LECOM - Erie Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
starting to prepare for my interview on the 30th... hope it goes well. The pictures of the campus look nice and professional and there seems to be a lot of opportunities for the students. I don't know much about the town though and I was reading that there is a second campus now open close to Pit. ??? How do you get to see that campus? Looks like its time to start reading up on Erie, PA. It will be my first time in that time zone. 🙂

The Seton Hill location will be all PBL and will matriculate 116 students this upcoming year. You can see it from Google Earth more than likely 😉. Erie is a nice town. Reminds me a lot of the area I am from. Winters aren't that bad (100-150" of snow) or so they say. There is no pattern, each year seems to be different. There is a lot of stuff to do in the city and by the lake. If you want more information make sure you ask Susan, granted she is your hostess, at the interview. She gave us a lot of information about the area.

Will it be a lot different than the Erie campus and will students be able to chose to go there if they like it better?

Hmmm not sure about the PBL... I think I would want to have faculty there for me if I do find that I need more help. Not sure how that works... I really need to do some more reading. 🙂

The interview has an optional mock PBL session from ~1-2 p.m. You are part of the group, not just watching. Once at LECOM and before the end of the day you rank your curricular choices, one being the highest and five the lowest for:

LDP
PBL - Seton Hill
PBL - Erie
ISP
Primary Care Accelerated (the acronym just slipped my mind)

Well I was upgraded to the "Honeymoon Suite." I don't know if this is standard practice on behalf LECOM. The only complain I had was the room had an ashtray in it, meaning it was definitely a smoking room. I couldn't really smell any smoke, but there was a hint. I survived and nothing smelled when I put it on. The room had a king size bed and sofa, shower, and whirlpool tub. I couldn't figure out how to get the tub to work . The bathroom was probably 2X the size of my bedroom. Breakfast was a bit disappointing. I knew it was continental, but I thought there would be more variety. Also, a fire alarm went off but was immediately silenced. I don't know if they found the problem, but we weren't evacuated.

Thanks so much for all the info!!! How was the interview itself?? What type of questions did they ask?? Of whom did the panel consist?? Thanks again!!

congratulations to everyone setting up interviews!

I read somewhere that LECOM's cutoff for MCATs is a 25. does anyone know if there is truth to that?

The interview was me and two interviewers. It was very laid back. The interview is closed file although some interviewers may have taken a peak at your file. Mine didn't so I go that "Tell me about yourself" question to which I had to say a lot of stuff I was involved in because it is significant.

Question for LECOM students... Do you think prossection is affecting your ability to comprehend anatomy? I'm a more hands on person and am kinda bummed that the anatomy lab is prossection. Has this affected you in any way?

We dissect everything, and it takes forever. If they somehow told you that next year will be prossection, then you should be happy. You will learn more, and spend less time cutting away fascia.

Okay great.. thanks a lot!! Good luck with your choice of school.

I am interviewing the 30th as well, should be fun!

To clarify, at the beginning of the academic year most of the bodies were skinned and had their brains removed. However all dissection after that is done by students.

Accepted today! Feels good to know I will be going at least somewhere next year! First 2 interviews i heard back from were waitlists, feels good to have reassurance that I will indeed be a doctor!! 🙂 any students have any thoughts on the school??

Awesome... I have many thoughts on the school, over all it is positive but there are some things I don't like. Mostly the way the exams are given for the OPP class... not cool, poorly written questions. But I like it here

Hey I just got an email for interview date on December 18th. Anyone else on that day? The bad news, it's the day before my Biochem 402 final! I should definitely be calm that day.

Call up the school see if you can reschedule the interview, explain the situation and they'll usually make accommodation for you...

I should get off of this since I have two quizzes and 3 exams within the next six days..... no sleep for the weary.

Hey I got invited for December 18th too. Problem was that I have a separation technologies final on December 17th from 8-10:30PM. No way I'm going to be going from that to Lake Erie at 8:00AM for the start of the interview.

I called them up and they reschedualed me for December 15th. Still sucks that its right around finals, but WOOHOO my first interview!:hardy:

Two months in advance, damnnnnn. Gonna be a long two months wait.

Anyone know what % of interviewed applicants are accepted? How long after your interview do you find out if you're in or not?

Oh an is their applicant portal slow to update? They still say that they don't have any of my LORs.

EDIT: SON OF A BITCH. I have a ****ing gen bio LAB final on December 15th. They didn't list it along with the normal finals schedual like everyone else. **** I'm going to have to call them and change the date. Hope I don't end up pissing them off. What terrible luck.

