LECOM Erie Class of 2012 Thread!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I guess I am a little behind in this apartment search thing and finally found a place at Grenada. Anybody else shacking up there for their first year?

Hi Everyone! I recently got off the waiting list at Laurel Ridge and will be moving into a 2 bedroom on July 15th. Rent will be $320 per person. Any female still needing a roommate please message me. (no pets are allowed in the complex except caged ones) Thanks!!

I'm waitlisted!!!!! what can I do more to get in LECOM-E...I have sent a letter of intent, transcript. ugh help :scared:

I recently put a deposit down on lakeview; however, laurel springs just called me to tell me they have an opening..... Now Im not sure which apartments I want to go to. I like how laurel springs is very close to the close, but I like how lakeview has a garage. Both are very close in price.... Any advice as to which one I should go to????

Which one is cheaper?

Which one is cheaper?

Well Laurel springs is 690 and Lakeview is 740... but they would work out to be pretty much even because Laurel Springs doesnt have its own washer dryer in the unit so I have to pay to do my laundry... (lakeview has its own washer and dryer in the unit and the water bill is included in the 740 rent.)

Call them and ask some questions about the wait list. I know someone who did this and got accepted later in the day.

How much is the deposit and is it non-refundable? It seems like both places have their pluses and minuses. I'm trying to get into lakeview--perhaps if you choose laurel springs-- they could toss lakeview my way! Seems like several places have no vacancies. I didn't even bother putting my name on the ginormous waitlist at laurel ridge/laurel springs. (I'd probably have better luck at getting off the waitlist at Johns Hopkins!)

I just hope I won't be homeless.
🙁

Yeah I am freaking out but more about financial aid, where is it? Has anyone else received their loan info? Gettin a little worried.😕

I called financial aid and they told me no one gets their refund checks until 2 weeks after school starts. They will however get the money so you're tuition will be paid I believe mid-June.

Hope this helps.

I'm having the same problem. Seems like everything is full and I didn't put my name on waitlists either. I figured it was too long but now I wish I would've.

I'm starting at LECOM in a few weeks and am having a hell of a time finding a place to live.
I was thinking about renting a 3 bedroom house i saw @ 2 miles from the school, or an amazing five bedroom less than a mile from the school, if enough people were interested.
I'm a 27 year old male w/ a small dog.
If anyone is interested please let me know, or if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

I'm looking at a townhouse at landmark square apartments. Anyone else living there? If you have lived there previous years what did you think?

Hey so i'm a little worried because of something i read in some post on here. I try not to believe everything people take the time to complain about since i know stuff just happens....but People were complaing about the Clinical Ed department at LECOM and stating that alot of affiliates have been cancelled leaving people with out rotations...and nothing was being done to help. Is this a bunch of bull or should I be worried??

Also in case anyone else was wondering about what kind of insurance we'd be getting I called today and Melissa informed me that we would be getting that info in the mail in a week or so.

Thankyou 😀

I was wondering the same exact thing... i hope it's not as bad as some people have made it out to be.

soooooooo......I called Amy and she told me there has been movement on the wait list but I just hope my name gets pulled off next.........I wonder how many people are wait listed!!????.....I don't know if knowing that fact will help me or not but I hope am getting close to getting pulled off......................

I was wondering, are people who are paying this much for rent paying for it all with loans? I'm just wondering how much we can afford. Still haven't found a place...

I figured:

25k tuition
8.4k rent (700*12)
5k food/books/ect

Total: 38.4 in loans that I need to take out of the 55k??? available

just a guess but based on my budget 5k is way low for everything else besides rent...especially w/ gas at 4.00 a gallon. if you never went home from erie, and never went out at all, didn't get cable and didn't pay much in bills maybe. my suggestion, take out the full loan and then pay back what you don't spend...that way if you need the money you'll have it instead of needing it and not having it.

Most of the med students that I know, borrow the full amount & keep Mom & Dad on speed dial. That is, unless you are in the Army National Guard (which pays > 40K/year salary after taxes + full benefits, while in med school). 👍 I apologize for shamelessly promoting a great deal.

Hello all. congratulations to everyone. I'm new to this thing but reading all the posts just answered all my questions. I look forward to meeting all of you in July.

hi everyone!

Wouldn't it be nice if the incoming class got together before orientation began? We could meet at one of the local restaurants (like Damons, Max n Ermas, etc).

Maybe one of the current students can offer an opinion - does anybody plan a get together, where would be a good place to meet up?

Fox and Hound is a good place. Some of us met up there last year.

There's some sort of get-together planning going on on the facebook group as well in case you don't know about it.

anyone going to LECOM next year into startin a band as a stress reliever? I have played drums in classic rock cover bands throughout high school and college and stress relief is an understatement. Let me know so I can bring my kit up to Erie.

Also anyone livin in Mill Glen? car pooling will save polar bears

Awww....that seems like forever ago. Tear.

PS We are going to have a BBQ sometime soon for some people still around. Come over and bring your kiddies! And any soon to be 1st years are welcome too.

LisaMD, sounds great. Now that we have a back yard with a grill, & are neighbors, I submit to you that it might be ideal to have alternating bi-monthly gatherings of the LECOM mutual admiration society for those of us who are sticking around for the wonderful Erie summer.

CaringCures, I was a professional singer (bari-tenor w/ a penchant for the Doors). I would gladly entertain the concept of starting a band, I have a garage, we should meet.

