Hey bro! Things are great. just finished my b-day festivities. Moved to the Gap. I will definitely return the favor and show you around TN as you did in SA. Hope things are well for you too. Give me a shout when you get to town. Maybe you can help get me off my a** to get running again.

Im gonna have fun the next couple of weeks, Ive got to do about 60 hours of CE to keep up with my ems license before I move down to Tn or Im gonna loose it. And if I wanna transfer it down to Tn I found out that they dont have state to state reciprication and I have to get nationally registered which is another pain in the ass cause Im gonna have to take a full refresher course before Im allowed to take the nremt test because Ive had my license too long. Here in Illinois we didnt have to take the nremt test until like 2 years ago so Im grandfathered into the system here but if I wanna work anywhere else I guess im SOL lol hahahahahah....

I haven't gotten any of the emails lately. I've got to call Jody today and switch email accounts as I no longer have access to my school account and that's where they've been sending everything. R u guys serious about not having a building??? That will suck, but oh well. I have to say I'm not much of a runner either, but I will definitly be needing a lifting partner when I get to school so hopefully I'll see some of you guys in the gym. 9 more days until the move and things are starting to get a little hectic around here. I'll let you guys know when we get down there and hopefully a few of you all can get over to the house for dinner or poker one night. The wife's not so good, but she likes playing anyway.

You will also need to take the IV add-on course, so you will actually become an EMT-IV, since Tennessee does not use EMT-Bs.

Also, for those living in the Med. Apts.....i forget how the drive was from school to the apts., was is bikeable??

Yeah, it wouldn't be bad biking from the apartments to school. Definitely doable.

Congrats Kicia on signing a new contract. Good luck with the shoots!!!

I have not received any email regarding the building not being done until October. During my interview, Dr. Leo said that priority was given to the anatomy and OMM labs since there is no other place to do those. Those rooms have to be done by the start of school, otherwise our whole schedule gets messed up since labs can't be held anywhere else. I can imagine that the whole building won't be done Aug. 1, but at least the labs should, maybe even the lecture rooms, but other than those, who knows.

Count me and the Mrs in for a game or two. We are moving around the 15th or so. Maybe McDreamy is going loco in our Texas heat - that building better be done!

We should write petitions to the DCOM admins about the dress code policy:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17239746/
According to a recent study from The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, patients report identical levels of satisfaction regardless of how their doctors were dressed. While no doctors wore bell bottoms or leisure suits, the study did track 20 doctors in a variety of dress: surgical scrubs, casual attire, or formal business attire with white lab coats.

1,116 patients were surveyed after their visits with the physicians. All the doctors were new to the patients to avoid bias from previous encounters and relationships. The patients were asked about the doctors' competence, professionalism, their sense of comfort and confidence in the physician, and whether they would return to or recommend the doctor to others.

No questions were asked about the doctor's clothing.

At the end of the study, patients reported identical levels of satisfaction with their doctors in scrubs, casual attire, and professional white coats.

Had they extended the study, they would also have found much higher levels of germs on the physicians wearing white coats and ties.

Hey all,

I have a favor to ask of those of you already there in TN. I a moving in from out of state (way out of state) and I am having trouble finding a place, with the time change and all. I keep missing houses when they come up. I need a 3 beedroom house because I have 2 kids. If you see one in the paper this weekend could you PM me the info? By the time they come out on line they are taken. I'm really starting to get worried and picture me and my kids living out of my moving van:eek::scared:

Thanks for any help!

Top two floors will NOT be done for sure.

Our main classroom will for sure be done...everything else will be worked on as we go.
I think "Whitecoat Ceremony" is set in Oct for a reason .

The PA program and other RN Master's will be on top two floors and they will/might start 2008/9. We might never see the last floor finished while we're there.

Oh well.... We're the 1st one's !!

PS I did not know that our PC/Tablet's where free !!:love: DCOM got a grant that covered Tablets for med school. Next yr's students will have to pay 3-5k on top of tuition.:laugh::laugh:

I plan to exercise/jog in the mornings before leaving for class, but I'll be living in Knoxville.

I gotta get into shape....or at least better shape!

Just finally started a long vacation, and wouldn't you know it....it's raining at the lake. Oh well...better than workin!

I'm still trying to decide whether or not to sell the Jet Ski. Does anyone else have a ski or a boat or some sort of water toy? They're more fun with friends...

