I hate this connection!!! LOL! I am sure you were fine on the MCAT.😀:luck:

OK specialty results, (which took FOREVER to get on this d@mn dial-up connection): :meanie:

Rank Specialty Score
1 pediatrics 49
2 physical med & rehabilitation 47
3 occupational med 46
4 nephrology 46
5 dermatology 46
6 allergy & immunology 46
7 general internal med 45
8 radiology 45
9 obstetrics/gynecology 44
10 neurology 44
11 rheumatology 44
12 family practice 43

EEK!!!! There is no way this test is right!!!! I took another one on a different site before and it was completely different. My FM is all the way at 12!!! LOL! But, peds is first. I would NEVER do #s 2, 3, 4, 5, or 8. You couldn't pay me enough money to go into one of them. YUCK! I guess the fact that IM, peds, and OB/GYN are in the top ten is a good thing, but I have no idea why FM is all the way at #12. It ranked at the top in a different test before. I usually get psych near the top too. LOL! Well, that was fun.😀

LOL...i thought the same thing. I had FM as a 35😱 and i seriously am thining about it so i don't know. But i guess doing rotations will be very helpful in picking what feels right.

I took it again...

1. EM 50
2. Urology 48
3. Ortho 48
4. Radiology 47
5. Anesth 46

Same results every time. I had FM and Peds as my bottom two. Ob/Gyn, something I dont think i'd like scored in the 40's. Most IM specialties were in the 30's. Looks like I have to do real well in school (and on the COMLEX/USMLE) if I want to do any of these later on...fun. The test is not 100% accurate, but its still a rough idea of where you fit personality wise. A lot of us will change our minds about specialities, especially when we start rotations.

Hey fellow DCOMers,

If I plan to borrow less then the proposed 52 grand, is it better to subtract it from Stafford or Grad plus???
thanks

Anyone have any new pics/ updates on the school and apts.???

Subtract from the Grad Plus.

When I get home from work, I will post a pic or two from my trip a couple of weeks ago. They are just the outside of the building.

Definately Grad Plus.

I just got a house! After seeing 30 houses, this is the best one and we were very picky. It's beautiful and located on Lincoln Memorial Estates. It is closer to the school than the dorms and I NEED AT LEAST ONE ROOMMATE!

If you've already put down a housing deposit, we can give you $50 bucks off the first four months rent. It will probably ultimately be cheaper than living in the dorms also.

HOUSE INCLUDES: 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen, front patio, large back porch, two car garage, living room, fireplace, washer and dryer, all appliances, my dad and i will be fully furnishing it

Large bedroom (13.5'x10')rent is $700 + util
Small bedroom (10'x10')rent is $500+ util

Each room will have full size bed, dresser, and desk included. Both bedrooms open on to front patio for excellent views. Surrounded by hills and trees on three sides. Large bedroom gets priority use of the other spot in the garage.

I have tons of pics from every angle, but I can't remember how to post them. So either tell me how or PM me and I will send them to you. I"m very laid back and fun to live with and I also keep things pretty clean. Male and female are both welcome to apply.

Please PM me if you have any interest or want any info. I can also receive messages on facebook.
My name is Blake Spiegel. I posted album of house on fbook

Rent is negotiable and subject to decrease if both rooms are rented

Hello everyone. I just not figured out how to become a member, etc of SDN and join a forum~ I will also be starting DCOM in august~ I am a local~ Just wanted to say hey and join the crowd!!

Welcome to the DCOM family! I am guessing you were an original acceptance, not a waitlister?

Here are two pics from our trip of the DCOM building. The brick work is done on the 3rd side, so they only have one, short small side left. The building is looking really good. I can't wait to the see the inside.

Hey Y'all!

I was wondering what are you all doing with your kids from August 1st until the kids' schools begin? Are there any day camps or anything? Also, when do the elementary schools start in Tennessee? Lastly, to which schools are you semding your kids? I have a daughter who will be in 2nd grade, and I'm looking for any info regarding good schools in the area.

Thanks everyone🙂

I was up at Harrogate last night and walked through "our house" which we bid on, making a todo list. Purchase is a go and we're looking forward to starting the paint/cleaning process.

Walked through 1st and 2nd floor of med school... it will be a toss-up whether construction is done or not🙂. We might be living with construction our 1st year. For sure 3rd and 4th floor will not get done. They where finishing up the elevator when we walked through. The view from 2nd story "rec-area" is awesome.

