LECOM-Erie Discussion thread 2007-2008

So I'm wondering if anyone from Long Island, NY is going to be attending LECOM Erie with me and wanted to share that the orientation starting date is July 26th.

Hi there,
How did you find out the orientation date? Did you recieve your orientation packet already?

My first question is what text we will be using for anat? And also, are there specific books that the PBL students are required to buy and is there a list of them anywhere? I ask this because my older sister is graduating this year from MD school and has offered to give me all of her books if I can use them (pathology etc, etc, etc).

My second question is how far could I plan to commute within reason (is 45 minutes to an hour too long)? I know the snow makes driving fairly difficult! But I will also be doing PBL which I understand would only require me to come to campus three days a week. Any oppinions would be greatly appreciated!!

Hello. The book we used this year for Anatomy was "Clinical Anatomy by Regions" by Snell, I don't know if it's the same for next year. You can go to LECOM's website and email Sara Comi from the bookstore and ask her if she has a booklist available yet for next year. She may not, so I agree that you should take your sister's books and if you don't need them then no harm done but if you do, then you're a step ahead.

As for the commute, personally, I think 45 minutes is too much. I thought 15-20 was too much actually, I live about 5 minutes away. If there is a specific reason than that's one thing, but for the first 12 weeks you'll be on campus every day for Anatomy and there is some fairly crappy driving situations. It's not til after anatomy is done that you will have to be on campus less (but I'm not in PBL so I don't know much about that). But there are people who live farther away and don't have any problems with it.

Hi all, I just received an acceptance letter, however, I will not be accepting it and was wondering what the next step in the process was. Is a written response necessary to tell them I am rejecting the acceptance or is an email acceptable?

If it were me I'd write them. It is a more professional approach.

when did you interview? congrats! I would be on the safe side and send one of each (email and snail mail).

I emailed them to ask for the date because I wanted to plan an awesome vacation before I go brain dead with studying.

I have my interview in the morning. I'm so nervous. I really want to get in! Ahh!

Please send good vibes my way. Thanks.

Just relax, it's a pretty chill day. Everyone was really nice. The dude who did our orientation lecture thing in the morning (forget his name) was hilarious. In the interview they just want to get to know you, no need to worry about it and the questions have already been posted. Good Luck!

I was trying to find out does LECOM require an interview for the Postbac program? How soon after you submit the application do you hear something back as far as acceptance or rejection? Thanks.
😕

No interview for the postbac program. You will not find out if you get in until around April, but go ahead and apply now...earlier the better.

Is anybody else worn out by the immunization form? It is ridiculously tedious. I've been back to the clinic about 10 times trying to resolve it. What is really crazy is that you must test positive/immune to hep B. What the heck? A person who has hep B would be better off then somebody who doesn't. Now I have to get more hep B shots since I tested negative (I've already had three-- but I guess they have expired according to the test) This matriculation packet is really an "obstacle course." Is this going smoothly for anyone?

It’s going fine for me. I’ve only had to go once so far and I need to go two more times to complete the hep B series and that will be all. It was rather painless actually; I don’t see why they made you go 10 times.

Going smooth for me, but I can see how it could be a huge pain if you don't test positive for anti-bodies. I had my hep B updated at the hospital where I work so I haven't had any problems other than updating my tetanus and PPD. I am excited to finally have everything done.

Anyone going out to Erie to find housing before school starts? My wife and I are going to check out some houses because it is so affordable and I believe it is a good time to buy regardless of what people have said. Anyone else looking to buy?

I may have exaggerated a little... but I mean I had to go the first time to get stuff done. The nurse didn't get titers for everything... so I had to go back again. I had to go again for a urine panel and a breathalyser test. I had to get blood drawn again for full documentation of titers. Plus, results are not instantaneous so each time I got something done, I would have to make another trip a few days later... (usually finding that there was more I needed to get done).

Oh I see…I guess I lucked out since everything was done during the first visit. Sorry to hear you had to go through that. They could’ve spared you a couple of trips.

Hey that sucks that it is taking so long to do your immunization form. I had all of my stuff done (titers and urine sample) when I got a physical from my doctor. Except the nurse had a hard time drawing blood 😱OUCH! I just have to go back in a month to get the step 2 ppd done. Good luck though getting the rest of your stuff done.