As for the building...the last I heard was that staff is supposed to move into their offices the week after the 4th of July Holiday. Not sure if that's changed or not.

I think I might have been one of the last few that got to go inside and check things out. :)

I'd be willing to help with gas money =). I know how expensive it is. I've spent a LOT of time on the lake this summer (with the exception of the past 2 weeks) learning how to wakeboard and just enjoying being out there!

dr.kicia: Sounds like you are totally on top of things. I was wondering if you got your score yet. I remember how it felt to wait. :scared: LOL! You will be fine, don't stress.:):luck:

shasta9599: I don't read the paper much; I usually look online. But, I will be sure to let you know if I see anything.

I do love my house, but.... We had thunder storms all day today, which was great because we needed the rain. The only trouble is that our roof started leaking in two places and the lightening hit my coffee pot and fried it. This was a very expensive percolator pot and I am totally bummed because I love my coffee. And when I say fried, I mean it went up into the pot and made the coffee boil and the pot was burning hot. Scary stuff!

I had a terrible day today besides that though. One of my horses has cancer. Actually, he is not my horse. He was supposed to be here for the summer and belongs to a friend of mine, but now he is going to stay so that I can take care of him. :( He is a sweet old boy too and I am really upset. I had the biopsy done last week and it is a C-cell carcinoma which affects the thyroid and secretes calcitonin. So, if anyone knows anything about that, I would really love more information. My vet is consulting with the equine oncologist at UT and getting back to me in a few days. So, I don't know what the prognosis or treatment options are. But, I am going to do what I can. :luck:

Yes, I am totally obsessed with my horses and no, I don't want to be a vet. :p

Oh wait, I forgot something. Can I come down to DCOM and get some free OMM for my back? :D I have a bulging disc at L5-S1 and went riding two days ago and did something to it and now I can't bend over. I used to ride in a brace and I think I better go get a new one. LOL! But, in the meantime, a little OMM would be great!!! :D

Hey, just a thought here, but why don't you place an ad about what you are looking for? I put one in the Cumberland Trading Post for after school care and got ten calls on the first day it ran. Try these sites. You can do it all online.

I'm in for the lake. I've got a buddy here @ home that just brought his new boat home tonight and we're only going to be able to go one time before we leave. So, anyone around with a boat who wants to ride on an old jet ski (not too old) let me know. Or if you guys just want to hang out @ the lake for a day I've got a jet ski. It gets a little boring with just that especially when the kids are around, but I'm sure we'll be up for letting loose after everything gets settled with the move in. We'll be leaving next Sunday and I thinking we're going to take our time. Probably stop in Nashville for the night and take the kids to some fun stuff...so moving in starting Monday evening. If you anyone wants to get ahold of me send me a PM and maybe we'll set something up for a few weeks down the road. Later

Thank you...thank you...thank you Doctor Mom. Those links gave me more places to look. I have been checking the Middlesboro newspaper on line but they don't update until Weds morning and everything is gone by then since the actual paper changes on Sunday. Placing the ad is a great idea I'll try it. I'm sorry to hear about your horse, I just lost my dog of 14 years so I feel for you truly. I wish I knew something about the cancer. Let me know what I can do.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I plan to roll into town around the 19th and look forward to meeting you all!!

everyone, I think we should all be interested in the developments of the new D.O. schools in the US lately. Obviously, we are going to one, and I think DCOM is superior in its start because of our large investment in the new medical building and faculty. However, the proposed new DO school in Colorado is a FOR-PROFIT school, which was banned by the AOA in the early 1900's due to the conflicts of interest. There is a lot of talk amongst docs who oppose the idea of this school, and think that its emergence (and possibly success) could spring even more for-profit schools - which would lead to a watered down DO population. There is a forum here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=417038 from the Osteopathic Student section. Read over it and take a look. We are from a new DO school, and I think our performance in the next 4 years will weigh heavily on other peoples perspectives.

What do ya'll think about this

Froggie - I agree completely about our performance weighing heavily. In fact that is one of the things that attracted me to DCOM. When our board scores come out we will be judged more harshly than any other school @ the time b/c we will have the first board scores. This will either be fantastic for our faculty, school, and us or it could be devastating. I thrive under pressure and I think this will drive me to prepare more for these than I might have had I gone somewhere else.