I just got an email saying that I have an interview on December 19!!!!!!!!! I am so excited!!!! This is my top school choice and I'm sooooooo happy!!!!!!!! 😀DDDDD I just hope everything gooooees well 🙂 Good luck everyone!

I got an invite for December 18. It is during finals week, but I think I can work it so I take my exams early. This is my second invite, and one of my top three schools. I'm really excited, but less excited about the 13 hour drive.

Yeah so I called to reschedule. Turns out they were able to give me an interview date of 11/10, more than a month earlier!! I gotta speed things up a little to be ready but its totally worth it.

If you guys have dates that you wish were moved up, try giving their office a call and seeing if they have cancellations leading to closer dates. The woman I spoke to was really nice.

Who did you speak with? I already called to confirm and I think I spoke with Colleen. I was thinking about just preparing like crazy for my final ahead of time, and my final is on Friday afternoon, so energy wise I should be fine. But if I could have the interview earlier that would be great too.

Does anyone know if they do interviews the week of Nov. 24th? I have off that week for Thanksgiving and it would be perfect to do it then.

Has anyone else gotten an interview invite before you file was complete?

I don't remember the name of the woman I spoke to, but I had to check my schedule and call her back, and she said shes the only person at the front desk.

Also she said they take off at thanksgiving and don't resume interviews until December 4th.

-yes I got an interview for 9/29 before my D.O. letter was in. They said that at least early on in the interviewing process they don't always wait for apps to be complete b/c they wouldn't have enough to interview..

I was invited without the D.O. letter. However, today I just cancelled my interview that was set for Halloween b/c of my acceptance at KCOM, so if anyone wants to reschedule for that day you should call and ask before they fill the spot.

How long were you complete before you received an interview invite? I've only been complete since Monday.

That is my point, my file is not complete. I still don't have my DO letter in because the doc that was supposed to write it has been flaking on me for 2 months now. I'm going to have to find someone else.

I called today and took your interview spot! Thanks!!! I was originally scheduled for Nov 17th but now have the interview on Oct 31st! Anyone else on the 31st?

I am getting an interview soon..how would you guys tackle the question why do you want to be a DO? I feel that my shadowing exp. didn't clear that up....

This has to be something you answer yourself, why a DO and not an MD? You have to research the difference between the two, But I would start with the 10 osteopathic principals and go from there.

Remember the body is a unit and should be treated as such.

I'll be there on Halloween as well, woohoo! I'm looking forward to shopping at Wegman's after the interview.

Does anyone have a link they can post for the LECOM portal? The email for my school crashed and I lost most of the secondary emails!!

So anyone getting in here gonna decline other places just because of tuition? LECOM-erie has just about the cheapest DO tuition in the eastern US, maybe minus instate WVSOM and UMDNJ.

I was accepted to PCOM, and chose LECOM-Erie mainly for financial reasons (about ten grand difference in tuition and much more affordable living expenses). Your medical education debt is a big deal, and these decisions should not be taken lightly. Take a look at this article from CNN Money: Young Doctors in Debt.

So, I just got waitlisted. Okay I guess. Has anyone else received that verdict? Does LECOM waitlist everybody or do some people get rejected outright? If anybody knows thier protocol I'd love to hear it.
I know pretty well the reasons I might not have been out-right accepted (numbers) so it's not a tremendous shock, but I am bummed.
Any info would be great.

Hey Bludiem, I got wait-listed from Erie on 10/13 after interviewing on 10/1. I have no idea how or why. my interview went great, My stats are 3.3 and a 34Q, clearly well above every single DO school avg, let alone LECOM. I have significant shadowing, volunteer, paid hopsital, and reasarch experience. Sometimes med school admisions makes no sense.

Anyone know how many come off the waitlist or its its rolling? any insight would be great.

LECOM does reject people outright. If I were you, I'd contact Amy in a few months and talk to her and see how things are going. She's great.

I am going to send in my application within the week! It is fairly late in the process though! Although I feel my EC, and numbers make me very competitive, I am a bit scared I won't get an interview since I am submitting so late.

dont worry oncochris, its not that late yet. i just submitted my lecom secondary a week ago and they gave me an interview invite on friday! you still have time.

The portal says my decision is in the mail. Although I don't think I'll be attending LECOM, going 3 for 3 on acceptances would be a big ego/morale boost. Hell, we all deserve it!

I'll give you my address, you can just forward it along to me. Along with a copy of your driver's license and social security card too.

Wow that quick a turn around?! Every other school has been taking forever. I have only heard back from one school. What are your stats like? I have 3.957 (cumulative), 3.92 (science) and 4.0 (non-science) and I got a 30R (all 10's) on my MCAT. I just want to get accepted somewhere and get this stressful process finished!
