I've done enough driving around here and haven't seen too much construction. Chicago is the construction capital of the world - it is nuts. They just completed a 2 year project of repaving lanes, only to tear it up to add an additional lane 😕 The Dan Ryan Expressway (main highway leading to Chicago from the south suburbs) should have its 2-year construction project done within the next month or so. God I don't miss that!!! There is nothing like driving 30 miles on nice roads without having a single stop light - even though I won't be having that drive much longer since I am moving to Harrogate in about 2 weeks. That 2 mile drive is going to be wonderful - and the fact that I will have to fill up with gas maybe once a month!!!

Congrats to all of you who have been accepted so far!!!
I drove home through LaFollette. It was such a nice drive after you get out of town and have nothing but a long stretch of highway to deal with (there's only 3 stop lights in Harrogate anyway though). If I get into DCOM, my wife and I are planning to live in LaFollette so that she can work in Knoxville and I will have about the same distance of a drive that I currently have to work.

How do you like living in LaFollete Nascardoc?

So I was a bit hesitant about LMU and going there for med school before yesterday. All I can say after being to campus and seeing the building and everything that is being done is....

Oh. My. Freaking. God. It is so absolutely amazing there. I cant put it into words. Everything that the faculty and administrators are doing is definitely top notch. First class all the way. And all the equipment and OMM tables and all is unbelievable. It was towards the middle of my list before, but now, its definitely at the top if not number one! I loved every bit of yesterday and would love to go to DCOM. Close to home/friends/family/my puppy and its still in the mountains. I cant get out how impressed I was over the whole experience yesterday.

Now I just have to wait on my last LOR to get in so I can hopefully get a call/letter from the Adcom telling me I can come next August 😀.

i have never been to TN, so i have no idea what to expect. i enjoy the outdoors, so is their plenty of hiking, camping, skiing around?

also, what is the town of harrogate like socially? are there a decent amount of bars, coffee shops, etc?

If you love the outdoors, then you will find no shortage of things to do around here. There are a bunch of trails, hiking, etc. Skiing is a couple of hours away in N. Carolina. As for the social aspect of Harrogate, there isn't much...but that is not a bad thing. There are a few bars, one that serves more than just beer (it is a dry county...kinda) and one coffee shop about 4 miles away - it is a local place. There are no starbucks, panera breads, etc. unless you go to Knoxville. You can find everything you need in Knoxville, which is a little over an hour away. As for grocery stores, fast-food places, Wal-Mart, etc., you have to go to Middlesboro, KY, which is 5 minutes away. You can find everything you need for day-to-day living in Middlesboro. For me (and many other students), it is nice not having a lot of distractions around, so studying is better.

As for LaFollette, it is a super nice area. I don't mind the 30 minute drive b/c it is very relaxing and it is nice to take my mind off of school and veg out to the radio. But I hate putting 60 miles a day on my car. My wife and I chose LaFollette as a halfway point b/w school and knoxville, but since my wife is going to be able to work from home, we are moving closer to school. This way I am closer to DCOM and so is my wife, and then it is easier for her to be involved with the SAA (spouse and sig. other club) at school. But I would have no problem living in LaFollette if my wife worked in K-ville.

Are there any undergrad students going to visit DCOM on December 15th for the conference? What should i expect from it?

I interviewed on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 and have not heard anything yet. 🙁
Should I be worried? 😕

Everyone I met with was very nice so I really enjoyed my visit and really liked the school!!!!

Thanks

I think the only ones that have posted about hearing back up to this point are the ones that interviewed on the 9th.

The OMAC conferences (or essentially an open house) is where you can meet faculty members, learn about DCOM's cirriculum, and mingle with students. You can get a tour of the building too. I would recommend going if you can.

i'm interviewing on the 6th , anyone else interviewing at this date??

Awesome! I live two hours away so I can't wait for this. I just registered for it on their site and received an email saying come! haha. I'm only a freshmen in college, but I am hearing so much about DCOM and it is so close so i must check it out! Plus I'm sure it will look very nice if in four years i apply to it and they are like.. this kid visited here four years ago, his priorities were damn good haha!

Well, I got waitlisted.

Sorry to hear that. Keep your hopes up though. The waitlist isnt a horrible thing. The only problem is that they usually wait until next semester to start pulling people off.