As far as the new for-profit school...I read the entire post and I have to say I was bothered by the idea of it. I understand that there is a shortage and that our profession needs more physicians, but I don't know where we draw the line. We are attending a new school, that went through the proper channels and has reached all the levels of accredediation it has needed to as well as having all of the top of the line technology we will have access to...that being so I feel great about the level of education I will receive @ DCOM. I'm not convinced that a medical schools whose main goal is to make a profit, not educate physicians, will have these things and I think this will ill prepare them for a career as a physician. I feel this is a bad idea and I oppose this school from opening. I understand that good may come from it and everything may workout just fine, but I feel that the potential for this school to harm our profession far outweighs the potential for it to help our profession.

I compared DCOM to almost every school i applied to and end of the day i was so convinced that DCOM's faculty, brand new school, technology, cost of tuition, cost of living, incentives (tablet pc ;), med student apts etc), curriculum, block based tests (3-4 weeks apart) and last but not the least DCOM's potential clearly beat out a lot of old and new schools. I am convinced that i will be happy at DCOM, it will only be sweeeter if i could land a rotation spot here in the east coast and possibly also match at a surgical residency program.

So I've begun packing and I'm moving down there in two weeks. My god do I hate packing...

Anyways, our outlets started sparking like whoa tonight and we had to call a maintenance guy to come and fix them. How much would that have sucked if we went out tonight and everything caught on fire? Man I can't wait to move out of this apartment...

I've received all my books!

I still have a question -I think this was mentioned earlier -where is the main book when it comes to anatomy? I mean, the books listed are review and structures but no clinical correlation. I hope that some of the web stuff they have listed has resources for learning this type of stuff. I do know that Gray's is online, but it doesn't have clinical correlation.

On the other hand, there are tons of books for MFM  But by far my fav is Bate's Guide...so exciting.

I despise waiting....I want all of the syllabi posted now!

Hey! Did anyone do that online medical terminology class thing yet? I just did it. I thought that was something that we had to hand in, but it was all online. I copied and pasted all the answers to save them, but I don't know if we have to hand anything in on that. Hmmm.... LOL! Where is everyone? :D

What are we at now....29 days and counting? I need to order the rest of my books. Getting excited! :biglove:

Hey guys,

I got a call from CCOM accepting me off the waitlist, so now I have a decision to make  My head is spinning so much, I have no idea what I want. I absolutely love DCOM and all that it offers, but my goal is to get a residency in Chicago, so it seems natural to go to CCOM. I prefer systems-based learning at DCOM, but the rotations are so strong at CCOM. Either way, I know that DCOM is a great school and that all of you are awesome. I just don't know which way to go. I thought my mind was made up a few weeks ago as to what I would choose if the call ever came, and now that it has, I don't know. I have to make my decision by tomorrow, so I will let you all know what I decide.

It's a tough choice..CCOM is a good school no doubt but if you strongly believe that chicago is where you wanna do your rotations and perhaps your residency as well then CCOM should be a no brainer. DCOM will be a great school but choose what's best for you..i would have def gone to PCOM if i ever got an acceptance coz that's the best fit for me but DCOM is def a great fall back option for anyone.

nascardoc....

That's great news!! Congrats! Whatever you decide to go with, you will become a great doctor. True, CCOM's class won't be as cool or as badass as ours, but if you keep in touch, we could make you an honorary DCOMMER.... maybe =)

Again, congrats!! and don't worry, either way, they are both great schools. =) ... trust me, this is a good problem that you have.

:biglove:

I completed the medical terminology class online...pretty easy. I didn't save the answers though. :(

Is anyone considering helping out in the anatomy lab in the next few weeks?

OMG!!!!! Well, first of all, congrats!!! That is a really tough decision to make and I don't envy you for having to make it, but I am sure that you will make the right one and that it will all work out the way it is supposed to. Good luck with that!!!:luck:

LOL! I don't think you had to save them. I just did it just in case.:D

I can only help out in the anatomy lab if my kids can come along to help out too. My husband works crazy hours and all the time and they aren't in daycare/school yet. :p

Yea... so if I forgot to place my order for the OMM tshirt and shorts by the 29th do you think it'd be too late to do it tomorrow? I mean they can't really say no if they're going to be pulling people off the waitlist, right? I can't BELIEVE I forgot to order them. I even RSVP'ed for the bbq... +pissed+