I am! I'm from Oklahoma so I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it up there to look though. Have you found any good realtors? I've been looking online to find someone because my inlaws (PA residents) are going up there next weekend to look at houses for us.

Does anyone know if there any spots open and whether or not they are still interviewing?

If they are, how many and until when?

Thanks!!

I'm not sure, but I received an interview date in the mail this week for the end of March. My file was complete Feb 12.

On a side note, I interviewed at Bradenton this week and they were only 2/3 full. But I think Erie might get more applications.

Well, a recommedation was made to look with Howard Hanna homes but who knows. I have seen quite a few homes online, although that isn't always reliable as to whether they are in active sale or not. My wife has found a few that we are definately going to look at, otherwise we will find out when we go house hunting in Mid March. Have you found any prospects, yet?

Is it true that we start anatomy during orientation?

I applied in Sept also and just got an interview letter today. So hang on everyone it looks like they are still interviewing. Since I am interviewing so late do you think I still have a chance?!?!

Sure you have a chance, you are being interviewed and they accept a good majority of those that they interview. I would say that as long as you do well in the interview you will more than likely be accepted. No worries.

Thanks a lot for the encouragment!!! Hope everything is going well for you

that sounds comforting...

So maybe someone could help me clear this fear out of my system haha...is there anyway that LECOM rejects applicants? I really wanna go there and I'm terrified that my interview is going to get me rejected...I feel like I talked to much during it!

Hey, what day are you interviewing? I have mine this Thursday.

hey, anyone interview on feb 22nd? hear anything back? does LECOM send you an email or packet when you get accepted? how long does it usually take?

They meet every Wednesday. You should call them after tomorrow to see what's your status is. It generally takes between 2-3 weeks.

I interviewed on January 18 and received my letter on January 28. 🙂 Good luck!

I interviewed on Feb 14th I think was the date. It was a Thursday.

Yes we started anatomy during orientation week. The class before us gave feedback saying orientation was boring, throw in some classes to make it more interesting. It was kind of a nice slow start because the next week we just jumped into everything.

So I'm interviewing on 3/10 next monday and I'm driving from NYC to Erie (8 hours or so) it made more sense than flying to buffalo and driving down (cheaper too). I'm staying at the travellodge off of 90. Would there be any students willing to meet up with me sunday evening and give me their impression of the school? Thanks

BTW is there anyone else on here interviewing on monday the 10th?

Hi, I am going to be attending LECOM Erie. I am from Smithtown, you?

I am studying for a bio exam right now, and I can't help but thinking that the Admissions Committee is making their decisions tomorrow for people who interviewed last week. I got complimented on having "great communication skills" and a good BS MCAT score. Please send in the good vibes. Although I don't mind re-applying next year, I seriously need an acceptance, and I am horrible at the waiting game.

don't go crazy about the mailbox, they're way behind on the decisions. i interviewed the 11th and called about it last thursday and they told me i hadn't gone to committee yet. i know about 20 other people from that week that said the same thing and haven't heard yet. best of luck though, maybe i'll see you there next year

Hopefully you can find someone but I just wanted to let you know that we have our Musculoskeletal final this Friday and start Neuro on Mon, which means a weekend 100% free, so a lot of people are going away this weekend (LDP students).....

Thanks. I am feeling this one, and I will share my karma by sending the good vibes to you too. When did you interview?
Hi Bonsante. I'm interviewing at PNWHSCOM and LECOM Bradenton so far but have applied here and am complete so HOPING to get an interview here too.
So far what has been your first choice and why?
I'd like to hear your feedback. You seem really level-headed.
Good Luck! Hope you hear soon!:banana::banana::banana::banana:

Hey not sure if I spelled that right but in response to not being accepted because you talk too much....I was really worried about the same thing in the interview. I was actually told to stop talking, but I was accepted to PBL yesterday!! So I hope that makes you feel better.

Also anyone know where good places to live are. I want to stay very close, money is an issue, and i don't mind living with a roommate as long as they're not crazy haha.