Went and looked at some rooms at Ramada/ errr LMU Inn😎. The one-room apartments are just that, and very small :meanie::laugh:. But the pool is still their. If you where to put in a king bed😱... you might be able to walk around it.

But they've really made it look nice !!

PS I'm pretty sure I'll end up with FP/IM. My brother is already doing FP and has a great family life. He was working 4 days a wk and still making a decent living. He now works 3 full + 2 half days.😍😍

So, I took the test, and my top 2 choices were in my top 5 according to them
1. OB/GYN - probably not
2. Thoracic Surgery - pretty cool
3. EM - most likely, my top choice
4. Aerospace Med - pretty cool, too
5. Orthopaedic Surgery - my 2nd choice

Not too shabby, a lot of repeat questions, and I think I answered them differently each time based on the question proceeding them.

I thought everybody might like to know that there is an updated book list!!!

There are pics of the apartments on the website http://www.lmunet.edu/dcom/students/apts_gallery.htm

As far as things near Harrogate, you can find everything you need in Middlesboro, KY (5 minutes from DCOM), New Tazewell, TN (20 min from DCOM), and Jacksboro/LaFollette, TN (40 min from DCOM). If you want anything like malls, National restuarant chains (i.e. Chili's, Friday's, Ruby Tuesday) you have to go to Knoxville. There is a lot of talk about Chili's, Ruby Tuesday, another restaurant going into Jacksboro in the near future, as well as a Lowe's.

There is a grocery store and I believe a pharmacy in Harrogate. I know Middlesboro offers everything that Harrogate is missing. Middlesboro is about a 5 minute drive. Tazewell (15 minutes) offers a lot as well. And don't forget where everyone seems to think they will get their rotations, Knoxville, about 1 hour away.

Civilization is a matter of perspective. It is no New York City, but there is a lot that the area offers. There will also be the 150 new classmates and families and the faculty and staff of the school. I particularly enjoy the cattle just down from my house in Harrogate, but great conversationalists they are not.

I would love to!!! I love showing around this area. I have lived here for 22.5 years. My name is Amanda, so if you have any questions just let me know!!!

i was in the apartments just a few weeks ago. The double room is a good size, but obviously you won't be guaranteed to get it by yourself. The single room is basically dominated by the bed and is a little tighter. After seeing that room, I knew I would be better off in a house with roomies for a couple of years. anyway, enough on that.

there is a kroger just up the highway in m-boro and i believe a pharmacy there. there is also a little mall with a few stores and a 4 screen movie theater. harrogate doesn't have much food to offer, but there is a great pizza place called Oasis near the school.

Tazewell has a few more restaurants and people there rave about this place I believe is called the Capitol Grille. Hope that helps

There is a pharmacy in Harrogate. There are pharmacies in Middlesboro, Tazewell, and New Tazewell also.
Grocery Stores: If you live in Harrogate, it's probably better to just run over to Middlesboro because there is no tax on food. Around the Tazewell/ New Tazewell area: I do my grocery shopping at Ingles mostly. There is also a Food City.
I love living in this area. I moved away to live with my dad for 8years but still visited here during breaks, and am REALLY glad to be back HOME. The people around here are really nice~ There are things to do. Sometimes you just may have to drive to Knoxville, etc. Like during the winter, its only about 2.5-3 hours away from ski resorts in North Carolina and during the summer the lake is only 10-20 minutes, depending on where you live.
As far as restaurants, there really aren't many at all. There's the Old Town Grill in Tazewell, and El Marachi, but thats pretty much it. But you can always drive to Knoxville (hour away) or Morristown (30 minutes), etc.

Depends on where you are going to live. If you live in Claiborne County then schools start on Aug. 13. If you live in Knox county then schools start on Aug 9. If you live in Campbell county (Jacksboro) they start on Aug. 10.

There are two elementry schools in Harrogate -Ellen Myers and Forgeridge
http://www.claibornecountyschools.com/ellenmyers/
http://www.claibornecountyschools.com/forgeridge/

My kids go to a christian school in Knoxville, so I am no help there. I do think docmom's kids are going to schools in the area though.

As for day camp, I have no idea. I'm sure there are some around and there is also the daycare on the LMU campus (not sure how old they go up to in the summer and aftercare).

Good luck.

