowing as well as shovelling is quite infrequent.
be smart girls and realize those 4inch stilettos, while pretty, don;t fare so well in the ice and snow. lecom is GREAT about plowing, shoveling, de-icing, and sanding parking lots and sidewalks BUT many other roads and businesses don't remove snow as frequently.

also, if you end up living somewhere between lecom and the other side of the train tracks, be warned, i have been detered 20 min+ due to the trains.

take time to enjoy presque isle, it's GORGEOUS!

any other questions, PM me.

enjoy your summer!😎

Does anyone know anything about requesting an in-school deferment of student loans? Do I just download the request form and send it off to the Financial Aid office, or will LECOM send out more information to those of us who are going to med school with previous loans?

It's pretty easy to defer your loans. I believe most lenders receive info telling them that you are enrolled and then the contact you and offer a deferment, that's what mine did this past year while I was taking just a couple courses. You can also give them a call, let them know you'll be entering school and could they process a deferment.

For those of you in ISP, do you guys have heavy clinical experience or anything of that nature? Just curious on how they select those in ISP ...

No, I definitely don't have "heavy'' clinical experience, but I do have some, I heard ISP students are chosen based on clinical experience or those who have taken a lot of science classes and have a strong science background which I believe I do and so I would fit in this category.

Ok, I know we received our housing packets the other day, but I'm gonna put a post up for myself. Anyone interested in living in a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment can pm me. If my friend doesn't get into UNECOM off the waitlist, then she will go to LECOM and then she will live with me in a 3 bedroom apartment with whoever we can find (preferably a female. But if she doesn't get in, I am in on a Lakeview 2 bedroom apartment and hope to find another person to live with. So if you are flexible and don't care if you live with 1 or 2 other people let me know. She does have a friendly cat that will be coming along too. Like I said, PM me if interested and tell me about yourself.

I have a lot of clinical experience as a physical therapist. I also am married and a little older than the average matriculant, so that may have factored into their decision as well.

I hate lectures and they likely caught wind of that during the interview. I have some clinical experience too, but mostly I hate lectures. Did I mention I dislike lectures?

I'm a licensed massage therapist who owned and operated a medical massage practice for a few years. I also have about 150 hours of physician shadowing on record as part of my undergrad. I was a double major; Biology and Chemistry and I'm a 38 year old husband and father. That having been said, I think I got ISP by simply requesting it.

I'm not heavy on clinical or sciences. I second the notion I got into ISP because I asked. 👍

Nope, I just had a perfect interview and put it as my top choice. And I interviewed in November so there were seats.

can someone provide the link to the website where the deferment of loans application can be found and also how did you guys know about loan information (how much we can take out and all that) after turning in all the financial aid info, by email, snail mail..?

All my info came by email then got the loan stuff by snail mail. If you call the lady at LECOM (can't remember her name) who does the finacial aid stuff, she can give you info on how much you have been approved for and websites to go to. She was really helpful for me.

bump, any more acceptances here?
Yep, albeit I am in the PBL program (recent Post-Bac grad, as well, non-traditional student, Williams College grad, thinking about Geriatrics....)

What are your stats?

For those of who that are part of the class of 2011 and are from Michigan. How did you do the Criminal Record Check Procedures, did you go to apps.michigan.gov/ICHAT/Home.aspx and then pay the ten dollar fee, and have the Criminal Records Check sent to your house and then to LECOM?

Call the guy's name on the paper about the records check, in security. I live in MD but couldn't figure out how to do it, so he checked into it and called me back. I know that they are sending it to me, and I am then mailing him the original, and keeping a copy for myself.

THEY WILL NOT LOOK AT GIRLS THIS CLOSELY! DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT fret about this... Girls come in cords and polos all the time, some wear casual clothes everyday and nothing is ever said. The girls in our class get away with many things that aren't on the dress code, it really shouldn't be to big of a deal.

Males, shirt and tie is pretty much the regulation. Whatever else doesn't matter to much. I wear crocs... They are definately NOT as strict as their guidelines puts them off to be.

Why did this page drop out of the forum?? There was only one page and our thread wasn't on it! I had to use the search function...maybe that means we have to post more 😛
