Which of the following noncollagenous protein components BEST characterizes dentin matrix?

1. Laminin
2. Vimentin
3. Phosphophoryn
4. Osteonectin
5. Fibronectin[/QUOTE]
Answer should be DPP ( Dentin phosphophoryn) and DSP ( Dentin Sialoprotein). 90% of dentin organic matrix is compiosed of collagen. DPP is a highly phosphorylated protein and hydrophilic in character. It is capable of binding a large amount of calcium, facilitating the initial mineralization of the organic collagen frame. Proteoglycans, such as decorin, bigclycan, fibromodulin and lumican, which carry glycosaminoglycan (GAG) carbohydrate side chains within their structures, comprise another predominant part of non collagenous organic matrix

Which of the following could be beneficial in reducing edema in the arms of women who have had radical mastectomy with removal of axial lymph nodes?

1. Hypertensive agents
2. Avoidance of all diuretic agents
3. Increase interstitial oncotic pressure
4. Decrease interstitial hydrostatic pressure
5. Administration of a plasma volume
😕.. you could either decrease the interstitial oncotic pressure or increase the interstitial hydrostatic pressure.. so that rules out options 3 and 4. ; giving a hypertensive agent does not seem to be a good option.. i think 5) administration of a plasma volume expander which increases the plasma oncotic pressure is the right option........ am i right ???

I agree with you on plasma volume expander option.

agree with u 100% on this and voulme expander quetion.👍
ur start is very good, i think u can give ur exam in Jan.

Hey thanx teethie, actually you and cindrella have been a great motivation, and this thread has given me a perspective and insight into hw much is expected to be able to take the exam
Have'nt even started with DADH as yet!!

for anatomy, decks and and Nbde is enough, but for the other subjects it's better to go more deep, as you are studying for USMLE.😀
the asda will help a lot.
that's my opinion.

pl answer this.................i am not getting the right and left side....😕😕😕

View attachment 15582

I believe that the answer is maxillary first left premolar because the palatal root of maxillary 1st premolar tips distally, and it has two canals which is for the maxillary first premolar.
The reference I used is a small book by James Fuller.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Nice explanation miles to go
first i knew its amx ist prem. i guess that the trick whether its right or left ,,but since u explained it now its clear

By the way there is no more pictures in NBDE1 ..i mean u dont have to identify it anymore. but it is good to know it it anyway.

thanks a ton miles to go and wdent. I was also getting it as left max 1 st premolar but asda key is right sided premolar.
thats why i posted it. so may be this is an error.
wdent, thanks idid not know there are no more identification pictures, well nice to hear that.🙂

Have a doubt here
Can we get glycogen from pyruvate or palmitic acid !! i mean which is NOT involved in glycogen synthesis !

another things what the nerve that is responsible for circumduction!!-- is it axillary n. Yes or no ?
Thanks !

Please someone answer this😕

teethie n wdent, me too 😕, Have not read Carbohydrates.. there's something mentioned on the role of palmitic A in gluconeogenesis and conversion to pyruvate... pg 186 Lippincott..
How much time did it take you guys to finish reading the books... have'nt been able to read even the decks as yet!! :-(((

Can we get glycogen from pyruvate or palmitic acid !! i mean which is NOT involved in glycogen synthesis ! pyruvate is easily converted to glucose and then to glycogen,eg in muscles.but im not sure about palmitic acid.

another things what the nerve that is responsible for circumduction!!-- is it axillary n. Yes or no ? no idea:scared:,can u pls put the whole question??

thanks anaita ,but for now since u have already started, first u finish decks and then u get to the books to get concepts more clear.
idid not read books , had no time to read them but its good to read.

Thanks (Anata n R19 )

@R19 This is not a Quest. its just a doubt was readin somewhere that u can do circumduction @the shoulder,,want to know what nerve causes it ..
Thanks anywway..

Which of the following represents the pH of a solution that has 10-5 M concentration of OH- ion?

A. 5
B. 7
C. 9
D. Determine only if the pKa is known.
E. Determinable only if the base composition is known.
What would be your answer to this one, i thought it was E, but it's given as C

@Anaita
Here is ur answer :
Kw=ph+Poh
therefor kw always = 14

So do the math now and substitue,u will get ---->10*14-10*5 = 9

Hope its clear now ! pls corret me if iam wrong !

Thanks....!!! Could you also put jot down the other relevant formulae in Biochem; so that there is a standard reference chart we could all refer to; and in case anything is missed out then could be added on to the list?? :luck:

hi anaita, this attachment is from decks.

View attachment zymogens.doc

also anaita for the question:
- A dietary iodine deficiency will INCREASE the secretion of which of the following?
A. Thyroxine
B. Thyroglobulin...this is the answer acc to decks card#106. guys, pl confirm this....
C. Triiodothyronine
D. Thyroid stimulating hormone

thanx teethie.. could you plz list the zymogens and the enzymes that activate them??

OK, I checked Ganong's Physiology, Harrison's Internal Medicine and many other sources... 🙁( no straight forward answers...so here goes.
1. Iodine deficiency upregulates the Na-I Symporter in the basal membrane of the Thyroid follicular cells resulting in increased uptake of the Iodine and thus increased production of Thyroglobulin.
2. Iodine deficiency causes reduction in thyroid hormone production--> increased TRH production--> increased TSH production--> stimulation and enlargement of thyroid gland (Goitre). Obviously TSH production is increased. Thyroid hormone levels may be restored to normal by the hyperfunctioning thyroid (Euthyroid Goitre).
3. Some studies have indicated the rise in thyroglobulin levels in response to iodine depletion takes place even before the TSH levels begin to rise and thus are better for diagnosis.

Thanx teethie, but was looking for the specific enzymes that activate these zymogens..., so as we go by the Gi and other systems the answers will unfold.... 🙂
The more i read, the more i realise hw little i know and hw much more it will take to be able to take the exam :scared:

thank u anaita for the confirmation. abt zymogens, that all what i came across so far. u r right, there is lots to read......
can anyone please put the mechansim of action of steroids in reducing inflammation???

Palmitic Acid ( C16) which is a saturated fatty Acid; cannot give back glucose, in the postabsorptive state as fatty acids get converted to AcetylCo A; which in turn gets back into the TCA. One minor exception are the odd number carbon fattyA which yield a small amt of propionyl Co A that is gluconeogenic
Correct me if i'm wrong

Congrats Svetlana!!