Not to burst your bubble, but thoracic surgery is becoming less popular due to lack of patients. The malpractise insurance is skyrocketing for thoracic, cardiovascular surgeons..i heard from my cousin who recently matched into GS that he rather go into plastics than choose something like thoracic. Early 90's people had to open up your chest to operate on you, now a lot of the patients are being treated by cardiologists who do less open chest surgeries instead do a lot more invasive procedures. In general today's surgeons are being trained to use invasive procedures and in the process Cardio thoracic surgeons are taking a big hit. You should look through the surgery threads on SDN, it's amazing how CT is considered as a dead field. I actually want to be a General surgeon, and i may even consider plastics or pediatrics if i get GS but it's a long shot.

I just noticed something in the studio apartments.... Where and how are you supposed to wash and store your dishes?? I guess I won't be cooking a lot. Also, has anyone who is staying there heard from the school yet? When do we get assigned rooms?

Oh and CONGRATS to you froggie with your new baby boy!!!!

you are definitely a surgery guy, thats crazy. good luck (nail that USMLE and its all good)

The apartments seemed less finished than the med school. But if it not's filling up they will probably have "some" done for sure. But who knows... those greeks pulled off the Olympics when 2 wks before it looked like every other project was half done.😎😎😎

haha def man. I will be working my butt off..infact i already bought some USMLE stuff.

Oh and CONGRATS to you froggie with your new baby boy!!!!

Thank you so much. He is eating right now, and he is the cutest thing I could ever imagine. Having a child is by far the most amazing experience of my life😀

You better study hard, ace your clinicals, etc. Plastics is going to be tough already, plus you're coming fom a new school. I thought about doing it at one point, but I think I am too picky to actually do it. It would be real sweet to have a DCOM guy match plastics, maybe some ortho too - that would put our name to the top.

Actually there are some more elementary schools in the area:
in the Tazewell, New Tazewell area there is:
~Springdale Elementary School (K-6)
~TNT Primary School (K-4)
~The Alpha School (which is a headstart)
~Heritage Baptist Academy (K4 - 6th) (tuition is 2,000 a year)
~New Tazewell United Methodist Preschool (a VERY good pre-school, in fact there is a wait list so if you have children not quiet the pre-school age, but want to put them in one, it might be a good idea to go ahead and put them on the wait list...I go to church there and people are ALWAYS wanting their kids in it)
~Midway Elementary School (K-8)
~ SMMS (5-8)
~Claiborne High School (9-12)

and that's it regarding schools in the Tazewell - New Tazewell area. AND it's NOT a long drive every day. I live AT the city limits of New Tazewell and I went to HY Livesay for middle school and taught at J. Frank White Academy (ON LMU campus) this past year and its only like 15.3 miles and it never takes me MORE than 20 minutes to get to LMU campus.

More new people...WELCOME AND CONGRATS!!!! 😀 I am in Speedwell (between Lafollette and Harrogate off of 63), so anyone in the area is welcome to come out and visit. I will have a child at Powell Valley Elementary in August. He is only 5 and starting kindergarten, so he will be at the daycare with the babies until school starts for him. My issue now is trying to figure out what to do with him when he gets out of school at 2:30 and I am there until 5:00, but I am working on that now.

As for grocery stores and civilization, there are plenty of places to go. I prefer to go to Middlesboro, but we are about an equal distance to both there and Lafollette. I have already gotten used to the quiet and minimal traffic out here and Lafollette stresses me out a bit now. TOO MANY PEOPLE!!! LMAO!!! The tax thing is a great incentive to go to Middlesboro too. I don't mind Tazewell either though. I prefer to go further away from civilization and Lafollette is heading back towards Knoxville. 😀😛 Did I mention how much I love it out here? :biglove: You couldn't pay me with all the horses in the world and a million dollars to move back to New York now. I am in heaven. 😍

Cell bio book? I LOVE CELL BIO!!!!

Update on the animals. Star is going to be just fine. He looks great now. He had an abscessed hoof, but the vet was out today and he will be just fine. Pete is fat and adorable and loves to roll in the mud. He had a blast today because it rained. Now he looks like he is a little bay pony instead of a black and white one. My son keeps asking me when we are getting cows and chickens. LOL! Oh, and my husband says I can get a goat. 😀 Fred is going to have to be neutered soon because everytime the other dog, Dozer, lies down he jumps on him and...well, you know. 🙄

ANYONE IN THE AREA LIVING OR VISITING....PM ME AND I WILL GIVE YOU MY NUMBER AND YOU CAN COME OUT AND VISIT. 🙂

Oh yea, and camps at LMU are for "older" kids. I can't remember the age, but I know my son was too young at 5. I don't know of any others in the area.