Now that is dedication. Definetly go see some schools. Just make sure you get by Bio I this semester 😎

You can skii in LaFollette. Our town sees hundreds from Ohio every summer enjoying the beautiful Norris Lake

Ah Bio I. Such a hard class for me. Although I'm maintaining an A, it's a low A. I bumped my studying time up from 2 hours for all classes a night to 4-5 though so I think the A should rise to what I want.

Next wed I have to know the full process of cellular respiration, photosynthesis, the muscular system of the human/frog body, skeletal systems and digestion.

You guys probably are laughing at me saying, just wait till "Blank" class.

Everyone has been there, just keep up the hard work and know that it will be worth it. If you're already set on medical school this early you should go ahead and start looking into volunteering and shadowing opportunities...you can never start those too early 😉

Got my acceptance in the mail today. Is anyone else missing the Address Confirmation page?

Haha, I believe we were both talking about snow skiing. But yes, Norris lake is one of the best lakes around for water skiing/wakeboarding. I do both on Norris and the next lake down in the dam system, Melton Hill lake. Its a little closer to where I live now, but anyways, they are beautiful. I've been all over the country and the world, and there arent many places that make me feel the way this area of East TN does. Its just something about the people and the air I guess. For those of you interviewing here in the next few weeks, the leaves are changing right now down here too, and its breath taking.

I actually just got a volunteer job in the ER! haha

Does anyone know if today is the day the Admissions Committee meets to vote on the interviews from the 23rd, or is that next Thursday?

I am curious about that as well. I interviewed on 10/19. I think they mentioned meeting today, but I am not sure who is lumped into it. I think there are three days to be considered 10/16, 10/19, and 10/23.

Good Luck with whatever happens. I am biting the nails on one hand while I type this with the other. I am starting to think I want this too bad.:scared:

Froggie, don't you guys have tests this week? Good Luck and give 'em hell.👍

Ahh...I see. I was thinking that each group got a separate meeting for consideration...but it definitely makes much more sense for them to meet about a series of groups.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that they meet each Thursday about the past Friday and Tuesday interviews. I wont be in that group with you all because of my stupid LORs. Hopefully my last one will come in and I can be in next weeks group. I really havent heard anything that has been able to talk me out of liking DCOM so much yet. I'll most likely go there if I get in.

Did they tell you that all of your LORs had to be in before the committee would consider you? It seems weird that they offer interviews before everything else is completed (aren't the LORs where the interviewers get some of their information and questions?)

Okay... question. I'm from New York but have an interview down at DCOM in Nov (probably the 16th). I'm wondering what the best transportation from the Airport to the college is (~58 miles from Knoxville to Harrogate). I'm only 21 so I don't know if they'll let me rent one. So besides that I don't want to drive down. Is there any other possible transportation?

Thanks!

You're right. I interviewed on 10/19 and Mr. Carney said the committee was meeting on the 25th. If I don't hear anything by the 31st, I will get a little scared.

The only way I know of getting down here from Knoxville is driving. I guess you could take a cab, but I wouldn't recommend it. There are places that will rent to people under 25, I think enterprise is one of them. Make sure you call and ask beforehand. The drive from Knoxville isn't bad, it is really a pretty drive.

The drive is great. There are 2 directions you can take, and I would recommend going through LaFollette, especially if you're not used to extremely winding country roads (which is what you would get on Maynardville hwy and is the default route given by google maps). You get a beautiful drive, and you get to see a good location to live halfway between Knoxville and Harrogate. Here is a link to the directions that take you through LaFollette:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=...3.7837&sspn=1.40533,2.900391&ie=UTF8&z=9&om=1

Also, I spoke with some of the other interviewees Tuesday. Many of them were under 25 and they rented a car in Knoxville. I think they had to pay a small "under 25" fee, but they didn't act like it was a big deal. One rented from Budget and one rented from Enterprise.

Trust me, you don't want to miss out on the drive. It's very relaxing and is just what you need to get you prepared for the interview.

Froggiepremed, MJB, Nascardoc et al. Being the inaugaral class at DCOM, what traditions do you guys plan on starting? I saw on the UNECOM thread that they hold a post gross toast to be celebrated after finishing up anatomy. It is kinda cool you guys have an opportunity to start some traditions that may be observed for generations. 👍

Yeah, I second that question. The DO that I am shadowing went to UNECOM. He said that after anatomy they had a huge bonfire where they burned all of their lab clothing. He said it was a big deal to all the students and they had a great time. (Is that what you're talking about mark?)