MedicineMan99, we coordinated our get-togethers last year on SDN. We went to Lauren's house, saw the Simpsons movie, had the orgy, etc. Where were you?

Anyone else driving across the country this month or next month? Gas prices are crazy, how are they doing in Erie? Hope they are not more than 4 dollars a gallon yet.

It looks like car pooling will be the way to go come the fall. Stupid gas prices. I'm living in Landmark if any other 1st years want to carpool together

Speaking of gas prices, I just got a new bike and was planning on riding that to and from school on the nicer days. Can one of the current students tell me if it is okay/possible to arrive in biking attire, shower, and get dressed at LECOM?

Not sure if they actually have showers for students to use within the school. But to me that would seem more of a hassle instead of car pooling. Look at it this way you'll ride your bike to school with your change of clothes and ALL the books you need for the day plus shower supplies and your lunch. Not to mention that if your attire is wrinkled in any manner someone will call you on it because you are supposed to be in professional attire. Then you have to find some place to lock up the bike (I didn't see bike racks when I was there).

While I understand what you are trying to do I'm not sure if that would be the best idea time constraints not withstanding.

I found the bike racks and yes, they are hidden. I just assumed that they had showers and a locker room for students because they have that little gym.😕

It isn't really the gas prices that bother me as our house is about two miles from campus. I just like to ride and think that if it is possible it would save me a bit of cash and be a good workout at the same time.

You will not be allowed into the building, certainly not past Dr. Esper (the retired urologist/LECOM investor who is paid $1/year to sit in a chair & inspect the students for proper attire upon morning entry) unless you are in appropriate LECOM dress code. On Wednesdays however, you will be able to get by with it because of OPP (thursdays for ISP/PBL, so you could double-dip because there are too many of us to keep track of). I'm afraid you will have to bike to school in dress code or change in the parking lot (which might constitute grounds for dismissal due to "lack of professionalism").

I know that LECOM seems like an easy school to get into, but I do submit to you that it is a very tough school. You will become very familiar with the rules during orientation. Obey them and no harm will come to you. Rebel, and you will get dismissed (we lost 22 after the 1st semester).
Please feel free to chime in, bkpa2med, buckeye4life, & Dr. Vitale.

Hey!
Im def down for a get together at fox and hounds or max and ermas or anywhere. i think it would be good cause we will be shuffled around at orientation to different meetings/ speakers and i dont know how much talking we will get to do. july 25th anyone?

First off amindwalker, I am very sad that you are willing to be in some garage pick-up band of first years but not a quality sexy barbershop quartet with your loyal second years👎🙂eek::laugh::laugh:

Anyways, I would highly discourage biking to school and then attempting to change. There is no place to change and definitely no place to shower. (Although once I did see a guy give himself a sponge bath in the sink in the second floor men's bathroom- but I'm pretty sure it was some funky OMM technique we haven't yet learned) I'm sure, however, that amindwalker wouldn't mind you showering and shaving at his house since he lives so close to school:laugh: If you are lucky, he may even cook you breakfast!

Instead, I would suggest saving your workouts for after school when you will really need the stress relief or, if you are concerned about the environment, car pooling.

Hey Star220, I think it would be a great idea to try and get a bunch of us together! I'm in for july 25

Dr. V, are you medicineman99? I told you I would do the whole barbershop/birth-control thingy. It's true, I live the closest to LECOM & the National Guard pays for it. I will cook you breakfast if pop tarts + Pepsi is your thing. Kaplah!!!

Did you really lose 22 students from honor code violations?

I am driving from AZ to Erie at the end of June/beginning of July. Gas prices here just hit the $4 mark and I'm sure they're just as high, if not higher in PA. At least I have a fairly fuel-efficient car, but I am disappointed that I won't be able to bike to class.

All I know is that last January, one of the security guys told me that they had a list of 22 names of people who will no longer be members of the class of 2011. He said that half of them quit & the other half were dismissed for various reasons. I don't know if any of them were actually honor code violations (that would be more along the lines of cheating or not reporting someone whom you have seen cheating). I'm just trying to give you guys the heads up. LECOM is tough and the rules are rigid. If you apply yourself & don't cause problems, you will survive. BTW, we've lost a few more during the second semester, but I don't know much about that.

Be advised, I am not knocking LECOM or trying to scare anyone. It was my intention to point out that the dress code & other, perhaps uncommon rules, are not subject to interpretation. They will send you home if you are not appropriately dressed & you will not be allowed in without your ID badge. It's really not a big deal if you are a grown-up.

I think July 25th at Fox and Hounds is a good idea.

This is my vote for the pre-orientation gathering 👍

If anyone is still looking for a place to live, I have a two bedroom apt. at Scenery Hills (just down the street) and am looking for a roommate. I am a
26 y/o male, non smoker - LECOM Class of 2012 !!!

Technically I think I live closest...🙄

Also, I think we are going to have our little BBQ this saturday the 14th. Is that good for you?

Are any little 1st years here that want to come and meet some 2nd years?

Lisa, you do indeed live closer than me:bow:, but technically Ephram (post-bac on the corner of 42nd & Ellsworth, in Dr. Thomas' old house) lives the closest. My crew & I will gladly be there on the 14th. Now that the Absinthe ban has been lifted, I can bring some. 👍