OK, think I got everything covered. TTYS!

I finally get to relax a bit! 🙂

The Mrs.'s last day of work was yesterday and after a stressful week of work/living with the inlaws, we loaded up all the critters in our vehicles along with a bunch of stuff, and I'm currently posting while looking out over the Lake of the Ozarks from the deck at the cabin. I could get used to this! 🙂

It also appears we got a house and will be moving in around mid-July. Driveway gets poured next week, and even though it's new construction, we got a bunch off add ons. It's a house we can stay in forever if we want to!

Welcome to all the newcomers!

Only 9 days of work left for me, but my last day isn't until July 9th!

I would love to!!! I love showing around this area. I have lived here for 22.5 years. My name is Amanda, so if you have any questions just let me know!!!

I think I know you. 😎 We took the MCAT together!! Organic class bites. 4 weeks = 1 semester. What a drag.

In Middlesboro, the movies are $1.50...all the time. Another great pizza place is Godfather's Pizza behind Hardee's in Harrogate. LMU students can purchase a medium pizza for $5.99.

By the way, the good restaurant in Tazewell is Old Town Grill.

haha def man. I will be working my butt off..infact i already bought some USMLE stuff.

I highly recommend first aid if you dont have it already. ive been thumbing through it, awesome book. The medmaster series is good too, but nothing compares to first aid.

The prime rib is very good.

Fern Lake is a fishing lake...Membership is 150/yr.😀
No camping.😡

But plenty of nice places in the smokies.

is it weird that gray's anatomy is not on the book list for the first semester?

I have had several people tell me that Godfather's is a great pizza place, so we got pizza there the other night. LOL! I don't think y'all have ever had good pizza down here. It was awful!!! 😛 There are a lot of great things that the south has to offer, but pizza is not one of them. :meanie::laugh: (No offense intended to anyone. 🙂)

is it weird that gray's anatomy is not on the book list for the first semester?

I don't think so. Although it is a "classic," nothing beats the combo of Rohen and Netters. Rohen is actual cadaver pics, so that is a huge help. Netters is nice b/c it does cover some details that Rohen does not and it is easier to distinguish the anatomy b/c it is colored cartoon-like pics. I don't think I've ever seen a med student tell others to get Gray's or that they even used it. I've looked at it and I don't like it. All the pics are black and white drawings, so that doesn't help much. Rohen is the best choice.

Speaking of books, I've priced them out for the 1st semester and they are around $710. I am going to get a couple of usmle and comlex review books to help with studying, so I am at about $825. They still have one more class to pick out a book for, I believe.

For the review books, I am getting First Aid for the USMLE ($36 on amazon), First Aid for the Comlex ($43), and Comlex Review of Clinical Anatomy and OMM ($38). THe nice thing about the FA books (at least for the USMLE for sure and I would imagine for the Comlex) is that they are now system-based books, which helps us. I read about a lot of students using these books to help them study, so I figured I'd give it a shot too. I'll grab the 2008 edition when it comes out too. The books aren't expensive, so why not have them as another resource?

😆 😆 😆

We Chicagoians are the same way about our pizza. When we were driving around with our realtor, she would say that, "This place has good pizza...it's not Chicago pizza, but..." and Jen and I would just laugh. Our realtor has never had it before and would love to try it. She's had "Chicago-style" pizza from Pizza Hut, but Jen and I just laughed and said that it is nowhere near the same. She was really surprised that the sauce is on top in deepdish. It took our realtor a second to let that one sink in  We love her anyway!!! Actually, once we end up with a house, we are going to send her some Chicago-style deepdish pizza from, perhaps, the best pizza place in Chicago - Gino's East. It is soooooo good and we will miss it. 🙁

I know good pizza and Oasis makes a solid effort. I can't say much for Godfather's because we didn't try it. give Oasis a whirl....nothing can really match a NYC pie, tho.

The difference between Netter, Rohen and Grays...Netters and Rohen are Atlases...Grays is an anatomy book a"manual". Rohen and Netter is just what you said...great pics and something to look at when you are memorizing your anatomy...Grays explains what it is you are looking at...teaches you anatomy. But you are correct, most med students recommend the atlas over the "manual".

And BTW...Ginos East is the best!