Yeah, I thought it odd too, but I wasnt gonna complain! Both Paul and my interviewers let me know that as soon as my LORs were in I could go in front of the adcom, but I had to be complete first. So I'm hoping that it gets there before next Thursday so I dont have to wait yet another week....

On a side note, I really enjoyed the time up there, but I want to come back and hang around maybe get a tour on a day without us little premed interviewees running around in our black suits everywhere. Can I schedule a tour or something like that? I dont know when I would be able to make the pizza night because of class and work, but I just want to get a better feel for the school/area. Any advice on some things to check out while I'm up there?

The students could probably give much better advice, but you should definitely check out the Pinnacle. It's on top of one of the mountains and you can look out and see the point where TN, VA, and KY all meet. The view is awesome!

I'm going to try to go to the OMAC conference. I believe my wife will be out of school by then, so I'd like to bring her up and show her around. I think the next one is December 15.

Well, I didnt think that they would, but the adcom looked over my application apparently because I had an email from Paul this morning saying they need my LORs before they can make a final decision. Thats a good thing though, they didnt just come out and say, "try again next year, thanks though!" I know just about everyone gets to the waitlist if they dont get in, so I guess thats where I am for now... Wishing everyone else some luck!

I saw a special a while ago where medical students (I forgot what school) had a bonfrie after they passed their boards where they burned all their practice exams and scrubs. I would be really interested in hearing what you guys have planned as long as it's not "let give the second DCOM class hell." 😱 Keep us posted as us incoming students will carry on with the traditions next year.

So I guess the ADCOMs did meet yesterday and make their selections? Sounds like you've got a really good shot then, they must like you enough thus far to want to hold out until your LOR comes in, plus, you're from Knoxville...so that will help you a lot.

Good luck man. I hope we're both representing TTU come next year.

😉

I'll answer the best I can. Anyone else please chime in.

As far as the cadavers, I think we are having a special ceremony, but I dont know how big it will be. I will try to find out.

As far as other fun events, the SGA and SOMA are putting on events. We are having a winter formal, details will be released later. I hold a position with SOMA, and I know we have a lot of things in the works to be put on as far as annual fun things. We want to have a mixer at the start of the year, olympic games, and I have a special event I am trying to plan - I will hold that idea a secret until I know I can pull it off 😉

Of course, suggestions are welcome too 👍

Oh man, has anyone heard anything yet from last week's interview groups. This is a similar to how I felt waiting for my MCAT scores to be posted.

What date did you interview? The only people that I have seen post acceptances or waitlists interviewed on the 9th or the 12th.

the 19th. I agree, no one seems to have heard anything, but for some reason I thought they said they were going to call today. Looks like not, so I won't freak out.

I think they said Tuesday.. I think. (I interviewed the 19th as well)

The group that interviewed the week before us got calls monday. I guess it will be either monday or tuesday for us. If it is good news. I am really nervous about it all too. It is going to be an interesting day for me Monday. I don't know if I can sit through class all day, wondering if I got a call.

I'm not sure of the turn-around time for reviews. I interviewed on the 9th and didn't find out until I got a phone call on the 22nd. (Not quite a week) I wouldn't worry so much. My call came from an "unknown caller" and I stepped out of class to answer it just in case it was Dr. Stowers and it was. If you aren't accepted you more than likely will be waitlisted unless you just blew it in the interview and either way those letters will be in the mail the same day as the acceptances.

I'm sure you did fine MM. Just relax. 🙂

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I have been a wreck this past week. The funny thing is I am usually a calm individual about things. I learned alot about myself throughout this whole circus that is med school admissions.

Not real sure on any "traditions" that are being started, but I'm sure we can come up with some. We seem to be a pretty creative and cohesive group.

As far as reviewing your app without LOR's, I went through the same thing. I know it's frustrating, but just get it there as soon as possible.

For a first timer, I too would recommend taking the LaFollette route rather than going through Maynardville, but if you have time on the way back, and it's in the daylight, I would highly recommend coming back to Knoxville on 25 and 33. The drive is absolutely BEAUTIFUL and is often very relaxing for me. I see wildlife every single morning, and watching the sun come up over the hills and as you go through the valleys cannot be beat.

As far as a more private tour, I'm not sure how to work that out. You might just call the admissions staff. I'd be happy to do it. OMAC might be your best bet, however.

Enjoyed spending time with today's folks that interviewed...time to get back to studying. Please don't hesitate to ask questions.

Do you guys think it is too late to apply to LMU?
